Do iphone apps require access to my network?

I juat bought a new android phone.  All of the apps that I have tried to load from the google play store require access to my network and contact lists that they do not need to run the app.  I still have time to switch carriers and change to an iphone.  Are iphone apps less intrusive?

Some apps require Internet access, many do not. Without knowing what apps you would wish to run, there's no way we can say with certainty whether the situation you'd encounter on an iPhone would be significantly different, though Apple enforces much higher levels of restriction on when and how an app can access your personal data such as contacts info.
You may be able to get more information and opinions if you ask in the iPhone forum rather than here in the iTunes for Mac forum. The more specific you can be regarding the apps, or at least the type of apps, you'd be interested in, the more detailed an answer you'll be likely to get.
Regards.

  • IPhone 3GS cannot access to 3G network after upgrading to OS 5

My iPhone 3GS cannot access the 3G network after upgrading to OS5. I have checked with my operator and shows that their 3G network is working fine. Only cannot access through the phone. When I enable 3G, there will be no service for my phone. Wifi is working fine.
Any idea how to resolve this?

Thanks, I will try this method. After restore and syn, will it automatically upgrade back to OS5?
No. If you have 5.0.1, then you will get 5.0.1 back. Restoring should still fix it though. I would prefer to have you back up to iCloud, because there are many known issues/errors when trying to restore via iTunes on iOS 5 or later.

  • Why does iPhone backup require access to the Internet?

While syncing my iPhone, iTunes first performed a backup. My firewall reported that the backup phase of the sync required access to the Internet. Why would the backup require access to the internet unless it was sending some information?
This makes me a bit worried that some of my personal data is being sent to Apple without my permission.

Whenever your phone is synced and iTunes recognizes there are new crash reports, a program called MDCrashReportTool sends these reports to Apple. Apple then funnels the reports to the correct app developer's iTunes Connect account. No personal information is transmitted.
If this bothers you(it shouldn't), you can turn off the sending of the crash reports:
Right-click on the phone in iTunes, and click "Reset Warnings." The next time you sync, itunes will ask if you want to send the reports. Un-check the "Do not ask me again" option, hit "Don't Send," and you're good to go.

  • Searching for an app to access companies storage network while mobile

My companies IT department is looking for an app to access our share drive.
But the data in our I drive is physically stored on a SAN (storage area network) array, goes through iSCSI Interface to a server, the server shares it out to Enterprise users, and controls the security with Windows account credential.  Most importantly is that everything in the corp. network is protected under a business class firewall, we published out websites and OWA (Outlook Web Access) service to the Internet, but we do not publish our share drive to the Internet, because it is very dangerous.
are there any solutions to access these files while mobile rather than just through a desktop?

If you are in side the building & using wifi, you could look into:

  • VNC Mocha Lite, DynDNSm, iPhone setup for accessing Mac outside network

Not sure if this will help but it took some trial and error to get right. This is to help those who want to use the Mocha VNC program to remotely access their Mac from outside their own network. Hope it helps.
    1. First you need to get a domain name (free) from www.dyndns.org. Simply go there and sign up for a free account and pick your domain name (such as joeblow.homeip.net)
    2. Goto the Mac you want to remotely control. In System Prefs goto the "Sharing" menu. Make sure to click on the "Screen Sharing" option (no need for Remote Login/Mgmt, etc). Then click on "Computer Settings...". Check on the second option "VNC viewers may control screen with password:" Then type in a password and hit "Okay"
    3. Open Airport Utility
    4. First you need to ensure the Mac retains a static IP address within your network if you access the network wirelessly. Your router may change it from time to time, so just to be sure, make it static. You do this by selecting your router then 'Manual Setup'.
    5. Click on the "Internet" option at the top of the setup dialog box, then select the "DHCP" tab.
    6. In the "DHCP Reservations", hit the "+" sign below.
    7. Type in the description, for me this is simply the name of the Mac we are setting up, you can name this whatever you like.
    8. Be sure the "MAC Address" is checked and hit "Continue".
    9. Type in the MAC address, you can get this from the "Network Utility" utility found in the Applications/Utility folder and in the dropdown box be sure you select "en1". You do not have to type in the ":", it will automatically be done. Then in the "IPv4 Address" box type in the IP address you want to set as static for the Mac. For me, i simply used the address my router had currently given it, 10.0.1.197, but it can be 10.0.1.19x. for most who aren't connecting to more than 10 computers this won't be a problem. Hit "Done", you have not made the IP address for the Mac static.
    10. Now you have to 'port forward' a port on the router so that when a call is made from outside the network on a certain port, it is forwarded to this Mac. Click the "Advanced" icon at the top of the Airport Utility application. Then click the "Port Mapping" tab.
    11. click the "+" button below.
    12. In the first two boxes, type in "5900" (if you add other Macs, make it 5901, 5902, etc, etc, each Mac must have a unique "Public" UDP and TCP port). Then in the private IP address type in the IP address you just reserved for the Mac. In the two bottom "Private" port text boxes type in "5900" (this is the same for ALL Macs...for whatever reason, on the Mac, VNC only seemed to work on port 5900). When done, hit 'continue'.
    13. Type in a name for this port mapping - I used "VNC - {name of computer}" and then hit "Done"
    14. Click the "Update" button at the bottom right of the Airport Utility app to update your router with these new settings. That's all you need for the Mac.
    15. After installing VNC Mocha Lite on your iPhone. Open up the app and hit the "Menu" button, the "Edit Connections". Select one of the empty 6 connections.
    16. In the "VNC Server IP Address" type the dyndns.org name you reserved "joeblow.homeip.net".
    17. In the "VNC Server Port" box type 5900 (or 5901, 5902 etc, for subsquent computers)
    18. In the "VNC Password" box type in the password you created in step 2 above
    19. Give it a name in the next text box, whatever you like
    20. Be sure the Mac OS X server is "On" as well as all the other options.
    21. That's it, you should be set.
    Hopefully this helps others.

Thanks a million, Dave and John, for the very helpful responses and suggestions. I now understand that with OS X 10.5.2 there is a "built-in" VNC-like server, thus there is no need to run Vine Server.app; I also checked, it is NOT in the Login list (under Accounts), hence does not automatically load in the background.
    One puzzlement and one question:
The Puzzlement: the Password necessary for connection seems to be my regular password to log in to my Mac as a user. Whatever password I set under System Preferences>Sharing>ScreenSharing>Computer Settings>Password seems to have absolutely no influence on my being able to login with my iPhone with the (stored on the iPhone) "regular" password. that is to say, no matter what password I set on the MAC, I am not being asked and the iPhone connects and displays the screen. Go figure! ???
The Question: how do I do a port forward on the Airport Extreme BaseStation?
Using the Airport Utility.app (vers. 7.3.2)>Manual Setup>Advanced tab>PortMapping tab I click the plus button and then I am at a loss what Service to choose (Personal File Sharing, I assume?) and what numbers/digits I need to fill into these fields. Any advice appreciated.
    I will follow-up on the dyndns.org advice.
    Hope that you can help.
    Thanks and cheers,
    Veit

  • Iphone apps requires another itunes account for updates

    Hi.
    Lets get right into it.
I have my own account but when i try to update an app it asks for another guys account that i dont know! :O
When i purchase an app from the appstore with MY account its completly fine and the app installs. But when there comes an update for the app, and i press the update button I have to login to another account that i dont have a clue what the password is for that account. This happens to both free apps and purchased ones. :O So now im sitting here with an iphone packed with outdated apps...
    please help! :O

Yes I have... One of my friends gave me some music. But we didnt sync. We just dragged and dropped the music onto the iphone.
    BINGO!!!
And the iTunes account you are being prompted for is not your friend's iTunes account - not the account that iTunes on your friend's computer was logged in with when you stole music?
Was this music on your friend's computer downloaded from the iTunes store? If so and this music includes DRM protection, the iTunes account used to download the music with was transferred to your iPhone with the music.
And you didn't sync your iPhone with iTunes on your computer - or you didn't sync ANY iTunes content for if you had, your iPhone would have been erased of all iTunes content since your iTunes library is empty.
Since you have logged in with your iTunes account with iTunes on YOUR computer, I suggest restoring your iPhone with iTunes. This will erase the music on your iPhone that was stolen.

  • My app requires photo access but does not show up

My photo editing app requires access to my photos and so I go to privacy settings but the app is not listed at all. I have even gone into Restrictions but it wasnt there either!
I've restarted my ipad and still nothing!

I about to tear my already thinning hair out. Philo124, you have saved me from doing this. I have been around in circles, searched the web from dawn till dusk for several days and yet just now in less than 5 minutes, I have problem solved. I can tell you that the Forbidden City in Beijing would have had an Apple IPhone stuffed in a crevice somewhere had my wife not insisted it took good photos.  No not the normal camera on it but Cameara Plus  pro.  Any how, thank you for your sound and helpful knowledge.
How do I give this the 10 points tick???

  • IPhone app that allows cable transfer of files and viewer feature

    Hi Guys,
    Now I'm really getting desperate...
Does anyone know of an app that allows you to transfer files to your iPhone via the USB cable and has a partner iphone app that allows you to view the files.
I'm looking specifically for PDF and Html viewer.
I can't use the WiFi and can't download using 3G...too expensive.
I've tried a few apps thus far but they allow you transfer files to locations that the iphone apps cannot access.
    Kind regards,
    Neelan
    Kind regards,
    Neelan

There used to be an app that did this called "FileAid". The app was free, but to use it you need to purchase an app called "DiscAid" from the developer. It allowed for file transfers between iPhone and computer using a USB cable or wifi. Recently, the app was changed AT APPLE'S REQUEST to eliminate the USB functionality. Why? I have no clue, other than having this feature took away from Apple's MobileMe file transfer functionality. I did NOT accept the upgrade. Below is an email I received from the developer.
What really irks me is that I paid for the DiscAid app. By removing this functionality, Apple has ripped me off. Fortunately, the developer has more integrity than Apple has.
"As a DiskAid user, you might be using FileAid to view files on your device.
If this is your case you are maybe aware already: we had to upgrade FileAid 1.4 to 1.5 and we changed the name to FileApp, incidentally.
The USB connectivity within FileApp was removed and we did not want that: it was not our choice but the consequence of a decision taken by Apple, nor did we wanted to have to rush to release it.
Besides, all iPhone Apps supporting the USB file transfer will be affected by that.
We were very upset about Apple's decision not to let our users enjoy the simplicity and efficiency of USB file transfer, but we had no choice as you can imagine. We are very sorry about that.
DiskAid (USB transfer tool) is still perfectly functional for file storing and iPhone/iPod Touch filesystem access but FileApp won't let you view your files on the device.
It is probably pretty uncommon, but we would like you NOT to UPGRADE to FileApp in the App Store automatically, but to read the following carefully before:
    Why Should you Upgrade:
If you have a jailbreak on your device
If you are a FileAid user only using WiFi connection for transferring files - WiFi connectivity issue fixed
    Why You Should NOT Upgrade:
If you are using FileAid on a device without jailbreak in conjunction with DiskAid - USB no longer supported
If you have upgraded on your iPhone by mistake (or you missed the upgrade information notice prior upgrading on your iPhone) you have the ability to downgrade to FileAid if you haven't upgraded within iTunes on your desktop and you haven't performed a sync!
    To do so:
1 - Check that you have FileAid in your iPhone apps within iTunes on your computer
2 - Delete the FileApp app from your iPhone (or iPod Touch)
3 - Select FileAid within the app tab in iTunes and press sync
If a message appears warning that you have a more recent version of this app on the device, accept: it will install FileAid instead of FileApp
If you have upgraded to FileApp directly in iTunes on your computer, delete it before sync (if applicable) and the FileAid app will be copied back onto iTunes at next sync.
It is a real issue for us, as the ability to browse files transferred via USB within our iPhone app FileAid was a great feature within the DiskAid program we will sure suffer from that - but we won't let our loyal customers take the blame.
We would naturally refund users that claim for, even beyond our refund policy (up to 60 days).
Also if you had a good time while the trick lasted, or if you feel any sympathy for us and you think that your purchase could subsidize the development and maintenance of the free version of the FileAid/FileApp and you do not request a refund, we would thank you in advance for your support!"

  • HT201699 My carrier is Straight Talk (using ATT network) and they require the user to enter the APN settings in order to access their data network. My Iphone 4s is factory unlocked but I can not get to the Cellular Data Network tab to enter the settings?

My carrier is Straight Talk (using ATT network) and they require the user to enter the APN settings in order to access their data network. My Iphone 4s is factory unlocked but I can not get to the Cellular Data Network tab to enter the settings?

Yes ATT hides the APN settings so when you try to use a st sim it automatically reads on AT&T network so the APN settings are hidden and cannot be accessed however you can go to apn.straighttalk.com on you'r phone and select APN/data settings then select AT&T then iPhone and a screen will pop up asking if you would like to install the profile for whatever reason it's not verified but works fine. You can also go to www.unlockit.co.nz and set up a straight talk APN profile that is verified not sure exactly what that means but both work to get the data working on the phone for straight talk but it does not make the MMS work. There are a couple other methods I have read about one is on howardforums using ibackupbot to manually change the files on the phone I haven't been able to get mine to stick using that method but other people have and there is a sim swap method to trick the phone to reveal APN settings using a tmobile sim I have not tried this but other people have with success. The last two methods mentioned will make both data and MMS work

  • HT201485 My iphone won't let me download apps and refers me to my computer for verification. My computer will not access itunes due network issue. How to make iphone stand alone for downloads & updates.

In iTunes my iPhone refers me to iTunes on my computer for verification. iTunes won't work on my computer. How can both my iPhone and iPad stand alone?

Turns out that when my iPod Touch was restored, the restrictions had been turned ON for Facebook and several other apps. This is what was preventing the Facebook app from accessing my Camera Roll for picture downloads. This is odd since all of my iPod backups would not have had those settings turned on. This is also the first time this has occurred given the few times I've had to restore my iPod Touch.
Anyway if you experience the same behavior from your iPod or iPhone with iOS 8.0.2, just go to the General settings and review your settings under Restrictions. Once you set them to allow for changes, you should be back in business.

  • When trying to use my banking apps I get the error "Network Required  This application requires an active Internet Connection.  Please try again"

When trying to use my banking apps I get the error "Network Required  This application requires an active Internet Connection.  Please try again".  This happens with two different apps from two different banks.  One of them works occasionally and have not figured out why.  I have cell signal and I am on a strong WiFi network.  Same thing happens when I turn off the WiFi too.    I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the app with no improvement.   I can't seem to find any setting that would cause this.   Does anyone have any suggestions?

I can access the internet just fine in the browser and i can use any other app i have.

  • TS4020 How can I locate my lost iPhone 5 with find my iPhone app ? Plus someone tried accessing my apple I'd on FaceTime on an unknown number related to iPhone 5 is this who's got my phone and can I track a number ?

How can I locate my lost iPhone 5 with find my iPhone app ? Plus someone tried accessing my apple I'd on FaceTime on an unknown number related to iPhone 5 is this who's got my phone and can I track a number ?

If you activated the Find My iPhone service (in Settings>icloud), and if the device's batteries still have a charge, the device is not turned off and has not been reset and is connected to wifi, then you can try to track it.  Using a computer's browser, log into icloud.com and look at the Find My iPhone page.  On a device, invoke the Find My iPhone app (get it for free at the itunes app store) and log into the icloud account.  Note:  The Find My iPhone **app** does not turn on the service, you can only do that through Settings>icloud.
If the device is listed as "offline", then one of the requirements listed above is not met (like being connected to wifi, or if the device was stolen and the thief reset it).

  • Iphone App access

Is there a way to put certain app requiring the password to access? I know that the phone has a general access password but if someone has my phone using it and I do not want them to access my email I want to passwod that app. I have seen app that allow it if the phone is unlocked but is there a way without that. I do not know how ATT would feel if I unlock my phone.

There is no such app for an unhacked iPhone. If you do decide to hack your iPhone, AT&T won't care either way but your warranty will be void and you could face problems with future updates. If your mail has information that is secret do not leave your iPhone unattended and do not let other people use it out of your eyesight then the problem is solved without an app.
If you would like Apple to include a password feature in the mail app, tell them here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Yes the phone belongs to me. It was purchased from United Kingdom Vodafone to West Africa, i had to factory unlock to use any sim in it. so it belongs to me. I did the activation myself, now after updating my iphone to the latest update, it required a user id and password to activate the phone, but anytime i enter the details, it tells me the user Id is not correct but the password is correct..
