Do I need Toast anymore?

This may seem a dopey question, but do I need Toast Titanium anymore?
I'm waiting on delivery of my MacBook and last night was considering cd/dvd burning. I only ever used Toast to burn data cd's (this will be my first superdrive). I always use iTunes for music, I guess iDVD now for home made movies, is Disk Utility all that good for burning data dvd's?

It's just as
useful a it was before even though the performance of
some of the high demand tasks, like DVD compressions,
may not be special. FYI - I'm still using Toast
Titanium 6 on my Intel Mac mini.
Good to know, how does it perform under Rosetta?

  • Do I need Toast?

I'm on a Mac running OSX 10.6.8. I've just received a special offer form Other World Computing to buy Toast 11 Pro for $49, but I have to decide by the end of April just a few days away. I was put off buying Toast last year when I purchased the Adobe Master Suite because of many poor reviews on Amazon, and because a cursory look at the Encore PDF suggested I would be able to burn Blu-rays from there. But, I've noticed a few comments in this forum saying that people don't use Encore's burning capabilities because the burn speed can't be varied.
I'm a complete novice to Premiere and Encore, working my way through the Premiere manual but not having touched Encore yet. So I need some guidance from experienced users. Given that as far as Blu-ray disks are concerned I will only be burning videos, not data, and that I'm using a Mac:
    1. Is using the Blu-ray burning capabilites within Encore a reliable solution?
    2. What are the pros of using Encore to burn a Blu-ray?
    3. What are the cons of using Encore to burn a Blu-ray?
    4. Does anyone using Encore use Toast, and what are the pros and cons?
    5. Are there any other options for burning Blu-rays out of Premiere, other than Encore and Toast?

Thanks for the replies. I'll probably take this question to the Mac forums, but before I do I noticed this statement on p163 of the Encore PDF:
DVD Image or Blu-Ray Image  Builds a Blu-ray or DVD image on your hard drive. The image is typically used for local replication by using a third-party mastering application.
The image file they talk about seems to be an ISO file.
    QUES 1
Is an ISO file of a Premiere project just like a king-size ordinary file, like tiff or aiff, that can be burned to a Blu-Ray disk by virtually any burning software? Or does an ISO file have special characteristics which require specialist handling when burning?
What I'm getting around to is this: Mac has inbuilt burning software. I've never used it to burn, but this site has instructions (and similarly here).
Burn the Disc Image with OSX Disk Utility
Do a spotlight search for Disk Utility and launch the app
Pop in a blank blu ray disc
    Click burn
Navigate to the folder containing your ISO file and choose it
    click burn
Don’t skip the verification process, it usually catches errors
Given that both sites are tertiary education sites, I assume the process works.
    QUES 2
Anyone had experience with this technique?

  • Do I need Toast 7 Titanium?

I mostly use the SuperDrive in my Rev A iMac for burning DVD's of short movies that I make, and for backup copies of those that I buy. I use an external hard drive as a clone/backup for everything on my internal drive. The reason I am asking this question is that I have seen Toast on sale for a good price with a rebate, and don't wish to miss out if I "need" it in ways that I do not yet realize.

Toast is a sweet program that is much more than just a disk burning utility. In addition to the compression, it has audio cleanup tools for importing audio from a noisy source like LPs. It also allows you to backup your Mac, spanning that data over several disks like Norton Ghost does for PCs.
BTW, what price did you find and where? I need to get it also.

  • No drag and drop from iTunes to Toast anymore

    Hello
I love to create compilations for my friends using the crossfade tool within Toast10. Now apple prevents dragging titels directly into Toast since iTunes 8 or 9. You have to copy them on the desktop first, which is great because you have to keep them there if you want to save your compilation in Toast.
Why is apple always doing such anoying things? Didn't they come up with that drag and drop idea. Now the spoil it. Does anybody know why they do this? Is there any other method to drag them into Toast? Do I now have to create two libraries – one for iTunes and one for Toast? This is absolutely stupid and needless. Absurd!
    Regards from Hamburg, Germany

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
This of course presumes it's Apple's problem to correct, and not a design change with Toast. Meanwhile, Toast (at least Toast 10) provides the Media Browser with which to select from your iTunes library.
I also presume that you're only giving your friends tracks that are in the public domain or of which they already own legal copies, yes?

  • Do I need «Toast» to do multiple burning sessions ?

I would like to be able to do multiple burning sessions on CD or DVD. Apple software doesn't seem to offer this. Maybe in iphoto 6 ? I tried installing Toast a few years ago and it screwed things up so I am looking for another solution if there is one. Many thanks.

If you're trying to burn from within iPhoto via the Share->Burn menu option to get a iPhoto disc that will mount and can be used by iPhoto like this then you can't do multiple burns. iPhoto does not support multiple sessions.
There are 3rd party applications that will facilitate multiple burns to a CD. You can several by searching at VersionTracker.com for "multiple burn" or "multiple sessions". Toast can also produce multiple session disks.

  • Has OSX 10.6 Got A Disc-Spanning Facility Like Toast?

A few weeks ago whilst rooting around in my iMac I am sure I saw a disc-spanning facility like you have in Toast.
For anyone who doesn't know, disc-spanning enables you to split something like an 8GB disk image onto 2 standard DVDs for storage.
When you want to use it, the computer magically combines the two (or more) sections to "reconstitute" the disk image etc. back to its original condition.
When I saw this facility I thought, "I don't need Toast anymore".
However, I can't find it now.
So did I imagine it or can someone tell me where it is?
After searching I have found an ability to make "Concatenated Disk Sets" but I don't think that is the same thing.
It seems to apply mainly to Hard Drives.
Message was edited by: Ian R. Brown

    Thanks Malcolm.
I believe that both Split&Concat and Terminal have a 2GB limit to each part because of something to do with "resource forks" (whatever they are) so I have formulated this possible workflow for someone wishing to put an 8GB AVCHD memory file system on 2 standard DVDs.
Do you reckon it will work OK?
    1. Turn the AVCHD memory card's file system into a disk image using DU.
    2. Use Split&Concat to convert it to 4 parts of 2GB.
    3. Copy those 4 sections onto 2 DVDs.
To reconstitute the memory card at a later date, simply copy the four sections back onto the desktop and set Split&Concat to concatenate them.
You are then left with a perfect copy of the .dmg containing the memory card file structure.

  • Do I need the ethernet cable anymore?

I recently discovered that my DSL modem and Internet plan supports WI-FI, so I can access the Internet throughout the house. When I bring my iMac to another room, it can, of course, access the Web wirelessly.
When I bring the iMac back to the original room, I re-plug the ethernet cable back in, but the question arises as to whether I even need it anymore.
Is this necessary? Are there still advantages to having the Mac plugged in directly to the Internet or can I safely eliminate an extra piece of cable clutter by removing this cord?

I for one, keep my iMac plugged into the ethernet.  I am not lugging that thing all over the house just to get free wifi.
When I first got my iMac I used wifi for about a month until I noticed all of my connected "devices" started getting funky.  After plugging my iMac to the ethernet all my "devices" were happy campers.
