Do's + don'ts of wireless

Using Win XP/Bootcamp/Tiger OS and wireless router-exposure to virus/malware?
If you use XP and a wireless router-how do you avoid any kind of malware UNless you have a security setup?
IF you NEVER go-online with XP(using a wireless router)-how do you avoid the computer just connecting anyhow?
I use XP thru Bootcamp on my I-Mac for one program;my wife wants to get a wireless router to use her XP laptop.
She wants the router to avoid the constant resets going from my Mac to her (company) PC?

Hi all
WRT working off a server, this is something I've always admonished as a huge thing to avoid. I've always used the analogy of working in my kitchen and preparing a recipe. Your captivate project and all the ingredients are stored in your local C drive which is similar to your fridge and pantry, Need to add an image? (egg) As long as your project is on the C drive, it's similar to opening the fridge and grabbing an egg. As long as there is an egg in the fridge, no problem. Instant access. But nothing says you MUST work this way, Sure, I can just go to the store any time I need an egg. But I have to stop what I'm doing, get in the vehicle, drive to the store, purchase the egg, drive back and finally I can use the egg. And to me, that's EXACTLY what it's like when you work with your project on a server.
My recommendation is always to keep the project on your local drive and periodically make backup copies of the project on a server for safekeeping.
Just to note that this is really more of a common thing among many applications. Some apps are more sensitive to where files are placed than others, but it's a characteristic shared by many.
Cheers... Rick

  • "bluetooth not available" but I don't have wireless devices & don't need it

don't have wireless devices yet can't do icq or open some files or games as it says "bluetooth module not found" THERE NEVER WAS A MODULE ON MY COMPUTER. From what i have been reading, one of the updates tells you bluetooth is not found, but since I never had it and don't want it, I see no reason why I should "buy it anyway" (suggested) or take my computer in to the Apple store and likely have to pay to have a problem fixed they caused. Any help, suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for replying so quickly Dean!
    Sorry my mistake. It reads:
    NO BLUETOOTH HARDWARE FOUND
In order to use this application, you must have a Bluetooth module. Please verify that your Bluetooth hardware is properly attached to the computer.
This message comes up when I try to execute "icq5_setup.exe", when I try to open downloaded games, some of which are "_Setup-dm.exe", others are "Setup-dm.exe", "-dm.exe" and "Demo.dmg".
The issue is this: I have no wireless devices and have no plans of obtaining any. It would appear my computer did not have Bluetooth installed when it was new. (when I got it) One day my computer was working fine, then for no discernable reason this message would come up and stop me from opening setups and new games. How do I tell my computer that I don't have any wireless devices and these are what they are? It seems to be confused at what task it is being asked to perform. It seems redundant to have to buy a module to fix the problem. Thanks.

  • Don't Understand Wireless connection

If anyone can give me expert advice it would be greatly appreciated. I just received my new macbook but i don't know how to connect to the internet wirelessly? Do i need to buy an airport express or w/e it is? I connected to the internet by using my home computer's DSL Modem and connecting it to the macbook. But how do i connect wirelessly? THank you for your help.

Just to clarify, you don't have to buy an 802.11g router; an 802.11b router will also work..... although, buying anything that is solely 802.11b nowadays is pointless, as 802.11g equipment is just as accessible and closely priced.
In fact, it's those people out there that buy equipment (mainly the wireless NICs) that's only 802.11b compatible that hurt the progress of wireless technology, i.e., 802.11g being prominent. If 802.11b clients connect to 802.11g access points, they significantly lower the amount of bandwidth available to other clients... FYI.

  • Dear Steve, will anything be done about this wireless connectivity issue?

    This is no fun whatsoever....

P.S. I was thinking lately, why, after spending so much money, should I spend several days already, in agregate, trying to understand the issue and how it should be resolved? Have I not paid for not having such problems?

    Here is a lot more:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/wirelessnetworking/topic4035.html
Highly interesting is the post of J.Exby which i reproduce here:
For months I've not been alone in holding to the notion that the airport client software on Mac OS X 10.4.x has been problematic and unstable in certain (noisy, crowded, channel overlapped) wireless environments. Issues littered around the Internet Mac forums include problems of networks appearing, then disappearing. This is a difficult problem to pin down, given the difficulty of reproducing the conditions that might cause wireless network dropouts.
A major symptom of the problem was seeing the constant messages of:
"An error occurred joining the AirPort network" (Try Again) (Cancel)
when attempting to connect to a wireless network, despite that network being seen, having correct security settings, etc.
Various temporary fixes/ideas floated around the mac community have included:
    - reseting pram, nvram and PMU
    - installing 10.4 from scratch, instead of 10.3 to 10.4 upgrade process
    - Repairing permissions, run Combo updaters, etc
    - putting system to sleep or reboot for temporary connection fix
    - applying AirPort 2005-001 patch (or not)
    - upgrading (or downgrading!) AirPort basestation firmware
    - changing AirPort channels
    - enabled (or disabling) Interference Robustness
    - disabling Bluetooth and BT peripherals
    - removing WEP/WPA passwords out of Keychain
    - running Keychain First Aid on user/login keychains
    - buying new AirPort extreme cards
    - replacing AirPort base stations with other vendor hardware, etc.
With the stability of our Windows XP clients now (after driver updates) and the change from Apple base stations to Belkin Wireless Pre-N Router having no appreciable benefit for our Mac notebooks, the OS X AirPort client software suspicions only grew.
    During troubleshooting I always have
    Applications--->Utilities--->Console
    and
    iStumbler (96)
running, and I watch output as wireless scans are performed.
From the Terminal I also run:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport -s
    and usually see constant
    AirPortScanner WirelessScan error -2013261821 airpInternalErr
    messages.
After two days of testing (and fixing?) I am even more convinced there are bugs in the powerpc 10.4.x AirPort Extreme Framework!
    This is what I found:
    Environment at our office:
    - wireless Network A (802.11g channel 1, WPA personal)
    - wireless Network B (802.11b channel 6, WEP 40bit ascii)
    - wireless Network C (802.11g channel 11, WPA personal)
(WAR-marching around our office exterior shows at least 12 outside wireless networks found at various signal strengths!)
    Test systems used:
    - iBook G4 (10.3.x and 10.4.5)
    - Powerbook G4 (10.4.5)
    - Intel iMac (10.4.5)
Primary symptom on iBook: networks not displaying long enough under the AirPort icon/menu (or Internet Connect) to connect to ANY network reliably! Perhaps connect to Network A intermittently, never even see Network C.
iStumbler showing some networks respond to poll, then immediately stagnate/disappear.
Primary symptom on Powerbook: stable connections to Network C most times, difficulty "switching" to Network B or A once moving closer to source. Usually stable "seeing" networks via AirPort menu icon, but still have occasional dropouts (due to fluctuating signal strength or interference?).
Primary symptom on Intel iMac: NO PROBLEMS! Can connect to (and steadily "see") all valid Networks A, B, C !
iStumbler constantly polls all available networks, with no dropouts.
    Steps taken:
    1. Wipe iBook hard drive, install 10.3 from dvd. AirPort signals unreliable.
1a. Perform all 10.3.x Software updates, Repair Permissions, reboot. AirPort still unreliable.
    2. Reset PRAM, nvram, PMU. no improvements.
    3. Reseat AirPort Extreme card, ensure antenna is firmly plugged in. AirPort still unreliable.
    4. Wipe iBook, install 10.4.3 "fresh" from Full retail version DVD. AirPort still unreliable.
4a. Perform all 10.4.5 Software (combo) updates, Repair Permissions, reboot. AirPort still unreliable.
    5. Hold down the Option key, and click on the AirPort icon in the menu bar.
    select About AirPort...
pay particular attention to each system showing:
    iBook: AirPort Framework 421.13.0
    powerbook: AirPort Framework 421.13.0
    intel iMac: AirPort Framework 426.1.0
Aha! A big difference with the AirPort Framework component version on the Intel iMac!
    6. So, using the Terminal let's get this newer Apple80211.framework onto the iBook.
    First on the intel iMac:
    cd /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
    sudo tar cf ~/intelApple80211frame.tar Apple80211.framework
Copy this intelApple80211frame.tar file onto a USB thumb drive, CDR, iPod, scp, etc. to copy it onto the iBook (home directory).
    7. With the tar file copied into the home area on the iBook, turn off iBook's AirPort via the menubar icon.
    Now launch Terminal and:
    mkdir backup-framework
    cd /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks
    sudo mv Apple80211.framework ~/backup-framework/
    sudo tar xvpf ~/intelApple80211frame.tar
Launch Disk Utility, Repair Permissions on boot drive.
    Reboot iBook.
    8. Turn Airport on via the menubar icon.
iBook now has HUGE improvements in wireless connectivity! It can "see" all Networks A, B, C reliably and can connect to any of them when in range (having enough signal strength). Switching between networks is successful 90% of the time. Occasional message of:
"An error occurred joining the AirPort network (Try Again) (Cancel)"
usually works after clicking (Try Again), whereas before Try Again almost always failed.
I am unsure how this newer Apple80211.framework will affect future Software Updates on the iBook, but frankly I could care less now that it's able to access all of our wireless networks!
I am unsure if this is the magic-bullet solution for a majority of people, but I'm stunned that Apple appears to be providing new and improved Apple80211.framework software with the intel iMacs, but many of us have been fighting AirPort problems on PowerPC platforms for months!
Come on Apple, OS X 10.4.5 should contain the SAME software component versions for ALL CPU platforms!

  • Win 7 laptop and Deskjet 6980 Printer don't connect wirelessly

    Hi,
I installed the Windows driver for the HP 6980 printer. The printer shows as being "offline" in Windows control panel. The printer network light and wireless status light are on. I ran the HP Home network Diagnostic Utility and it tells me:
    1. HP software required to connect to the printer is not installed
and then from the "advanced" tab it tells me further that
    2. The HP Service SLP is not installed
    3. HP service hpqcxs08 is not installed
    4. HP service device discovery is not installed
So, how do I get these things installed?? Where do I get them?
Is this really the problem or is there something else going on?
I have Verizon FIOS and an Actiontec router. Do I need to give the printer a static IP address (as suggested by the HP install manual)??
    Any suggestions/advice much appreciated.

    Hi,
Is the printer connected to your wireless network?
A solid blue light indicate a proper connection.
If it is blinking it means the printer is disconnected from your network, temporary plug a USB and go to Applications > Hewlett-Packard > Device Utilities. Follow the HP Setup Assistant to reconfigure the wireless connection.
If the printer appear as connected please clarify your router brand and model in order to better understand the problem.

  • Don't need wireless, except to play tunes

Hi. My brother bought an Airport Express simply to play airtunes. He would like to setup the following
cable modem --- Mac mini >>>> Airport Express ---- stereo
When he opens up Airport Utility it can't find the Airport Express. Is there anything basic we have to do to enable his Mac mini to act as the base station to the Airport Express?
I helped a friend to do the exact same setup about eight months back (except it was using the previous model Airport Express) but for the life of me can't remember how to do it!
Message was edited by: Richard Tench

This is complicated because the Mac mini has to act as a base station but yet it has to configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join it's network as a wireless client.
It would be much better if your brother bought an inexpensive wireless router and used that instead of his Mac mini as that base station.
To configure the Mac mini to act as a base station, go to System Preferences->Sharing preference pane and enable Internet sharing from Ethernet to AirPort.
You will want to then configure the AX to join the Mac mini's network as a wireless client.
You may need to reset the AX and you may even need to temporarily connect the AX via Ethernet to the Mac mini to configure the AX.

  • Keyboards don't works, wireless or wired. We can't login, can't change settings

first it was the wireless, only few keys seem to work. Then we tought it was an issues with the keyboard so we bought a USB one, Apple keyboard. And we encounter the same problem. We can't login into the system, I understand the keyboard mouse-mode maybe active, but we can change it now.
We did try to powerdown and unplug for 15 seconds then reconnect and wait 5 then power up. Also the other resets FLASH or what ever is called, the one with the pressing the four keys, command-option-R-P or something like that.  The thing that is frustrating is that if we can't login so we can't change any setting. No, we can't get in via the guest account. So I am not sure what we can do now.

It is an iMac with Intel CPU and I think it is running 10.6, we got it new in late 2011 (so perhaps 10.7?). It is my daugther's and she is on the East Coast so I am helping her remotly (from CA), which makes it even more frustrating!   Klaus1, tanks for the reply!

  • All Done with SB Wireless - Refuses to Work Anym

Time to throw this thing away!!! I have fought with it for way too long and now it wont work at all... it completely refuses to connect to ANY PC that I use to run the server software....
I have verified that the network config is good and it definitely gets an IP address from the router, but after that it just sits there and has that one green light blinking to show no connectivity...
Any ideas B4 it becomes trash?
    Tony.

At this time only HP has come out with printers that support AirPrint:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
They also have an app for some of their other printers:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hp-iprint-photo-3-0/id299531647?mt=8
It's possible other printer manufacturers may provide updates to their printers to make them AirPrint capable, but for now, the choice is pretty much limited to HP printers for printing directly to the printer, unless there's a third-party app offering other options. You can also print through your computer; there are threads in the forums which detail options depending on your computer OS.
    Regards.

  • How Do I Setup a Wireless Network in my home for 3 Mac's and 2 PC's

Ok..... I live with 5 people and we all have computers. I'm looking to setup a Wireless Network in our house that would allow all of us to access the Internet from our various rooms. Currently we have 3 MAC (a G5 Desktop, a regular Desktop, and a Powergook G4 with airport extreme), and 2 Window's based PC Laptops. So far everyone is using DSL, with the exception of myself. I sit in the back yard accessing the neighbors wireless network. That ***** and I feel like I'm stealing.
How would I go about setting up a Wireless network for all of these computers, and what equipment would I need to accomplish this?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

First thing you need is a wireless router. You mentioned Airport Extreme---not sure if you are speaking about the card in the PB, or an actual router. Bottom line is that you need a wireless router. Airports will work with Windows, and Netgear is another good option as they are Mac friendly. Then, any computers that don't have wireless card will need to have one--unless you connect them directly with an ethernet cable. Get the IP addresses of all of the computers on the network. In Windows, go to Start-My Network Places-View Network Connections, then highlight the LAN that is displayed. With it highlighted, go to the "details" window and open the drop down menu if it is not open already. Write down the IP address. Then, go to the Macs you have, click on Finder--Go--Connect to server. Type in the IP address with smb:// in front and / at the end--will look something like this smb://192.xxx.x.xx/ Then select connect. Make sure you know the username and passwords of the computers as it will ask for these. To share the files from the Mac to the Windows, just follow these directions: You can set up your Mac so that you can share files with Windows computer users.
To allow Windows users to connect to your computer, you need to turn on Windows Sharing. When you turn on Windows Sharing, Mac OS X uses the Samba server software to provide SMB/CIFS file services.
You also need to give the Windows users the network address of your computer, and a user name and password of a user account on your computer.
Open System Preferences and click Sharing and, if necessary, click Services.
Select Windows Sharing in the list, then click Start.
Click Accounts and select the name of the user account that will share files. Enter the password for that user.
Look below the services list for your computer's network address. Give this address to Windows users.
You can provide users with the user name and password of any account on your computer. To help keep your computer secure, you may want to create a special account for Windows users in Accounts preferences.
Because passwords of the user accounts for Windows are stored insecurely, turn off the account when it is not being used. Before you turn off Windows Sharing, turn off all the accounts you enabled. Otherwise, the passwords are still stored insecurely.
If you want to use a user account that existed before you installed Mac OS X Panther, you may need to reset the password for the account using Accounts preferences.
Any of this info can also be found in the help files in the Finder. Hope this helps.

  • T430s - [Solved?] Wireless hardware is not bound to transport driver (Centrino 6205, Win7x64)

    Hello,
after clean install of my new T430s using System Update everything worked quite well, except for terrible DPC latency when loading web pages (crapping sound). Therefore I changed LAN driver to 11.10.84.0 from Lenovo (83rw15ww) and latencies went down (this driver has been recommended in some online forum).
Few days later I was on WiFi and latency spiked up again, but this time all the time above 8000µs - even when idle. I started to play with devices in Device Manager and ultimately reinstalled WiFi driver to Lenovo's 15.6.1, then Intel's 15.8.0. The most recommended driver from HP I was unable to install, so no harm there
Not sure when, but somewhere since this point I don't see wireless networks any more. Driver is fine (no yellow ? or !), wireless card is fine (replaced by spare one from my "HW guy"), all drivers has been reinstalled MANY times. When I try to add WLAN manually, Win7 says "Unexpected Error". Diagnostic tool from Intel says "Wireless hardware is not bound to transport driver". In Fn+F5 I see WiFi as off and I can't turn it on (unlike Bluetooth, which works well). Windows Diagnostics says there's an issue with a driver (sorry if I don't use exact words, my Win7 is not EN). I don't see this card anywhere in "ipconfig". There's no difference in diagnostics whether the wireless switch is on or off.
I read almost everything I was able to google about similar issues. I tried various drivers from both Lenovo (manual download from Lenovo website as well as using System Update) and Intel, both with and without Access Connections. I tried to remove the device from Device Manager and let Windows to find it again. I reinstalled LAN driver, tried to update BIOS (was already updated), tried to reset various stuff using "netsh" command, deleted Intel/Wireless dir in [username]/AppData, all this with/without reboots in between. Tried to play with card settings (in Device Manager), with power settings (both Windows and Power Manager), with on/off switch on a side of the laptop. I tried System Restore, which ended by error for all meaningful points. Nothing. All this on 3 different WLAN networks (2.4 GHz).
My last thought is to reinstall Windows from scratch, but it takes me at least 2 whole days to set everything up as I use a boatload of different work stuff for different customers.
My current WiFi driver, according to Driver tab in Device Manager for Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205, is 15.4.1.1 from January 23, 2013 (thru System Update). The more current one from Intel is 15.7.0.3 from April 18, 2013.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions, tips or help.
    EDIT
Just for the heck of it I switched wireless ON at home and suddenly my home WiFi network appeared in Win7 WiFi management (no AC). The last driver I installed was thru System Update, twice. Never restarted immediately, always after a while.
So I ran System Update again and it offered me available driver for WiFi (again!) and Access Connections. The online utility from Intel also offered me available drivers. I still have WiFi driver 15.4.1.1 (23.1.2013). To be honest I'm little affraid to update one or the other, as I did it so MANY times in past 30 hours with no effect.
The only difference I noticed is a new wireless device was available - Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. It may be because of my Checkpoint Endpoint Security VPN software, but last time I saw this adapter was just before I lost all the wireless networks.
As much as I'm relieved it's working again, as a programmer I'm not happy about it, because I don't know WHY it's working now, when I didn't do anything for it since my last try. I only kept the wireless switch off for a fair amount of time.
Oh, and DPC latency stays below 300µs (up to 500µs is OK).

    hey smarmytime,
    let me get this right
laptop+router+modem (via cable) = connection working fine
laptop+modem (via cable) = connection goes wonky
laptop+wireless = works halfway then poofs
The wireless of yours comes from a Router+Wifi or is it coming from a Modem+Wifi set ?
If it's coming from a Modem+Wifi set, then try the following.
    1- turn off wireless
2- reset modem to factory setting (make sure wireless is off)
3- key in the necessary info to make a connection.
    4. switch wifi off on laptop
    5. connect laptop to modem via cable.
Does it connect ? Does it go poof halfway?
After that, turn on the wireless for both modem and laptop, try connecting again. Does it connect ? Does it go poof halfway?

  • How to tell if HP L7580 All In One printer is wireless ready or not

    Hi -
How do I tell if my particular printer is capable of supporting wireless? And if it is, whether it has a wireless card already installed? And then how do I activate it?
I clicked on set-up until I got to the "Network" option, and clicked -ok-, but there is no wireless option. Does that mean I don't have wireless capability at all, or that maybe I never installed wireless at somepoint in set up. I don't have a setup disc for Windows 7. I just have the ones for XP, 2000 and Vista (yep, I've had the printer for a while!)
    Thanks for the help!
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
The HP Officejet Pro L5780 is not a wireless printer, it is a USB and a wireld network printer.
You may find its specificatiosn below:

You may connect it to your router using an ethernet cable, then you may install it on your wirelessly connected computer.
You may download the Windows 7 software from the following link:
