Do iMacs generate a lot of heat?

Do iMacs generate a lot of heat? Being summer, I got the rest of the house cool, while my bedroom with the iMac in it roasts.

Jesse,
The processor gets quite warm, as well as the hard disk sometimes. I can comment on the G5 iMac, but I notice you have a G4...I'm not certain the differences, but I'm sure that much of the following info will apply to both:
I'd first do a quick forum search on heat issues, and you'll find several threads regarding the issue. In general, the hotter your room is, the more difficulty your iMac will have in dissipating the heat - the cooler the area, the less your fans have to blast in order to accomplish this.
I'd recommend downloading a program such as X-Resource Graph that will tell you both your processor and hard drive temperatures, as well as your fan speeds. Normal speeds seem to be (from reading the forum here) as follows:
CPU fan = 1500 rpm
Hard Drive = 2300 rpm
System = 1700 rpm
And there is really no such thing as normal CPU temp and hard drive temp (I can't remember offhand what the max temps are according to Apple)...My CPU hovers around 120-130 and my hard drive around 100 or so.
I have never seen my fan speeds and CPU/ hard drive temps go much above this. I suspect that if your bedroom is roasting as you say, you will probably get higher results. I'd be interested to know. Would you post your info here, please?
Arguably, the iMac's heat dissipation system is built to handle those sort of things, and you probably shouldn't be too worried about it (I'd be more worried about sweating my butt off while I'm sleeping!).
Cheers!
Jason

  • I have an HP I7 QuadCore laptop that generates a lot of heat. How are the I7 PowerBooks at generating/dissipating heat?

Helping my niece get a laptop for college.... I have an HP I7 QuadCore laptop that generates a scary lot of heat. How are the I7 PowerBooks at generating/dissipating heat? Have people been having problems?

As John indicates, the last PowerBook was discontinued in April 2006 and even that model could do very little in today's web-based computing environment.
You can ask in the MacBook Pro forums here:
    MacBook Pro
However, no matter where you ask there are two common factors in heating:
    --The programs/tasks you are doing
--The fact that no laptop has room for big fans means it will always run hotter doing the same tasks than will a desktop computer with big fans. Few laptops are good gaming platforms as a result.

  • How to check user/session generating a lot of archivelogs?

    Hi,
On a 10g database, How do i look for the user/session that is generating a lot of archivelogs?
    thanks in advance,

For currently connected sessions, you could query V$SESSTAT (joining to V$STATNAME). Thus,
    select s.sid, s.value
    from v$sesstat s, v$statname n
    where s.statistic#=n.statistic#
    and n.name = 'redo size'
    order by 2
    /However, there are a few complications :
    1. Persistent Sessions will show up with very high statistics, simply because they haven't disconnected. Many applications maintain Persistent Sessions for either of
    a. Monitoring and Running User Submitted or ScheduleD Jobs (eg in Oracle EBusiness Suite or Peoplesoft)
    b. Connection Pooling
    2. Sessions that have already disconnected will not appear in your report.
Therefore, you'd have to "sample" sessions frequently and find the incremental redo size. Then, another complication hits you :
    c. Oracle reuses Session IDs. Once a session disconnects, another connecting session may get the same SID. It wouldn't get the same SERIAL# immediately so you might want to use a combination of SID+SERIAL# from V$SESSION as your key (you'd have to add V$SESSION into your monitoring query) Even then, I wouldn't guarantee that the pair wouldn't repeat after some time, particularly with instance restarts.
You'd be better of using AUDSID from V$SESSION as that value is incremented (and not reused) by session auditing.

  • Operations Manager 2012 Generates a lot of Alerts

    Hello,
Please kindly help.....I deployed Operations Manager 2012 and configured the Email Notifications. Now OpsMgr is generating a lot of Email alerts.......
How can i reduce on the alerts and Email noise and only tune for the required Email notifications.
OpsMgr is currently monitoring Active Directory,Exchange,SharePoint,SQL,Lync,IIS,and other components of System Center.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Ronald.

    Hi Ronald,
    You got two option.
    1) Fine tune the subscription
    2) Fine tune each and every rule and monitor
Tuning subscription is easy and quick solution to stop recieveing emails. Try to narrow down subscription to very critical monitor and rules. You may not be interested in recieving emails for some service monitor and rules, you may remove them from your
    subscription list.
Creating overrides to tune monitor and rules is lengthy process as you have to create override for each rule and monitor. I will suggest; first find out most noisy rules & monitor and fine tune them.
Top 20 Alerts in an Operational Database, by Alert Count
SELECT TOP 20 SUM(1) AS AlertCount, AlertStringName, AlertStringDescription, MonitoringRuleId, Name
    FROM Alertview WITH (NOLOCK)
    WHERE TimeRaised is not NULL
GROUP BY AlertStringName, AlertStringDescription, MonitoringRuleId, Name
    ORDER BY AlertCount DESC

  • Material Return/Scrap Material from production generate inspection lot

    Hi experts,
I would like to confirg the following:
When material return or scrapped material return from production(mvnt type 262), system is required to generate inspection lot.
How can I config this scenario?
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Daniel

The inspection lot origin '05' is assigned to movement type '262'.
(You can check this in update control at transaction OMJJ.)
So you have to activate the inspection type '05' or new one.
But you should be 'careful' because an inspection lot will be create even if other movement like '501'.
    Regards

  • Firefox generates a lot of webtraffic. What may be wrong?

My Firefox regularly generates a lot of web-traffic. I don't think it is updates. I can't really say more as I have no clue what may be the reason. Thanks.

  • My imac 21.5" 2010 model heats up in the top left corner (backside) when iphoto is on ad trying to generate thumbnails? Can anyone help as to why this is. It has been serviced and passed all heating tests? Thanks in advance

I just had my iMac sent away for repair as it kept heating up to the point where you could not touch the top left corner of the machine. It really only heats up when i open iPhoto and it is generating thumbnails for all the events. (Some reason it has lost all the thumbnails).
The Mac came back yesterday and they replaced the fans and cleaned out the machine and it has passed all heating tests.

As user Seventy one recommended above, the "iStatPro" Free software is very useful in determining just how hot your internal hardware components are getting.  You could post some of the temp readings from it here so we can comment on them.

  • Goods Receipt generates inspection lot using inspection type 08

    Hi,
I have two plants A and B. I have set up my materials with an 08 inspection type plant B. Material transfers from plant A and B generate an inspection lot using inspection type 08 and inspection lot origin 08. This works perfectly.
However if I use a stock transfer between two storage locations within 1 plant, using stock transfer order, inspection lot is generated using inspection type 08 when GR is performed.
Is there a link between 08 inspection type and 101 movement
    Regards

Yes ,101 & 08 are associated with each other for stock transfer order that is only when receipt indicator is "X" and mvt indicator is prchase order.
If you do not want this to haapen then
copy mvt type 101 as Z01 & for this mvt type deactivate QM in
    QCC3->inspection lot creation->Inspect for goods mvt->Deactivate Quality Inspection for a Movement Type>Z01-->deactivate
Use this mvt type when you are tranferring material from storage location to storage Location.
This will not create any inspection lot.

  • Safari 6.1 on iMac running 10.8.5 heating

    Hello all,
since istalled on my iMac running 10.8.5, safari 6.1 is sending fire alerts to the the fans which keep blowing at a very noisy speed. Just have to quit safari for some 30 minutes to get the iMac back to normal. Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Allan,
Thanks for your attention in trying to help me, but NO, I have only one extention in Safari which is 'Ad Block'.
However, I managed to find a fix !
I elected to give my iMac it's first nite in three year with a complete shut down. Next morning, rather difficult wake up, so Itried to open it in Safe mode... took almost 20 minutes, but finally woke up. Then repaired permissions, and restarted it the normal way. Here again, some 10 minutes to be operationall, but since, no more heating and therfeore no fans running like Formula 1. So far so good.

  • Imac G3 smells toxic over heating shuts down

I have an i-mac G3 power Pc limited edition from summer 2001 700mhz. Last summer it kept shutting down in the heat so I put a fan over it and its been fine until last week. I noticed a toxic smell in the room and it is very slow. Im guessing the fans gone, can I repair it myself. or does anyone know a chepa place in LONDON? thanks

also, the "lethality" of these Macs is completely overrated. Unless you're working around the CRT, you'll be fine. The motherboard is on the bottom of the machine and you'll be nowhere near the CRT if you mess with that. However, your problem sounds CRT related. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, I'd stay away from the CRT (which I believe you have to open the top of the imac to access it. you can't get to it through the bottom).

  • Generate Inspection lot operation when needed

    Hi
We are using inspection lots to record supplier results for certain raw materials.
We now need to include our own test results to these inspection lots.
To accomplish this we’re thinking of using the same inspection plan with a 2nd operation.
This will enable us to generate one inspection lot per GR while recording two types of results (i.e. Op1 = Supplier, Op2 = Own).
The inspection lot will always have results from Supplier, but we might only internally test every 10th delivery (GR).
Is it possible to generate the 2nd operation (i.e. Own results) when needed?
    Or any other elegant approach/process?
    Thanks

    Hi Werner
Not is possible add more results in a inspection lot when you made the usage decision.
For this case, you can use the inspection class 89 (Other Inspection) for manually generation inspection lot when you need to register your own results.
For this inspection class 89 you need an inspection plan with another usage (Usage 3). In this inspection plan you can to use your own test.
    Regards.
    Henry.

  • IMac is lagging because of heat?

I'm having some trouble with my mid 2010 iMac. Lately, every time I play any game (like Minecraft or Elder Scrolls Online) the game starts to lag after playing for around half an hour (before that moment the game runs fine). By the time the game starts to lag, my iMac has become as hot as a chili pepper so I think that's the cause of my problems. Could it be that my iMac is full of performance-draining dust inside? I've never cleaned it and I've owned it since February '11.

It's more likely that both the lag AND the heat are effects of something else. Possibly the spec of your iMac is not up to the intense graphics demands of the games (I don't play games so I've no idea if these are playable given your machine), or you've got other things running at the same time and the total load on your CPU is just too much.
I'd suggest you first make sure nothing else is running while you're playing, and second run Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/Acitivity Monitor.app) when you notice the lag and see whose eating up all the %CPU time and RAM.
