Do i needt to turn off sharing before exiting itunes

I was wondering if I need to turn off home sharing before exiting itunes because the itunesprefs.xml  got corrupted ( I guess, because itunes wouldn't exit completely until I deleted the prefs file and itunes created a new prefs file the next time I ran it).

I believe that if someone is looking at your library, they need to "eject" it before you can close iTunes but I'm pretty sure you can leave Home Sharing on before exiting.
I leave it on and I have had no problems at all.

I get this message: This computer’s local hostname “x-8.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “x-9.local” I have turned off sharing and it continues to upgrade name. What is the fix?

Hi, this is a common problem, mostly just irksome though.
It can have many cause, like using more than one Interface for connections, Router temporarily losing x.local & seeing a new connection with x.local already used, insists it must be x-1.local, x-2.local, etc..
What all Sharing do you have enabled?
    Some possible fixes...

  • TS1741 Does anyone have trouble with the Remote app losing contact with the iTunes library after it has been connected and working fine for a while. If I go to the computer and turn off sharing, then turn it back on, it will relocate the library again.

My iTunes remote app on my ipad mini will work fine for a while and then it will lose the library. I then have to turn off sharing on the computer and then turn it back on. This will work for a while and then I will have to repeat the process. Help!

I have just found the problem to be windows firewall on my library PC
I can only presume there has been an update to windows firewall or iTunes
all the relevant programs were on the allowed list
I'm now currently running with firewall turned off on my library PC.
I'll update when i have found the rogue setting.

This has been asked before by someone else but they recieved no answers so I'll try again.
Can I turn off automatic download of Itunes Extras.  I never use them and have to delete them and they hold up downloads of what I want?
    Thanks

Thanks Michael. I had no idea that that menu was even there, and it seems odd that it's not accessible frome the regular menu bar (or is it??). But indeed, I do see it now and this may help. The reason I said this approach is still less than ideal is that it will require me to remember all of the accidental unflaggings between syncs to my computer, and then manually reflag everything.... and if I want to be sure to do it right I'll have to take notes etc, which is quite a burden just to get around something that used to work effortlessly and automatically until Apple "improved" it... But thanks!

You can protect your backup with a passcode using the Encrypt Backup option in the Summary pane. Encrypting your backup will back up your Keychain. This way, email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications will be remembered when you transfer to a new device. My iphone 3g is stuck on the apple logo and wont even turn off, or connect to itunes. what do i do?

    I've got the same problem.
I wanted to download the new itunes version for iphone but it got stuck. I had no choice but disconnecting my iphone. Then I couldn't sync it anymore.
I switched off my phone by holding down the sleep button but it has never successfully switched off. The round thing still turns.
I've tried to connect it back to the itunes. This is the error message I get: itunes can't connect to the iphone. Code 0xE8000065. I tried to find out what error message this is but the apple support site I saw didn't mention this error code.
    Can anyone help? Thaaanks!
