Do not use the Restore from Backup when upgrading

For those having issues......
Try to restore your phone as "New" and not from a backup. After you have a clean version iOS 4.0 on your phone customize your phone manually, do not use a backup. i know this can be a pain in the *** but it should fix most of the upgrade issues.
I believe many of the issues are being caused by people using backups.
For those windows user out there. Its like when you upgraded Windows to a new version. you always had glitches if you just did an upgrade vs a clean install.

i used itunes to sync my contacts, apps, music, videos, pictures. i e-mailed myself all my notes and copied the pictures in the camera to my computer. i also e-mailed myself all my bookmarks.
once everything was sync with iTunes i upgraded my apps within itunes so only the most recent versions would by put on the "new" phone.
once the phone was restored as "New" i synced all my stuff back.
I lost all my in app data and text messages by doing this method. I also lost my "favorites list" in the phone and all old voice mails.
i had to reset up my apps, setup my e-mail, retype my notes, make new bookmarks and a few other items. Once i did all of this I made a new Backup and deleted all the old backups.
If my phone breaks i know have a good 4.0 back up that has no 3.X data on it.

Icloud or itunes backup, only backs up app data, not the app itself.
so if you restore as new, then there is no app data on your phone, you start out new...

  • HT201250 When using the installation disc to start a Mac Pro that won't start; will the 'restore from backup' option erase all the data previously stored?

When starting a Macbook Pro that has quit by using the disc that came with it, will the "restore from backup" option erase all previous data stored on the machine?

As long as the backup on your external drive is fine, it will restore your Mac to exactly how it was on the date of that particular backup, all data included. I have used it before and have retained all data from the date of the backup.

  • I just got a new iPhone 6 but when I did the restore from backup of my old iPhone 4; none of my pictures were there and almost all of my calendar was missing. Can anyone help?

Hi, I just bought an iPhone 6, 64GB and had everything ready to do the "restore from backup" from my old iPhone 4 8GB. It kept stopping and I'd have to start over from the beginning. When I finally got it to do something with the help of my provider(who had walked me thru from the beginning anyway); I figured I was all set. Then I went to see my pics to use one for my lock screen and there were NO PICTURES AT ALL and only part of my calendar came over. I'm missing a lot of future appointments that I know are set up. I made sure not to wipe out my old one yet; as I will have to since I did the trade in plan; so I still have my old iPhone 4 and it has everything in it, in addition to having the backup on two computers in the house.
I also tried syncing it after the restore since things were missing, but that didn't work either.
I would appreciate any help so I can use my phone and get going with it.
    Thanks!

Did you choose the wrong back up? There should be a drop box when you go to "Restore from Back up" in iTunes and your iPhone is plugged in, on the Summary page. Choose the correct back up. If you can't find one, and you still have your device, back up your iPhone 4 again and then choose that back up. Or check for an old iCloud back up if you have one.

  • How do I transfer itunes music to my iphone 4 without using the restore from this backup function?

How do I transfer itunes music to my iphone 4 without using the restore from this backup function?  I cannot use the back up function as have been advised that therer are bugs in it and restoring it back to my phone will bring the bugs with it and phone will be back to apple again as will start playing up again.  But I need the music.  Whn I plug it in laptop and go to itunes icon it gives me 2 options:  Set up as new iphone? OR Restore from backup.
Do I pick set up as new phone?  I dont know as the guy at the genius bar told me there would be an option asking if i want to sync itunes only...but there isn't.

Set up as New and then... Re-Sync your Content from iTunes.

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

I do not understand you question/problem.
What does "not able to restore from backup because his iPod is all" means.
Also, there is no viewable photo in your post.

  • How to flush apps from iPad2 using a "Restore from backup"

When I receive an iPad back from loan (library environment) it frequently has additional apps loaded by the borrower, over and above the small set of apps that we provide when the iPad is checked out.
If we reset the iPad (Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings) and then restore from a canonical backup, the iPad is rendered "fresh" with no evidence of the previous borrower and ONLY the small set of apps that we provide.
    However,
If we simply restore from the canonical backup, without the reset, the evidence of previous use is limited to just the additional apps that the previous borrower installed. In effect, the iPad contains the union of our standard set and the previous borrower's additions. All the data, media and settings (even defaults such as iCloud and Store IDs) are removed. The iPad is "fresh" except for the additional app or apps.
The simple restore from backup is much faster than the reset+restore and would be preferred.
Manual inspection and removal of borrower-installed apps is too time consuming.
Looking for a procedure that would force the app list down to only the one in the backup...
    Any comments?

Thank you for your prompt and thoughtful comment.
The library is institutional but is not publicly funded. Our policies are not traditional, therefore.
We wished to give the early patrons the ability to experiment with apps of their own discovery that they provision using credentials that they already have or that they create for the purpose. We have no record of their credentials and they do not have the Library's credentials. We never attempt nor allow the iPads to be sync'd on our duplication station. I agree with almost everything that you are saying but:
    - we loan a "fresh" iPad that has been restored from a tightly controlled (never sync'd) backup
    - we are returned an iPad that contains the initial app set + user settings, media, bookmarks, history etc. + one or more apps that the user has installed using his own credentials
    - the iPad is connected to iTunes (on Lion) with automatic sync disabled
    - we control-click on the iPad device name and restore from backup using the virgin backup mentioned above
    - the restore takes 10 seconds or less since no new apps nor media is added
    - the resulting iPad contains no user settings nor data but does still contain the app(s) that the user added
    - if the iPad is reset to remove ALL non-firmware apps and then is restored from the same image, the users apps do not appear, just as one would expect. This takes 10-12 minutes with the app set that we currently provide. We find this burdensome for frequent use but it's perhaps necessary...
It surprises me that the users' apps survive a "Restore from Backup" process.
Unlike a traditional disk image (OS X .dmg for example) the iPad restoral "image" (~Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/) contains no binaries. It's just a manifest of XML files in a folder and describes what .ipa binaries should be loaded from the iTunes library. iTunes does not, apparently, exclude (delete the encryption key of) binaries that are not provisioned in the manifest. Everything else gets zeroed-out of the iPads but not the foreign .ipa files. Is this a feature or a bug?

  • How to restore from backup when there is always a code -50 error ?

I recently upgraded my iphone 4 from OS4 to OS5.
Everything went well until the phone prompts me to connect to itunes (the cable to itunes picture).  itunes keeps on giving an error saying restore cannot be done and the code is -50.
I'm thinking of "restoring from backup" option in itunes, but is there a possibility of the error coming out again ?  Currently I have the apps recovered, but not the contact list.

After reading your post I had a look at "man
reconstruct". I'm not clear about the "f" flag, you
suggest it, and the man page says "useful for
restoring backups" - but the example on the man page
does not use the "f" flag. I'm not sure whether I
    should / shouldn't use it.
Up to you to decide whether to trust the man page or me
Just kidding. The -f flag will make sure subfolders containing messages will be take into account as well.
    But you are saying
that if I just reconstruct the ONE mailbox then it is
only that one where I need to fix the ACLs? That is
    much better!!
Yes, just that one. (Unless your database is already broken for some reason and you need to do a full reconstruct, but you should see this in the logs)

  • HT201269 I bought a new 4GS and I'm trying to restore my apps and such. I've gone through the 'restore from backup' process twice and iTunes still wants to set up as a new phone or restore from backup. Help?

The title tells you my predicament. I can't put music and such on until I get past this screen in iTunes.

If iTunes is on the computer is giving you the option to 'Restore from backup' or 'Set up as new phone' then select 'Set up as new'
Basically, it's you telling iTunes that this is the first time this device has connected. You won't lose anything, and you'll then be able to sync.

  • IPhone will not restore from backup after upgrading to iOS4

    Hey guys,
I updated to iOS4 just fine on my iPhone 3G 16gb model. Unfortunately, what occurred after that is what's giving me a headache. Whenever I try to restore my iPhone from the backup I created, my laptop keeps freezing when it hits about 8-10% completion. It has no major problems with freezing or locking up, and I'm pretty sure that my iTunes is the problem. My phone will now no longer play my music, nor will it even display half of my custom ringtones(even though they appear on my ringtones list under my iPhone in iTunes), nor will it display any of the songs that I purchased through iTunes on my phone recently.
Most of the other features are working fine, though I have not tested everything. I still receive text messages, phone calls, and can access the internet, so it works how I absolutely need it to, but this is becoming an extremely frustrating ordeal. Please let me know if anyone has experienced something similar or knows of a solution.
    Thanks!

I can't find anything specific on that error code, but this Apple article may give you some ideas on how to fix it: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
You may have to "Restore as New" if you cannot get it to restore from a backup. You will lose your game data but that is about the extent of the effect.

  • New Tab Page - thumbnails are not using the files from cache folder, but they want a connection to their origin website.

    Hi there,
each time I visit a website, FireFox saves a thumbnail of all these sites for the "New Tab Page". Those thumbnails are cached in the 'thumbnails' Folder . That's so far ok for me.
    The problem is:
Every time if I use the "New Tab Page" (...after shutdown & reopening the browser and only with 'mousehoover' on any thumbnail) all the thumbnails on that page don't use the cached thumbnails from the local profile folder.
    This means:
Instead of using the cached thumbnail-files all(!) these thumbnails dials to their origin websites without(!) a mouseclick on any of these thumbnails (...see jpg pictures) !
I'm using the "Clear history when Firefox closes" with the following options:
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.cache - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.cookies - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.downloads - false
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.formdata - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.history - false(!)
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.offlineApps - false
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.passwords - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.sessions - true
    privacy.clearOnShutdown.siteSettings - false(!)
So, i can't believe that this homedialing of pinned and unpinned thumbnails should be a normal function.
    1. Screenshot: thumbnails in the New Tab Page
    2. Screenshot: the same thumbnails in the Cache Folder "thumbnails" (...also they are there after shutdown of Firefox)
    3. Screenshot: Dialing to the origin websites (...after restart of Firefox)
The Browser Version is Firefox ESR 31.2.0 and in the installation are no Add-ons, which are - for example - prefetching linked websites.
I would like to use the "New Tab Page" without 'homedialing', so the question is:
How can I force the thumbnails to use the cached thumbnail-files ?
    or
How can i disable the 'loading of content from their origin websites' already on mousehoover ?

There is a preload pref available that you could try to disable on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    *browser.newtab.preload = false
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Your useragent says your are running Firefox 3.6.13 -> is that true.
If not, do the following and post back your new Firefox version:
    * Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter
    * If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.
    * Filter = general.useragent.
    * Right-click the preferences that are bold, one line at a time, and select Reset.
    * Then restart Firefox
