DO'S & DONT DO'S with new Nokia N900

Hope somebody helps.
Thanks

Might also be sensible to adopt a policy of damage limitation as now deemed unrepairable under warranty with view especially to fragility of Micro USB connector:
1) Consider not charging via micro USB but swap with battery charged in 5230
2) Send all files to N900 by SFTP Client to avoid micro USB usage.
3) Flatten two lugs on CA-101D cable to make it easier to remove from device if USB connection ever needed for flashing.
4) Not renew aftermarket screen protector if applied as force required to remove can lead to screen separation.

  • Brand new Nokia N900 ceases just after half a day ...

I recieved the new Nokia N900 as an upgrade. It crashed few time opening emails, however restarted automatically. Later on it crashed on ovi map (pre installed). I tried rebooting after taking the taking the battery out and putting it back in - no joy! I tried startgin without the sim card -still the same problem - it starts with the Nokia banner and then 5 flashing dots... that's it.
I have used Nokia for over 10 years, I never experienced this from Nokia.
I think N900 is still 'Work in Progress', am not sure if it is fully tested yet!!

    you need this thread!

This is a known problem.. And I'll be brief here since there are lots of posts about it..
A bug in the firmware causes some devices to reboot.. Your's is an unluck one.. There is a permanent fix in an up and coming firmware release (not the one released today.. but soon) but in the mean time we have a work around..
you have two problems.. first getting your device booting..
Each time your device randomly rebooted itself, it increased a counter.. when this counter reached its upper limit (17 reboots) the device will STOP booting.. as yours has.. To reset this limit you need to manually restart your phone.. use the power button to turn it off.. use the power button to turn it on and the counter goes back to zero..
problem is, your device has already reached the limit so we need to trick it into going back to zero..
The easiest option may not work for you.. but it is fairly simple..
Take the battery out.. plug your phone into your computer.. put the battery back in.. allow the phone to boot..
If that doesn't work, you'll need to use the longer process detailed in the link above.. Read the first post carefully and see the section:
REPAIRING A DEVICE THAT NO LONGER BOOTS
If your device won't boot and won't respond to flasher.. the battery could be flat.. you MUST charge the battery to get your device booting. To do this you'll need to find someone with a Nokia N900, 5800 or 5230 handset since they all use the same battery.. If you device won't boot, it won't charge..
Ok, assuming these instructions have helped your device boot, you need to implement the patch to stop it rebooting..
Open this URL in your phone
    http://chris.intrepid.cx/N900/fix
Click and INSTALL the first link.. when you click the first link select open..you'll be taken to app manager and you must proceed with the install
Go back to the browser and click and SAVE the second link.. Save the file in the documents folder of your device..
now, open an Xterminal and type these two commands exactly.. remember they are case sensative:
    sudo gainroot
    sh MyDocs/.documents/fixpm.sh enable
Reboot your device once more and you should hopefully have a happy N900!
Any problems refer to the first link in this post... and post and questions in that thread..

  • My new nokia n900 with linux maemo5 can't find my ...

First i do say hello to all here in this forum witch i hope they can help me out here.
I buyed yesterday my nokia n900 with linux maemo5. Everything i do like on my nokia except:
My n900 can't find my SSID of my wireless router http://tinyurl.com/yfgtzx4 made by motorola/netopia. The same is, when i try to connect with my linux ubuntu installed on my macbook pro.
With my iPhone and with my Macbook Pro running osx snow leopard and windows 7 i can connect trough wifi, cause they able to find my SSID.
I hope there is somebody here who can help me out to connect my n900 with linux maemo5 to my wifi!
Otherwise i feel sorry to return that almost perfect device back to the shop, thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

By the way: my router firmware is uptodate! As fare as my technical knowledge sees, the problem should be with maemo5, because other ssid's arround me are shown on my nokia, but just not my own. And as i have a contract made with swisscom, the router is also of a swisscom vdsl wireless router. So i immagine, if i am not able to connect to that router and the n900 is selled by swisscom too, there would be a big problem in future with a multitude swisscom customers witch has buyed the n900. And i would be really sad to return that device back, cause as i said i really like that device. Thanks

  • Problem with Nokia N900

I am having a few problems with my Nokia N900. Would really thankful if someone help me with the below issues:
    1. Not able to use internet website after some gap. Need to restart my phone and then it will work.
    2. Downloaded Facebook widget but it can't work as asking for account validation but when I put user name and password for my facebook just give an error that there are no network connection.
    3. Installed aMSN messenger but unable to do the voice chat. Camera is working but voice is not working. Error received that Snack Library Detected. Please guide me how or where to found Snack Library in my phone.
    User of:
    Nokia N8.00

The phone doesn't yet support this "operator codes" so you need to call the appropriate number instead. I understand this feature will be coming in a firmware update.. See this thread for more info

  • Disappointed in Nokia N900

Hi I got a new Nokia N900 two days ago, surprisingly although it has two cameras it cant make a video call, my line supports 3G and video calls but nothing in the menu says video call at all. another main issue that annoyed me, there is no call divert in Nokia N900, only call forwarding, for example in my country if you want to divert your phone to another you must dial (**21* phone num #) but the problem with Nokia N900 it doesnt dial the * or the # although its dialed on the screen it says incorrect number and this is really annoying, hope there is a solution for both problems above or Nokia N900 is a failure.

    Dear Sir
this section is called (Nseries & Smartphones) and my phone is N900 so i guess i posted in the right place, and as a Nokia customer (businessman) i am not supposed to be good in softwareand keep searching and asking and downloading..etc.. what i do expect is to find the normal phone features in the Nokia phone i paid for.
as a business man, please read your manual.
the unit came with a short manual and you can get the full manual pdf here:
    Nokia N900 User Guide
the unit just does way to much to sit here and answer such a broad question.

    Good Morning Everyone,
I recently purchased a new Nokia N900 from eBay .....but now the tilting of the phone to activate the dialer no longer works,

The lights for the physical keyboard don't work at all.
The facebook app doesn't allow log in
New to you or described by Ebay seller as new since would only expect to find re-furbished devices.
Dialler should open if rotating from landscape to portrait.
With reference to FM transmitter it could either be regionally disabled, but also make sure no USB cable is attached.

  • The NOKIA N900 UPDATE

Hey guys, i got off the phone with a nokia sales rep. I called to find out about my order since i ordered online from the nokia store. She said that the n900 has already started shipping to people since the nov. 10th. And that they are sending those with earlier shipments first. SInce i ordered mine on sept 23 i will get mine very soon- possible end of the week or next week.
ALSO she said that the bundle deal with the Nokia N900 and the bluetooth headset is no longer available and for those who ordered beforehand you should call in with your web order number and they will give you an option to either:
1- take off the bluetooth headset but give you 15%  off on the nokia N900 (i saved $106) and give you $1 shipping express.
    or
2- honor the old agreement and send you the bluetooth headset when the N900 ships out.
Needless to say i took the 15% off and saved some money. But im just letting you guys know that if you havent called the number you should instead of looking at the nokia order webpage for updates. You now have an option to save money and the N900s are on their way.

See if this user-tip for syncing to a new computer helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
If you have music from other sources on your phone (e.g. copied from CDs) and you don't have them on a backup, then there are some program listed half-way down this page which might be able to copy them back : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Can't sync my Macbook with my new Nokia Lumia 900.

I spent two hours with a couple of the tech folks at the AT&T store yesterday, trying to get my new Nokia Lumia 900 to sync to my Macbook... but with no luck. No matter what we did, I kept getting a message that the server was not secure, and so the calendar and address book wouldn't sync. Other things probably as well, though these two were my primary concerns. And, yes, we had downloaded the Windows Phone 7 Connector. It didn't seem to matter. Any suggestions, other than taking the phone back and getting another iPhone for a couple hundred more than I paid for the Lumia?

Take it back and buy an iPhone...
Sorry had to say it -

  • Problem In using Nokia PC Suite with the new Nokia...

My Nokia Ahs 310 is a new phone I bought and I tried with it to connect internet through my PC using Nokia PC Suite. But, when I connect phone to the PC it tells that it can't find the drivers and install the new device. And in someyimes in Nokia PC Suite it showed as "connected in non compatible USB".
However I can't log into internet using my Nokia Asha 310. Please help me in this regard.

scoobyman, I think KRNS tries to use his Nokia 310 as modem for his computer. Consequently, no Wi-Fi involved.

This does not affect the Nokia 310 but only Nokia Asha 501, Nokia 301, Nokia 210, and the Nokia 206 – because my Nokia 310 works with Nokia Suite and PC Suite perfectly. Furthermore, The Nokia 301 was tested with the PC Suite successfully. Same for the Nokia 206. Success reports for the Nokia 210 are still missing.

install the latest Nokia Suite. This install the latest Connectivity Cable Driver automatically. Then
install the latest PC Suite (I like its modem handling more)
Nokia 310 » SIM Manager » choose SIM1 (at least for data)
PC Suite » Menu » File » Connect to the Internet
Works here with my Nokia 310, just tested for you. However, I was not able to use SIM2 for the computer. If neither PC Suite nor Nokia Suite worked for you, please say so!

i have zero out all data on my imac, as i brought it second hand and the disk the guy supplied dont seem capatable with my imac to install the operating system again so it is frozen at the grey start up screen. should i buy a new snow leopard disc from apple and install that as my new operating system. please help as had the computer a month now and still cant use it yet.

You can call AppleCare and request a replacement set of the original DVD's that shipped with the computer for a nominal charge. You will need the serial number (look on the bottom of the stand) and a credit card. Click the AppleCare Contact Info link. Without knowing which iMac you have it's very difficult to say if a new SL disc would work or not.

  • Nokia N80 with NEW Firmware wont sync with PC Suit...

    Hello everyone
i have my Nokia N80 on 02 network
i upgraded the old firmware to the new 4.0623 firmware without any problems at all...
now when i connect to latest version of PC Suite via bluetooth, which used to work fine with the old firmware..
PC Suite says its connected via bluetooth, but when you go to contacts, and then try tp UPDATE them, it just searches for over 15 minutes, and nothing happens..
have done everything i can, and nothing works!
why doesnt it work with new firmware?
even when i try and SYNC the phone with PC suite, it is having none of it! whats going on?

have you tried to syncronise with PC sync to see if the sync overall is in order in PC Suite.
Sometime the PC Sync might work, but the contacts folder sync in Nokia Phone Browser has zillion reasons to be stuck since it is Windwows Explorer inbedded.
By tryibg to use PC Sync you can narrow down the reasons what can go wrong

  • Cannot connect N79 with new and old Nokia suites r...

I have an N79 which I can successfully connect with Nokia Suite 3.3.x running on Windows XP and sync my data.
However, I have failed to connect the same phone (and also a N86) with the Nokia suite running on Windows 7. The connection with Windows seems fine (and I can browse the contents of the phone from Explorer). However Nokia Suite 3.3.x does not detect the device, although looking at the Add Phone window it is clearly trying to do something when I physically connect the phone - sometimes a message "Wait while we configure the phone etc."
I have tried removing all Nokia software, removing registry entries, reloading. But to no effect. I have tried repairing the various Mokia software elements through Control Panel.
I tried an older version of the suite (OVI 3.0.0.286). Again without success, except that it does see the phone because it lists it on the Add Phone screen. However, when I select it I get a pop-up advising me that the phone is not in PC Suite mode - but it is!!!  This does not happen every time but only after I delete the phone's entry from Devices. If I do not do that, the suite does not list the phone. The same happens on Vista.
The USB cable is from Nokia (CA 101). So same phone, same cable, same Nokia suite - works on XP but not on Win 7 or Vista.
Any ideas would be most welcome.

Hi, tinwhistle. Thanks for sharing with us your concern. Do you have the latest version of the Nokia Suite? Can you also make sure that you have an admin access on your Windows 7 computer, and your firewalls & antivirus programs are disabled. It would also help if your Windows 7 drivers are up-to-date. Keep us posted.
