Do photos saved on iPhoto use up computer memory?

Do the photos I have saved in iPhoto and MyPhotoStream use up the memory on my macbook or are they all just saved online? I'm wondering because I want to delete photos on my other iOS devices after syncing all of them onto just my macbook. But I won't do this if placing all my photos on my macbook will use up computer memory.

A few things
1 - terms - memory and disk storage are different things - no photos take up memory - sme take up disk storage - and you must always have a min of 10GB of free disk storage for the system to operate well
2- All photos saved in iPhoto use disk space - BUT MyPhotoStream photos are not saved in iPhoto unless you choose to do so - that is set in the iPhoto preferences - if you do not want to save photos on your Mac then turn of the preference to automatically import them - it you wan them saved on your Mac turn that option on and they will be imported and take disk space
3 - if you do not import the photos into iPhoto (which uses disk space)  then when you delete them from any IOS device they will be gone form all devices

When I send a photo directly from iPhoto using the Mail app on my iMac, the wrong photo appears on my iPad2 Mail app.  However the correct photo shows if I log into gmail on the iPad2.  I assume there is a glitch with my "Mail" app on the iPad2?  Any suggestions for getting the correct photo to show on iPad2?

Update:  I was able to have the correct photo show in my email as received on my iPad2 by changing a setting on my IMac prior to sending the photo on the email.
On the iMac, I went into iPhoto > Preferences > Email photos using > Mail (in lieu of "iPhoto").  This seems to have corrected the issue.  I'm not sure why.  Now the correct photo shows up when received on my iPad2.

  • How can I transfer photos saved in iPhoto format to a pc?

I got a CD with photos that were saved in iPhoto format. I have a PC and want to change the iPhoto format into something my PC can read and then copy the photos onto another CD in .bmp or some other format. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There's no such thing as an "iPhoto format". iPhoto stores the pics in whatever format your camera took them - in most cases that will be bog standard jpegs. These can be viewed on any system.

I have saved photos in Iphoto and have burned them to a disk.  I want to send the disk to a friend who is a PC user and doesn't have IPhoto.  She has Picassa.  Will she be able to open and edit the photos from my disk on her PC in Picassa?

Thanks.  That's a great relief.  Do you know if the photos will be correctly formated or will they change in Picassa?

  • Why does my printer say it's out of paper when I try to print a photo saved in folders on my compute

Until recently my printer would print pictures saved up on my computer.  All of a sudden my HP Photosmart C6380 All-in-One won't print.  The photo tray goes in like it should, full of paper, but in a few seconds comes back out and the screen as well as the printer says that it is out of paper.  What can I do to fix this problem.

Hi - Try following the steps in this document.  It should help resolve the issue.

  • Titles of photo's in iPhoto using iPad??

using iPhoto at my MacBook I gave my photo's a title, where are the titels if I open them at my iPad (also using iPhoto)?
Via itunes i synchronized them, but how can I see or import the titles?

    probably
What size screen do you have?
However the what size are the photos question pertains to pixel dimensions of the photos - not inches - please provide those dimensions (in iPhoto select a photo and show info)
Look on your camera menu and see what resolution you are taking the photos at
Less that 1 MB is pretty small today - a roughly roughly 1200 x 900 image - althought that will display up to 16"x 12" on a screen

  • Re problem backing up all photos saved in Iphoto

    Hello
I have recently added an extrenal hard drive to use with time machine so I can back up my whole Mac, but most importantly photos.
I seem to have done this sucessfully but when I check I cannot seem to find the photos. They are always in Iphoto but why cant I find them when opening time machine or the ext hard drive
    pls help
    Jon

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Your post isn't exactly clear, but if you mean you cannot browse the backups of your photos when you enter Time Machine from your desktop or a Finder window, that's correct.
iPhoto (and a couple of others) have special handing in Time Machine. See #15 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • HT4906 will my photos stay in iPhoto on my computer if I back them up to iCloud?

if i back up my photos from iPhoto to iCloud, will they still remain on my machine within iPhoto?

iCloud is not a backup - it is for sharing and syncing
Photos that have been imported to iPhoto are only deleted when you delete then in iPhoto
I am not at all clear on what you want to do or what you are concerned about

  • Can't view photos saved on cd from iPhoto 06 in iPhoto 08

When I insert a cd with photos saved from iphoto 06, iphoto 08 opens but the disc wont load in the application and just keeps "spinning" in the internal drive. Have tried it with different cds with iphoto 06 pictures with same result. Any ideas? (The drive does work properly with other discs for other apps.)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You did burn those disks with iPhoto's Share->Burn menu option, right? Are you able to view the disks on the desktop via the Finder? If not and you have access to another computer, try them there. It they can't be opened by another computer then the disks have been damaged somehow or the burning was corrupted.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to edit photo size in Iphoto

    Hi Guys,
Im trying to find a way to reduce the size of a photo so I can post it on a message board. I cant find where to do this! I tried "cropping" the photo but I dont want to cut the photo I just want to reduce the size from 2048 x 1536 to 800 x 600 (pixels). Is there a way to reduce by percentages like in Windows??? Thanks for the help Im still new to my Imac...Im going to assume there is a way to do this!!!
    Dr. Pee

You'll have to export the photo out of iPhoto using the File->Export->File Export menu option which will let you select the pixel dimension and the quality/compression level of the new file.

  • Unable to share from iphoto using Messages....

I have upgraded to Mavericks and have noticed that I can't share a photo directly from iphoto using Messages. Anyone else have this problem? I got an error message once that said something like "couldn't communicate with helper application". Usually when I try to share a photo I don't get an error message, nothing happens at all. Any help would be much appeciated.

I only started experiencing this problem (iPhoto Couldn't communicate with helper application) after upgrading to version 10.10 and haven't been able (yet) to find a solution or work-around to this issue. Anyone???

  • I was editing photos in my iphotos and it says Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable on me.  I shut down my computer and when I restarted I can not access my photos, it keeps giving me

I was editing photos in my iphotos and it froze on me.  So I shut down my computer and when I restarted I now can not access them.  It says Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.  What can I do to fix this?

What you're describing is the Finder window for your external hard drive.  When you're in iPhoto and try to edit a photo what happens?
Are you saying that the photos for your iPhoto library are located on the external HD while your library is in the Pictures folder on the boot drive? That would indicate a referenced library.  You can check to see if you're running a referenced library by checking the Advanced Preference pane in iPhoto:
So based one the Advanced preference pane in iPhoto what type of library are you running. Where is the library itself located?  It should look like this:
By default it should be located in your Users/Home/Pictures folder. However, it could be run on an external HD.

  • My iphone syncs with everything but iphoto. It used to but has now stopped. I cannot get the photos from my phone to my computer. any ideas?

My iphone syncs with everything except iphoto.
It used to be able to do it, but has now stopped.
I'm trying to sync photos so I can upgrade my phone, and keep all my photos taken with my old phone.
But I cannot get the photos from my phone to my computer because when I link my phone to my mac iphoto doesn't recognise it at all.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Lots of folks fix these kinds of issues with a simple restart of the phone. Others require a Reset of the phone.
