Do i still need to use my wireless router with Time Capusle?
I thought that by buying a new Time Capsule (TC) for data storage and as my sole wireless hub (saving on plugs and space) i no longer need my old wireless router?
However, it will only work via my old router?
Tried putting my old ethernet cable into the TC (which is in fact slightly smaller than a traditional computer ethernet cable?) , which then routes to an ADSL filter and then my BT phone socket. However, my computer reads the wireless network but the TC tells me that my ethernet cable isn't plugged in properly?
In contrast, when i connect my old router, via a traditional ethernet cable, to the TC it works fine?
Please tell me i don't need both?

It sounds like you have an ADSL Internet connection provided by BT. Unfortunately, the TC does not have a built-in ADSL modem and it will still require one for Internet access. You would then connect the TC by Ethernet to this modem.

Have 5 macs on an ethernet network - some wired and some wireless to a Linksys router. My provider uses static IP and DSL for internet access. I am replacing an existing Linksys router with the Time Capsule. The Static IP settings I have are IP address, Gateway, Mask, primary DNS and secondary DNS. The Airport Utility is not as straight forward as the Linksys setup. There is not a place to list gateway. You enter the static public IP address info on the TCP/IP tab within the Airport Utility. For a static address, use Configure IPv4 = Manually. You use the Router field for the Gateway address.

Using WRT45G wireless router with a pre-existing network?
I am an NYU student, so I am already connected to a pre-existing network. However, I would like to have wireless internet in my room, so I bought the WRT45G router. Is it possible to do this? I don't have an actual, physical modem. There is just an internet jack in my room.
Yes. Simply hook up the Internet port of the WRT to the internet jack. Then plug your computer to a LAN port. Configure your WRT going to http://192.168.1.1/ (default password is "admin" unless you have changed that).
1. Set the router to "Automatic Configuration - DHCP".
2. Save Settings.
That should do it. You should be able to check the Status tab and see that the router got an IP address from your campus network.
For the security of your network and your computer I highly recommend to do the following things as well. Don't forget to save the settings for each page where you make changes.
- change the router password. You can do that on the Administration tab.
- change the SSID to something else than "linksys" on the Wireless tab.
- turn off the SSID broadcast after you have connected your computer for the first time wireless. (Wireless tab)
- turn on wireless security (on the wireless security subtab). Choose WPA2 Personal if possible (i.e. your computer allows it). Else WPA Personal. Choose TKIP or TKIP+AES depending on the setting before. Enter a pre-shared key (a stronger password or passphrase). You must enter the identical key in your computer when you connect the first time.
Without wireless security anyone can use your router and most likely is able to connect to your computer as well. Therefore: use it! -
Using a Wireless Router with an ATT aircard
I have a laptop that connects to the internet using an internal ATT broadband aircard. I would like to connect a router and print server. I want to connect a desktop pc so that it can use my internet service and I would like to print from anywhere in the house. I purchased a wireless g router and a print server not long ago however, when I tried to hook it up I was not able to because I did not have an external DSL modem. Is there any way to connect a router and a print server without an external DSL?

I would like to use this wireless router with WEP so I can access the camera wirelessly (camera only does WEP encryption).
The camera should be the only device allowed to connect to this router wirelessly.
I can dedicate channel 11 so only this wireless router uses it
I know WEP can be cracked but I'm thinking maybe I can setup the router so it doesn't matter, i.e.,
so only the camera can be accessed through this particular router
so my questions are:
1. can I setup the router so only outgoing local LAN http requests are allowed?
2. any other suggestions on router setup that will prevent access to my network?
(using MAC address filtering (for camera mac address only) is worth doing but I guess MAC address can be spoofed so not a complete solution)

I now have internet thru AT&T Uverse with their wireless router.....do I still need to use my Airport Express for my 2 MACS or can I just unplug it?
You can just unplug the express and use the Uverse wireless or ethernet directly to it.

Yes you still need to use your finger to do all of the things that you need to use it for even if you use a wireless keyboard. You are merely adding a larger more robust keyboard to the device. You are not replacing the touch gestures features with the use of an external keyboard.

Do I still need to use the old mobile me backup system for backing up all my data and having it able to get at in case of a crash, or can the icloud reset everything? Because I can not find any structured refrence, as to how it would be done. I am updated to Maverics. Also does the icloud continue if I uninstall the backup to free up space?
MobileMe was discontinued in 2012 and all the data stored on it was deleted, and iCloud can't make backups of Macs.
What I recommend you to make backups is to get an external drive and use Time Machine or an application like Carbon Copy Cloner. With this, you can access to your data everywhere and safely, and then, if you want, use a cloud storage service like CrashPlan. You can keep on using iCloud without backups -

Can I use a wireless router to share a USB broadband connection
Hi - I have an emac or a mac minin which have a USb boradband modem. I use airport from the emac to allow me to connect from an airport enabled powerbook when it is at home.
Rather than getting an airport card for the mac mini, could I use that as the primary conection to the internet (via the USB modem) and then get a wirless router (eg netgear MR814) an I use a wireless router to share the USB broadband connection to the 2 airport enabled macs?
Or do I either:
1) need to get airport for the Mac Mini
or
2) Get a ethernet modem to plug into the wireless router
Any advice appreciated?

Need a new wireless router with switching
I would like to purchase a new wireless router with 4 port switch. I have an Intel iMac with 2 pc's and have spent hours trying to configure my existing Linksys router to work properly and need to make a change. I have not been able to use iChat with Powerbook users and have had other problems as well and have given up...
The recommended router list on the iChat website does not specifically mention wireless routers with 4 port switching...
Does anyone have any suggestions for a router which is easy to use and configure?

If you mean which method of opening the ports should you use for those computers it will be the UPnP setting found in the Adminstarion tab
Log on to the Linksys by typing 192.168.1.1 into a web browser
Type admin as User ID and Password.

I've been using my wireless router to go online for years...
I've been using my wireless router to go online for years with no problems. But every since we moved and changed internet services, I can't go wirless anymore. We went from having DSL through Cavalier to DSL through Verizon at a different home address. The error messages I get say that there is little or no internet connectivity when I have the router connected to the modem. I've tried using the Linksys router installation CD, but it always stops at the point of configuring the router because it says there is no internet connection. I have an external Linksys wireless card and it shows a good signal when it's inserted. The IP address still says http://192.168.1.1. I've tried powering everything on and off numerous times. Is there something else I can do to be wireless again?
Can you get an internet connection if you connect directly to the modem?

I need Help Setting Up Wireless Router WRT54G on NTL
Hi, I've managed to setup a few home wireless networks in my time but I'm having problems with this. My gf's ISP is NTL and it is connected via a cable modem (rather than the set top). I registered my laptop using the installation software and the internet connection is working fine. I attempted to setup the router and I could connect to it, however I could not connect to the internet through the router. Previously with other routers I found an option where you could input the user/pass so that the router was automatically connected to the service, but I could not find this option. Does anyone who has setup this wireless router with an NTL setup / or anyone at all have any idea how I go about setting it all up?

I need to improve the wireless router range of my time capsule. What sort of extender (repeater?) should I be considering? Will it affect my use of the time capsule as a hard drive backup?
In order to insure compatibility, you need to consider an Apple AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme if you are thinking about "extending" or "repeating" the network wirelessly.
It is also possible to extend the network by connecting an AirPort Extreme or Express back to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, which will provide better performance.
If you have a new "tower" model of the Time Capsule, then you would need a new "tower" version of the AirPort Extreme to take full advantage of the capabilities of the Time Capsule.
If you have an earlier "flat" or "square" version of the Time Capsule, then an AirPort Express would be a good match for the capabilities of the Time Capsule.
An "extender" will not affect the operation of your Time Capsule other than allow wireless devices to connect from a greater range at higher speeds.
