Do I really need to upgrade my BIOS??

Hello,
First of all thanks for your help.  I have a 865PE Neo2 P Series MS-6728 PCBv2 with the 3.80 BIOS.  I just bought a Hitachi 160GB 8mb cache hard drive.  My hard drive is showing up as 128GB available space after format.  Do I have to upgrade my BIOS to fix this?  I know the 3.A BIOS adds support for drives over 136GB.  I thought support for larger drives came with Windows XP Pro SP1?  I am running Windows XP Pro SP2.  The last time I tried upgrading my BIOS in DOS I had to RMA my mobo.  So you can understand why I am reluctant and trying to cover all bases.  If I have to upgrade my BIOS to 3.A can I do it from within Windows this time?  Is this safer?  Which way has a higher success rate.  I don't have a replacement if I cook this board.
Thanks,
MD

Most importantly, is to try this regedit keys provided by Microsoft to enable Big LBA Mode.
The following conditions are necessary for the correct functioning of 48-bit LBA ATAPI support:
• A computer with a 48-bit LBA-compatible Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) installed.
• A computer with a hard disk that has a capacity of greater than 137 gigabytes (GB).
• You must enable the support in the Windows registry by adding or changing the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters
To enable 48-bit LBA large-disk support in the registry:
1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: EnableBigLba
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0x1
4. Quit Registry Editor.

  • How long will my current ipone4 last?  Do i really need to upgrade?

i dont see what i need to upgrade my iphone.. is a great i4 I just dont see why i need to upgrade when my cell is great on what i need. So l ask how long before i really need to upgrade?

The subject and body of your post says you have an iPhone 4 but your profile says iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 4 can only go as high as 7.1.2. Many app update and many new apps require iOS 8
The 4S to the current 8.1. The 4S  lags some on iOS 8. It could be that the 4S may not get iOS 10.
It is up to you if you want to purchases a new iPhone to get the new features introduced in the newer models

I am using an iBook with iTunes 6 and the Music Store seems to require an upgrade to iTunes 7. Is this really necessary? I'm using OS 10.2.8 and am unable to upgrade iTunes. Is there a workaround?

I was locked out too, and hopping mad!
    But here is a workaround:
(after repeated emails to mac tech support they finally divulged the secret):
Just upgrade to itunes 6.5, which works on system 10.2
    (it worked for me)

No. If you failed to turn off Find my iPhone BEFORE you upgraded to iOS 7, you will need the original Apple ID and password. If you upgraded to iOS 7 you will need this info; there is no way around this. If it is the device passcode you will need to restore your iPhone in order to reset that, which in the end will require your Apple ID and password in order to activate the phone once it is restored.
Why don't you have the original Apple ID? Where did you get the phone?

I wonder if the disk being referred to is actually your iPod which is not plugged in. Maybe something has stuck thinking the iPod should be there.
Try completely removing all the iTunes related programs according to this method.

  • Need help upgrading BIOS - K8N Neo Plat

    HELP!!!
I have bios 1.1 on my K8N Neo Plat.  I have been trying all morning to upgrade my bios to 1.3, but have been unsucessful so far.  Note that I do NOT have any fancy MSI programs installed (I don't like bloat).
Sooooo, I donloaded bios 1.3 from the MSI website.  This is a little zip file.  Then, I tried the following....
    1) Install from an XP boot floppy. -- Flashing the bios appeared to work, but upon reboot, ver 1.1 was still there.
    2) Install from Win98SE boot floppy. -- Same story.  Flash appeared to work, but 1.1 was still present.
For both type of boot floppies, the flash program says that it is currently re-programming the bios, and it exits normally, without any errors.  The filename that I was loading a file called "W7030NMS.130".
    3) Just for giggles, I downloaded bios ver 1.1, and use the "FC" command to be certain that they were different.
    4) I checked my BIOS screens for any hint of BIOS protection, but could not find any.
    5) The readme file that came with the ver 1.3 said to work from the hard drive, but boot floppies do not seem to like NTFS.  So I simply cannot do it this way unless I re-partition and re-format.
    Any ideas???

Try making a boot floppy with this.
Thats Dr DOS Disk For Bios Flashing from http://www.bootdisk.com
It's pure DOS, and will work with any OS.

  • BIOS Update for Tecra A3: Is it Really Needed?

I frequently see a new bios update file from the download site. My Tecra A3 is 2 months old and have no problems so far. Is it really necessary to update the BIOS?
One more thing is that there is no mention about what the latest BIOS update will do to the laptop.

    Hi
If your unit runs properly and if there are no problems, in my opinion, the BIOS update is not necessary to do.
I use Satellite P20 about two years and I didnt make BIOS update till now. I agree with you that without any concrete description it is not easy to make decision about BIOS update.

  • CAUTION : DO NOT USE LIVE UPDATE OR WINFLASH TO UPGRADE THE BIOS!

    Hello,
I've been having trouble with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard a few weeks now.
My system configuration is not heavy at all and consists of
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    AMD64 Venice (E6) 3200+
    2 x 512Mb DDR400 Geil RAM 2.5-2-2-5 in dual channel configuration
    VGA ASUS 9600XT/128/TVD
    SB Audigy Value
    1 x HDD Maxtor 200GB 7200rpm
    1 x DVD-RW Pioneer 107D
    PSU Addtronics 420W (12V 18A)
    2 case fans 12cm
    2 USB devices (Joysticks)
    Here are the facts:
    1. The system was working great from mid-July until mid-September.
    2. I always close down the PSU power when turning off the computer at night (when I turn it off) in order to have come protection over our crappy power service.
    3. One morning, when trying to turn the PC on, I followed the normal procedure I did each time. PSU ON, waiting a few secs, Power button ON.
That morning, the PC did not boot.  The monitor still displayed 'No Signal' but I could hear the fans working.  I was ready to leave for work so I just shut it down to
investigate after work in the afternoon.
    4. To my surpice, and without doing anything at all, when I tried to turn it on that evening it fired up just fine!!!!
    5. A couple of days later, same thing. No boot, no post, no video signal.  This time I had the time so I started investigating:
Checking the D-Bracket at the back it was Red-Red-Red-Green, which I found out from the manual meant 'Initilization of VGA'... I thought my VGA just died,
so I shut down the PC, removed the power, took out the 9600XT and put in an older nVidia Ti4200 VGA I had spare.
    6. The system fired up normally!!!  Ok, I say... The VGA must be the problem.   Let's test it. I installed the 9600XT on another PC and it worked fine!
Oh... So it's not the VGA at fault!
    7. Once again I replaced the Ti4200 back to my prefered 9600XT.  Pushed the power... No good... No post, no boot, no video...
8 Replaced 9600XT with the Ti4200... Everything worked!.... I started to get worried. WHY doen't the ATI card works and the nVidia does ?
Consiracy theory immediately crossed my mind.
    9. I have spend more than a month to find the cause of this.  I posted to this forum for help, but best suggestion was to replace my PSU as not enough.
420W not enough for a bare minimum PC?  I mean.. Come on!?!?!?... I calculated with the proposed PSU calulator what I needed and I would be fine
even with a 350W PSU and 12A on the 12V rail!.  I had 18A... And some recommended to get a PSU with 30A on 12V !!!!!
That means that I had to spend another 150Euros to get a new PSU while it was not needed!??!  In brief.. yes.
The problem was elsewhere as I found out.
Searching and reading in this forum I found out that a lot of people have the same problem as I did.  Most of them indeed had weak PSUs and needed
more power.  But there were a few that should be fine.
What I found common to all those cases was that there was either an ATI Radeon VGA or an nVidia 6800 involved!
And in almost all the cases the user did a bios upgrade just before the problem started.
Well, that it!... the BIOS upgrade.  I tried to remember and finally did, that I started having these problems after I used the LiveUpdate function to update
the BIOS of the motherboard to 1.9 and once again to 1.b.   But both times I did it from within windows using the winflash utility and the default options.
It seems that the default options did not flash the whole bios.  They left out the boot section.  As a result the system booted ok with the nVidia Ti4200,
an older generation card, but NOT with the ATI 9600XT which was newer generation.
What I did is to reflash the bios using a startup floppy and following the instructions found here : https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=86257.0
After the setup boots etc, I powered down the PC, replaced once again the Ti4200 with the required 9600XT and the system power up and booted fine!
It's running rock stable since then (48hrs already), but I have yet to see if the problem will appear again, as it only happened from a cold boot and not
during a restart or anything.  I hope it will be ok.
So, I'm writting this as a warning.
Take caution and do not upgrade your BIOS from within windows. It's better to spend a couple more minutes to prepare a start up floppy and upgrade
from there, that to have problems later.

    George D.

Load your bios off the hardrive. <-------FAIL SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Not true.
File read operation can fail mid-flash. I agree this is safer that running the exe off a floppy, but it is not as safe as flashing from a RAMDrive (as per JayBee), which doesn't rely on a read from any media across any kind of BUS. Plus the RAMDrive needs no such partition on the HD so why bother with the hassle?
Flash from RAMDrive is not fail safe either of course but when run on a PC with a UPS that's about as safe as anyone can get.

  • I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device.

I noticed that Find My iPhone on iCloud hasn't worked since iOS 8 came out. Whenever I try to use it, it always says "All Devices Offline." This is regardless of whether I am in a good Wi-Fi zone or not.  I like to use Find My iPhone to remotely track my battery charging status whenever my phone is charging in a different room. That's been really handy, which is why I really need to get this fixed. No matter what computer I use, the problem is always the same.
My device uses iOS 7. My question is: do I need to upgrade my device? If not, what should I do? I do not wish to upgrade my device, especially considering the bad things I've heard about iOS 8.
    Feedback would be welcome ASAP.

You don't need to update to iOS 8 to use Find My iPhone.  If you haven't already tried, go to Settings>iCloud>Find My iPhone and turn it off, then reset your phone (hold the sleep/wake and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release).  After it restarts, turn Find My iPhone back on and see if it works properly now.

  • Need to upgrade memory in ppc mac mini

Does anyone know of a step by step guide with pictures to installing memory in a ppc mac mini? Need to upgrade to a gig to use some graphics software. Thanks,
    Steve

In sleep mode (STR) the RAM has to be refreshed to
keep the memory content, so the more you got the more
power will be consumed on this.
Having less ram will therefore benefit battery life
    in sleep mode.
This is only of concern to portable users of course, and the additional RAM has barely any impact on power demand whether from mains-power or battery. Some admittedly, but not much. Nor would it be all that easy to tell what drain it caused since there are other variables involved with battery drain rates too, such as ambient temperature.
There is still room for improvement in whatever
algorithm it is that determines when "inactive"
memory is released. Paging frequently happens after
copying large files since all memory is in use and
"recently" so, even if this use is one where the
content is NOT likely to be needed again.
The much hyped idea that "old" inactive memory is
being released when more is needed I find it
difficult to confirm, or paging would not be needed.
Simply caching EVERYTHING does not in my mind count
    as an "intelligent" algorithm..
As much as this may be valid, there is no way the user is able to change the algorithm - it's part of the operating system. As such, the user can really only take such steps as may be possible to improve the working of the system - one significant such step being adding RAM.
This can be cleared up by running "repair
permissions" in DU, since it seems to release much of
the inactive RAM. It would be much better to have a
small utility to do this, though, if making the OS
more intelligent is not an option.
Running disk utility may be an effective method of resolving memory allocations etc, but it then places the onus on the user to monitor the system and manually activate a process. Part of the appeal of MacOS to many people is that it removes much of the onus users of other operating systems feel is placed on them to keep tuning the system - activities which detract from the use of the system.
Ultimately, I have to say that I have never found the need to do anything of that sort. I do use MenuMeters (a very neat little app to place system monitoring tools in the menu bar and which uses barely any CPU overhead to do so) to watch the status of my system, but only as an occasional troubleshooting aid when I'm testing software or experimenting with the system. That is about as far as I go with anything other than using the system. Certainly, I've not found any need to perform the sort of tasks that are often being recommended, and even the systems I run 24/7 remain efficient in operation.
I can say that while my G4 was running off a 5400rpm drive, increasing RAM from 768Mb to 1.5Gb quite dramatically improved performance of both 10.4 and 10.2 but had little benefit in OS9 (all booting from separate drives). The effects were rather less noticeable after swapping out to 7200 drives instead.

  • Please help, need to upgrade from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4 Tiger on imac g3 400 dv

Hello, I would greatly appreciate assistance to upgrade my operating system from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4.10. I have gotten the firmware upgrade installed to 4.1.9. Can anyone tell me what else I need to upgrade to have this computer able to install Tiger 10.4, on an imac g3 400 dv slot loading.....
Right now when I try to install the disc 10.4 using the option key at restart, it wont load the install disc. Any help would be appreciated , thank u in advance!!!!!!!

Hi, thank u for responding, my harddrive is 10 gigs, and my memory ram is only 64 megs, I ordered 2 512 mg from 18004memory.com and it didnt work , the computer said there was a memory issue. So I returned the memory back to 18004 memory.com...... I will neve ruse them again , because on their website they stated its guranteed to work and is compliant with imac 400 dv. They stated they will send me another set from another manufacturer, but to return the memory first.....
I know I meet all the requirements for tiger , except for the ram which apple says I need 256 mg,
But I was referring to any firmaware upgrades or bios upgrades or any of those type of programming upgrades to ready it for tiger, I know I installed the 4.19, and went from os 9.0 to its current 9.22, I think that alone was 5 upgrades. I think I might be missing an upgrade or maybe not. I will run the utility u posted and thank u for that.....
Apple told me that I can installl tiger 10.4.10 on this computer.
The install discs I bought on ebay state imac MAC osx install disc one and there is and install disc 2, it says AHT VERSION 3A127, and dated as produced in the year 2007. it colored grey , but doesnt have the black X like someone else posted it should have
Oh and it does open the files in 9.22, it does mount, and it does have folders,
Thank u for ur help as I progress to ultimately saving this imac....
    many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Upgrading to FF, need to upgrade the glass too... 5D mkiii and 1 lens, or 6D and 2 lenses?

I've been shooting for several years now, and my trusty 40D has been in dire need of an upgrade. I have had some good paying jobs in the last few months and I have some cash to play with. I've just been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out the best course of action.
I recognize that style determines one's needs, but my needs change. Sometimes it's portrait, studio/location... sometimes it's event, action... sometimes low light and long exposure. Increasingly, paid video is becoming part of my workflow.
I waited to see what the 70D would offer, I was impressed with the new AF system, fps, ISO performance, as well as the usefulness of the flip screen/wifi (more than I thought I would have been). The problem is that it's still a crop sensor, and still on the lower end of the "prosumer" line. I try not to let my ego get in the way too much, as I know that an expensive camera doesn't always make for a good photographer. However, after shooting the xxD line for many years (since the 10D), I would like to move up, and I don't know that I have the patience to wait for the 7D mkii.
I started looking at the 6D as the entry full frame option. The price is right, and if you put it together right, you can get the body and a good kit lens for around $2200. The limitations, as far as I can tell, would be AF system (number of points, and virtual lack of cross-type), fps, build quality, lack of headphone jack, single card slot, sync speeds, etc. If you are familiar with this camera, you are familiar with its functional shortcomings, especially when compared to the Nikon counterpart, the D600. However, I have to respect this camera in its sheer photo taking power, and that in some cases it carries better sensor ratings than the 5Dmkiii. The end result will be as good, if not better than the 5Dmkiii, so long as you are able to get the subject in focus and in frame due to the bogus AF system/fps rating. Seemingly, this camera will not do a lot of the work for you, not as much as it's big brother will, anyway.
I had the opportunity to shoot with a 5D mkiii, and I was blown away with every aspect of its layout and functionality. The AF system was stellar, the ISO performance was amazing, the IQ was well beyond anything I am used to. I was also able to use a full stable of L glass along with it, as well, so I could really express the potential of the camera. Every shot I got was in focus. The grouping options worked flawlessly, and I didn't have to focus/recompose as I have gotten so accustomed to. On the video side, I like the headphone jack and greater resistance to moire (supposedly). It felt solid in my hand, fit perfectly, and wasn't too heavy to carry around a 12 hour corporate gig (even with a broken finger). Was pretty stoked on it.
All of this being said, I need to upgrade the body. This much is clear. The limitation is that my lenses aren't up to par. Half of them are EF-S, and the EF lenses I have aren't much worth mentioning (28-135mm IS, 50mm f2.5 compact macro). The big question is, do I spend the money on the 5D for the greatly advanced features and functionality, and suck it up on the lenses for a while? Maybe just get the 24-105 and use that for basically everything? Or should I get the lesser 6D, and play with some classic lens options like the 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, etc? After all, the focus system wont matter if I don't have the lens to capture it anyway.
    What is the better option?
    1. Buy the more functional (expensive) body and maybe one lens to start.
    2. Buy the less functional (cheaper) but equally IQ rated body and a few lenses, or other pro-business expenses?
Common knowledge seems to state that you invest in glass first.
In the past, I have felt limited by my camera's ability to keep up with low light and focus issues. I don't want to voluntarily step into an inferior system.  Conversely, I don't want to get saddled with a pricey body and no glass to use with it.  Are the technology gains in the 5D mkiii worth it if my budget is limited?
Just wondering if anyone has any insight to this dilemma?

Hi jadphoto, thanks for getting back.  I shot film for many years as well.  It gave me a really good foundation for making sure that you do everything as right as possible before hitting the shutter.  Making the change to digital was certainly revolutionary in the way that I was able to approach photography (cost, learning curve, instant gratification).  I was hoping that the move from crop to FF would be liberating and vision-changing, as well.
Not needing a tripod as often would be awesome.  I do some long exposure stuff that will always require it, but I would like to be able to get some sharp, clean, hand-held images when I don't feel like lugging it around.  I was at a music festival recently, and basically all of my night shots were hand-held, or taken with the camera resting on something.  A lot of the shots were unusable because of blur or noise.  The lighting in those scenarios can be tough, and I've read that the 6D and 5D can basically focus in the dark.  Not needing external flash and a tripod would be great.  On the 40D, I don't like to push the ISO above 1250 (defintely the extreme end for that camera, in my opinion).
I was looking at the 24-70 2.8, or the 24-105 4 IS in that range.  The 24-70 has a lot of clout, and I like the lens.  I really like the bokeh/DOF of a 2.8.  However, the 24-105 has a little more reach, and the IS which is nice.  So I don't know that I would want to do double duty in that range, and like everything else, they seem to spread the awesome features around a bit.  I have really enjoyed the 28-135 over the years.  It has a solid build, really good optical results, but it can be a bit long on a crop sensor, so it gets limited indoor use.  I also recently dropped it from about chest high onto the street... while attached to the body... lens down (first time I've ever done something like that).  It slipped out of the tri-pod collar which was not fully secured.  The filter shattered, and I had to convince the barrel to go back into position so it would zoom properly, but everything alse still works fine.  Still sharp with fast AF.  Pretty incredible.  The 50 compact macro can be a lot of fun for still-life/detail/nature stuff, but I rarely take it out for portrait because the AF is loud and slow, and the results are not always spot-on.  Could be user error.  I might need to keep trying it out, but it doesn't get a lot of love in the paid portrait department.  My 50 1.8 had a cheap build too, but would take some pretty awesome photos (sometimes).
I figured the rest of the kit would make sense once I settled on a mid-range.  I have an 11-18 EF-S that I would have to find a replacement for.  The 24mm on a FF was impressively wide, and might require less immediate attention.  Makes me realize the tunnel vision effect of the crop (good when you want it for reach)...  With that being said the 70, 105, and even 135 might need some help reaching on the FF.... and I've always wanted a fancy, beige/white 70-200.  I just don't know what would get the most use yet.  I was able to use a 70-200 2.8, and I loved the cross-room candids I could get when I wasn't all up on people.  A lot of time, they didn't know I was shooting them.  It's just a beast, though.  It's big, and not too discreet, which can serve the ego but can get you in trouble too.  I can imagine that it is a great tool to have when you need it.

  • No sound on K8N Neo after upgrading to BIOS 1.9

    Hi,
I cannot get the internal sound to work through the digital outputs (SPDIF or optical) after upgrading to BIOS 1.9. The analog aoutputs work fine as did the digital prior to upgrading to 1.9 (don't remember exactly but I think I had 1.7 before).
I have connected my speakers (with internal DA converters) with both SPDIF and optical cables.
I have tried every combination of speaker settings and outputs in the Realtek audio manager to no avail.
As a sidenote my other, external, soundcard (M-box MobilePre works fine) connected to my speakers.
The mobo is a K8n Neo (7030) and audio drivers latest Realtek AC97.
    What can I do?

From what you posted the BIOS update caused your sound problem, so you need to either re-flash BIOS 1.9 or go back to the previous one that worked for you.
Read these thread about flashing BIOS:
    1- using WINflash https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=84865.msg606175#msg606175
    2- using DOS https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=84865.msg606175#msg606175
