Do I need to uninstall programs with a Mac? and more questions.

Aloha all,
I am about 3 days old with my new Macbook. I love it and am almost completely sold to Macs forever. This thing is wonderful.
However, I still dont know all the answers yet and need some help.
I tried to download the Microsoft video player to view a vid online. It never installed properly for some reason, and I just want to know if it even is still on my HD. Do I have to uninstall things like you do on Windows? Where do I go and how do I do this?
Also, I downloaded the newest version of itunes today, yet in my applications folder there is still one itunes icon and a white HD looking icon that says itune 6.0.5. Is that normal?
Hope that made sense.
Thanks for you help in advance.

You might want to use Flip4Mac instead.
If you are downloading Windows Media Player you will also need to download Stuffit Expander as Microsoft have used Stuffit to compress the installation file and Tiger now no longer comes with Stuffit.
Once you have expanded the .sit file you can then run the Windows Media Player installer.
VLC which is a universal binary
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html
Flip4Mac allows you to play Windows Media files through Quicktime, however it is not a universal binary so
a) you have to run the installer app through Rosetta to install Flip4Mac
b) Quicktime also has to run through Rosetta to play Windows Media files with Flip4Mac
c) Safari (and other browsers) need to run through Rosetta to play embedded Windows Media files on webpages
and I just want to know if it even is
still on my HD.
Probably.
Do I have to uninstall things like

Depends on the application.
Some have uninstallers (similar to Windows).
Others can be simply dragged to the trash.

Yes. That is a mounted disk image. You can safely drag it to the trash.
Hope that made sense.

  • Display issue with old TV and more questions

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect my 24" iMac to an older model TV with RCA and S-Video input. I haven't attempted to connect using S Video but i do have the adaptor for the iMac to use the Yellow RCA cable. I understand that it automatically changes the resoltion to adapt to the TV resolution but my question is this.
Does S-Video result in a clearer picture with the TV? Because right now it is virtually unusable because of the picture quality. I have tried to reduce the resolution from the iMac with no prevail. Should i pick up an S-Video cable today?
#2 - Can i turn off the monitor from the iMac without it touching the TV display?
#3 - I only have two sets of inputs on the back of this TV one for the Tivo and one for the Xbox 360. What would i need to add this additional input and change it remotely?
Any help with these is greatly appreciated!

    Hi D to the M
You will do better turning Mirroring Off and select the proper resolution for each, when your running that setup in Mirror mode the resolutions are not matched and it goofs up the iMacs resolution. This will also be true using an S-Video cable, but the overall picture quality should be slightly better. Note that the TV will probably not make a good display for working windows, but will be decent for watching movies, video clips, viewing slideshows and photos.
My same TV setup has been connected up for over 2 years, and I just switch the TV off or select another input source.

  • I have to run Windows for work, which is best Parallels, Fusion, or Boot Camp? I won't need to share anything with the Mac Side.

I have to run Windows for work, yuk! Which is best Parallels, Fusion, or Boot Camp? I will not need to share anything with my Mac side as I will just be running one program to chat on the web and send Emails.

Parallels, Fusion and VirtualBox are all virtualization applications, they 'virtualize' (create) a Windows environment on your Macs OSX operating system.
Boot Camp makes a compatible partition on your hard drive so you may install windows on it directly.

You should not need to have special IP address configurations to manage your devices and software. You can do this in the private network offered by any router, provided all devices being managed are behind that router. If for some reason you need a static IP on the network (such as for the server itself), then you can delegate one to the server in your router, but you dont need a special public IP address configuration from your ISP to set this up and make use of it.

  • How can I exchange my pc created documents on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint with my mac and my Pages, Numbers and Keynote created content with my pc?  I need to create and edit between both.

How can I exchange my pc created documents on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint with my mac and my Pages, Numbers and Keynote created content with my pc?  I need to create and edit and exchange between both types of operating systems.

Your Windows system will not open any Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents. No applications exist for Windows that can open those formats. You will need to export your documents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats, respectively, before you'll be able to view and edit the documents on your Windows system. The iWork documents can natively open Word, Excel and PP documents, though there are limitations on what can be imported (for instance, Numbers does not support all possible Excel functions). Consult the documentation for the relevant iWork application for details on importing and exporting.
If you are asking how to get the documents from one system to the other, then there are several ways to do that, including file sharing, using an external drive (hard drive, USB flash drive), or emailing the documents to yourself. Which would be best for your situation I can't say without more details about your usage.

Just download, install, and activate using your serial number.  You are allowed to have the software installed and activated on two machines.  If you do not wish to retain the original installation as a backup you can deactivate it by opening one of the programs and choosing Help -> Deactivate.
Here is a general link for where you can find download links...
    Download and Installation Help -
    https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install.html
If you would like a more direct link you will need to name the software and the version.
If you need your serial number you should be able to find it in your Adobe account online if you registered the software when you first installed it.

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. • White screen with a folder and a question mark in the Folder

    Hi,
My daughter's Desktop Mac Pro won't reboot. On reboot, it shows a white screen with a folder and a question mark within, It just stays there and nothing happens. Is this a problem with a dead hard drive, dead processor, faulty USB connection, problem with airport.? We need advise and help, please!

    Hi, Anonymoustache, thanks for responding.
Yes, I think it is "a flashing question mark". If it is flashing, you think it is a hardware problem like a dead hard drive? I had a flashing question mark with my Power book G4 and Apple replaced a dead hard drive.
Thanks Hatter, I will convey your response to my daughter and see if it will help.

There really isn't any workaround to the cost. You can't get the parts needed to fix it yourself. Only Apple has those parts and they do not sell them to end users.
Sure you could take it apart and clean everything and the screen might start working again but then it might not. Depending on what cause it to stop working in the first place. Like something got shorted out.

    Hey there rmflint,
It sounds like you are wanting to update the Apps that were synced over from your computer to your new iPhone 5s. If you are clicking Updates in the App Store in the bottom right corner, would you mind clarifying what happens when you are trying to update them?

  • External hard drive use with both Mac and Windows

I know that you can't use an iPod (through iTunes) with both Mac and Windows, but can you still use it as an external hard drive with both operating systems?

Yes, if the iPod is in Windows format. Mac OS X can read and write Windows formatted iPods, but Windows can't access Mac formatted disks unless special software is installed.
