Do Luminance values affect colour saturation?

Hi, after many months I eventually reduced my cd/m from 125 to 100 when calibrating my monitor at 6500 for daytime work and 5800 for evening work.  I was always having printouts darker than screen you see.  Now the shadow and highlights are spot on in photoshop (no discrpency anymore) But, I now find that in CS3 my colours are slightly more saturated in the prints and even more saturated in Illustrator CS3 on graphics.  rendering intents have not been altered for printing, all the usual parameters remain unchanged - just the new calibration target of 100 cdm.  So does this lesser luminance mean my colours on the screen are less saturated because of this?
thankyou kindly.

cvbotr,
Actually....yes....brightness can affect saturation.  If you think about it, as you approach pure white or pure black, saturation MUST decrease.  For example, you can't have a pure white color that is also a highly saturated red.  That is an "impossible color", at least from a human perception standpoint.  You can define such a color in L*a*b* color space, but it will display as something other that a pure white / highly saturated red.  The same thing happens as you approach black....the chroma (or saturation) diminishes. Saturation usually max's out somewhere in the midtone region, and adjusting tonality from that point toward either white or black will reduce the saturation that a given color space can display.
A darker image often appears "richer" and more saturated.  Of course, it depends on the tonality of the pixels you are looking at.  Lightening a very dark image can increase saturation, and darkening a light "washed out" image can also increase saturation.  This is largely a human perception issue.  If you have a CMYK color that is 100C, 100M, oY, 100K, I guess you could say that is a very saturated Dark Blue, but when you look at it printed on a sheet of paper, it is a deep, rich black, not blue. If you take out the black component, now you have a dark blue.  At what point does dark blue become black?  It is a human perception thing.
In RGB terms, the most saturated red you can achieve is 255R, 0G, 0B.  The only way to make this color lighter is to increase the green and blue components.  As those two components increase toward 255, you invariably move toward white, with a resulting loss in saturation. You can observe this in the Photoshop color picker.
I remember a photo I took of bright autumn foliage on a brilliant October day in late afternoon.  The leaves were backlit.  I wanted to portray that bright scene with light, shadows, and the dazzling colors of the red and yellow leaves with the sun shining through them.  It's a difficult challenge on an RGB monitor, and doubly difficult in print.  The dynamic range and color gamut of the real scene greatly exceeded what both the monitor and printer were capable of delivering.  I started by making the highlights as bright and the shadows as dark as possible.  Unfortunately, this lightened some of the reds and yellows, and consequently, I lost some of the intense color saturation that the picture was all about.  There was no perfect answer to this problem, but I finally sacrificed some brightness to achieve better color saturation and found a balance that worked for me.  That is a perfect example of what you are talking about.
BTW, I find 90-100 cd/m2 to be about right for good monitor to print matching.  I use 90 cd/m2, 5200K, and 2.2 gamma.

  • Colour Saturation external monitor

I was looking for a colour saturation option for monitor in Intel's control panel and there's only YCbCr correction. Colour saturation is available only for laptop screen. In monitor settings the "Color" slide is grey, so I can't change it. How do I change colour saturation for external monitor connected via HDMI?
    I have a Hp envy 15-j160no and a Benq E2200HD external monitor.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
It's an external device. The external monitor should have few buttons for you to play around with.

  • Weird Colour Saturation issues with MBA and Dell U2711

    Hey all,
Just picked up a new Dell U2711 for use with my MBAir and my PC Workstation. I have the MBA hooked up to the monitor via the DVI imput with the official Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. What i'm experiencing is some bizzare colour saturation discrepancies. I've attached two screenshots to illustrate the issue...
For some reason, icons in the dock and in Launchpad are displaying WAY more saturated than their icons when displayed in a regular finder window.
Has anyone else seen anything like this? Any ideas where I could start looking to find a solution?
    Thanks!

Just updated the post with a new screenshot that better illustrates the problem. I origainly had a firefox issue as well, but that was fixed by changing the colour correction settings in that application.

  • Adjusting colour saturation

I'm trying to match my Cinema Display to a PAL CRT broadcast monitor. I've managed to set most things how I want them, but find the colours are much more intense on the Cinema Display.
Is it possible when calibrating an Apple Cinema Display to reduce overall colour saturation? I can't seem to find a way.

  • Are the values inaccurate in Saturation Adjustments?

Using the saturation adjustment turns a color into its grayscale  value, correct? For example, if you select a photo, and move the  saturation level to 0, the image becomes a grayscale image.
But if you create a square and make it a bright green and then move the  saturation level to 0, the gray is darker value than the original bright  green.
so, is using the saturation adjustment on the green square creating an  inaccurate unsaturated color square of a darker gray?

When you desaturate in LAB, you are still maintaining three to four channels.
L*a*b has three channels and not four. (Additional channels and Spot channels are naturally available, though.)
The luminance-channel for brightness and two channels for the color-axis’ (green-red and blue-yellow) – those may appear a bit difficult to handle, because 50% signifies neutral and white saturation of the one, black of the other color.
But when you desaturate by grayscale mode, you are stripping the image of all channels but one - the grayscale channel.
But for printing this provides a certain security, because variations during the printing process can lead to color shifts – effectively tinting 4C-black and white-images.
So at the very least one might consider separating highly desaturated images with a profile that incorporates a strong GCR.

  • Is there an optimal luminance value for LCD monitors

    Hi you all,
I use Lacie 319 high end monitor as my primary monitor and "generic" Fujitsu as my secondary monitor (for PS tools etc.) I have calibrated the monitors with Spyder Elite 3, which also measures the ambient temperature of the room. Based on that measurement it suggests 140 cd for the white point (brightness) to calibrate the screen for. If you do this the prints printed with Epson 4900 (as well as with my previous Epson 4800) print far too dark. The colours are rendered for the printer with Image Print RIP (Colorbyte software). When I calibrate my monitor down to 80 cd the prints are quite OK although still a tiny bit too dark. My question is should I do the LR of PS optimisation of my pictures in the 140 cd monitor brightness and then reduce monitor brightness mechanically to the cd value which gives optimal brightness of the print (some 70 cd?) . Of course I have to adjust the brightness of the picture to be printed viasoft proofing. If continue doing as I do now  making all my picture adjustments using a very low monitor brightness (ideal for the printed result) am I working in a less than optimal area for the monitor to deal with colors. Also do many of the folks in the internet see my pictures too light because they are using much brighter monitors than what I used to adjust the pictures.
Having asked the question I do know that many things affect on how you see or perceive the colors as well as the brightness of the print. So the answer is not that it depends on where you look your prints. I know the measured ambient light of my "lab" (was a photographer already in the time of film) suggests that I should use 140 cd as the brightness value of my monitor. Doing so produces prints far too dark when looked at the same ambient light. Using 80 (or 70 to be exact) cd monitor brightness gives good print results when the prints are looked in the same (as above) ambient light. My question is am I no adjusting my pictures too light for those using the "default" monitor brightness and is the color management of LCD monitors up to standard if you dial them as down as was customary for the big old CRTs.
    yours Kari

    General rule of thumb is:
    80 - 90 cd/m2 for print
    130 - 140 cd/m2 for screen
    What I do:
Edit everything (print and screen) on a 80cd/m2 monitor. It works out very well.
Sounds like you're on the right track.

  • Loss of colour saturation when flattening layers

    Hi,
I'm using Photoshop 7, and have used 'hue/saturation' adjustment layers to add a sepia tone to some images and a wine-red tone to others. Further adjustment layers have also been used to modify brightness and contrast, etc.
I find, though, that when I flatten the layers prior to saving, there's a loss of colour satutation visible on screen. Does anybody know a way of overcoming this?
    Thanks in anticipation,
    Andrew

    That's brilliant. Thanks a lot.

  • In which areas planned values affect..

    Hello Experts,
Can You tell me that in which which areas and modules the planned values of asset module is connected...
E.G. If we change anything related to life of the asset or something else where where it wil affect. If any one has any chart or PPt regarding that.. can you share?

    Hi
It will affect the Planned Values (Dep Values) in the Asset Master in AW01N
Upon next dep run, the differential depreciation of all open previous period / Fiscal year will be posted in the next period / over the next periods
Eg: APC Value 12000, Use ful life 12 months.... So, Dep each month is 1000... You posted Dep till March (3 months)... You change the useful life to 6 months in April....
So, the depreciation posted in April will be 12000/6 (2000)+ (2000-1000) x 3 = 5000 i.e. 2000 of April month + delta depreciation 1000 of earlier months.... This is if you dont tick the SMOOTHING indicator in OAYR
If you tick the smoothing indicator in OAYR, the delta depreciation 3000 will be spread over Apr-Dec i.e. 9 months instead of posting in April itself

  • Major background artifacts when any amount of colour saturation is used

    I just bought Photoshop CS5.
Whenever I open a RAW file in camera raw, then open it up in photoshop and then apply image saturation of any level of strength, the whole image changes tone and the background gets large noise surrounded patches of light colour.
I checked my colour settings and they're fine.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?
    Thanks!!
    Samples included below...
This one is fine... I opened it in Camera RAW, saturated by +10 and saved as a jpeg
This one was opened in Camera raw, then opened in Photoshop and I applied +10 of saturation again, then saved as a jpeg. There are artifacts and patches of lighter colour especially on the leaves in the background. This was only a very small increase in saturation as well, so any significant increase produces much worse artifacts.
Here's a closeup of the leaf in the background of the image above.

It's possible what you're seeing is channel clipping.  After doing a conversion with those artifacts, try clicking on your individual channels to see if any is completely blacked or whited out.  I'm betting you're going to see clipping.
Try converting your raw images to the ProPhoto RGB color space and see if that helps.  The target color space can be set via the little link at the bottom-center of the dialog.
Also, try using the Vibrance control rather than Saturation.

  • W520 LCD colour saturation, brightness

W520 is a fast and powerful machine BUT why it has one of the worst LCD screens?? The colours are shown inaccurately, I am a photographer and when I am using photoshop to handle my photos I cant work because the colours are so inaccurately and i cant see any difference with a small adjustment where i should be really a great change in the photo. Tried to repair it by reading other post in the forum but its pointless.
Another thing to mentioned its that i have already sent it to the lenovo repair centre where they have changed the LCD screen to repair it BUT they installed a lower resolution one instead by mistake, 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080. They asked me to send it back in order to change it. I will ask them to keep it and refund me or refurbish it and sell it on ebay.
I am really disappointed from lenovo, no wonder why the w series prices fall all the time.  I will get a MacBook pro instead.

I'm a photographer too. The FHD LCD is much better than your experience suggests. It's a display with a very large color gamut, so if color management on your computer isn't set up properly, you will see nasty, over-saturated images when working in the sRGB color space.
If you still have the FHD display, download this display profile:  https://dl.dropbox.com/s/wiqq8sxjglwoj5q/dispcalGUI%20ThinkPad%20W520%20Display%201920%202012-04-30%...

  • MC44: material usage value affected by factory calendar

    Hi Gurus,
I've got the following problem: on my 4.6c R3 production instance factory calendar had been setup as 7 working days a week but recently the need was to change it to 5 working days a week due to the introduction of route calculation to determine correct dates for the sales orders.
We changed the factory calendar (which did deliver the correct result for the sales orders) only to discover that the "Usage" value determined for the materials by MC44 got totally wrong (usage with the 5 working days calendar was approximately 30 to 50% LESS than with the 7 days working calendar !!)
As soon as we did restore factory calendar back to 7 working days a week MC44 was again fine (obviously sales orders date got wrong...).
My impression is that everything is based on the way data from table MVER is determined depending on the factory calendar (which is apparently driven by function module DATE_CONVERT_TO_FACTORY_DATE).
I guess I could change from customizing the calendar for the shipping point: in that case my expectation is that sales orders date should be fine as well as results from MC44 but I'm not totally sure about that.
Any idea ?  Do you know which is the way table MVER is populated based on the calendar settings ?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
    Enrico

    Hi Jurgen,
from the logical point of view sounds reasonable but....
    1) even if I didn't fully debug the program (otherwise I guess I would know the answer   )  looks like MVER is the only one considered in terms of usage
    2) even if you forget point 1 (I could obviously be wrong) you're missing one information that I didn't mention: our usage (or consumption if you prefer) is 98% done from Monday to Friday; sometimes we do something on Saturday but this is kind of an exception.
Based on the above, despite the factory calendar is setup on 7 working days a week, our material usage is basically done on 5 working days a week.  Described this way you'll immediately understand that, even if the program reads the data based on the number of working days, changing the calendar from 7 to 5 should cause a decrease of only 2-3%, in our case changing the factory calendar from 7 to 5 working days is causing a decrease of 30% to 50%.
I believe the program is reading the table in a different way based on the factory calendar, I'll try to give you an example:
          Day     Usage
    01   Mon       10
    02   Tue        20
    03   Wed      30
    04   Thu        40
    05   Fri          50     ---> total week 1 far 150
    06   Sat         2
    07   Sun        0      -
    > total of the weekend 2
    08   Mon       100
    09   Tue        200
    10   Wed        300
    11   Thu       400
    12   Fri        500     -
    > total week 2 1500
    13   Sat        6
    14   Sun       0        -
    > total of the weekend 6
For the 2 weeks, factory calendar 7 working days a week, total usage would be 1658.
In your case, switching to 5 working days a week, it should deliver usage only for Monday to Friday, which is 1658 - (2+6)=1650    (i.e. difference is peanuts)
As I said, I couldn't get to the end of the debug, but my impression was that, switching to 5 working days a week (based on the above example) the program would read 10 "days" so from Monday 01 to Wednesday 10, in that case the total would be 1658 - (4005006) = 752  (now difference is huge...).
So......  maybe main question could be: which is the way MVER is populated ?
    Best regards,
    Enrico

  • Hue Saturation Luminance sliders in CR4.1

    Hallo,
Having just posted problems I was having with printing that I thought were due to some aspect of my colour management policies and/or my LCD monitor when tilted, I traced back my editing to the original DNG image and discovered something. As a result i have a simple question:
    1. I know that all adjustments in RAW are global - no problem. But what I want to know is this; When adjusting the luminance values of say in my case the Yellow slider, is this affecting even the yellow values in all the colours of the image? It appears so but I had assumed maybe wrongly that this particular slider and option would have only affected literally the yellow colour, and not the Yellow VALUES in the blues and greys and greens.
Have I now learned something or is this assumption also wrong.
the original problem had to do with a slightly darker print but also a slightly yellow colour cast which COULD NOT BE SEEN on my monitor even when proofing. The RGB values revealed otherwise by a lack of blue values in the RGB info palette, and its opposite, much higher Yellow values in the CMYK info palette.

Hi, as far as matching colours of images, I would never use Hue saturation, In fact The hue saturation sliders are really a very crude means of adjustment, even as a layer. I would use the APPLY IMAGE command under Image.
Ok, Jeff, I can not find post 8, i am probably stupid but I do not see how to get to post 8. As far as your question is concerned about ACR and PS differences; I have never really compared them. Apart from the fact in acr every adjustment you make is global, whereas in PS you can mask out and use layers and target areas to be adjusted. I would imagine that there would not be any fundemental difference in the two. One is manipulating th esame information in both packages. Now if you were to ask me to compare say the HSL sliders of photoserif 11 and ACR then I would choose ACR. the reason being is that PS is a professional package and Serif is not. I began with Serif.
But please let me see your first question (8) maybe I ma missing something.
    Bets Regards
    Chris.

  • CS5 Colour not saturating correctly

Comments: I have a problem with the colour saturation in photoshop CS5. I do exactly the same as photoshop 5.5 but the colours don't saturate as accurately - they appear less saturated. (edit, fill 75% opacity and then image, adjust, brightness/contrast, contrast plus 25)
Do you know how I can get the colour to saturate to the right level while retaining underlying details?
    Thanks

The Brightness&Contrast adjustment in CS5 has a newer option and slightly different curves than the one in Photoshop 5.5 (which differ by about 10 years).
If you want the older effect, click the legacy checkbox in the CS5 adjustment.
And if you just want saturation, don't use Brightness & Contrast - use Hue/Saturation or Vibrance.
