Do I want an apple tv
For a few years I have been buying tv shows which we either watch on our computer or put on my husbands ipod and then hook to the tv.
What a pain in the rear!
Anyhow.... on my computer for the last 9 months or so I can't even watch tv shows on the computer
as they now stutter and play choppy.
I have searched these forums and the internet to no avail.
If I was to buy an AppleTV would that solve the hassle of the ipod situation???

Hi Laura,
I got an Apple TV a few months ago and it plays extremely well most of the time. My wife an I have been watching the Lost series (purchased directly from iTunes on the ATV) on a 40" LCD Samsung TV and the quality is excellent. The picture looks near HD quality to me with the standard download. It does take about 20 hours to download a full season with our 1 Mb/sec Internet connection and ties up the network while in progress, but it's worth it.
However, I think the device requires some patience. Between it seeming to have a mind of it's own sometimes and no single complete source for documentation that I've been able to find, it can be frustrating to get it working to your tastes.
For example, my ATV is set up to wireless connect to my MacBook so I can sync content on the computer with the ATV. I don't know if its my lack of understanding of the settings, or something I inadvertently do, or network issues, or ATV software issues, or iTunes issues, but mysterious things happen from time to time. For example, there could be 20 Gig of content on the ATV and the next minute it's gone. The next minute it's syncing with iTunes again.
Having the content disappear was a real problem until I learned on the forums (after a lot of digging) that in iTunes my ATV should be set to Custom Sync and unchecked "Show only the synced items." Not obvious but important because I have 200 GB of content and my ATV has 40 GB. Those setting allow me to select and view music and video whether it's on the ATV or on my computer. From the ATV it's just content to be selected, played, and enjoyed.
Overall I really like it now that I seem to have climbed the learning curve. If you get one it may work for you just the way you want right out of the box. But I would also have the expectation that it may take some time and patience to fine tune to your liking. Personally, I find it shameful that Apple does not provide comprehensive documentation. But they seem to live in the fantasy that their stuff is always easy and intuitive to use. I don't find that to be the case.

though I have to say I think it's more sensible if the ID is another address, both for security reasons (so people don't know what the login is) and as a contact address from Apple if the account were to stop working and they needed to contact you. So personally I would to to System Preferences, enter the GMail address which is an ID, and then choose a nerw @icloud.com address.
If she has her own iCloud account she will need either her own computer or her own user account on your Mac to be able to make use of it. You should note that under Apple's terms of use Apple IDs are only available to children of 13 and over.
As to purchasing apps, this is nothing to do with iCloud: it's iTunes, and the login can be different. So you can all sign into the same iTunes account but have different iCloud accounts. Or she can have her own iTunes account if she is of suitable age (credit card needed for purchasing apps).
If you have other children you should be aware that any one Mac or device can create only three iCloud accounts - this is tied to the serial number, not the user account, and once reached cannot be bypassed. You can of course sign into an iCloud account created on another device. -

Someone used my email address to create an Apple ID. I logged in to appleid.apple.com and I changed the password because it is freaking me out. I want to report it to Apple but dont know how to go about it. I want the Apple ID deleted. How do I go about that? Is there also a way to ensure that the email address wont be used again by this person to create another Apple ID?
This is compounded actually by a Gmail issue. I have had this email address for ages, since the start of the beta. But lately in the last year or so, I am getting mail that seems to be intended for other people but it is using my email address. All iPhones/iPods are signed to the same appleID. I have tried to log my iPods game centre account in but only wants the apple ID, yet when I sign the apple ID in it signs my iPod into my iPhones game centre account which is the problem!!!! My iPhones game centre is different to my iPods but I don't want that account on my iPod as already have one on my iPod, but it won't log me in. I know the username and password for them both but every time I want to sign in it asks me for my apple ID and signs me in to my iPhones account.

My apps are not updating as I have no longer access to my eariler apple Id and now I am using a new apple Id which is allowing to download apps but while updating those apps my iPod wants eariler apple Id password to update what should I do ?

Those apps are forever tied to the Apple ID they were purchased under. You can either delete them and re-purchase them, or you can go to Manage your Apple ID and reset the password on the old Apple ID so you can use it to update your apps: Apple - My Apple ID
If you decide to continue to use them under the old ID password, I would suggest that when you reset that password, you change it to be the same password as the one you are currently using. That way when apps need to be updated you will only need to know one password and you won't have to be concerned with which Apple ID is displaying.

Help: do i really want an Apple TV or a Mac Mini?

I have an iMac and Airport Extreme base station upstairs in the den. Downstairs in the rec room I have a 46" LCD HDTV.
I'd like three things.
1. I'd like to rent movies from iTMS (can't in Canada); and buy/rent American TV shows from iTMS (can't in Canada)
2. I'd like to be able to watch video files in the rec room that are on my iMac. (Currently I burn them to a DVD and watch them on my DIVX-capable DVD player, but the image quality ain't great.)
3. I'd like to be able to browse the web from my rec room
Trying to decide if I want an Apple TV or something else (like a Mac Mini). Here's my thinking:
Apple TV, PROs: awesome interface, HDMI out, can stream video files from my iMac or a hard drive on my Airport Extreme base station.
Apple TV, CONs: no movie rentals in Canada yet, no American TV shows in iTunes store in Canada yet, have to convert DIVX files to Apple TV compatible format, cannot browse the web with it
Mac Mini, PROs: can use Front Row to watch video files, can use Safari to browse the web in my rec room
Mac Mini, CONs: more expensive, no HDTV and 5.1 audio out
So my questions are:
Q1. is there any chance that Apple TV will provide me with access to the Safari web browser any time soon?
Q2. is the video output on a Mac Mini to my 46" LCD good enough; or is it crap compared to the HDMI out on Apple TV?
Q3. will iTunes store sell America TV shows in Canada soon?
Q4. will iTunes store rent movies in Canada soon?
Q5. will Apple TV support DIVX files soon?
Q6. if I buy an Apple TV will I regret getting the 40Gig version?
Q7. if I buy an Apple TV will I regret it because there's going to be a new PVR version of Apple TV next year?

1) Probably not. This can be done but you'd have to hack it which isn't suggested.
2) It's the same output. The only difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI carries audio as well. A mini outputting at 1920*1080 will look as good as an ATV outputting over HDMI.
3 + 4) Who knows. My guess - unlikely.
5) Not likely. You'll need to pick up something such as Visual Hub to convert files to ATV format. On the other hand, a mini can play these files already.
6) That depends on how often your computer is on. In my case I own the 40 and don't mind it a bit - my mac mini is always on so it can stream anything from my mini to my Apple TV over my network. Streaming movies takes about five seconds to get started but after that I've had no trouble.
7) That's a possibility given that they've submitted patents for an idea such as that - but remember many patents never turn into anything.
Basically I think the mini vs. Apple TV comes down to $$$ and how badly you want to rent HD movies. A mini (via Front Row) can do anything an Apple TV can do plus a whole lot more (play many more formats, higher resolutions, etc.). The only thing it can't do is rent HD movies. I would have sprung for another mini if I could have afforded it. -

Yes, if she has your Apple ID & Password, she can see any messages that are sent to you as iMessages using another iOS device.

I really want my Apple TV, iPad and iPhone to sort them in date taken like in iPhoto on my iMac. How do I do that? Sorting on date modified seems so stupid to me, why would anyone need this? Date taken gives a timeline in your event.

If it's an AppleTV 1 (silver) it has HDMI and component.
Black AppleTVs only have HDMI.
The copy protection lobby insist that AppleTV uses HDCP copy protection for protected media and you are unlikely to find a legitimate consumer device that can convert video from HDMI to an analogue format to distribute to other TVs, VCRs, DVD recorders etc.

How do i update all our iPhones to same Apple ID as we have for iCloud? when we started we have an Apple ID tied to an old email account- then i got a ME account- then iCloud and its tied to ME account- how do we get iTunes match and all our paynet etc tied to APPLE ID that uses ME mail account? eventually i want to get rid of the old email and everything associated with it- so want APPLE stuff all using same APPLE ID.
Apple does not allow merging of accounts, so two IDs on the same iCloud account would be a merger.
You can create one account and both use it but that also defeats the purpose of two accounts. Good luck with you accounts...and remember, apps and tunes bought with an account are tied to that account so you should keep straight what apps are tied to which account.
