Do i need to use the ethernet connection?

I use the verizon Westell 7500 modem. The computer is configured to run as a wireless device.
I'm sort of confused!!!Do I need to make a connection from the apple tv ethernet port to my modems ethernet connections.
TheApple tv amnual makes no mention about this. This makes me thin the whole setup is wireless, but I'm still scratching my head.
Is this a case of much ado about nothing?

No all it is is a way to connect. If you plug in via ethernet it will use that. If you just connect apple TV to your wifi network it will use that. It makes no difference. Obviously ethernet is quicker if you're streaming movies.

  • I want to use the ethernet connection from my new iMac to my Time Capsule.  It seems only the Wifi is seen by either device.  Ive connected the Time Capsule to the iMac.  How can I get the iMac to use the wired connection

I want to connect my iMac to my Time Capsule using Ethernet.  I have them connected via an Ethernet cable, but only WiFi seems to be working.  How can I specify the Ethernet connection instead of WiFi?  Thanks

Go to preferences, network and see if ethernet is indicated. Be sure it shows a green dot.  Also be sure it is at the top of the list (above WiFi).  If not click on the the wheel at the bottom and set service order.

  • Do you need to have the ethernet connected?

Hi, might be being really thick here but I bought the airport express on the understanding that it would lengthen and make my wifi signal stronger.  If I have it next to my router, which I can't move from its location, the airport express makes no difference the signal that I had from my router.
I thought once you had set it up you could move it to where you needed a strong signal, am I missing something here?

The AirPort Express can "extend" a wireless network and provide more wireless coverage using wireless....IF....it is used with another Apple router....an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express.
Is your "main" router one of these Apple products?

  • I can use the ethernet connection but not the wireless on my Airport Extreme to connect to the internet.

How do I get the wireless to work again? I've turned both the modem and Airport Extreme off and on again. Do I need to do a hard reset on the Extreme?

Thanks for the reply.  I've only powered down all my devices and repowered them.  When I made the switch from cable to Uverse, at some point my old USB printer connected to the Extreme spit out about 8 documents that were in its queue, and nothing since.  I can see it on the network from my Mac, but my wife's PC can't find it (and that's the real problem, if you know what I mean).  I have a new MacBook Pro, and she's running XP SP2 on her PC.  Everything worked fine when I was on cable modem service, but since I've changed to ATT Uverse, I'v had this little issue.  As you can tell, I'm a novice when it comes to networking.
    Thanks again,

  • How do I use my ethernet connection for printing on my LAN and use my Wifi on a different router and ISP to connect to the internet?

I'm in a small office, and I have to use my ethernet connection to connect to the networked copier to be able to print, but connection to which I hooked my Time Capsule is literally 20x faster when connecting to the internet.
How can I tell the computer to use the ethernet connection to print, while everything else should go through wifi?
I have been manually going back and forth changing the order in Network Preferences between ethernet and Wifi, but I'm know there must be an easier way.  Thanks for your help!

A packet going to Apple is not local. It is going to 17.149.160.49  -- So it is sent to the topmost working connection to be Routed and sent to the Internet.
A packet going to a local computer or other device that is on the same subnet (has an IP address very close to the topmost IP Address of your computer) gets sent out that port as well, but is sent directly to that computer on the local subnet, since no Routing [changing of Addresses} is needed.
A packet going to a local computer or Printer or Network Attached Storage device that is not on the topmost subnet, but is on a secondary subnet such as the second network connection would be sent directly to that computer, since no Routing is needed.
I do not understand why two Routers have the same IP Address if they are not cross-connected. That makes everything very difficult when it should be simple.

  • Will my cp1518ni connect to my network wirelessly, or do i need to use an ethernet wired connection?

I cannot find out how to connect my cp1518ni to a network with out using the ethernet connection.  Is it possible to do it wirelessly?

No, sorry, your printer does not have wireless capability.  Ethernet cables can be very long, however.  Also you could invest in "powerline ethernet" that uses your home's electrical wireing for the Ethernet connection.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

I have a Macbook Pro (2013) OS 10.8.1.  Moved into a university house and need to use ethernet cable. Bought the Thunderbold connection but when I try to use the ethernet with it a webpage comes up saying Wireless Setup and Router Setup? I have previously used ethernets in similar situations and never had to input information like this?

I have tried to turn of the wi-fi but that doesn't work either. I think it could be a something to do with the internet provider because virginmedia comes up on the webpage. This is what comes up:
    Wireless Setup
    WGR614V9
    V1.0.11_1.0.1VGUK
    Wireless Setup
    Name (SSID):
    Security Passphrase (WPA-PSK):

    1. in physical connections part can i use the same work schema
    2. Can i use same contexts created or do i need to create everything as new and then try?
    Thanks,
    Rp.
    Hi,
As you mentioned that you just upgraded the database, so the data is same and schema is same you can connect with the same work schema.
Yes, you can use the same contexts , but need to do Reverse Engineering for your new database.
And about data server, i think you also have no need to create new data server, if hostname, sid and port etc are same as these were with R11(consult with your DBAs regarding it)

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

  • I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I user ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why?

I recently upgraded my internet service with Comcast for faster internet.  When I use an ethernet connection I get 50 MB download speed....when I use the wireless connection I get 10-20 MB speed.  I have an airport extreme...3-4 years old.  Why is the speed so different and are there settings I can change to increase the wireless speed?

If your supposed to be getting 20 Mb/s down via your ISP and both Mac's are not getting that on the SpeedTest, then obviously your router appears to be the cause.
Connect one Mac directly to the ISP's modem, power off/wait 30 seconds/then power on, then power on the Mac. The ISP will connect directly to the Mac, then run a SpeedTest.
Then repeat the same for the other Mac. If both Mac's have a problem then it's possibly the ISP, the modem, your lines to them or on your property, or both Mac's are messed up.
You'll have to keep searching for the cause. Call your ISP and ask then to run a test to see if your getting your 20 Mb/s to your modem, that should clear part of the problem.

  • I have lost the correct proxy settings for the ethernet connection using Safari.  How do I get back to the original ethernet proxy settings?

I changed the ethernet proxy settings for Safari on my Mac Pro, when I was in a particular place that required extra security.  Now I cannot get the ethernet connection to work when back home.  The wireless connection works fine.  What are the original ethernet proxy settings.  How do I make the changes?
    Thanks

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click Change Settings next to Proxies. Select Automatically from the Configure pop up menu.
You may also have to select the Proxies tab. If any of the boxes are selected, deselect then click OK.

  • I can not use the Ethernet Port to connect another device.  My Airport Express allowed me to do this.

I want to use the Ethernet Port for my Apply TV for another device (Direct TV box), but it doesn't work.  I have Airport Express with an Ethernet port and I was able to plug my Direct TV box to download.

It's not designed to extend a network, and plugging in ethernet disables wi-fi in any case.
