If all you want to do is get an audio interface and connect a mic, Garageband may be all you need.
Garageband actually shares the same fundamental audio engine with Logic, it's just that GB's interface is far more simple at the price of far less features. Even in its stripped down state, it's amazing what you can do with GB, and do easily... which has a musical value in and of itself.
Sometimes "artists" will work in GB and then send their tracks to a producer who will open them up in Logic to do more exacting editing and production.
If you are interested in having access to many more features and a more robust, professional creative environment, Logic would be the way to go. Given everything that comes with it, Logic Studio is a bargain.
However, if you're just starting out, why not start with GB and see how you like it? If you get an interface and a mic you could be up and running with GB in the time it takes to toast a Pop-Tart. Then, if you want to upgrade to Logic, you can always do that and Logic can always open up your GB projects.

  • Tell me where to go-I have bought logic express 8 - Recording live music.

    I have Macbook 2
    Presonus Firepod 8 in
    PA gear
    500 gig Firewire drive
We play live and I just want to hit record and play.
I stop at breaks and save the files.
    All of this works great!
Now any advice for someone who has five hours of music recorded with the default settings for each channel. For example why does it say midi files instead of audio files?
Hey I am serious, I am looking up at a real steep learning curve.
I have mixed some material down (bounced) to Itunes, it sounds great, but I am driving a fast car with no experience. So any advice, ABC's of live recording, any tips?
I am just a guitar player in his fifties who has been given the tools, but could sure use some common sense.

    Hi, and welcome!
Please note this is the Logic Pro forum - you should post your queries in the Logic Express forum.
So... No one here is going to type out the Getting Started manual for you - crack it open with a cup of coffee, or if you really can't be arsed to read a manual, then I'd suggest getting some tutorial videos from MacProVideo.com - about the fastest way of getting you up to speed with Logic.

  • Can logic express 7 record samples with the internal mic

hey im thinking about buying Logic express 7, however im am wondering if it can record samples using the internal mic, or straight off the soundcard. for example say if i liked a sound i heard on youtube and i wanted to sample that sound so i could use it in a composition, how would i be able to do this? i have been doing this with my PC using a program called Audacity but im wondering if Mac has that option or more specifically if any Logic program has that option.
would anyone be able to help me?

thanks mate, does that come with logic? or is it a separate program, if so where do i get it and how much is it?

  • Help! Logic Express 8 does not work on my Mac Pro with OS 10.5.1

Hello, I hope somebody around here is able to help me.
I have got a new Mac Pro with one Quad core processor since yesterday and it works fine except for Logic Express 8 (version 8.0.1). Whenever I start Logic the program crashes as soon as "Core Audio initialisieren" is shown in the display. I have tried to reinstall the program, deleted it completely and installed it again. It is always the same.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? What can I do about it? I am a musician and I really need Logic Express to run.

Confused. 10.6 is DVD based. Only Lion and above are downloads.
And best install is not to upgrade. Do a clean install  - on another drive.
Corrupt partition tables or bad sectors or no room to adjust the partitions or the directory is corrupt.
ERASE the drive if Repair Disk didn't work.

  • Question about logic pro 7 & logic express

I have been working in Logic Platinum 4.7 for several years & need to upgrade - I work mainly in MIDI for new Age music and add 1 or 2 live audio tracks - I don't use a lot of effects and never use loops - a salesman at Sweetwater suggested that I might only need logic express rather than Pro 7 - does anyone know if logic express can do all that logic 4.7 did? I particularly need to edit MIDI notes in the score format - and is it true that I dont' need a mixing board any more even though I still want to use my Kurzweil sampler, PC 88 MX and Proteus modules? I do not know about 4.7 but I do have Logic Express which
I used for about 6 months before upgrading. I would think
that you will be fine if all you are doing is what you described
here. You really dont need a mixer but you might want to
look at a control surface which gives you the feel of a mixer.
I suggest the Behringer BCF2000, Only 200 and it emulates
a Logic Control. As far as interfaces you are going to find
alot of different opinions here so you should check them
all out. It comes down to how much you are willing to spend.

  • Deleting plug ins + Logic Express

Hi I have recently bought Logic 8 studio and dont need logic express 7. i cant seem to delete the entire program. does anyone know how to completely wipe Logic express 7 from the system drive?
also im using Toontrack's DFH Superior drum sample plug in. i dont need this anymore and would like to uninstall this too. how do you unistall audio plug ins on a mac?
    cheers

Josh since I've never used Logic I really can't say. I did however find this:
Another approach you might consider is reinstalling Logic Express. To do this effectively, you need to remove the application and its receipts, then install Logic Express and use Software Update to install additional updates. You don't have to remove everything that was installed with Logic Express. Follow the steps below to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Logic Express. Note: Make sure that you have your installation discs and serial number handy before starting this.
    Open the Applications folder.
Drag the Logic Express application to the Trash.
    Go to /Library/Receipts.
In the Receipts folder, select the "Logic Express.pkg" file.
Choose View > as List to view the contents in a list.
Click the Date Modified column header so you can easily see all of the receipts that were installed at the same time as Logic Express.
Drag the Logic Express.pkg receipt to the Trash, as well as any other items that have the same modification date within 3 minutes of the Logic Express.pkg's modification date.
Click the Name column header to sort the list alphabetically.
Drag any other receipts whose names begin with "Logic Express" to the Trash.
Insert your Logic Express installation disc and install Logic Express.
When finished, use Software Update (under the Apple menu) to update your software to the latest version.
It concerns removing Logic Express and reinstalling as a troubleshooting measure. However I would assume you could use it as a guide in just plain uninstalling.

  • Need Help!! recording Korg MS2000 in Logic express 8.

So I've been trying to record sounds from my korg ms2k in logic express 8 but I can't seem to access any of the sounds. My connections are solid because I tested them in macs audio MIDI setup, plus I'm able to use the ms2k to control the software instruments which came with logic. I created an environment based on tutorials I could find online, connected my MIDI port found in the physical input to the sequencer input & armed the track but nothing happens. I also performed a data dump on my korg and downloaded a patch librarian but I'm not really sure how to access it within logic. I'm kinda new to all this and it's highly probable that I'm missing some steps or doing something wrong. If any one can give me a hand with this I truly would appreciate it. Thanks.

I see ... well since you can record using the internal virtual instruments your midi data is going to Logic so it HAS to be something in the settings. Wish I could be more specific but I personally haven't used that function. If you don't get an answer here try this forum.

They are VERY "business like" and not much on pleasant small talk BUT they know what they're talking about and can probably tell you exactly what you need to do.
    Good luck.

  • ADAT into Logic Express, VERY low signals recorded

I tried Garageband, same problem, so now I am trying Logic Express.
When transferring tracks from an ADAT, through Alesis io/14, into Logic, the resulting sound files captured are VERY low signal. This should be a digitally ACCURATE TRANSFER. The Alesis montoring software on the mac senses the correct signal, the signal meters show correct levels (and sounds great), but Logic hears and records very low signals.
I note the Sound midi pref window only shows 6 channel 32 bit. It won't allow me to change to 8 channel 16 bit. Possible problem or am I chasing ghosts? I exhausted all my ideas.
    Any thoughts?

Discovering I was unable to import a ".au" file into Logic Express (or Garage Band) I read it into Sound Studio and exported it in a variety of formats. I can now successfully drag to Garage Band files in formats .aif .aifc .sd2 and .wav and get the expected result.
Unfortunately however, I only get the expected result importing these into Logic Express for the .aifc format which plays back at the expected speed with a low-pitched sound (but which doesn't display an uncompressed waveform). Importing the .aif .sd2 or .wav format files however results in the imported file being squeezed into a very short duration with a correspondingly undesirable very high pitch.
Is there some setting or magic incantation I need for reading in audio files to Logic Express without it getting squeezed?
    Thanks!
    --Roph
Yes. you need to ascend to level 5 before we give that secret incantation.
Really, you need to use a third party converter software, if you are going to use .au files.
Logic is happiest with .aiff, .wav files, but not much else.

  • Recording a live DJ mix WITH LOGIC EXPRESS

    Hi
I really need to know how to set up and record through logic express with my new MAC. I used to use Soundforge with a PC but now am completely confused!
A bit of advice would be appreciated!

    1. Launch Logic
1b. go to Logic preferences and select your audio input source.
    2. file- select 'new'
    3. a window will pop up - audio or instrument - choose audio
    4. choose 'stereo' , I expect.
    5. Hit the record button and choose where you files are going to be kept
    6. record your thing
    7. In the master track that you probably see, choose 'bounce' Take note of the start and end point numbers. You would think when you tell it to bounce it would do that but - no - Logic needs to know bounce from where to where? Choose the file name and bounce away!! Good luck.

  • Problems recording using Logic Express 9

    Hi everybody,
I'm a new Mac user. I'm a musician and I recently started to use a home studio for small projects.
Lately, I acquired some nice microphones to record a classical guitar and other acoustic instruments through Logic. However, something's going wrong and I can't make it work.
Before I describe the problem, let me tell you what I use:
    - iMac (OS Lion 10.7)
    - Logic Express 9
    - m-audio Fast track ultra
    - Rode NT5 condenser microphones
    Problem:
As stated before, I'm having trouble using my microphones. Logic just doesn't hear the signal. However, if I plug a guitar directly into the m-audio box andf then into Logic, I can record no problem. Same thing if I use an electric piano (Yamaha P-95) into the m-audio box then into Logic with the Midi sound bank, everything's fine! It all goes dead when I plug in the microphones. The weird thing is that I can hear and see the signal through the m-audio box using headphones. However, Logic doesn't even show me a sign of any activity. I thought it had something to do with the Phantom power, but no. I tried and nothing. My guess is that something needs to be activated in Logic but I just can't find it.
    Anybody with an idea?
    thanks
    CJ

    Hi,
no worries, these are all good suggestions to check out.
Actually, I did all of this already, but the problem was somewhere else....
I finally found what it was. The m-audio has a software that has a board control and the "software returns" signal was off.
Also, a good "restart" of my computer made things a bit easier.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Need advice on a switch from GB2 to Logic Express

    Hey people,
So I love GB2, obviously, but I can no longer stand not having any track automation. I want to be able to add effects to a single track in different sections, and of varying degrees. For instance, I want to increase the reverb on a single guitar track as it plays, instead of fading in a duplicate track with the reverb added. Know what I mean?
    So I want Logic Express.
My REAL question is the following: HOW MUCH BETTER AND MORE CLEAR WILL MY MUSIC SOUND WITH LOGIC? Is the 24-bit audio resolution available in Logic REALLY GOOD? Will recording midi and audio in Logic sound more "real" and less fakey? Sometimes my GB2 tracks come out sounding unprofessional, especially when exported to iTunes, converted to mp3 and burned to CD, and played in a car stereo. Something doens't sound right, you know what I mean?
Anyway, I want to know if it's worht it to switch to Logic for those two reasons: track automation and an overall increase in SOUND QUALITY.
You guys friggin' rock, thanks for your help.

GB2, as you know, exports a track to AAC format
It's AIFF that GB exports, which is uncompressed and the highest quality. AAC is another compressed format which again tosses out data.
Still, will Logic offer me higher sound quality?
This can easily become a Theory and Reality discussion. A LOT will depend on your expertise as an engineer. The end result, if you'll be burning a CD, will be a file sampled at a rate of 44.1K. This is the standard for CD audio regardless of what you use to create it.
LE will let you record at a higher rate than GB will, but a questionable recording, sampled at a higher rate will still be a questionable recording ... it'll just take up more disc space.
My opinion is that in the right hands, yes, one could probably get a better sounding recording with the expanded limits LE offers. In reality, just having LE is not going to make everything sound better.

  • Sountrack or Logic/Logic Express for voice over recording?

    Hello,
I am wondering which software is best for voice over work? Sountrack or Logic/Logic Express?
Any input would be great. I would add the standard effects/filters to certain voice overs and add sound effects and music.
I have a midi/guitar and garage band is enough for me. I would not want to use Garageband as my software of choice for voice over work. I want markers and other more advanced tools?
    Thanks,
    Erik

    Thanks for the answer.
I was looking at the Dialogue Tools in Sountrack and they appear to be perfect.
My main questrion is can record into Sountrack with a mic right? I have an m-audio saphire with a m-audio preamp.
I saw a demo of Soundtrack at NAB and all the effects looked perfect for voice over. I think Logic Studio is overkill but Sountrack and Logic Express( for my guitar) might be a perfect 1-2 punch. I will get Sountrack with The Final Cut Studio as I need video tools as well.
    Thanks,
    Erik

  • Cannot Record Audio using Logic Express 7.0.0 on 13" Macbook

Help! I have Logic Express 7.0.0 and am running it in on an Intel model Macbook 1.8Ghz, 13''. I do not have an external soundcard. Will this version of Logic Express allow me to record live audio if I do not have an external soundcard? I only want to be able to record & edit a single audio track, so thought I might be able to. I cannot seem to get the 'R' (Record) button to appear despite activating it in the >View< section, so I cannot arm any tracks, and so cannot record. Is there a bug with this version of Logic and the Intel Macs? Do I need to update? If so, what would be the best way to update?
    Regards,
    Lee

Intel Macbook 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   No External Soundcard

I updated to Logic Express 7.0.1 successfully but the problem wasn't solved. Now if I try to update to Logic Express 7.2.0 it says that it cannot find the correct version of Logic Express. Im not sure how updating works - Can Logic Express 7.0.1 be updated to Logic Express 7.2.0?

  • Logic Express for news recording and editing?

Based on the recommendation of many friends who work in public radio I bought a Digidesign M-Box 2 Mini and got ProTools to use for doing audio editing on news and spoken word projects. The thing has been a real pain in the butt causing me hundreds of system crashes and endless problems with my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). Digidesign has admitted that their M-Box driver is defective but they can't fix the current drivers 'cause they are soooo busy working on support for Snow Leopard (Which they may deliver sometime in Spring 2010). ProTools also requires that you have the M-Box connected to your system in order to launch the program.
I'm fed up with being forced to connect a defective interface to my laptop every time I want to use ProTools and ready to try something else. Are the audio editing tools in the new Logic Express 9 good enough to use for this kind of work?
I could almost get away with using Garage Band but it's a bit limited with support for only 16-bit audio (most news sources are pretty quiet and need boosting) and the GB interface makes me crazy.

I think Logic is overkill for what you need - you'll never use 95% of it for recording/editing spoken word audio files.
Although I'm not familiar with manipulating audio for news use, I'd think that something like Amadeus Pro would do the job.
    http://www.hairersoft.com/AmadeusPro/AmadeusPro.html
with an interface such as an AudioFire like this:
    http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire4/index.php
which is very good quality, reliable, and not expensive.
BTW, recent versions of GarageBand do support 24-bit recording.
