Do I need to run a malware scan after removing uTorrent?

I know this is a dumb question, but I don't know of any malware scan sites for Mac that I trust. I'm using Mavericks and my OS is up-to-date. Do I need to run a malware scan after uninstalling uTorrent? If so, where would I get one I can trust?
Here is my scenario - On a recommendation (which I no longer trust) I installed uTorrent, as I wanted to download a file that was only available in torrent form. (This file is a legally available file, so I would not be violating copyright.)
What made me worry was the when I downloaded uTorrent, it installed without asking me to enter my admin password. This raised a red flag for me. So I immediately uninstalled uTorrent, by moving the Application to trash.
So, now that I have it uninstalled, is there a danger it may have left unwanted files on my Mac?
I don't see any evidence of unwanted files. Just wondering. Am I worrying for nothing?

There aren't any. It is not possible to scan one's computer from a web-site, they are all scams. All or most of the Windows sites are, as well.

Many applications can be installed without the need for an admin password since they don't need to install files in any common or system locations. As long as everything goes into the Applications folder and your user folder, you should never need admin permissions.
uTorrent itself is a perfectly legit application that can be used for illegal activities, like all BitTorrent apps. I'm sure it comes with an Apple developer ID signature and under normal circumstances should not be able to harm your OS X or it's applications. But to some extent it depends on where you obtained the app itself. Any app you obtain from AppStore, a legit developer site or MacUpdate should be just fine. If you got it from C|Net's download.com or Softonic then it may have come with an installer that will also install annoying adware. It would have notified you that it was being installed (and again, no admin password is required), but a large majority of users never read those dialogs and blindly click through them to get their app installed and in use as soon as possible. If you think the latter is a possibility, then the Adware Removal Guide that Carolyn tipped you to has a Adware Removal Tool that should make quick work of anything like that.

I need to run a clean scan report on my os x mac purchased in 2006.
Can anyone help me identify a software that will do this?
    Thanks Madhumann

    clean scan report
What do you mean by this?  What results are you looking for?  List some of the results you would see in the report.
Are you saying you want to check the hd for problems?
    Verify a disk
As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.
I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Start up disk utility.  On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.
    Click on your startup disk.
Click on the First Aid  Tab.
    Click on verify.
Hopefully your disk will verify.  If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

  • Do I need to run anti-viral program after trying to open a spam attachment?

I was tricked by a spam email and clicked on a link, which did not open.  I've been advised to delete the email (done), change my password (done), and run anti-viral program (not done, and never have).  What, if anything, should I do?

You don't need to run antivirus software after that. Just be more careful in the future.

  • I was told I needed to run a virus scan before being allowed to reinstate my facebook account. What is the best way for me to download a free, but 100% safe virus scan for my iMac?

Is there a virus scan download from Apple.com that I should use to clear my iMac before I download the latest update to Mevericks and get a clear slate to reactivate my facebook account? Thank you.

You may have been the victim of a potential scam or responded to a pop-up trying to sell anti-virus software.
How on earth would Facebook know you have a virus - not least because there are no viruses that can affect OS X.
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful: The User Tip seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • Need to run "udevadm trigger" again after startx

I rearranged some keyboard modifiers according to instructions found here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … etkeycodes
Everything works except that when I start X11 (with startx), then I have to run "udevadm trigger" again to get the new modifiers working. This is the case for both my laptop and USB keyboards.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Neha.
Thanks for quik turn around. But I need this z program to run after all changes are done in XK02 because I need to use the changed vendor data in the BDC program. This is the exit which triggers before save, so I couldn't get the changed vendor data from database table to use in z program (BDC).
    Hope I am clear.

  • Do you always need to run enable-cstopology/bootstrapper after update?

If I look at the instructions for the January updates:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2809243/
I can see that it says you have to run "Install-csdatabase". But as far as I can see you dont need to that because the database are already at the correct level.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/dodeitte/archive/2013/07/02/how-to-verify-if-lync-server-2013-database-updates-completed-successfully.aspx
My question is if the last part about mobility and running bootstrapper is also redundant since I already have mobility enabled?
I guess the information is there since it is a cumulativeupdate so if you have not installed any of the previous updates you have to run both the database update and enable the mobility service?

At the beginning of the KB article it does say which steps have to be run depending on the current version of Lync Server.
"To install updates for a Lync Server 2013 installation that has the July 2013 cumulative update (5.0.8308.420) or a later update installed,
you must perform the following step 1.
To install updates for a Lync Server 2013 installation that has the February 2013 cumulative updates (5.0.8308.291) installed, you must perform
the following steps 1 and 2.
To install updates for Lync Server 2013 RTM (5.0.8308.0) you must perform the following steps 1-5."
    Step 1: Install CU
Step 2: Back end database updates
    Step 3: CMS database update
    Step 4: Enable Mobility service
    Step 5: Enable UCWA

  • Fan's running full power contantly after removal HD

    Hey,
I brought my brand new intel imac 20 inch to apple because it wouldn't start up anymore after installing XP.
Apple removed and manually reinstalled Leopard and XP. Since then when I start it up the fans are instantly running full power all the time.
I triend to rebooth with shift and R+P but nothing chances. In istats the cpu is on 1 or 2 % and still one fan ( the cpu fan ) is making lots of RPM.
I ran the hardware test and it showed:
    4sns/1/40000000: TLOP-130.000
Is it possible that something has damaged after the HD removal?

Anything's possible if they opened the case to replace the HD -- the tech
might have damaged, dislocated, or disconnected a temperature sensor.
OTOH, "manually reinstalled Leopard and XP" wouldn't normally require
anyone to open the case. Are you sure they replaced the hard drive?

  • I opened an email that may have contained a virus, do i need to run a scan?

how do you run a virus scan using OSx mavericks?

You do not need to run any virus scan. Some of these anti-virus scan software can create problems.
Install all System, Applications and Security updates released by Apple.
Install software direct from Application manufacturers or App store, not from third party suppliers

How do I run a security scan on my macbook pro?

If you have only Mac OSX running  you don't need to run any security scan.
If any major security risk exists Apple offers Security Updates.
Just don't  install any applications not needed,
If you run Windows that is a different story.

  • I opened the attachment on a malicious email in error on my IPad and have been informed by the genuine company that it will download malware software. Is this possible on my IPad or is there a way of running a security scan to see if it has been infected?

I received an email that I now know to be malicious and inadvertently opened up the attachment on my IPad that I've been informed will download malware or a virus. Can my IPad be infected this way or does anyone know if there is a way of running a security scan to check if there is a problem? I do have the most up to date IOS software installed.

There is no anti-malware for iOS, at least none that actually does anything useful. The odds of getting any malware infection via an email attachment on an iOS device is quite low - practically non-existent. Unless you are seeing any issues, there isn't much to do, other than deleting the email and being more cautious in the future.

  • How Do I Run a Virus Scan?  Attempting to Resolve Gmail Access Issue.

Hello. I'm not technically savey and am in need to assistance in resolving an issue. I suddenly am no longer able to access my GMail account. The system will not accept long-used password. I'm working back through GMail assistance forum and was told "to run a virus scan on the computer," i.e., "scan your machine for viruses and malware. Get rid of any programs found during the scan." The message refers me to a Google Pack, which comes with free anti-virus software. When I check the website I don't see anything that looks like it is appropriate for running a virus scan on the computer.
How do I "run a virus scan"? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hello Kappy, Thank you for your response. I reviewed a portion of the "Missing Manual" by David Pogue and figured out how to go into utilities and repair permissions. The following are the responses I got when I ran "repair permissions":

So what do I do with this information? I'm not sure what it means and how it impacts the computer. However, after I ran this, I was able to complete the goggle form for a new password (my computer no longer recognized my years-old password) and obtain a new one and then access my email account again. (I opened a bogus email yesterday that I have since learned contained a virus so I am assuming this may have caused my angst.) So I'm now back to my gmail account but not sure how the above information related to the "repairs permission" should be addressed if at all.
Thank you again for your assistance. I am truly not computer savey and what is intuitive for some folks just goes over my head so I truly appreciate your help.

Depending on the specific features that you think you need in a Virtual Machine, you should research the paid "Parallels" and "VMWare Fusion", and the free yet very capable "VirtualBox".  I personally use VirtualBox because it does NOT include all of the Mac-to-VM interactivity features that the others do.  For performance and security reasons, I specifically do not want my VM to be able to interact with my Mac OS host in any way other than copy and paste.
On your Windows VM, if you are running windows 8.1, and are not logged in as an administrator as your primary account, then the built in Windows Defender is a perfectly suitable for anti-malware protection.  If you are running Windows 7 (or 8.1) and want additional protection I would recommend "BitDefender Free" as it has great protection yet has a very light-weight performance hit.
