Do I really have to erase everything and start again?

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read this! I'll try to be as succinct as possible.
My boyfriend's MacBook, which I also use for my own music library, died some time ago and had to be reset at the local Apple Store. All data was lost on the hard drive, but the machine is up and running again.
Just bought a new CD and added it to the iTunes library, and iTunes recognised my phone when I connected it. My iPhone 4S has always been set to manually manage music and videos as we both have very different taste in music. Simply syncing is not an option. On dragging the songs to my phone in the menu in the top right, iTunes highlighted my phone, I let go and nothing happened. The songs were not transferred to my phone. I tried again and no result.
I went to my iPhone's settings and noticed that 'manually manage music and videos' had become unchecked. All other settings had been unaffected, as far as I could tell. I set it to 'manually manage music and videos' and clicked 'apply'. I got a message indicating that I needed to 'erase and sync' because of a problem with the authorisation of my phone with this computer. The phone was obviously authorised previously, before the hard drive had to be wiped.
Is there a way around this? Can I remind iTunes that my phone has already been authorised somehow? With over 25 GB of music on my phone I am desperately keen to avoid spending countless hours going through hundreds of CDs and rebuilding the library on the MacBook so that I can transfer it all back.
To make matters all the more frustrating, because of my working hours I cannot call Apple Support since they are not available when I am free.
The MacBook has the latest operating system but I cannot recall what it's called, and iTunes 10.0.3. The iPhone 4S is running iOS 6.0.1.
Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks!

You can only sync/manually manage music with one iTunes library at a time. Since the computer was wiped/reloaded, this is now a different iTunes library.

    What makes you think I can't use my phone in another country or with another sim.  You obviously can't, but we are hardly going to talk about hacking an Apple phone on the Apple site.  By the way mine is officially unlocked so can swap sims within seconds.

    Hi, I got a big problem. I restored my macbook pro and after I erased everything and started to restall the system, it showed I need to give the apple ID that was purchased the lion. The problem is that I lost my installing CD, and I don't have an ID with lion purchased, so what should I do? Do you sell the system software?

    This is a user forum; we're not  Apple.
    Please contact the Apple Support folks directly for issues related to hardware and software purchases.
    The particular model of MacBook Pro is a key detail here, as the Mac model will determine the oldest version it can boot, as well as whether it'll boot more current software.
    AFAIK there is and was no Lion installer DVD available.  It was a download.  AFAIK, the last DVDs commonly available were for Snow Leopard 10.6.  Snow Leopard DVDs are still available in the Apple online store in various countries, if your MacBook Pro is old enough to be able to boot that version.
    If your MacBook Pro purchase with Lion wasn't registered with Apple, then you'll have to discuss this directly with the Apple Support folks, or repurchase Lion from the Mac App Store (which will usually involve a call to Apple for a redemption code as it's old software), or you'll "purchase" (it's free) Mavericks OS X 10.9 and wipe and install that assuming your MacBook Pro supports Mavericks.  If you didn't purchase the MacBook Pro from Apple (and it was shipped with an older release), then you'll end up acquiring a redemption code from Apple for Lion, or installing Mavericks.
    For completeness and given you're probably already aware of this, the usual approach for restoration with recent OS X versions is via the recovery boot (more details).  If the disk is wiped and you can't get Lion, then you'll probably end up reinstalling with Target Disk Mode using another Mac with a compatible FireWire or Thunderbolt port and a cable.  Or visit the local Apple Store.
    sputniki: Once OS X 10.7 or 10.9 has been reinstalled, yes, getting Time Machine configured and going is undoubtedly on the agenda.  But had there been a viable backup here, I expect jianghua would have used it.

  • I am wondering if it will be a good move to install fusion 5 on my iMac. I am wondering since I did the split to run windows 7 if this means that I will have to erase all and start from the beginning

    I am wondering if it will be a good move to install fusion 5 on my iMac. I am wondering since I did the split to run windows 7 if this means that I will have to erase all and start from the beginning

    From what you say, I understand that you already installed Windows 7 on a second volume. Is this correct?
    In that case, it doesn't make sense to use VMware Fusion unless you want to run Windows and OS X at the same time. If you do that, you will keep all your data.
    If you haven't installed Windows 7 and you want to install it in VMware Fusion, you will be installing it in a virtual machine, so you won't lose anything.
    I recommend you to have a look at VirtualBox first > http://www.virtualbox.org It's free and it's sufficient for most of users

  • Wiping everything and starting again

    Hi All,
    Forgive my ignorance but I can' seem to get a straight answer on the web.
    My macbook's been getting a bit sluggish so I upgraded to leopard from tiger and this has sped it up a bit, but I've decided I want to wipe everything and start again with a clean version of leopard.
    What's the best way to do this?
    Is it to "boot" from the leopard CD? How do I do that?
    Obviously I have backed everything up and I don't mind investing the time to re-install my apps
    Thanks
    Luke

    I agree with Allan that an Erase & Install is probably overkill.
    Try these intermediate step before following the directions for the Erase & Install:
    Start up from the install disk (holding down the C key during restart);
    From the Utilities menu select Disk Utilities and run the Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.
    Restart and see if this helps.
    If not, start up from the install disk again and from the install Options, select Archive & Install.
    The Repairs will clean up all the system files. The Archive & Install will replace the old system files with new ones, moving the old system files to a folder named Previous System.
    If that doesn’t seem to help, since you have a full bootable backup, you can go ahead and try the Erase & Install.

    Bryan,
    Do you have a second hard drive?  If you can get the install disk to boot the computer then all is not lost.  Install a clean system on a second hard drive to get back in business.  If you have any backup copies of your software and files, use them to restore your computer to good working condition.
    Then, install some form of data recovery software on your second drive.  The recovery software can look at a bit mapped version of your drive and extract data that may be scrambled but usable.  Think of the drive as a book.  If someone tore out a few pages from the table of contents or index from a book, the main volume would be there but the book would not be repairable.  Or, if the table of contents is OK but someone tore out a chapter or two, the other chapters would be there.  The book is not complete but all is not lost.
    Here is a review to get you up to speed:
    http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-recovery-software/
    Start by getting your computer working off a clean install on a second drive so the data recovery process will work faster and have a destination for the recovered data.

    When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
    Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
    (You also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
    orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
    On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now")
    (2) Remove the site's cookies using either of these. Save any pending work first.
    While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

    Your UserAgent string in Firefox is probably messed up by another program that you installed. <br />
    [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Agent]
    type '''about:config''' in the URL bar and hit Enter <br />
    ''If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.'' <br />
    Filter = '''general.useragent.''' <br />
    Right-click the preferences that are '''bold''', one line at a time, and select '''''Reset'''''. <br />
    Then restart Firefox
    Once that is fixed, see if chat and private messaging are still giving you a problem.

  • Trying to do app updates on my mums mini ipad its registered to her email but keeps coming up to sign in with my email which i use on my ipad i have deleted all apps and started again buy downloading them on her email but its still doing it on my email

    my mums ipad mini i need to do app udates on it but its keeps coming up with it to sign in with my apple id iv deleted all the apps of her ipad and signed in with her apple id but its still asking for my id to download the apps with what can i do to get it to go to her id to do the updates thanks

    Hi neique,
    When you update apps, you will be asked for the password that belongs to whatever Apple ID purchased those apps. They will forever be linked to the Apple ID that they were purchased under, so regardless of where they are loaded, or what Apple ID is signed onto the device that they are loaded on, when you try to update, it is going to ask for the "owners" password.
    Cheers,

  • Update iOs 4.x to 6.x - do I really have to erase and restore device?

    Do I really have to "erase and restore your device" as stated at the top of this support page:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
    in order to update iOS 4.x to 6.x (iPhone 4)?

    Yes.
    See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

    Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
    These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
    A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
    Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
    In most cases the problems may be caused by:
    Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
