Do I need to upgrade to USB 2.0?

I bought my daughter an iPod Nano 4 GB and dock for Christmas. She has a Dell PC with Windows XP, and USB 1.1 and Firewire ports. (My son uses the Firewire port for his older iPod 15GB.) The iPod Nano came with a USB 2.0 connector. When we tried connecting the iPod to the USB 1.1 port it failed because the connection was too slow. Do I need to upgrade to USB 2.0 or are there other options for connecting the iPod Nano to her PC?

There are several things that can slow down a deployment.
1. If you use "cheap" USB 2.0 drives, you will get slow behavior.
2. If you have a slow network (Fast Ethernet), you will get slowness.
Note that there *are* some technical problems with USB 3.0, since some USB 3.0 host controllers don't have built-in WinPE Driver support, so I typically try to avoid USB 3.0 (yes really), instead I find "fast" 8GB USB 2.0 drives to do the heavy lifting.
If you don't have access do fast USB 2.0 drives, but do have Gigabit Ethernet, I would just put the boot media (extract the contents of the
\\server\deploymentshare$\boot\LitetouchPE_x64.iso to your boot media rather than creating offline media). This method also has the advantage of working with new uEFI machines. :)

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.

    Return it.
The requirements are on the box and on the website:
    Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later

  • Do I need to upgrade to snow leopard if my current version is 10.6.8 to go to Lion?

I'm currently on OS 10.6.8 on my mac book pro.  What do I need to do get Lion to install?

Buy it thru the Mac App Store. It will download and install itself.
Be aware that PowerPC apps will not work anymore.
    Minimum requirementss or Lion:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
7 GB of available disk space
    2 GB of RAM
If your Mac does not meet these requirements, you will need to upgrade your Mac before installing Lion.

  • Need to upgrade my MacBook from Snow Leopard.  Should I go straight to Yosemite?

I am a nervous person. The idea of upgrading always fills me with dread. I have way too much to do, to have computer problems. Yet my MacBook is getting sluggish (I can type faster than the words show up, now). It's probably because I still run 10.6.8 - I know I need to upgrade but I have two questions:
    1) Should I go straight to Yosemite, bypassing the others inbetween? (vs. going one upgrade at a time)
    2) What will happen if it gets halfway through the upgrade and I don't have enough space or memory? Does it just stop and cancel the upgrade? Or will things get messed up.
    Thanks!

Pfffft....I'll just copy and paste the report....

  • I need to upgrade to iOSX 10.6 Snow Leopard but have a nonfunctional disc drive. Can I download the software or get it on my computer any other way?

I gave my 2010 iMac to my father but it has a nonfunctioning disc drive (cannot read any type of disc). It's operating on OS X 10.5 Leopard. We need to upgrade him to at least OS X 10.7 Lion, but judging by what I've read so far, we cannot do that without first installing OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. I cannot find a way to download OS X 10.6, and having the disc shipped is not an ideal option. Does anyone know of a way I can download a legit copy? Another option — though I'm not sure it'll work — is to order the OS X 10.6 disc, transfer the files from the disc to a USB key on my newer Macbook Pro, then bring it over to my dad and install it on his iMac from the USB key. Does anyone have experience with this who knows if it will work or not? Thank you!

    1. No.

  • Upgrade to USB 2.0 possible?

I've got an MBP 15" with two USB 1.1 ports. Is there any way to upgrade to USB 2.0?
    Thanks.

Hi Stedman and Niel and thank you both for your responses.
Maybe what is confusing me is the ports themselves. The USB ports on my MBP both are USB Type A connectors. I have two external drives that I connect using Firewire but both of which have ports labeled USB 2.0, both using USB Type B connectors. I assumed that USB 2.0 required Type B connectors. Is that wrong? Are there USB cables that have Type A and Type B on opposite ends?
This is all prompted by the USB 2.0 requirement stated for the iPhone. I'd like to get the 3G iPhone but need to be sure that my MBP will meet the phone's hardware requirements.
    Cheers,
    Michael

There is no 10.7 DVD You're getting 10.7 only via App Store or USB Stick, where did you get that DVD?
    The easiest way:
Open the App Store on 10.6.8 > Search for Lion > Purchase and the rest will be done automatically

  • I Can't access the homepage of MSN. I receive a message telling that I need to upgrade my browser. I am using Safari. My operating system is OS X 10.6.8.

I Can't access the homepage of MSN form Safari. I receive a message telling that I need to upgrade my browser. My operating system is OS X 10.6.8. I checked for upgrades and the system is up to date.

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.

No. You can update directly to Snow Leopard.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. Download and install update(s) if updating:
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).
    E. To upgrade from an earlier major version:
Purchase the requisite installer package (Snow Leopard for example.)
    Boot from the installer DVD.
    Choose the install option:
    None required for Snow Leopard.
Archive and Install for versions prior to Snow Leopard.

  • Upgrading my USB port

    Hello,
My PowerPC G4 has 1.0 USB card. I need to upgrade to 2.0. Can I simply purchase a USB 2.0 PCI card and replace the old one? I want to make sure that a 2.0 USB card is compatable with the G4 before I purchase it.
I purchased a DVD burner that HAS to be connected directly to the computer...so daisy chaining is not an option.
    Thanks,
    Roland

A USB 2.0 PCI card is what you need. Best bet is any card with a NEC PD72101 chipset (xlr8yourmac results recommend the same). Read this for more feedback:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fwusb_card_deepsleep.html
Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, Tiger doesn't need the drivers.

  • When will TC be upgraded to USB 3.0?

    Hey guys,
I've been thinking about a TC purchase ever since it came out, but never got around to buying one. Since I have a ***** router and two aging usb 2.0 external harddrives, I wanna go for it. Question is, if TC will be upgraded to USB 3.0 anytime soon, since the recent mb air and mb pro ugrades now come with 3.0? And second of all, does a TC make for a good router?
I look forward to your opinions / thoughts

so what in your opinion is a better option? a tc or an extreme with a pluged in external hdd? or any other router?
