Do not use rotate in iPhoto!

I use iPhoto 9.3.2. I work with RAW images. When I use the rotate function of iPhoto directly on the thumbnail image, the RAW image gets deleted!!
This did not happen with previous version of iPhoto. I have lost hundreds of pictures this way. I can reproduce the bug every time. Does anyone know how I can get Apple's attention to this kind of bugs?

Exact workflow is as follows:
- I have a CF card with a number of NEF (Nikon D70 RAW images) on it.
- Connect CF card reader to Mac
- Import all new images to the iPhoto library. This will cause a number things to happen, such as:
* the NEF file is copied to the Mac harddisk (iPhoto library folder)
* a number of JPG are being made (e.g. for the thumbnail pictures, the face pictures etc)
- Now, when you go to the iPhoto library, you can rotate pictures directly from the popup menu. As soon as you do this, the NEF file (which was copied to the Mac harddisk) is removed, and less importantly, the thumbnail JPG is messed up.
- When rotating the picture from the Edit menu, this does not happen.
I can reproduce this problem every single time. I have all updates installed including latest OSX update. I was able to recover a few of my pictures because the NEF files where still on my CF card. But some of them are lost forever. I really really really urgently need to buy an external harddrive for backup
Is there some kind of screen capture tool that I could use to record this in a video?
I am not saying the problem will occur for every user. Maybe it is related to the NEF format, the size of my library (which is huge), who knows. In any case I can demonstrate this problem. In the Finder you actually see the NEF file on the disk before the rotate action. Then I rotoate and the NEF file is gone. Trust me, this is correct information. I have no interest in posting false information here. Just wanted to warn.

  • Do NOT use Dropbox for iPhoto backups - corrupted library

So after a couple of weeks of problem solving I've just been able to recover part of my 72gb iPhoto library.
My office was burgled a short while before Xmas so I was left to recover my stuff all from Dropbox which I have set to synchronise, together with iTunes. Problem is, Dropbox sees the iPhoto library in a totally different way to OSX, so when I grabbed the package, it wasn't coherent.
I've had to do a lot to try to rebuild, repair both the database and thumbnails, but there's still so many missing thumbnails etc and there appears to be an entire year missing. So I have a huge task of manually pulling images back in from the backed up (corrupted) package.
Can anyone tell me, what's the original folder? Is it Originals or Masters??
Meanwhile, how can I fix this?
Thumbnail is correct, when I click on file:
    I get this:

If all else fails and you can confirm that the Masters folder contains your  original source files you can try this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IPhoto is not using/recognizing the iPhoto library

An iPhoto message recently popped up saying that my library was currupt and that it was going to run a script to fix it. I clicked ok and then another message popped up letting me know that the script had finished running.
When I went to open up iPhoto I was meet with a pop up asking me "Which photo library do you want iPhoto to use?". No libraries are listed and when I click on "Other Library..." my iPhoto library is there, but when I clcik "Open" nothing happens. Below is a screenshot of the windows I described here.  My device is a MacBook Pro 13 Retina, iPhoto is version 9.5.1.  Any advice you can provide will be much appreciated!

When I double-click on the iPhoto library it opens up iPhoto and I have to go through the process above. Also the only way I can reach my pictures folder is through Terminal.

  • IPhoto 08 not auto-rotating photos in new library

    Hello everyone.
I just created a new iPhoto Library on one of my USB hard drives in order to keep the photos for a specific project separate from the mess of my main library. I downloaded around 450 images from my CF card as usual, and much to my dismay I found that the vertical images were not appearing vertical; in other words, iPhoto didn't automatically rotate them.
Unfortunately, I deleted the images from the card so I can't try downloading them again, but I am 101% sure that the orientation sensor and the EXIF data were right because I checked the images on the camera's display several times while shooting, and they looked fine.
I am assuming that I missed something about the new library or maybe I hit some bug. I'm pretty much sure that I have to go through these and rotate them manually as the original EXIF data has been lost (I checked it with Simple EXIF Viewer), but could someone give me a hint about what to double-check in order not to have this happen again?
    I am using iPhoto '08 version 7.1.2 (362) on OS X 10.5.1.
    Thank you very much!

    Hello,
the hard drive has a single HFS+ partition, and I've been using it with iPhoto for a while now. Even though I keep my "current" library on my iMac's internal disk, I move the libraries to the external disk when they start growing too big (ah, if only I had gotten the 500 GB disk at the time; I suppose I break the warranty if I change it myself, right?) and I've successfully accessed libraries from there.
I did eventually rotate them manually by selecting them all at once, but I found that only the vertical ones among the first 300 or so were not rotated; the last ones were rotated successfully. This is really weird.

  • I am trying to print a color photo on my MacBook Pro from iPhoto (not using Photoshop) using Epson 2200 printer, and everything I do in the Color Matching and Print Settings results in a photo with a pink cast to it. What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to print a color photo on my MacBook Pro from iPhoto (not using Photoshop) using Epson 2200 printer, and everything I do in the Color Matching and Print Settings results in a photo with a pink cast to it. What am I doing wrong?

Have you checked the ink cartridges and made sure the nozzles are clear? Are you able to print from outside of iPhoto with the correct color?
Try the following: make temporary copy of the library and do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Photo edits not showing up in iPhoto when using PSE

I have recently purchased Photoshop Elements 13 and have set iPhoto to use it as my editor. That is working, however, when I save the file, the new file does not show up in iPhoto. It does, however, show up in Organizer. Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks Larry, I don't doubt that I'm not doing it correctly, but I don't know what I am doing wrong.  I have selected PSE to be my external editor in the iPhoto preferences and when I select a photo in iPhoto to edit, it comes up in PSE. I edit the photo and select save (or click on the X in the top right corner of the image, I have tried both and gotten the same results both ways. I get a dialog box that indicates PSE is going to save the file in psd format. I have let it do that and I have also changed to JPG, neither has made any difference. I have also gone in and changed the preferences in PSE to replace the original file on the advice of help at Elements Village. It didn't change the file in iPhoto before that change and it hasn't changed it after that change either.
The file I originally was working with was in RAW format, and I read in another thread that there was no way for PSE to save the edited RAW file back into iPhoto directly, that it would need to be saved somewhere else, such as to the desktop, and then imported back into iPhoto. So, I edited a jpg file and saved it and that edited file did not show up in iPhoto either. From reading other threads, it seems to work for other people, but I don't know what I and doing wrong or what else to try. I have spent a ton of time trying to get this to work because I don't care for the PS Organizer and would prefer to use iPhoto to organize my photos and PSE and ACR to edit them, but so far I am not having any luck with it other than saving the edited file somewhere else and then importing it again into iPhoto, which is a pretty clunky way to have to do it.

  • Deleted iPhoto and now I can't reinstall it -I'm using a second hand iMac so not using the Apple ID used to register it

  • Delete fotos in iPhoto events not used in Foto Book

the problem with this issue is that there is no "indicator" in or on the pictures in the event the foto book was made from which says: this was USED in the foto book/project and this was NOT USED in the foto book/project. So, how to delete those in the event which were NOT USED?
If you invoke all the fotos of the event on the side of the foto book selection screen those you USED are flagged, the one NOT USED are unflagged, but the iPhoto does not allow at that stage to delete multiple images by using the Command click method suggested when you are viewing the event pictures.

Do you want to must remove the unplaced pictures form the book or from the library?  If it's from the library and you don't use the ratings try the following:
Bring up the unplaced photos tray, select one at a time and give it a rating (this works as long as you don't use ratings).  Then create a smart album with the criteria Rating is X.  All of the photos with that rating will be displayed.
Select them and use the key combination Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin. Then empty the trash bin.
Warning:  This will delete the photos completely from the library.  Make sure this is what you want because they'll be gone for good then.

I am using iPhoto '09 Version 8.1.2 but can not use iCloud with it. I've looked for updates in iPhoto and iLife'11 but no luck. Suggestions very welcome.

No you won't necessarily lose your photos when upgrading but it's very very unwise not to back up first. Backing up is like using a seat belt in a car. You can drive without one for years and have no issues, but if you do have a problem the outcome will be a lot worse. So, too, with back ups. And upgrading is one of those times when the risks of a problem are higher.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • IPhoto Events not used elsewhere

I have noticed that AppleTV, my iPod Classic and most other apps don't recognize Events in iPhoto. It's really annoying to look at photos on my iPod or AppleTV and just see this one huge list of photos. Why are Events not recognized outside of iPhoto? Is there a switch I can turn on somewhere?

No, there's no such switch. You can use Albums - and very quickly make Albums of your Events. Other wise let the developers know you want this feature:

I think the usual advice is to use the Rebuild command in Library Manager.

  • Why don't pictures from a slideshow made in iPhoto and then burned on to a DVD in iDVD not use the full screen?

Why don't pictures from a slideshow made in iPhoto and then burned on to a DVD in iDVD not use the full screen?

All I want to do is send my family the pictures for them to be able to see them on most dvds and use manually control.
If you want set top DVD player playback, I suggest you create a a series of slideshows IN iDVD that each contain a MAXIMUM of 99 images. Do not create the slideshow in iPhoto or iMovie.
Is there an easier way to do this, bypassing iDVD?
Some DVD players will play a disc containing jpeg images

  • Ipad2 does not change orientation. I have not used the switch for lock rotation it is used for mute

Ipad2 does not change orientation. I have not used the switch for lock rotation it is used for mute

Is there a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator ? If so, and as you've got the switch set to notification mute, then have you checked the taskbar (the function that the switch isn't set to is controlled via the taskbar instead) : double-click the home button, slide the taskbar to the right, and it's the icon far left.
If you havn't got the lock symbol at the top then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
