Do older MBP's have USB bootcamp support now that current models lack optical drive?

Since the new MBP's lack an optical drive, Installing bootcamp/windows from a usb drive must be supported.  (I would hope so).  Would this support extend to older model MBP's?

Try a cleaning disc--that won't hurt and might help. I believe Best Buy and others carry these.
You might also want to shop around for an external optical drive--this might be a less expensive way to go.
I still have my original optical drive, which has been trouble free. It is a Matshita DVD-R UJ 85J with a firmware revision of FBZ8. Since yours and mine are different, the firmware revision is likely different too.
Everything else seems to be the same except for one thing--my "DVD Write" also shows "-R DL". I don't see that in yours. I think the "DL" may refer to dual layer, and I wonder if the discs that can't be read are DL discs?
Try the cleaner first--it may just be that the relevant laser is dirty.
Good luck!

How can I tell how many emails I have on my iphone now that I have installed the update?

Your current camera roll is stored in iCloud via the backup, and the photos in Photo stream are also stored in iCloud for about 4 weeks.
However, once you delete them on your iPad, they will disappear from your backup the next time it runs.
The best way to sort your issue out is to:
    1) Connect a Windows or OS X computer to Photo Stream.  This will get your current photos onto your computer.
    and/or
    2) Connect your iPad to a Windows or OS X computer through the USB cable, and sync the photos across before deleting them from your iPad. This will get photos and videos.

  • How is ENET-232/4 Supported Now that NI-Serial 14.0 has Removed Support for ENET?

Dear smarter people than me, I have been pulling my hair out trying to get my brand new ENET-232/4 units running under the lastest and greatest LabVIEW envirenment (2014).
    After finding that none of the instruction matched what I was seeing in MAX etc, I discovered the following line in the NI-Serial 14.0 driver release notes;
    Release Notes
    Removed ENET support
NI-Serial 14.0 removes support for all NI Serial ENET Interfaces (ENET-232/2, ENET-232/4, ENET-485/2, and ENET-485/4).
So my question is if NI-Serial no longer supports or configures the ENET-232/4, then what does?  At the moment I just have 5 rather exspensive boxes sitting on the shelf unable to be configured.
    Smart brains please help
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
As per the NI-Serial 14.0 Readme, as you have already discovered, support for all NI Serial ENET devices has been removed. This is a result of the NI Serial ENET devices being discontinued. As mentioned by Michel_Gauvin, the NI Serial ENET devices can be used without the presence of the NI-Serial driver on the system. Instructions for using NI Serial ENET devices via the NI-VISA driver can be found in this KnowledgeBase. As a note, the ENET device will still need to be configured on a system that has NI-Serial with ENET support. My recommendation would be to stick with NI-Serial 4.1 for ease of use and configuration if you plan on continuing to use the ENET devices.
    Michel,
Changes to your LabVIEW code could be required when moving to a 64-bit Windows operating system. One change that may be required is the "VISA resource name" input because MAX will not discover/show the NI Serial ENET device on the 64-bit OS, so if an alias was being used during development it would not be recognized when moved over.
    Best,
    Jake B.

  • Will my mac pro support 10 Optical drives?

I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro that currently has two Optical drives installed. I believe its the Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5620 “Westmere” processors. I installed a Samaung 840 Evo for the operating system and I have a 6 TB raid installed with 16gb of ram. I am going to be using it to burn dvds on location for my events. I have a high volume of customers and I really like to get orders out before the weekend is over.
My question is can I daisy chain 10 optical drives to my mac pro? How do I gauge how much it can handle?
And if you can give me a comparrison between that and the new mac pro that would be great. I know that the new model is going to be a lot faster and if my 2010 model can't support 10 drives but the new one can then it will be time to make a change!
    Thanks for your time

So there are duplicators that have multiple targets? I have a 10 set duplicator already so when I have clients purchase as groups I can duplicate but most of our orders are specific to just one customer. So I have the duplication.
My previous setup was 4-5 macbook pros all networked to a shared drive and I burned that way but our system is changing and we are putting the Mac Pro into play and so it would be easier just to have a set of drives all stacked in my road case instead of pulling the macbooks from other stations and then having to pack them up and etc. So if each drive could burn a differenct disc that would be great.
I use toast and I read somewhere that you can just duplicate it and then from there I would label all of the drives to match the toast duplicate it was running from.

  • Install windows on my MacBook Pro7,1 (Version 10.6) **doesn't have an optical drive**

I recently replaced my HDD for a 1 GB SSD. Then I took out my optical drive and installed a HDD. I wanted the extra space to store videos and pic and such. I also upgraded the RAM.
I want to use bootcamp to install windows on my macbook pro. However, when I go to Boot Camp Assistant, its says "You need an optical drive to install Windows."
***I removed my optical drive and now have a HDD. I want to use a USB.***
SO, after I click continue... it gives me two options. Option 1 says Download the Windows support software for this Mac. Option 2 says I have the Mac OS X installation disc that came with my Mac or I have already downloaded the Windows support software for this Mac to a CD, DVD, or external disk.
My question is, HOW DO I INSTALL WINDOWS on my Macbook pro?
do I have to have an optical drive? that means, I have to take out my HDD and put my optical drive back in. Or can I just use a USB? if so , HOW?
Can I install Windows (7, 8.1) to a USB? Or download the Windows support software to a USB? and click on Boot Camp Assistant and click option 2? so when it asks me to put in the CD, I can just plug in the USB and install the Windows support software? and then put the codes in to install windows?
I hope I'm making sense. I saw several videos on Youtube and i just need some help.
    Thank You.

So basically, I have trying to  install windows on my mbp using a usb drive. However bootcamp wont allow  me to do so since I have a optical drive on the laptop. I have been  searching for a long time and eventually came across this solution and I  would like to share this so u guys dont have to google all over the  place again .
The solutions given before by changing info.plist is correct except  that now Bootcamp crashes everytime you change it in OSX 10.9.
    Full solution:
    1. Add your Boot Rom Version(from system info) under DARequiredROMVersions.
    2. Add Model Identifier(from system info) under PreUSBBootSupportedModels
    3. Delete "Pre" from "PreUSBBootSupportedModels", so you have "USBBootSupportedModels"
The first 3 steps are same as before and if its not clear you can easily google solutions with screenshots.
The  next step is only for OSX 10.9, as it employs some kind of code  signature to prevent you from changing info.plist and cause bootcamp to  crash.
    4. Open your terminal, use the following command
    sudo codesign -fs - /Applications/Utilities/Boot\ Camp\ Assistant.app
Sudo  means using administrator privilege and u need to enter your mac  password. And the command resigns the bootcamp application so that it  runs with the new info.plist file and not crash.
    5. Continue on with your installation....
    Cheers.
P.S. back up info.plist before u change anything.

  • IMac display going bad, can I connect a MBP to it in some way so that I can transfer files?

I need to get some files off of an old iMac. This iMac is model that has the white half-round base that looks sort of like a lamp.
(It looks like this, not sure if its this exact model or a newer one: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac_800_17_fp.html)
The display is very garbled, I can only read about half of the scene and this part that I can read is distorted.
I've got a 2006 MBP and a new 2012 MBP that I can use to connect to it. Can I connect either of these in some way (firewire or ethernet or some other way) so that I can see it's HD on my MBP and copy the files over?
Thanks in advance to all who answer...  And if there is a better forum to ask this question in, somebody please let me know.

The older MBP I have has firewire 400. It's a core 2 duo, I think 2006 was the year it was made.
So, I should be able to connect my older MBP and the iMac in target disk mode and see the iMac's HD on my MBP's screen. This is what I hope can be done becuase I can't really see much on the iMac's screen.
Thanks for the TDM link and the UltraATA to USB adapter suggestion.

  • We just bought our boys iPad minis.  We have a "family ipad" now with lots of music and apps the boys love.  Will syncing them to icloud cause a nightmare with calendars, music, and emails etc being shared?

We just bought our children 2 ipad minis.  We have a "family ipad" now that contains lots of their apps, music, books etc.  I am afraid to connect the minis to icloud for fear they will also sync our calendars, email, etc.  Does anyone have experience with a family using icloud and do you recommend starting over with everyone having their own account or merging the family?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
To begin with, I would like to try to explain Apple's confusing nomenclature in regard to iCloud.
Apple have called the whole cloud thing iCloud, there are a number of features under the iCloud umbrella, some of which require their own login. iTunes is one of these, another is what Apple have unfortunately also called iCloud too.
You can use the same Apple ID (account) to login to both iCloud and iTunes, but you don't need to and often users will login to each service using a different ID.
The part that you need to remember is that the services available when you log into iCloud are completely different and unrelated to those when you log in to iTunes. Your iCloud login enables mail, contacts, calendars, find my phone, Back to My Mac, Documents & Data sharing and photostream, it does not affect any of your iTunes services.

  • USB faster then on older MBPs?

i have read reviews which claim that the USB connection on the new style MBPs is quite a bit faster then on the older style MBPs....they say it is almost (within 5%) of FW400 speed....which is great....my question is if this is due to hard ware or software?
the usb connections on (pretty much) all older macs were always lagging way behind what USB had to offer....which was often blamed on drivers....what is different with the new MBPs and is there a chance that the older ones will get a software update to fix this (long overdue anyway)...

I tested USB 2.0 performance with the older MacBook Pro 2.4 and a Mac mini 1.6GHz. As long as Leopard is installed the USB 2.0 performance is 28MB/sec write and 34MB/sec read. FireWire 400 performance is 31MB/sec write and 38MB/sec read.
If 10.4 Tiger is installed USB 2.0 disk performance drops to 18MB/sec read/write. It appears that previous versions of Mac OS X (10.4) were not optimized for the Intel USB 2.0 hardware. As long as Leopard is installed higher USB performance is available. I wondered if this may have been added with 10.5.5. However, I found moving back to 10.5.2 provided the same higher performance USB 2.0 benchmarks. Apple seems to have kept quiet about the improved USB 2.0 performance with Leopard. As a result, it was not reported until recently.
    Have fun!

  • What is the best USB 3.0 Expresscard 34 card available for older MBPs?

Title says it all. I'm looking to buy some new external hard drives, preferably ones with USB 3.0, but I'm going to need an Expresscard to plug into my MacBook Pro to fully utilize the new and improved speeds. I've seen a couple so far but they didn't seem to offer support for OS X, which as you can imagine, would be problematic. Has anyone had any experience with this and if so, is there a recommended card that I should look into? Much appreciated.

If such a card were available and worth having on a Mac, I except that Other World Computing would stock it. I just looked at their Express34 offerings and they do not show any.
The fastest current option is probably eSATA; several such cards are shown here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/express34
They support up to 3G/sec. I recently bought a Western Digital MyBook Mac Edition and it have USB 2.0, FireWire 800, and eSATA interfaces. That and an eSATA card would be about as fast as you can get today.
A Wikipedia article on USB 3.0 says this:
A new major feature is the "SuperSpeed" bus, which provides a fourth transfer mode at 5.0 Gbit/s. The raw throughput is 4 Gbit/s, and the specification considers it reasonable to achieve 3.2 Gbit/s (0.4 GByte/s or 400 MByte/s), or more, after protocol overhead.
As the "reasonable" expectation is just over 3G/sec, eSATA could be pretty close and is something you can implement today.
