If your iMac has a PowerPC processor, you can upgrade to OS 10.5 Leopard, which is the max OS.
If your iMac has an Intel processor, you can upgrade to OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, and possibly OS 10.7 Lion.
You have to buy OS upgrades. Updates to later versions are free from Apple's site.

That's probably not a good idea to try to share apps since you will have to switch ID's each time you update apps and sync apps from iTunes.
And technically - according to Apple's terms - you cannot share apps using different ID's. You can actually lock yourself out of an ID for 90 days if you switch ID's and if you associate the iPad with another ID.

I found a way to get to my data. So do not need remedy at this time.
fwiw, I changed my ios7.04 setup answer of restore from itunes to new iphone. Eventually that allowed me to set up icloud, then turn off find iphone, restore. Very strange ios update.

Shouldn't take more than a few seconds to a minute. If it's stuck, you might want to give Apple support a call to see if they are experiencing unreported server issues. You will need your serial number, which is on the box and (I believe) the back of your iPad.
