Do I need to update my 3gs to ios 5 in preparation to transfer everything to my 4s?

Do I need to update my 3gs to ios 5 to make a smooth transition to my 4s arriving Friday or can I transfer everything over (restore from backup) from mismatched operating systems?

I want to make sure I'm doing it in a way that will keep important things like my text history intact on the new phone.
Since that's not something that is "synced" but I believe is rather kept in the backup, does that mean I have to "restore" the new phone from a backup of the old phone? And if so, does the ios have to match on the backup?

I tried restarting the phone several times, removing the SIM card several times, but it did not change anything, the SIM is still not detected.

You do not need to keep posting the same thing over and over again.

Sounds like you actually have a 1st generation as those cannot update beyond iOS 3.1.3.

That suggests you have an iPhone 3G, not a 3GS, which can't run an iOS version newer than 4.2.1. If you're sure you're using an iPhone 3GS, ensure that iTunes is up to date.

I think there's some remmants left over from when Apple transferred stuff over. We can try a quick fix, but if that doesn't work, I think the only option is to clean install OSX and then install Windows.
open disk utility, confirm that you only have 1 partition (mac journaled)
restart and PRAM reset
open disk utility and repair permissions twice
restart boot camp assistant
Does it work?
If not, I would boot holding command+R, choose disk utility from the menu and completely erase your HD (formatting it as mac journaled again). Then, install OSX on this HD. Once OSX is installed, don't copy your files over from the backup yet. Instead, start boot camp assistant and see if you can get Windows installed. You can copy back your other files after we get Windows installed.

I updated my software for my iPhone 3GS to ios 6 and didn't have it plugged in, as I never had to before. My battery was at 100% when it started and the update drained my battery. Now my iphone is in limbo, it tells me that my software is updated, but I need a few more steps, when I connect to itunes, it connects and disconnects itself and itunes can't read my iphone and wants me to restore it. I work for an Enterprise with around 30 devices so far, 5 of them have been upgraded to iOS 5.01 and we are having this issue, the steps below are appearing, these are both on iphone and ipad 2's with exchange 2003:-
- Exchange Calendars not sync'ing, but Yahoo account working fine.
- Create an appointment on the ipad / iphone and this sync's with Exchange.
- Close the Calendar and re-open the appointment disappears, but stay's within Exchange.
- Meetings created within the Exchange Calendar do not synch with the iphone / ipad.
This is starting to cause a lot of issues.

I've been weary about updating my iphone 3gs from ios 4 (4.3.5 to be exact) to the new ios 5. I didn't have a problem sitting on an older update untill my phone started acting up and the only thing to do to fix it is to do a restore. itunes is forcing me to update in order to restore (didn't used to do that untill the new itunes update came out a while back...makes me angry) therefore causing a bit of concern with me. I do recall how the 3G acted when the ios 4 came out, and my worry is will the iphone 3Gs do something simmilar or worse. What are the experiances you guys have had with it, both good and bad, I'm curious. Also is it a good idea to update the 3gs to the ios 5 or not.

Today I updated my stock iphone 3gs to IOS 5.01 from 4.3.5. All went well until I noticed that my apps had not be restored. I attempted to restore my phone in iTunes but now all I get is "There is a problem with your iphone" message appear in iTunes and on my device.
What can I do to restore the phone to working condition? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Better yet, just got off hold with Apple Tier 2 Tech - their Verification Server is down. Give it time for a fix.
