Do manually entered metadata become lost/overwritten when transferring my library to a new external hd?

will manually entered/adjusted album and song metadata become lost/overwritten when i transfer my itunes library to a new external hd?... assuming that i follow apple protocal for the procedure?  i'm nervous about losing all those minute adjustments i have made over time to my library's music!
any assurance would be GREATLY appreciated!
cheers

If you follow Apple protocol to the tee you should be fine...that being said, I've never had a perfect experience when moving my library. I recently followed this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449 and for the most part the outcome was exactly I had hoped for. In my case, I moved about 80,000 pieces of music from one external HD to a second external HD. I did it all from within iTunes and everything seemed to work. When I compared my source and destination folders however, there were about a thousand files that didn't show up on the destination disk.
The files that didn't come across weren't recognized by iTunes, even though they were MP3 files. After some research I learned that iTunes is particular about certain tags that it doesn't like. I'm still working on the issue and actually have an open question on it which I wrote yesterday if you care to see.
I don't know if I was that much help but I will say that by following the instructions referenced above, I had a very good transition considering the number of files involved.
Good luck,
JB

Was the content not synced with a computer previously?  If it was, simply re-sync with that computer.
Syncing an iDevice to a new computer will do exactly what you describe above as this is not the way to move content to a new computer.

  • ALBUM ART LOST ON WHEN ADD TO LIBRARY FUNCTION IS USED?

I import CD's to the iTunes library on my PowerBook then use the "Add To Library" function (via firewire) to copy them to my external drive when it is connected then delete from the PB. I make sure to add the album art when the CD's are imported but the artwork doesn't transfer when the songs are copied to my external drive. I am afraid I have lost countless album covers but would like to know how to resolve this problem in the future. Any help? Thanks!

Thanks for the article referral. So far my problem is not solved - there were no .mov files in the iTunes library. I'm currently in the process of removing .pls files and examining others for the potential problem.
I'm not there yet, but it gives me a good start - thanks.

I have a new external drive for my time machine.  My hard drive of 650 gb is full.  It is reallyslow backing up to my external drive.  I have to stay near by as it stops after an hour or so.  If I'm not here to restart it, I lose all that time it could have been backing up. It says it is going to take 581 days. Eventually it will say 12 days. Back up time is all over the place.  How can I keep the machine backing up when I sleep at night.

I would go into your  in the upper left corner of the mac
    Click on system preferences
    Click on energy saver
Change the computer sleep and display sleep to never.

  • Photos Lost resolution when transferred to DVD using iDVD

I am new to the iMac and I created a slideshow with pictures imported to iPhoto. When you see the slideshow in the DVD, the photos look awful. Very low resolution. Is there any setting that can help me to improve photo resolution when I create a slideshow in a DVD?

I was reading through a couple of threads here and some I found on other sites through google where people were having the same issues as you describe. Try googling to see what others say. One that I found and would try myself would be to scale DOWN the images. Someone reported by scaling down the images for inclusion into iDVD helped with the quality. I don't know if they used iPhoto's crop tool with the 4x3 (DVD) setting, or if they exported the images using the Export command and scaling down copies of the images from the dialog screen (and then, I guess reimporting sized down images into iPhoto.?!). It's worth a try I guess.
btw...here's one of the threads I was talking about:

  • Folders become read/only when transfered to windows

I find that when I transfer a folder from my Mac to a PC windows reports the folder (and contents) as read only. Ownership is transferable, but try as I might, I cannot change the status to be not read only on windows. However, I can read, write, and modify the folders and files most of the time.
Recently, I transfered a very large folder hierarchy from my Mac to a PC and ran into an additional problem. When I add or modify any document in the hierarchy, the containing folder is duplicated by windows in the same location with the same name but empty of contents. Of course this causes a world of trouble, since there are now two identically named folders in the same location (one of which is empty).
How can this happen and where can I get information on how to prevent it? BTW, I am a Mac user by nature and only use the PC when I have to, that is why I try to find answers here!
Thanks in advance for any help.

I am posting back here because I discovered the cause of the second problem mentioned in the above post. IE: the problem of misbehaving folders in windows.
First, some background. The folder structure is rather large and complex, so I created it using applescript and a text file with outline levels. Unfortunately, some of the outline titles (which became folder titles) ended in a space.
Apparently windows does not like folders (files too?) to end with a space. While this never affected my Mac, when I transfered the data and structure to the PC it went haywire. I did notice that the duplicate folders were not identical as I first thought, but rather were generated without the trailing space(s). Now it is just a matter of removing all the trailing spaces and it appears that windows can handle the folders.
However, every folder I put on the PC still says it is read only and I can't seem to change that. Any help?

  • Lost gmail folder content when transferring from old mac to new

I got a new Mac Pro recently and used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my old mac to the new one.  Everything worked fine except in my gmail account.  None of the mailbox folders I set up transferred.  How can I get them onto the new machine?

If I activate 2-step verification now, would it somehow allow me to access the "lost" gmail folders?
No. Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Lost information when transferring content between authorised macs.

I transferred purchased tv shows between 2 authorised macs but one of them as lost all the accompanying show information, is there any way to get this back?
    Thanks
    Dave

It comes down to two main cases:
Case 1) Old Mac has RJ45 "regular" Ethernet port or AAUI (about 14-pin) Ethernet port:
In this case, all can be done with Ethernet. Buy a used Transceiver \[AAUI to RJ45 Ethernet] for about US$10 and cable the old Mac directly to your Router. Any Mac running 10.3.9 or older can share files using AppleTalk-over-Ethernet. Enable it on both ends in the Sharing or File Sharing Control Panel and the System Preferences > Sharing panel. Illustrated instructions in this article:
    http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/os9xnet_nfilesharing.html
If your old Mac OS is 7.5.3 or later, it will work pretty much as described in the article. If your oldest new Mac OS is also 10.4 or later, you will need to start at the older Mac and use the IP Address of the newer Mac to make the connection.
Case 2) Old Mac has no RJ45 Ethernet or AAUI Ethernet, only round Printer port \[AppleTalk/Localtalk port]:
In this case, you will want to get a used converter -- the same one that will allow the LaserWriter to work with the newer Macs. The "trick" is that these converters have always supported up to 8 devices -- both Macs and Printers -- for Printer Sharing and for File Sharing. The converter can be any one of:
    • Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT (NOT LS)
    • Asante AsantTalk
    • an older Mac that has both Ethernet and round printer port for AppleTalk/Localtalk and Apple's free but unsupported Ethernet Bridge software.
Connect the Ethernet side of the Converter/Bridge to your Router. Connect the AppleTalk/Localtalk side to up to eight of the AppleTalk/LocalTalk computers and printers using PhoneNet boxes and telephone cords. Remember to terminate the last open PhoneNet jack.

  • Lost Captions when Transferring from iPhoto to Aperture

I had iPhoto 6 which I used for several years to store my photos. Upon getting Aperture 3 recently, I imported the entire library of photos into Aperture so I could have them there.
Since iPhoto 6 didn't support direct transition to Aperture, I needed to import them with the method of "Folders as Projects"
This worked for the most part, however I am facing the major problem that all my captions from iPhoto are lost in Aperture.
Is there any way to do a more direct import or to have the captions retained? Is there a method that can export them first from iPhoto so that the captions are tagged with the folder?
    Please help.

As TD said... and you could upgrade to iPhoto 9 for $15 from the Mac App Store . Are your captions worth $15?
One thing to note: Upgrading your library from 2005 to the latest iPhoto won't necessarily be without issues either although iPhoto 9 has been out for awhile and most of the bugs should be worked out by now.

  • My Macbook Pro 15" has become painfully slow when transferring files to USB or my Externel HardDrive. Any ideas?

I's unsure when it started but for quite some time copying even 100-200MB files is taken 5-10 minutes. I have tried many different USB's and External HardDrives, but nothing seems to be working, no matter what USB port it is plugged into. I have researched online and have found many people with the same issue, but no one seems to have a fix. If I am in a rush to get to school it's the last thing I want to have to deal with. I am running Lion 10.7.4 on my 15" Macbook Pro.

From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support.

  • Missing Playlists when transferring itunes library to new computer

I have moved my itunes files from my old computer to my new computer. I went into Preferences to link to the new file, but the library and songs do not show up in itunes. I went through the files and added the songs manually to the library, but the playlists are not there? What did I do wrong? Also, what should my response be when the window pops up when I connect my ipod? Should I select no or yes when it asks if I should change the link?

Please check this out, it'll help you transfer everything properly:

  • Hitting a problem when transferring iPhoto library to External Hard Drive.

    Hi
I am running a 3 year old MacBook with iPhoto 08, my hard drive is nearly full mainly with photos so I have just purchased a G-Drive Hitachi 500GB external hard drive, with a view to storing my iPhoto library thus enabling me to create some space on the computer hard drive.
I did some online research and transferred my iPhoto library as follows:-
I quit iPhoto and went into my pictures folder, located by iPhoto library file and dragged it to my external hard drive, after it had copied I went back into my pictures folder and re-named the original library 'iPhoto Library.Old', I then opened iPhoto by holding down the 'alt' key and was given the prompt to choose a library to open, I selected 'iPhoto Library.Old' from the pane and my pictures loaded up.
This is when I came across a problem, I was under the impression that once the library had been transferred the the EHD in this way that the pictures/events on the EHD would remain in place. I deleted a few of my events on my computer HD, but when I checked the EHD they had vanished from there too.
No photos are lost as I have them all backed up to CD, on line albums etc, but I am puzzled as to what I am doing wrong and how I get the photos on the EHD to stay put.
My Time Machine automatic updates are off, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I seem to have hit a brick wall with this one.
    Thanks
    Ruth

    Hi Terence
I have just opened the internal iphoto library to delete some photos, without the EHD being attached, when I plug in the EHD and open the iphoto library from there the pictures that I have just deleted on the internal library have gone from the EHD. I am obviously doing something wrong but I cannot fathom out what. My internal library has a different name ie 'iPhoto Library.Old' but both internal and external libraries seem to be still acting as one.
    I hope I'm making sense ?
    Regards
    Ruth
