Do I need to upgrade to snow leopard if my current version is 10.6.8 to go to Lion?

I'm currently on OS 10.6.8 on my mac book pro.  What do I need to do get Lion to install?

Buy it thru the Mac App Store. It will download and install itself.
Be aware that PowerPC apps will not work anymore.
Minimum requirementss or Lion:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
7 GB of available disk space
2 GB of RAM
If your Mac does not meet these requirements, you will need to upgrade your Mac before installing Lion.

Ah yes.  South Africa.   I checked the international listings for you but there seems to be no direct Apple support in South Africa.   I cannot imagine why since the political restraints for countries like Iran are not those of South Africa.
I understand that Apple United States do not ship orders outside of the USA.
You may have to contact Apple Head Office.

  • I have OS X 10.5.8, should I upgrade to Snow Leopard, or a later version?

I have  OS X 10.5.8 on a 2008 Macbook Pro. Should I upgrade to Snow Leopard, or a later version?

Depends. If you use and need PPC apps, then SL. If you don't use any of those, then go to whatever the machine supports. Details at Lion specs and MLion specs.

  • How do i upgrade my snow leopard to the latest version

how do I upgrade my snow leopard to the latest version free of charge
    thank  you

10.6.8 update is the latest version of Snow Leopard. To check if you are running that, go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac and it should tell you.
If you want to upgrade to the latest version of OS X (Mavericks, 10.9.1 - free) you can select the App Store from the Apple menu and download it.
However, ensure your Mac meets the tech specs: https://www.apple.com/osx/specs/ and be aware that although the specs say 2gb or RAM is required, real-world use seems to indicate that 4gb is a realistic minimum.
Also many older apps will not longer work in Mavericks and PowerPC apps will not run because Rosetta, which enabled the ability, is no longer supported/available.
Check out this compatibility list to prepare your self for possibly having to upgrade or replace apps that you may a rely on in your work flow.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps
The Mavericks installer is a 5.3gb download - you may want to make a copy of it before running it - could save another large download in the future if you ever needed to re-install.
Ensure you have reliable backup you can restore from before embarking on the upgrade.

  • How do i install Facetime on Mac, do i need to upgrade to Snow leopard?

    Hey all
my boy's got an itouch with FaceTime on it so i want to connect my Mac Mini to it. I cannot get facetime without owning the AppStore application. I cannot install the AppStore App on the mac Mini unless i install Snow Leopard is this right?
currently i am on Mac OS X ver 10.5.8.
processor 1.83 GHZ intel core 2duo
    memory 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
my question is that do i have to pay £26 for the upgrade in order to get the App Store application?
    cheers

That is correct; FaceTime for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.6.6. So you will need to purchase the Snow Leopard upgrade if you want FaceTime.
    Regards.

  • Need help upgrading to Snow Leopard

OK...I'm finally ready to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
I am currently runninag a 2.4 ghz Intell iMac (late 2007), 4 gig ram runing OS 10.4.11.
I have purchased an external harddrive, and created a bootable clone of my existing 10.4.11 OS.
I also purchased a full Snow Leoperd box set...complete with iLife.
Now...my understanding is that there no longer is an "easy" option to erase-and-install, or archive-and-install, as the installation now does the installation automatically.  (I understad that there is a manual wayto erase-and-install).  From what I read, the installation will upgrade my OS, leaving any comaptable sprograms in tack, and moving incompatable programs to a non-active folder.
I currently have several programs that I know are not compatable with 10.6, specifially iLife 8, Quark 7, and Adobe CS3.  I will installing the most current version of these programs once the OS has been updated.
I guess my question is...am I safe to just let the installer do the upgrade...keeping my existing software as it is...then try and install the newer versions of my software?
For example...iLife 8 will not work with 10.6.  So...once I upgrade to 10.6 what will happen to iLife 8?  Can I just install iLife 11 right overtop of iLife 8?
I guess...in the end...if something goes wrong I can always boot-up off of the 10.6 install disc and erase my HD and start from scratch...right?
    Thanks for any help.

It looks like you're all set up, so go for it. The upgrade should work fine, and should manage your incompatible applications accordingly. There is no way to predict if a problem will arise, but you've got your bases covered if it does. If something goes awry then you have the clone that you can use to either restore your current installation, or use as a migration source after formatting and installing a fresh copy of Snow Leopard.

  • I have a very old mac and need to upgrade to snow leopard to update my itunes, my disc drive is not working can i download snow leopard without a disc?

I have an old mac version 10.5.8  I need to update to snow leopard and my disc drive isn't working... Can I download snow leopard without a disc?

Snow Leopard is only available on disk. Furthermore, even if you had a working disk drive, you may not be able to install Snow Leopard anyway, depending on just how "old" your Mac is. It must have an Intel processor to run Snow Leopard (Macs with Intel processors were first made in 2006), among other requirements.

i currently have a 2207 iMac and I'm running tiger. I had an iPod classic which synced up beautifully but it has just died. iPod touch's are the only things that are on the market now as classic are no more. I've been told that an iPod touch won't qork on tiger operating system and I need to get snow lWoodard. Can I upgrade straight to snow leopard or do I need to get leopard first? Also will the new iPod touches work with snow leopard? Many thanks, please help me as I keep getting different answers. Ben

And the only way to figure that out would be verifying my disk using the Disk Utility?
Thank you for that. If I am not missing out on anything by skipping Lion then that will be my option. A few extra dollars in my pocket is always a good thing.

  • Need to upgrade from snow leopard to lion

    Hello,
I am running up-to-date 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on mid-2009 iMac 2.66 ghz Intel dual core
I need to upgrade to Lion. I don't want to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Pointers?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you want to upgrade to OS X Lion, you must know that Apple doesn't sell it anymore in the App Store, so you have to call Apple > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 They will give you a code that you have to insert in the App Store, so OS X Lion will start being downloaded.
While OS X is downloading, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and/or Carbon Copy Cloner, and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com. When its download finishes, just follow the steps of the OS X Lion installer

  • I have upgraded to snow leopard 10.6.3 version and it will not open mail it says i cant use this version of mail 3.6

I have upgraded to mac os x snow leopard but it doesent let me open mail it says i have mail 3.6 so i tried to download a larer version of mail and i havent got space.

While the minimum free space some quote of 4GB or 10% in actual practice you want more like 10-15GB minimum and that doesn't mean it will perform as it should, only that it may be able to function at all. 20% free space, but none of that means that your free space is large enough, or that the pieces of free space may be so small as to still not allow writes.
The worst is when it is no longer possible to update the index to the drive directory of where files and fragments are located.
Last, good idea when moving to a new OS, to backup/clone your drive, erase and install, then use Setup Assistant, as in going from 10.5 to 10.6. It may seem like you or others can "get away" with avoiding formatting a drive. In practice, you want to be safe rather than sorry. And the only time to insure the partitions are aligned and healthy and no bad sectors, especially those contained by the OS that are hidden.
Swapping out hard drive, moving your drive to an external case kit can be found here:

  • I want to upgrade from Tiger 10.5 to Lion. I need to install the snow leopard first but they stoped shipping it to Greece. How do I get it? Please help.

    Hello guys!
I am facing a big problem.  I need to upgrade from OS X 10.5 to Lion BUT I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard first. They have stoped shipping to Greece and I am not able to find it anywhere (even Amazon does not ship this product here!!!) What I am supposed to do? Please help me.

Clone backup your hard drive at least twice*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Erase and install Lion from the USB Flash Drive version that's available on the online store.
Use the Migration Assistant to import the data, if you are certain everything is compatible with Lion.  Read this user tip to determine if it might be incompatible:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465
If you have any PowerPC (Rosetta) Applications, you may have to manually import the data from the backup:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
And then find the applications that are equivalent to them that are Lion compatible.

  • HT6114 Is there a way to get a free OS upgrade to snow leopard?

I am currently running OS 10.5.8 and I desparately need to upgrade to snow leopard so I can ultimately upgrade to mavericks. I am a student at Salisbury University and my wife is a student at the University of Maryland, we both have iphone 5's and I also have an ipad 2. So in order to have our desktop communicate with our other devices we need to update the OS. With both of us being in school $$ is not in tremendous supply, I know apple offered a free download for snow leopard around 2012. It would be great if there is any way we can get the SL upgrade for free.

Firstly it may pay to see if your Mac meets the requirements for Mavericks. Is your Macbook the Aluminium model? Check here
    http://www.apple.com/au/osx/specs/
Also a lot of your old Appications may not work under avericks. Check here for compatability.
