Do Mac drives need to be defragmented periodically like PC's do?

Hi folks,
Do Mac drives need to be defragmented periodically like PC's do? If yes, how do you do that on a Mac?

Sorry to hear about your situation Anonymoose2 - tough spot to be in.
DEFRAGMENTING
I have a lot of experience with defragging in Windows and Mac. It really helps with Windows but on a Mac it is not worth the dollars & time & effort. iDefrag is a quality product, but it costs money (no free trial worth the effort) and it is labor intensive. And it fails to get at everything (even when using it from boot-disk). Besides - it appears that Apple products defragment themselves provided you leave them "on" overnight (perhaps all week?) I have read about this AND have experienced the "performance jump" from doing that. The direct method of tidying data on a Mac is to boot to your install DVD, attach an external drive, access Disk Utilities, then copy your entire OS X contents to the external storage. It takes about 30 minutes to one hour (do it while you make dinner so as not to get bored). Then reverse this - copy the external drive BACK on to your Mac. Perfect defragmentation (if that is important to you - it is very important when experiencing trouble while installing Boot Camp for instance). A perfectly defragmented drive is always a little faster, but that's all you get out of it.
FREE EXTERNAL STORAGE
Put a note up in your area and ask if anyone can donate their old jump drives / memory sticks to you. The new ones are up to 32GB and people tend to ignore their old 2GB or 4GB sticks. Most offices pass them out to staff like candy.
RECOVERING LOST DATA
There is really great software out there for recovering lost data on a Mac. Often even with a free try before you buy - but - those products recommend you do NOT install on the same drive as the lost files. The more you use the drive the more the lost files can be over-written before you recover them. The drive needs to be examined from another machine, unfortunately (and better done by a certified service person).
CLEANING YOUR FILES
There is freeware and shareware which allows you to "see" useless files and duplicated data. You can then safely delete the extra. Photos and music are typical items which take up LOADS of you precious space. (Actually - start right now by deleting your Safari cache and cookies. I had friends who had years of browsing history on their machine and it added up to a LOT of space saved when they dumped it!).
Araxis has some of that clean-your-files software that lets you try before you buy (I liked it) - OmniDiskSweeper is another recommend (I have not tried it yet).
For what it's worth. (Hope things pick up for ya! - Cheers)

Let's hope a couple things: that you have bootable clones of your drives also; that the backup drive for TimeMachine has over 3x capacity of the data you plan and are storing. I would also switch TM backup drives so you have a 2nd.
Fragmented free space affecting performance happens when the drive is too full which may mean there isn't enough free space for a full backup set.
1.5TB for backing up 500GB, while WD Green 3TB is $140 and WD Black 1.5TB is, about the same price.
I'd be worried about the integrity and directory, and whether you can afford to lose that drive. Defragging is also a very slow operation. the ideal: to just clone a drive, or start over with another drive and wait. cloning TM volumes has not been done or has it? SuperDuper hoped to but I don't think they or Bombich's CCC made it there.
Trouble with highly fragged is when free space gets to 20% normally, 1/3 or so though for TM volumes, and finding where and a chunk of space for the file being written. Does TM use large spare image files of like 2GB?
Best would be to ask in the TimeMachine section Snow Leopard

  • Does my hard drive need to be defraged after moving movies to external driv

Becuase my camera and external drive will not both operate by firewire (FW400) at the same time (a common problem according to many posts in this forum), I have to import my movies from my camera to the local drive while the external drive is turned off, then I disconnect my camera, turn on the drive, and then move the imported clips to the external drive using iMove 08. It's a pain, but it does get the job done.
Anyway, my question is: Will I need to somehow defrag my hard drive after many cycles of this process, or does OSX take care of this on its own? (yes, I'm recent Windows switcher).
By the way, I can attach my camera with firewire, and the external drive with USB to import directly to the external drive, but it pauses about every three seconds to let the drive catch up, and I just don't like to see it running that way.

If you set, in System Preferences>Energy Saver, your Mac to sleep "never", then at three in the morning it will - if necessary - look after whatever defragging needs doing.
    Mac OS X is self-defragging.
(..You don't say which camera and hard drive you're using, but in my experience "daisy-chaining" a FireWire camcorder through a 2-port FireWire drive to a FireWire socket on a Mac does usually work. You may have to swap between the two ports on the drive to find out which way works best. It's usually OK with Sony cameras, but Canons, however, do like the FireWire circuit all to themselves ..shame.)

  • Medion P82012 Graphic tablet - Mac driver needed, where to get?

Just got a Medion (P46000 MD 85637) tablet from Aldi, but do not seem to be able to get it to work. Does anybody know if there is a Mac driver (that works) out there? And maybe one that would also allow using the various buttons on the tablet?
    Thanks

But either the 'real' manufacturer or the distributor (Medion) might be the only sources of updated/better drivers.
Stefan I agree, Medion has no drivers for Mac (or so they claim) and the 'real' manufacturer is who?
This Waltop Taiwan firm seems to be that.
Although it might be possible with Medion that they use another one right now.
The link you and I found dates some time back, so might be...
Maybe using the OSX System Profiler and the different hardware and software categories in it can shed some light to that.

    Hi Janice,
What version of Mac OS are you using?
Adobe does not recommend migrating the software from one disk to the other.
Please run the setup file for Acrobat and reinstall the software. You might want to delete the existing version of Acrobat installed before reinstalling it.

  • Need mac driver for TP-Link Wireless USB adapter TL-WN7200ND

i need Mac driver for TP-Link Wireless USB adapter model no TL-WN7200ND

First of all, TP-Link does not provide OS X drivers for that adapter. However, there are other sources that have drivers like this one. It is not official and it may fail, but it has been tested by other users and it works correctly.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT - Mac driver updates?

    Hello,
I've looked around the forums and have found driver related questions for windows / bootcamp but not the Mac.
Does 'Software Update' include ATI Graphics software? Maybe I'm still used to the PC end of things that every week or so (if you're a gamer and such) one needs to be very aware of their directX, graphics, audio drivers etc.
The main reason I ask is I seem to crash often in World of Warcraft, get visual artifacts, and occasional full screen patterns along with lockups. These types of things only happen in WoW.
I've opened up the side of my Mac Pro and cleaned out some dust (i used to build PC's so i thought this might be heat related.) Still though, same issues and I'm thinking either WoW is the issue, my graphics card is the issue, or the driver needs to be updated.
    thanks

    Hi,
I've been doing a lot of reading on this card on many forums -- since I want to upgrade to it -- and I reached the conclussion that with heavy gamers, the ATI X1900 just cooks over a period of time -- 3 to six months typically -- and after that it just irreversibly fails.
keeping it well ventilated from the start can avoid the tragic end, but once the pendorchos inside feel the heat its fate is sealed.
There is a voodoo at the WoW forum that will lobby for you with Apple to get a replacement. Check there.
That said I'm still thinking of buying it since I don't play WoW or any other VC crunching game, and it seems to be doing a terrific job for video and some photo related programs.
    best Luck!
    Pablo

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD.  Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things.  See #10 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

My hard drive needed to be replaced on my iMac. When I try to move the photos from my portable hard drive back onto the Mac, they are small and can't be edited or made any larger. How can I fix them?

YOu restore your phone from your icloud backup.

  • I have an external hardrive for MAC, I needed to save something from my work computer so I can pass it on to my MAC, it requiered me to re-format my external HD and now when I connected to my MAC I only have "read only rights". How do I fix it?

I have an external hardrive for MAC, I needed to save something from my work computer so I can pass it on to my MAC, it requiered me to re-format my external HD and now when I connected to my MAC I only have "read only rights". How do I fix it? I run my Itnues from this external and now my library is gone. Luckily I have it saved somewhere else, which is not a problem, but I won't be able to write to this HD for right now. I can't see an option to give those permission back.

Unless what you have to transfer is enormous, skip the external HD altogether and use a USB flash drive; you can get them with capacities to 128GB. Format the flash drive as FAT32 or ExFAT as LowLuster suggests so it can be read and written to on both PC's and your Mac.

  • How do I restore my Windows XP to a larger internal Mac drive?

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro internal hard drive but still have the Windows XP on a FAT32 partition on the old drive, which I now placed in a USB 2 external case. I would like to put Windows XP on the internal Mac drive so I don't need to carry around the external drive if I want to boot into Windows. If I use Boot Camp to create a FAT32 partition on my internal drive, what do I do afterwards to copy the Windows XP to the FAT32 partition to make it bootable when I hold down the Option key to select an OS? I think there used to be guide I found on Google but I can't seem to find it anymore.
I want to keep FAT32 so I can write to it natively from Mac OS X. I don't think Winclone works with FAT32, only NTFS.

Unfortunately (this is M$ land, after all) I don't know a free way to do it. So you might have to buy Norton Ghost?

  • I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 installed in two computers. The hard drive of my home computer crashed and I had no time to deactivate the software. The hard drive needed to be formatted. How can I activate the software CS5 again ? Thank you for an answer.

If it's the same computer, same CPU and same HD, no de-activation or re-activation should be necessary.
Install from scratch and apply all updates manually.
Please do a forum search.  I and others have repeatedly answered the question about failed updates of CS5 a whole bunch of times recently.
Bottom line:  the Adobe auto updater is utterly useless in CS5 and prior versions.  You need to download the updates and apply them manually yourself.
I and others have even supplied the links for Mac and Win, which you haven't even bothered to specify.

If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. With the Windows drive connected, you can check its format with Disk Utility.
