Do LR 32 bits and 64 bits catalogues play nicely together?

I am considering to upgrade my desktop computer to Vista 64 and LR 64, whilst my laptop will remain with XP 32 and LR 32. I have all my catalogues on portable drives so I can swap them between the desktop and the laptop without having to go through (and keep track of) lengthy sync procedures. Will I be able to keep this one set of catalogues also after the upgrade, i.e. will the same catalogues open easily for read/write both on LR 32 and LR 64?

The underlying database is the same so long as the LR version is the same. So the key is to make sure you are running LR x.x on the 32bit machine and LR x.x on the 64bit machine. If one is LR x.x and the other is LR y.y then you will have an issue. This is true even across OS platforms. I regularly open the same catalogue under Windows and OS X.

  • MacBook Pro and 27" Display not playing nice together

I'm having a rather strange problem with my Early 2011 MacBook Pro and my 27" Apple Display (Mini-Display port). They don't want to play nice together. The display will randomly/intermittently disconnect and turn black, then reconnect, sometimes after a second or so, but sometimes not for a good 10 seconds or more.
    - My MBP works fine on other monitors (Thunderbolt 27", 24" LG via DVI adaptor).
    - My wife's MBP works fine on this monitor.
    - Had a tech look at the monitor, his MacBook works on it fine too.
    - The combination of my MBP and this 27" Apple Display gives you the result shown in the video.
It happens quite frequently -- often enough to make working on this combination unbearable. But I have no clue as to what's going on here.
In "System Information" under "Graphics / Displays", the display not show up as connected to either the PCIe or Built-In graphics adapter when the 27" has turned black. When the screen is on, it shows up.
Here's a YouTube video of the symptoms.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0C50k0189I
I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas?

Your video shows the MacBook Pro display turning blue for a few seconds, several different times. This is an acknowledgement that a display is coming (or going).
Unencumbered by anything sensible, my diagnosis would be that you have a loose connection.
Mini DisplayPort cables can be diabolical. When inserting, you must make certain that essentially ALL of the metal end disappears inside the computer jack.

  • How to get iphoto 09 and lightroom to play nicely together?

my current workflow is this: drop originals onto iphoto and edit in external editor from within iphito. the current external editor is photoshop elements 8. When I'm done with the edit, I save and the edited photo shows up in iphoto and the original is saved behind the scenes. Lightroom, as well as Aperature doesn't have a save function, they boyh have an export function which is not the same as save. My edited and exported photo never makes it to the edit folder which has to be created by iphoto the first time you edit a photo in an event. Anybody have an idea how I can get lightroom to play nicely with iphoto?
    thanks
    JAW

You can't. You're confusing Lightroom and Aperture with an image editor.
Lightroom, as well as Aperature doesn't have a save function, they boyh have an export function which is not the same as save.
They work very differently from iPhoto. Where iPhoto saves your edits in a new file, these apps don't. Instead they record your decisions in their database and when you view a photo these are applied live on top of the original. So, your edits are saved, just in an totally lossless way.
You cannot use either Lightroom or Aperture as an external editor with iPhoto for the very simple reason that neither of them is an "editor". They, like iPhoto, are Digitial Asset Managers. Like iPhoto they have powerful abilities to post-process a photo, but that's not the same as "editing". You can't add things to a photo - like text or layers, and your ability to remove things is quite limited - though not as limited as iPhoto. Both are specifically optimised for working with Raw formats rather than Jpeg.
To use something as an external editor it will need to be a: an editor and b: have no database or image management ambitions.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    _[The Gimp|http://www.gimp.org/macintosh>_ also free
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    [Pixelmator|http://www.pixelmator.com> ($60 approx.)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Do Yosemite and Adobe CS5.0 play well together?

I'm a visual designer - both graphic and web. Adobe CS is how I do my work.
I had a disastrous time when I upgraded my (then) new desktop to Mavericks awhile back (it had just come out, right around the time I got my newest machine), was told by some Apple tech that "you can get a free upgrade of Keynote when you upgrade to Mavericks!!!" Was a knee jerk move on my part, caused almost every one of my apps to break since Mavericks was programmed to only work with the latest/bleeding edge versions of everything, apparently. Took me weeks and weeks to right my apps situation with the new OSX, not only my Adobe CS apps, but Powerpoint, my Epson printer drivers, zipping software, etc. etc. the list went on and on. Every time I thought I was good to go, something else broke. Ugh.
Now I've got a client working in the latest version of Keynote, and the latest OSX (Yosemite). I've been holding off on downloading Yosemite since the last debacle, although would be nice (I think - I've also noticed Apple's been denigrating Keynote lately ... tsk tsk) to have the free upgrade to the newest version of Keynote, as well.
My question is this - since I have INSTALLED (not cloud-based. Refuse to go to subscription based ... I want to OWN the copies of my apps) versions of Adobe CS 5.0-55 on my machine (only my INDD is 6.0), will Yosemite play nicely with those apps? And what about Office 2011 for Mac? (I only use PPT from this suite) Anyone have any experience with this, and can you confirm that you did NOT have a problem with these app versions when upgrading to Yosemite? I do not want to go through that mess again!
    Thanks.

Sorry folks, should have poked around more before posting my question. Feedback can be found in the link below - in short, I'm NOT upgrading at this point in time. Sounds like the same thing going on with the new OSX as with Mavericks. Cannot afford to wade through hours of troubleshooting and catch up once again! (sigh)

  • After Effects CC and Windows 8 not playing well together.  How can I fix this?

I thought the problem was a specific project file, but then it happened during another, and then another that I was building without any funky assets.  After Effects suddenly ceases to respond, it flickers uncontrollably while Windows 8 Explorer becomes semi-unresponsive as well.  When AE becomes responsive again, the same thing happens when I go to make another edit or two.
Troubleshooting: What I noticed is when I go to the Task Manager to kill Explorer, AE responds again.  Until I go to make another few edits at least, where it then starts to flicker uncontrollably again.  Does anybody else have this problem?  This is really putting a kink in my workflow.

  • Actiontec dsl Gateway and WRT160N don't play well together

I have an actiontec dsl gateway router as my entry point to the network that also provides one wireless zone downstairs. Upstairs where the signal is weak I had long used an apple airport connected via ethernet cable. Then the apple died and I chose to replace it with a WRT160n. Although everything checked out fine during configuration, it would drop connections and although it appeared was impossible sometimes to connect to with lots of timeouts etc.
Now the entire network has slowed down considerably. After I took off the new router things sped up again. Any ideas on how to set this up better or troubleshoot what's happening?

Adjust the Wireless Settings on your Router -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...Under Setup change the MTU to 1350 and save the changes...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • The New iPad and iPhoto: will they play nicely with Aperture

After seeing the awesome demonstration of the the iPhoto for the The New iPad I am excited to use it once my new iPad is delivered.
However, long ago, I abandonded iPhoto on my Mac for Aperture.
Does anyone have any idea if iPhoto on the iPad can share/sync photos with Aperture on the Mac?  I'm guessing so.  Would love to be able to use the iPad to sort through, edit, delete, photos, then have them sync so they are available in Aperture.  I'm sure this will be available through PhotoStream, but with its limit of 1000 photos, that's not exactly what I'm hoping for.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi Terence,
You are right in many aspects, in particular when it comes to doing edits on a tablet to a photograph... Being a photographer I see no point in editing photographs on a display that will not show true colours to begin with... And in fact the fact that both Aperture and Lightroom do not support editing within colour channels (only photoshop does to my knowledge) makes them both very clumsy tools apart from two important functions: 1 sorting and previewing 2 adjusting exposure (and ONLY exposure). Aperture has a better RAW converter than Lightroom this is the only reason for using Aperture over Lightroom (OK it is user friendlier too).
The only Workflow support a tablet CAN and should provide professionally speaking is pre-sorting, ratings, colour labeling, possibly croppings. Everything else should be manioulaated on a big true colour screen and preferably within the colour channels in Hotoshop.
That means all the iPad needs to provide is: 1) an upload from you camera directly into the iPad (check) 2) a sorting, labeling and rating function.
Ironically the second function does exist -- for Lightroom .... The app is called Photosmith and works like a charm. Unfortunately Lightrooms RAW converter isn't great so then I have to export from Lightroom back to several folder mimicking my various rating and sortings and then re-import to Aperture... Yes we're in 2012! And yes we are talking of the prime product of the most highly valued Technology company called Apple
I'm going at length to explain this because a) I'm increasingly frustrated at Apple's complete misregard for real professional needs (which seems to grow exponantionally with every success they celebrate in the consumer market) and b) frustrated with the ipad - being one of my worst purchases in 2011. Not because it isn't cool, but because it is simply being artificially cut in functionality just so that Apple may sell more Macbooks.
Because the only true reason for a laptop these days is either you are constantly travelling - and I mean constantly... which few people truely are... or you're working in a remote location... Or your iPad just doesn't perform enough even for basics so that you still need to take a laptop even if you're away for just a week or two and intheory all you need is email and an app to rate and colour code the images you took, and possibly upload them to a server so that an assistant can take care of the rest - because you're too busy to be actually retouching images anyway...
I hope Tim Cook will change a few things - he does seem a bit less stubborn. I am hoping for the best because I know a few people within my circles (we're all early adopters and were proud owners of the Titanium Powerbook) who are already thinking of alternatives... Cheers

  • Just another data point on the Itunes/Win8 issue. My AppleTV, AppleRemote (in IP5), and Win7 machines all play well together. Sharing, control, etc all work fine. Alas, my Win8 desktop, running Itunes and sharing on, shows no sign of network life.

A bit more detail: AppleRemote controls AppleTV properly and sees the Win7 machine's shares. The Win8 desktop has updates installed for Itunes and all drivers. Itunes runs fine but does not share even though the computer is authorized and Sharing is turned on.
I have disabled the Windows Firewall and also disabled the MS Kernel Network Debugger. Neither AppleTV nor the AppleRemote App appear to be aware of the Win8 Itunes share at all.
Any suggestions or help are appreciated. From the looks of the posts, it appears that others are struggling with this one also.

I decided to keep my old 20" Core Duo iMac as a Server in the bedroom, and now use it as a television and PVR as well. I wouldn't have made much on eBay anyway.

  • KVM switch and Mavericks don't play well together

I upgraded to Mavericks yesterday, and started having this very annoying problem with my KVM switch, which used to work fine with Mountain Lion. I've been using this KVM switch for my mac mini and PC, in order to share my keyboard and mouse, very stably for several months.
Basically, when switching back and forth, there is a chance that ALL the peripheral devices would stop working in Mavericks. This includes my apple bluetooth keyboard and the magic touchpad, which are not related with USB (or maybe the bluetooth chip is still hooked up via USB inside).
For some reason, screen sharing stops working too, althought the IP I was trying to connect to was the ethernet port.
If I try to do a shutdown -r now via SSH, the system tries to shut itself down, but would get stuck with a spinning animation on the screen.
There is nothing in the system log, no error message.
My KVM switch is an IOGear GCS42UW6. Connected USB devices are: Apple USB keyboard and Logitech G500 mouse.

10.8 worked well with my Mac Mini (2009) connected to IOGEAR KVM model GCS1108. My mouse is from Redmond and the keyboard is a Goldtouch.
Mavericks has a problem with my KVM switch as well. It seems to be a USB problem.
Case 1: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch -- mini DVI port to DVI. If the KVM USB cable (known good) is connected, the Mini chimes at boot but no grey Apple logo appears. LCD remains blank white. Boot does not progress.
Case 2: The Mini's video is connected to the KVM switch, as before. If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected, the Mini chimes at boot, the grey logo appears, and boot proceeds normally. Video is fine. I  then connect the KVM USB cable to the Mini and use keyboard and mouse. KVM switching works as expected.
If the KVM USB cable is NOT connected but a keyboard and mouse are connected directly to the Mini, the boot sequence is normal. Video works.
The problem is not the hardware, all of which worked well with 10.8 (Mountain Lion). I would downgrade if Apple made 10.8 available from the App Store.

  • New Airport Express and iPod Touch not playing nicely

I've been using Verizon FiOS for over a year, and during installation the tech hooked up a wireless Actiontec router. The router worked fine most of the time, but every once in a while it stopped working with the iMac and iPod Touch (1G). Sometimes it would work but then drop the signal for a few moments and reconnect moments later. Sometimes I couldn't connect for days at a time. I would either need to unplug the router for a few minutes or call Verizon to have a tech reset its settings. I do have my Xbox 360 plugged in via ethernet to the router, and during these outages, the Xbox worked. I figured that the router's wireless connection wasn't as compatible as it could be with my iMac and iPod Touch. I decided to purchase an Airport Extreme because my folks have one, and using the iPod Touch there was as easy as could be. It always connects instantly and has a strong signal throughout the house.
I hooked up my brand new Airport Extreme last week. Verizon's setup is through coax, so I have the coax plugged into the Actiontec, and an ethernet connection from this router to the WAN on the AE. The AE is in bridge mode. Both routers are downstairs next to my TV and Xbox, and my iMac is upstairs. The connection thus fas has been solid on the iMac. I get full signal strength and great download speeds. This isn't any different from the Actiontec; I am just hoping that the AE doesn't drop the signal and need to be reset like the Verizon router needed from time to time. The Xbox 360 is also hooked up to the AE now, via ethernet. It's working just fine, too.
My problem is now with the iPod Touch. Its connection to the AE is weak in comparison. If I am sitting right on front of the AE downstairs, it works. As soon as I go upstairs (where the Actiontec worked just fine), it loses the signal completely. At the top of my stairs, around fifty feet from the AE with no walls between the AE and iPod, I lose the connection. It simply does not work upstairs, even though this is where the iMac is located. The Actiontec router is no longer broadcasting wirelessly. Obviously I am trying not to use that router because it's unreliable, so I really want the iPod to work with the AE.
I have read I don't see anything here that helps me. I have reset the network settings on the iPod Touch. I have unplugged and replugged in the Airport. There's not much else I can think of to figure out why the signal reaches the iMac just fine from a distance but not the iPod. If anyone has troubleshooted this before, I'd really appreciate your help.

I have a very similar problem with my AE! My MacBook, MacBook Pro & iPod Touch (1st Generation) all get a GREAT signal from our AE. BUT, our iPod Touch (2nd Generation) and new iPad (WiFi) get terrible signal strength unless we're right next to the AE!! Tech support at Apple is of no help! I'm ready to sell them all! This all started when we got the last OS update for iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad. So it must be a software issue not a hardware one..
    Any ideas?

  • F2FS and rEFInd don't play well together?

For a few days now I've been trying to install the F2FS file system onto an HP Envy 6 laptop with a tiny (30GB) Intel SSD.  The SSD itself is enterprise-grade and is fully functional to my knowledge at the time of this writing.  I will be testing that last statement later today so I may have to retract my last sentence if I prove that assumption to be false.
The problem is simple:  I can install Arch using an up-to-date ISO and that's fine.  In line with the wiki (see here: F2FS wiki page) I made the boot directory a 512MB Fat 32 EFI partition (EF00 type).  I formatted all of my other partitions as F2FS volumes.  This part works splendidly as far as I can see.  However, when I reboot to finish the install I get a rEFInd splash screen but the normal icons (which are suppose to allow you to choose which install you want to boot into) are not visible.  I only see the words and icons below the primary one (the ones for information, reboot and shutdown options).  I have tried to install this with an older Arch ISO and I get (unsurprisingly) the same result (this is a net install after all).
I use Syslinux on my desktop machine and I'm very happy with it. I considered installing it instead of but its implementation is, at the present time, full of bugs and ugliness.  I have used Gummiboot once in the past but it was only after several hours of trial and error that I got it to work.  I have found rEFInd's installer to be simpler to use and has a more attractive presentation on the whole.  For these reasons I would prefer to use rEFInd but if I have to I'll use something else if this issue is un-resolvable at this point in its development.
I have tried F2FS in the past but I opted to discontinue using it in the past because it lacked (at that time) an fsck mechanism to recover from crashes and other unexpected fun.  As of a couple of weeks ago there was a commit that showed that F2FS does now have a viable fsck mechanism built-in.
I also would like to hear from anyone else's (un)succesful trials with F2FS.  I'd be grateful to if I could reading any other person's first-hand experiences and opinion would of F2FS.
Edit:  I forgot to add that I did look at the SSD wiki page entry but it only mentions F2FS as a possible file system to use and provides a link the Wikipedia's list of possible file systems to use for SSDs.  See here:  F2FS on SDDs
    Thank you,

Considering that rEFInd is not a bootloader at all and knows nothing about the filesystem of your rootfs, I am going to guess this has more to do with your rEFInd config than your choice of filesystem.
Maybe it would help if you posted your rEFInd config and a 'tree /boot' (you'll need the tree package from [community]).

  • [SOLVED]Compton, Conky and RXVT-Unicode not playing nicely

Hello. I'm having some problems making my desktop how I want it. My window manager is fluxbox.
First problem is just a minor inconvenience, but annoying. When I login, a transparent terminal spawns to my specification, but it is skewed.
    http://i.imgur.com/hrEEh3H.jpg
However, as soon as I open any window it fixes itself
    http://i.imgur.com/WXQZ9e3.jpg
Second problem is that I can't figure out how to remove the shadow under conky. I know that it is coming from the slit, but it just won't go away. I can get it to go away if I set conky to desktop instead of panel, but then when I launch any window it overlaps with the conky bar, and that is unaceptable. Maybe there is a fluxbox configuration option that reserves some space so nothing can overlap it? But I couldn't find anything.

using lowercase conky in compton doesn't change anything. I'm pretty sure that shadow is not from conky, but from the slit. When I set the slit to autohide in the init file, the shadow hides as well. And there is no shadow in any other conky window type I've tried, except type panel. Unfortunately, it is the only one so far with the behavior I want.
I would like to use true transparency in urxvrt, since that does solve the skew issue and I think it looks better. However, in doing so the terminal is quite useless since there is a lot of text that I can't see, because the font becomes the same color as certain backgrounds. Unless there is a way to separate it? I want it to look like the one on the left (left = fake transparency, right = true transparency).

  • Safari and 1passwords are not playing well together since updates??

Safari will not allow me to enter websites with 1passwords.  When I input the password it reverts back to enter you pasword.  I have updated to all of the newest versions and Safari is still not working.  I am having no issues with Firefox.  Been exchanging emails with Agilebits and have sent them two diagnostic reports, still no one has an answer??  Can anyone help?

Some people are having some problems although some fixed it with the following solution.
    Go here https://agilebits.com/extensions/mac/index.html
Check the checkbox "Allow beta extensions"
and download the recent version of 1password for Safari.
Clean Up & Reset Safari by doing the following:
Many times corrupt application resources are the reason for an application's slow performance. Safari has a variety of these, and Apple has conveniently enabled quick resetting of these resources through the "Reset Safari..." option in the "Safari" menu. Despite this, some people may wish to still reset Safari's resources manually. To do this, Quit Safati and locate and remove the files in the following folders:
    /username/Library/Cookies/
    /username/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/
    /username/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/
Then remove the following from the /username/Library/Safari/ folder:
    Downloads.plist
    Form Values
    History.plist
    HistoryIndex.sk
    LastSession.plist
    LocalStorage (folder)
    TopSites.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
    Delete caches
Safari enables you to remove its cache from the "Reset Safari" option; however, you can use a third-party cache cleaning utility built for your operating system to remove all system caches to clear any faults with them that might be affecting Safari. Several of these utilities are: OnyX
    Get Onyx at: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx
After all of this open Safari

  • LR and Organizer playing nicely together?

    Hi all,
I am an advanced LR user.  I just started working with Premier Elements and do use Photoshop Elements (on the very few occasions that LR won't do the trick).  The Elements series uses Adobe Organizer to locate images and video clips, so I figured this is an important tool to get to know.  I pointed Organizer at the top of my image and video hierarchy and told it to import.  After about 12 hours of my MacBook Pro become a veritable flamethrower, the import process was finished.  Apparently Organizer was able to successfully read all of the tagging done in LR and even pick out some faces.  Very Cool!
So now the big test came.  I imported more fresh photos and videos onto my disk via Lightroom.  I then started up Organizer hoping that it might just automatically see the new assets and add them to its catalog.  No dice, but no surprise :-(  I was able to manually import the new images into Organizer, but that is a pain.  Is there any way to get LR and Organizer more in synch?  Thanks in advance for any ideas!
    Paul

Paul's issue is that he wants to use Premier Elements to author videos from video clips and still images. Premier is indeed tightly integrated with the Elements Organizer and relies on it as the primary method for accessing clips and images.  Unfortunately, I don't think there is a convenient way to have the two play together nicely.  Consider the approaches:
    - Use LR's library module to tag and find clips and images. This approach has some serious issues: LR doesn't handle the range of video formats that Elements does (though it may be adequate for you), and it has limited metadata capabilities for video (you can't change the capture time, for example).  You'll have to export images you've edited in LR to JPEG format, since Elements won't understand LR's internal representation of edits.  And you'll have to use File > Open in Elements, rather than the Organizer or LR's library, to include clips and images in your video projects, which could be fairly clumsy.
    - Use LR's library module to tag clips and images but use Organizer to find clips and images for inclusion in Elements projects. In this approach, you first import all clips and images into LR's catalog and tag them.  In the Organizer, you enable the File > Watch Folders functionality to monitor the same set of folders where you import clips and images, and whenever you start Organizer, it will automatically import new clips and images from those folders.  A couple of additional problems with this: LR doesn't write metadata (tags, captions, and dates) back to video clips, so the Organizer won't see your metadata changes. Also, if in LR you change an image's metadata after it's already imported into Organizer, there's no way to get those changes into the Organizer's catalog.
    - Use LR's library module to tag and find images, but use the Organizer to tag and find  video clips.  This will have a mix of the issues of the previous two approaches.

  • Suggestions? DVDSP4 and LaCie d2 not playing well together

Trying to burn dvd from SP4 to new LaCie d2 DVD external drive. I keep getting error message "#6" indicating that there's a problem with the power/ or bus reset.
I can burn an image from disk utilities, so I know that the Mac OS (10.4.2) can talk to this drive; I can also burn from Toast.
Neither LaCie nor Apple support knows for sure what's up. Recommendations?
    Thanx!

    Hi John,
I have a very similar setup. And found that connecting the external drive through the firewire interface proved to be a more robust solution than via usb.
Otherwise our external La Cie burner runs faultlessly on a wide variety of host machines.
