Do I really need to Shadow Copy Backup Drive?

I am running SBS 2011 Standard. Every once in a while I get "volsnap event id 25 (The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377} were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow
in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.)".
The referenced volume is actually my backup drive which is a "simple, basic, NTFS primary partition" without an assigned drive letter which is entirely devoted to Windows backup destination drive.
VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE shows:
Shadow Copy Storage association
   For volume: (\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\)\\?\Volume{4ba
c8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\
   Shadow Copy Storage volume: (\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}
\)\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.094 MB (0%)
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.93 GB (1%)
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED (100%)
which I assume means VSS is actually keeping a shadow copy of the backup drive (or trying to).
My question is - do I really need to shadow copy this volume? If not would I stop this by the following command?
VSSADMIN DELETE SHADOWSTORAGE /FOR={4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}

Just did a quick bit of research on this and I think the error may be misleading.
If you go into Disk Management, right click Disk Management, All Tasks - Configure Shadow Copies
Do they show as Disabled on that volumeID?
If I go into Windows Server Backup and check out the Details, I see (on this system) 70.63gb of Backup Items, and 186gb of Copies. Which tallies up with what I see under List ShadowStorage.
So, what I suspect is happening (although happy to be proved wrong) is that the error above is VSC making space on your backup disk, or some other management process of the backups themselves.
I expect if you delete that Shadow Storage you will in fact, be deleting the backups.

Yes, it will do a full backup.
and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?
Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups.  When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it.

  • Really need help on formatting a drive to use with time machine.

I have a 250GB EXT. Hard drive, I would like to use 200GB for time machine and the remaining 50Gb I woul like to leave free and if possible have that 50GB partition compatible with windows since I might need to copy stuff to my wires windows 7 machine. Is this possible Im not very good at partioning.
Right now the Hdd has all my pics and music from my old PC that I will be transferring over to the new MacBook pro. Please help. Thanks

TM can backup only to one drive. That backup drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive that you backup. If your internal HDD is 320 GBs, then the TM backup drive should be at least 640 GBs or TM will run out of space.
If you can't provide that and can only allocate 320 GBs to a backup, then don't use TM. Consider using backup software that clones your internal HDD then incrementally updates the clone using scheduled backup times. Some suitable software are:
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard

  • Do I really need to buy an external drive to burn DVDs on my eMac (10.4)?

I have been trying to burn DVDs (using DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs) on my eMac (OS 10.4) without success. The machine just acts as if nothing has been put in the drive; it whirrs and whirrs, no icon appears, no error message, nothing, until after half an hour or so I have to just eject it. On another forum, I was told that the problem was probably that my eMac can't recognize blank DVD-Rs, let alone burn them, without an external drive that has to be purchased separately. I want to be sure that's really true before buying anything, needless to say!
Another string on this forum suggested looking under "optical drive" under "About This Mac" to find out this kind of thing. I see nothing that specifically says "optical drive," but under Hardware and Disc Burning, it says:
    HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B:
    Firmware Revision: 2.05
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    Media: No
Is this enough information for someone to please be able to tell me whether I do indeed need to buy an external disc drive before I can burn DVDs?
(And, if so, what kind of drive is recommended?)
Thanks in advance for any help.

While you can replace the intenal drive, opening up an eMac is not a trivial process and it's far easier to add an external drive. Go with Firewire rather than USB, even if your eMac is USB 2.0; support for Firewire under OS X is better and more stable. You can get a Firewire enclosure for around US$30 to $40 and a bare DVD-RW/CD-RW for about the same; or buy a complete system for around US$130 to $200 depending on features such as third-party burning software (Toast) or built-in label making with special DVD-R or CD-R blanks (LightScribe). OS X 10.3.3 and higher (which of course includes the 10.4 in your profile) includes native support for DVD-R burning, so you don't strictly need third-party software such as Toast, but Toast is more flexible than the built-in burner and allows for packing more data on a disc since Toast has better control over the disc's directory size. LightScribe is an appealing idea, but slow, and the blanks are expensive. When consideringf whether to roll your own, so to speak, with an enclosure and bare drive, don't overlook that you'll need a good-quality Firewire cable; cheap cables can cause a surprising amount of grief. Unless you have a bare DVD-RW drive handy, I persoanlly find the convenience of a commercial drive, with cable and power supply/cord already packaged together, outweighs the savings of assembling a drive yourself. I'm partial to LaCie D2 Firewire drives myself, but there are other models that work fine.

  • Does Tiger really need 3GB on my hard drive?

Hi. I have an old PB with 10.2 Jaguar I was thinking of upgrading to Tiger. All the system requires are met but both Apple and Wikipedia say it needs 3GB hard drive to install. I used my PB for video editing since its ancient version of iMovie is good enough for what I do. However I only have 18GB free space on the PB's HD which translates to only about 90 minutes of raw DV video. If Tiger needs another 3GB (I have no interest in that XCode 2 Developer Tools stuff) I calculate that will take away 15 minutes from my already somewhat limited video storage capacity on the PB. My question is, is the 3GB Tiger needs in addition to Jaguar or is that only for a fresh install and it will be somewhat less since I already have 10.2?

    Tiger probably does need as much free or unused space as it can get;
and probably could use a larger capacity hard disk drive installed into
that older computer for best results; and if the actual chip RAM is not
as much as the computer can support, upgrade that, to the Max, too.
The 'unused' space on a computer's hard disk drive is used for swap
space, temp files, and Virtual Memory by the System and by the Apps.
Some apps save copies of changes to their works-in-progress; so an
actual file size may require many multiple times the space, a final will.
When the computer's configuration runs low on resources, the OS and
Apps may be subject to an over-writing of their vital content; when the
System's space gets cannibalized by itself, you will find failure results.
My computers, seldom used for more than some image editing and a
little music listening (no libraries are stored on the Mac's HDD) are of
at least +50% to 75% Empty+ of saved content. But that does not mean
the amount of 'free space' remains that way all the time. It is available
for running several apps at the same time; their Virtual Memory, and any
swap space. The ability of Mac OS X to multi-task also depends on this.
So, IMO, you'd need probably +ten times+ what you are asking about.
And that, just to have the OS and basic apps run without risk.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • System State Backup - 2008R2 - Volume Shadow Copy Error

I am attempting to do  system state backup in my Test environment.  I am running Hyper-V on a standalone "sandbox" server.  I have configured a semi-duplicate environment.
We are updating the schema soon, and I would like to do a System State restore for practice and I haven't actually had to do one in about 10 years.
I am running 2008R2 DC as a VM in my Hyper-V environment.  It has a C: and E: volume, VSS is enabled on e: and set to Unlimited.  I set my set "BackupLocation=e:\adbackups" and attempt to run wbadmin.exe start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:"E:"
(with quotes or without it still fails.
My error from command is Error - Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error (0x800423f4) which appears to be a generic error.  In the Backup Event Viewer it shows as Event ID 9, another generic error.
I am running as Domain Admin, and I checked that I have Backup Operator rights.  Volume Shadow Copy service is running.

    Hello Chris,
This issue occurs if any of the virtual disks attached to the guest VM was created by using the option to copy the contents of a physical disk. Please refer the below mentioned MS KB..
Backup of a Hyper-V virtual machine fails with error 0x800423f4 if the disk signature on a virtual hard disk is the same as a physical disk on the Hyper-V host

    Hold on,
Have you talked to your carrier to confirm the unlock?
What was the procedure you did to unlock the phone?
Standard unlocking procedure once processed by the carrier:
    Backup in iTunes
Erase the phone (ignore restore terminology here)
Plug the phone to the computer and then launch iTunes
    Wait for unlock notification.
    Restore the backup.

    -Reece,
We only have 1 single domain, 1 domain forest, no subdomains, only alias. I had replied to the other post as well. But I am happy to paste it here in case anyone want to read it.
So, after a few months of testing, capture and sending logs back and forth to Apple Engineers, we found out there is a setting in AD, under User Account that prevent us to log into AD from Mountain Lion. If you would go to your AD server, open up a user account properties, then go to Account tab, the "Do not require Kerberos preauthentication" option is checked. As soon as I uncheck that option, immediately I was able to log into AD on the Mac client. Apple engineers copied all my AD settings and setup a test environment on their end and match exact mine AD environment. They was able to reproduce this issue.
The bad part about this is... our environment required the "Do not require Kerberos preauthentication" is checked in AD, in order for our users to login into some of our Unix and Linux services. Which mean that it is impossible for us to remove that check mark because most, if not all of them some way or another require to login into applications that run on Unix and Linux. Apple is working to see if they can come up with a fix. Apparently, no one has report this issue except us. I believe most of you out there don't have that check mark checked in your environment... Anyone out there have any suggestion to by pass or have a work around for this?

Next I check Shadow Copies details from volume properties (right click on C or other drive then select properties then click on Shadow Copies Tab) and found it is showing the same error code..
From this error it is clear that the issue is inside the registry hive and due to junk hive shadow copies services not able to working properly.
For me the server have two disk we check disk signature at MBR and found the disk signature was.
    Signature disk 0 : 9351912b
    Signature disk 0 : FDFBE035
But at registry we found lot of nonexistance signature. Which indicate lot of junk valu inside registry.
Now how can we resolve this issue?
It is very simple just delete the registry key “volume” (registry key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\STORAGE\Volume”) and reboot the server it will “Volume” registry hive automatically.
    Note:
When you remove registry key it is showing error unable to delete, then please right click on it select permission then take ownership and assign full permission to your login account.
Please be careful when you delete registry key because system can fully crashed if you delete or modify wrong registry key.
Your can take a backup of the registry key by exporting.

Whem i'm doing the backup it automaticaly saves contacts.....because i've synced with another computer and it deleted all my contacts...and i really need them!!!!!

If you haven't been using your phone as recommended, then you've lost all your contacts.  Contacts should be synched to your computer (Address Book, Outlook) or a cloud service (MobileMe, Google) for safekeeping.  The iPhone was never intended to be a storage device.
If you haven't been using your phone as recommended and synching your contacts as above, frankly, you've no one to blame for your loss of data but yourself.
On that topic, are you making regular backups of your computer's data as well?  Hard drives WILL fail.

  • The creation of the shadow copy on the backup destination has failed. Detailed Error: The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with the error 0x80042316

When using Microsoft Backup on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2 - [Microsoft version 6.0.6002]) I get the error "The creation of the shadow copy on the backup destination has failed. Detailed Error: The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with the
    error 0x80042316"
The odd thing is that when I start the backup manually, it works fine. When  it runs automatically the error appears.
When doing a SFC /scannow I do get errors that can't be corrected.
Is there anything short of rebuilding this machine (It's a DC and the only one this office has) I can do to fix this?

    Hi,
0x80042316 means "Another shadow copy creation is already in progress". This error could occur when another VSS instance is running.
Is there any third party backup application installed? Try to uninstall it to see the result. And please also check if there is another backup schedule which causes the conflict.
Meanwhile please provide the result of:

I do have Crashplan ProE running. It started at 1900 and the Windows Backup starts at 2000. I have modified Crashplan not to start until 2300 to see if that helps.

  • Query - copy layout - really need this

    Hello,
is there a way, a workaround, or what so ever to
copy / download a Layout of a Query.
(and then import it ... )
I really need this so please explain me how I could do this!
    thx in advance!
    greetings
    Steven

    Micky,
I already knew how to transport a query itself but my problem
is that there are "layouts" designed (and assigned) to these query.
so when i want to copy or transport a query, i also want to transport/copy the
    layouts that are created...
example: Query Q has 2 layouts assigned to it (L1 and L2)
so now, I want to copy Q > Q2 so that it also has those two layouts included
so if you know a trick to copy a query (with the layouts inside - or a way to assign these layouts afterwards)
    please let me know!!
    thx already for your reaction

  • Microsoft Shadow Copy Service disables itself when trying to run backups.

I am running Vista Business SP2 and Symantec System Recovery 2013 on my Dell Optiplex GX620 Work Station and my Latitude D830 Laptop. My automatic backups constantly fail due to the fact that the Microsoft Shadow Copy Service continually disables itself.
When I go in and manually reset the service to "Manual" where it belongs, the backups work fine. My problem is I can't find out why the Shadow Copy Service continually disables itself. I have found through trial that it has nothing to do with the
antivirus/antimalware program I am running which is Webroot "Secure Anywhere". I have spent many hours with Norton Enterprise Technical Support and they cannot locate the issue within their product. They are certain it is a Microsoft issue. Same
whith the Webroot people. I have not been successful in getting any answers out of Microsoft. I have talked to techs who either want too much money to handle my problem or there are techs who have given me solutions that do not work. I have all but given up
on Microsoft for assistance with this issue. I have read everything I can find in the Knowledge Base, and what has been written here. I still am in a quandry as to what is causing the shadow service to disable. At present I have no automatic backup system.
I am forced to run it manually because of this issue. I consider this a sad senario in this technical climate in which we live. If anyone out there has the slightest idea as to what could be causing my problem please help! I am open to any solution at this
point. Thanks All!  Paul J. Wiekierak ([email protected])

    Hi pwiekier,
Can you find any warnings or errors related to this ?
I suspect this is a third party service conflict issue.I recommend you to perform a clean boot to have a troubleshoot.
Please follow these steps to perform a troubleshoot:
1.Search "Msconfig.exe" from the start menu
    2.Choose "Services" item
3.Choose "Hide all Microsoft services " and choose"Disable all"
    4.Click "OK" and Restart
And then check this service ,if the issue disappeared, it is a  third party service conflict issue.
We can make a further analysis by enabling the third party service with dichotomy to find out  the culprit.
    Best regards
