Do I use iPhoto 08 for Calendars, books, et al?

Hi guys,
I just now (talk about late to the party) realized that Apple offers services to make calendars, photo books, b-day invites and other stuff.
My question is, do I use iPhoto 08 (don't have it yet) to make these items? If so, are there templates?
I bought iWork08 thinking Pages was the program to do the stuff, but guess I'm wrong.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks guys!
Looks like I'll be buying iLife08 this week.
Can't wait.

  • Using iCloud (for calendar and contacts) AND MobileMe for Keychain

Does anyone who's migrated to iCloud know if it's possible to sync Address Book and Calendar through iCloud and the Keychain through MobileMe (on a separate account)?
    Situation is as follows:
I have two accounts - one MobileMe (which I use today for calendar and contact syncing) and an Apple ID (which I used for iTunes)
I wish to convert the iTunes account to an iCloud account
That leaves me with my un-converted MobileMe which I'd like to continue to use for Keychain syncing until Apple puts that functionality in iCloud or they retire MobileMe.
I guess - the nub of the question is - is it still possible to access the MobileMe preference pane and put in a different account when iCloud is up and syncing?
    Thanks in advance, Jonathan.

    SaltSeaShark,
I've looked at the iDisk and there's no way to do it automatically.  However when you're back at your home iMac, you can copy the files that you find in ~/Library/Keychains onto your iDisk.  Then when you're at your friend's iMac, you can copy the *.keychain files in your iDisk to the ~/Library/Keychain folder on your friend's machine (in the account that you're using).
That way - you can open your keychain locally - although it won't sync backwards and forwards.  An alternative is to use a third-party product such as 1Password - of which there's an iPad app - as well as a web interface (when combined with Dropbox).
    Hope that helps - Jonathan.

How do I format the layout of my pages in an iphoto for a book?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    Open iPhoto.
Select 'Book' from the bottom Toolbar.
Choose a book or other template.
Select your photos and drag them to the template, following the instructions.
Note the 'Options and Prices' button on the left.
When you've filled your book template, save it and submit it online for printing.

  • Using iPhoto for a specific PP task - will it cause any issues?

Since I've started shooting in RAW, I haven't really used iPhoto that much.
My current process is to import using Bridge, open images in Adobe Camera Raw to edit and crop, and then open in PS Elements 6 to do final editing.
However I don't like the crop feature in ACR... And I'm thinking of using iPhoto for cropping.
Here is how I envision the process -
    1. Import via bridge
    2. Open and edit in ACR but do not crop
    3. Open and edit in PSE6 and save as PSD
    4. Run batch process in PSE6 to convert PSDs to JPGs
    5. Import JPGs into iPhoto and crop
    6. Export JPGs as current settings.
The only issue that I think I will have is that iPhoto will convert the images to 72dpi and so I will need to add one more batch step to convert from 72dpi to 240 or 300 dpi.
Are there any issues with this process change?
Will the extra steps degrade the JPGs in any way?
    Thanks!

    1. Import via bridge
    2. Open and edit in ACR but do not crop
    3. Open and edit in PSE6 and save as PSD
    4. Run batch process in PSE6 to convert PSDs to JPGs
I’m not sure you’ll need this step as iPhoto will work with almost all PSDs. A little trial and error will confirm.
    5. Import JPGs into iPhoto and crop
    6. Export JPGs as current settings.
Assuming you imported as PSD then you can export as ‘Kind: JPEG’ and specify the exported dimensions, thereby avoiding your final batch conversion to 300 dpi. (Although this conversion is pretty pointless until you actually go to print a file.)
    A general comment:
It’s a lot of effort to get a crop. Can’t you crop in Elements? Or - if not in Elements - there are lots of little editors out there with no database element that will crop. Even Preview will do this.

  • Using iPhoto for organizing digi scrapbook supplies

I have successfully figured out how to use iPhoto for the above except in one instance. Many digi kits have some elements to use in creating the scrapbook page in Photoshop Elements 6 in png format. It appears in the kit as black on white background so you can see it. But in iPhoto it is just one black box. It doesn't matter if I select the background as black or white. Any ideas how I can put these in and be able to see what they are. Hard to pick something if you don't know what it is.

    Janet:
Those files either are grayscale mode images or have an alpha channel both of which iPhoto doesn't support. Export those file out of iPhoto, and use an image editor to convert them to the RGB color mode or remove the alpha channel. It's more likely they are greyscale.
Maybe an easier way to convert from grayscale to RGB would be to use my Automator workflow Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile.app to covert them. Just drag the problem files onto the application and they will be converted. You can download it from  Toad's Cellar, 2nd from top.

  • I have used IPhoto for 3 years.  Now I cannot print a photo because I get the message "There were no themes located. Until at least one theme has been installed, this feature will be unavailable.

I have been using IPhoto for three years.  Now I cannot print a photo because I get this message:  "There were no themes located.  Until at least one theme has been installed, this feature will be unavailable."

You need to reinstall iPhoto.  To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the:
    HD/Library/Receipts folder (10.5 and earlier)
    or from the /var/db/receipts/  folder (10.6) .
or from the /private/var/db/receipts folder (10.7 or later)
Then install iPhoto from the source it came from originally.

  • Using iPhoto create a book. X-lg 100 pgs. Uploading for 4.5 hrs. Is this normal?

Using iPhoto 08 I created an extra large photo book. The upload process began around 5pm. It is now close to 10pm. Is this normal?

Uploading speed is based on your internet connection upload speed. Most all residential broadband accounts have a much slower upload speed then the download speed. Most of the time what you are uploading is a Request to either Download something or to Load a Web Page. Both take very little bandwidth. When you are uploading tons of photos, and depending on how large each photo file is ( The file Size), the upload can take several hours.
    This is completely normal.

  • Have been using iPhoto for weeks and had it open just an hour ago and when I tried to open again I got a message that I had to upgrade in or to see my library??? after trying to upgrade still getting message. What the heck is going on

Cannot open iphoto library, getting a message staing I have to upgrade to see my library which I have done four times with no results.  I just had iphoto opened an hour before without a problem and have been using it for weeks before today.  Any ideas as to what is going on?

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
    Happy New Year

  • Using iPhoto for presentation

    Hi all,
I want to be able to show photos of art work from my iPhoto in a presentation. People tell me I need to buy Power Point but do I really need to? I want to use my computer to plug into what ever type of projection system is available and manually move from one photo to another. No music, no fancy Ken Burns type effects. I'm not even sure what type of projection connection is standard in the industry. Would I need Power Point to connect to most US University projection systems or can I just sent up a folder in iPhoto and manually move from photo to photo. Just what the ehck will I be plugging into that gets me from my computer to a projection screen in a lecture hall anyway?
    thanks in advance

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No you don't need PowerPoint. My wife teaches at the local college and uses iPhoto as her presentation application.
You'll need to set up an iPhoto album for the presentation. If you have a laptop that includes the apple remote you can use it to advance, pause and go back.
Here's how I have it set up for her:
1 - select the album with your slides and click on the Play button at the bottom.
2 - in the Settings pane put in 600 seconds. This will let you discuss the slide for up to 10 minutes without the slideshow automatically advancing. Uncheck all of the checkboxes (except the "show title" if you want that option). Set your transition to the style and speed that you want.
3 - In the music section uncheck the Play music checkbox.
4 - save the settings via the Save button.
Now you can start the slideshow by selecting the album and Option-click on the Play button. That will bypass the settings window and go directly to the slideshow. With the Apple remote the play button will start the slideshow once the album has been selected.
We found that we had to be connected to the digital projector with it turned on before we booted up the laptop. Then in the Monitors preferences pane select the Arrangements section (it only shows up if you're connected to a second monitor or digital projector) to complete your setup. That may vary depending on the projector but if we were already booted before connecting the laptop the projector would not be recognized.
The first time we got a message window saying the resolution of the screen should be set to 640 x 480. However, later on we used a higher resolution and it worked OK and looked better.
If you don't have an Apple remote then you can use the arrow keys to operate the slideshow.
We use the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook Pro to connect to the projector. Depending on the age of your iBook you'll have a VGA or mini VGA port. The mini came with iBooks starting in May, 2002. You'll have to determine what type of connection the projector uses. Ours was a VGA. Then you'll need mini-VGA to VGA adaptor if yours is a later iBook.
We do have PowerPoint and use it to make the slides but export them to iPhoto for the lectures. So if you have your slides/photos and don't need to have any text with them, just put them in an album and off you go. You can always make title slides with a text editor, do a Print to PDF/Send PDF to iPhoto to get the slide into iPhoto as a jpg file.
I definitely would do a trial run before the lecture to make sure you have the correct connectors, etc. My wife's first night in class was somewhat of a disaster even though we went in a couple of days before and ran it. Some equipment had changed and she's not very technically adept.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Import jpgs or psd into iphoto for calendar

I have 12 psd files. I want to make them into a calendar using iPhoto's capability. do I need to "save as" jpg in Photoshop first and import the jpgs into iPhoto?

No. iPhoto can handle psd files as well as jpgs, tiff, pngs and some others.
    FWIW:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Using iPhoto to make books with NetBoot on an apple server in computer la

I teach an artist book course at NKU. We have an intel imac lab that serves up the software over a NetBoot system on the network from an xServe. We are using iPhoto to make our books. Our problem is that students cannot save their books to work on for more than one class period because they cannot write back to the server and each time the computer restarts, a pristine set of software is loaded onto each computer. I discovered there is no way to save a book. We can drag the library off and save it but we cannot do that with the book which makes is virtually impossible for my students to do their assignment. In iMovie, you can save your project onto an external drive. With Keynote, you can save your project onto an external drive, but with iPhoto, you cannot save your book onto an external drive to complete as time permits. Do you have any help for me? Barbara Houghton, Professor of Art, Northern Kentucky University [email protected]
iMac Intel Mac OS X (10.4.8) netBoot serves programs onto lab computers over the network

    Barbara:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What if the student has a USB flash drive with his library folder on it. Could he run that library with the iPhoto application that's on the server? Each student would have to import the photos from the main library to his flash library and run it from there. To get iPhoto to switch libraries you launch it with the Option key depressed and, when asked, navigate to the library you want to use and select it. As long as the libraries don't have many, many photos a 1 or 2 G flash drive would work. If a student had their own portable FW or USB hard drive they could use that also. Unfortunately that involves additional hardware. Might not be that big an issue for today's students as they are much more technologically advanced that we are in so many ways.
Not familiar with servers that's the only way I can think of for each student to have their own library, pictures and keep it for him/herself. Good luck.

  • Using iPhoto for organizing and another program for editing

I really like iPhoto for organizing my photos. The tags/comments along with smart albums are amazing. The problem is that I would like to edit the photos externally to iPhoto. I am wondering if there is a way to edit your photos externally but still use iPhoto to organize them? Would iPhoto still be able to allow the external program to edit the photo nondestructively?
I am looking to use Gimp (using X11) to edit my photos.
    Thanks for any help.

    bauer172:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There is a caveat to using a 3rd party editor from within iPhoto. If Gimp is capable of creating layered files and/or changes the extension to its own after extensive editing you must take some precautions so as not to lose those edits.
Any time the 3rd party editor requires a change of extension due to the editing you must either flatten the image and/or force a save as a jpg with the same original file name OR do a Save As to the desktop and import that file as a new one. Otherwise you run the chance of saving the edited file and not have iPhoto know it exists.

  • DO NOT USE IPHOTO FOR ANY IMPORTANT OR PROFESSIONAL WORK

I am a freelance photographer in NYC and was using iphoto to organize and view my photos. After my last import, Iphoto not only created new folders for my work but also went in and replace 2 of my existing folders of work. I tried everything from backing up and the rebuilding the library to search with spotlight for my pictures. the thumbnails are still in the cache but all of the orginals are gone and i have many unhappy clients. So i am left to using my unfriendly camera import software, but at least i would lose my information.
