Do "sudo" commands still work on Mavericks?

I've upgraded to Mavericks and the silly grey progress bar thing kicked back in.
Is the command "sudo pmset autopoweroff 0" still valid for Mavericks? I was about to type it and wondered if maybe they changed things that would hurt me if I typed that? Thanks!

Your 2010 MBP would be able to handle Yosemite, but I would strongly suggest that you get the current problem sorted out before trying to upgrade to Yosemite. I'd also recommend another backup that isn't created by Time Machine if you are thinking of upgrading. SuperDuper and CarbonCopyCloner can make bootable clones of hard drives. If you clone your existing system to a fresh external drive, you would be able to boot from that drive and recover quickly in the event that your Yosemite upgrade didn't work out. Time Machine backups are not 100% reliable.
It's possible that, if your internal HD is the one that shipped with your MBP in 2010, it may be failing. If it keeps needing repairs, that is probably a sign that it is approaching the end of its useful life.
Have you run Disk Utility's Repair tool on the external drive as well?
I mentioned the hub because some people have reported here that attaching their USB 3 drives through a USB 2 hub solved some disconnection problems. A good-quality powered USB 2 hub won't cost much.
My most recent brush with random disconnections involved a nice new OWC drive enclosure. I used the cable that came with the drive, but the drive kept disconnecting. Using a different cable solved the problem. You wouldn't expect that what appeared to be a high quality cable would be a problem straight out of the box, but it was.

  • Does iMovie 9.0.4 still work with Mavericks?

    I read in a post here yesterday that someone found that "mavericks forced imovie 10 to be installed - ie when I tried to start imovie after mavericks, it refused to start up until I install imovie 10".
    I want to carry on using my old version of iMovie if I install 10.9.  Can anyone confirm from experience that iMovie 9.0.4 still works perfectly?

    I think "forced"may be something of a strong word. Having upgraded to Mavericks, iMovie 10 showed up in the App Store as a download so it was there to be downloaded.  I, along with many others with a mid-2007 iMac, then could not download it as it claimed the video card would not support it, but that is another problem addressed on numerous other threads.  From my experience there was never anything to suggest that you must use iMovie 10 with Mavericks although the reverse is true in that to use iMovie 10 you must have Mavericks.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the response. I have tried the procedure suggested by you. But I was struck up with this issue. "repair disk permissions" option is disabled. So can you help me out in finding a solution.

  • Host function plus sudo command not working

    Hi,
    For normal command such as ls, it works.
    But when I run the following
    v_host := '/usr/bin/sudo -u devuser /test/app/dev/scripts/test.sh
    host(v_host);
    it does not work.
    anyone has idea ? Thanks.
    Ivan

    I imagine sudo is probably attempting to prompt for a password. I think it depends on who you are logged in as and who you are trying to log in as (and whether you have logged in recently within the last few minutes).
    The host command won't support this kind of interaction. It needs to be a command that returns its results without requiring any further prompting.
    That would be my guess.

  • My sudo command doesnt work.

    hello everyone i am new to terminal and when i write sudo /sbin/service ssh start  at first it looks as if working by asking my password but after it tells me that command not found so if you could help me throught it would be perfect.
    thanks.

    If it asks for your password, sudo is working. The problem is it cannot find the /sbin/service command because it doesn't exist.
    ssh is in /usr/bin and it normally doesn't need sudo.
    My guess would be you are trying to start sshd, which can easily be done by enabling Remote Login in Sharing System Preferences.

    Where do I include Exchange domain in Mail setup?

    Our company is running Exchange 2007, OWA enabled, EWS is setup, Auto discovery is enable. The only thing I haven't got an answer on is whether Service Pack 4 has been installed. The server is set up with a domain specified but I don't know where to include that in the Mail Account Setup. Mail seems to be locating the server fine but it says username or password can not be verified. I can only assume that it's because I haven't included the domain correctly.
    iPad (and I assume iPhone/iTouch) have a field in their setup to include the domain and a coworker is connecting fine with to the company server. Where is it in Mail? I have tried to prepend it to my username (domain/username) but it hasn't worked. I can't recall all the variations I have tried of this, but unless I have the domain first in the username field, Mail won't even connect to the server. I've been all over these boards and dozens more and I can't find any answers to this problem.
    Any here have any ideas? Thanks,

    Bump.
    I still haven't found an answer to this. Anyone else have any ideas. Still waiting to hear back from out IT guys about the service pack issues.
    Is there any way to attach a screen grab to a post? Thought it might help paint the picture in case I haven't stated it clearly.
    Again, thanks in advance for any help with this.

    Hi. I'm having precisely the same problem. My Exchange account works like a charm on my iPhone, but all permutations of the same settings simply don't work in OS X Mail (v. 4.3).
    Has anyone out there set up an Exchange account with a domain? Can you tell us where you put it to get the account to work?

    Enter your username as:
    <domain>\<username>
    This is standard practice for Microsoft if there's no place to enter the domain name.

    Thanks Asatoran. That turned out to be part of the solution for me. The other part was changing the port I used for the SSL connection -- it was set wrong at some point, either because the default was wrong, or because I forgot I had changed it in troubleshooting before trying the slash the way you suggest. Anyway, the port number for some reason doesn't show up on my iPhone settings, so it didn't occur to me to tweak it.2.0 GHz MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 4GB RAM

    Could you please state the port numer you changed from and to?
    I´m having the same problem and still can´t access the exchange server outside the company network.
    But it seems like Mail 4.3 tryes to use the internal server and never the external? Any tips on this?MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

    Quit your mail entirely, then in terminal do:
    mv ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope* ~/Desktop
    This moves all your "Envelope Index*" files to your desktop.  An alternative is deleting the files, but this allows you to keep them as a temporary back-up (you can delete them at-will later).  Also, you can move the files from Finder instead of Terminal, if you prefer.
    After the files have been moved, re-open Mail
    This should re-load all your email messages, updating/restoring the count
    While this works, it does not explain the reason the count goes missing, nor does it ensure that the count won't go missing again in the future, but at least it's a temporary workaround.

  • Pages 09 Still Works w/ Mavericks

    After much dismay dealing with the new version of Pages, I decided to dig out my iWork disc and try to reinstall the old version. When doing this I discovered that the old version was still on my computer (in a folder named  iWork 09 in applications) I opened Pages 09 and it seems to be working fine. The only draw back is that any of my 09 files that I opened with 11, now will not be able to be opened again in 09. Once it converts it to 11, 09 no longer will open it. So... I have removed Pages 11 and all is good in the Apple world again.

    Sadly I must agree - I am a long term Pages user and this version is just awful. its no longer possible to create a document in page layout format - and all the assists are gone (page guides, etc). No keystrokes for styles, No merging table cells (as far as I can see) - the list goes on.
    I use Pages on the Ipad and the Mac version is obviously trying to move closer to that. But Pages for Mac has just become another wordprocessor, and a fairly primitive one at that. For those that dont like Word (and that includes me) try Nisus Writer. Its now a far slicker and usable offer

  • HT1528 This still works in Mavericks!

    Thank you for this... The Directory Utility is pretty well hidden away... Could be in the utilities as well!

    It doesn't say, but I think it's likely. However I use several other sites with Java chat, and they work perfectly, and I do allow all the regular updates of Java.
    I had a look at the link you gave, but I couldn't find anything when I searched "Next Generation Java Plug-in 1.6.0_15". Should I just download a completely new exe, and would I need the two optinal files for kernel and online installation?

  • Does iDVD still work under Mavericks?

    Has anybody checked it out yet? It sure appears that there's no update coming, so it would be good to know if compatibility will be broken with the OS upgrade.

    In the new iMovie select the project you want to export and use the File ➙ Share ➙ File menu option:
    Select the size (4:3 for iDVD) in the next window:
    and in the next window select the destination of the movie:
    Then add it manually to the iDVD project.

  • If i install mavericks will my iwork'09 still work

    I have downloaded but not installed mavericks on my macbook pro but am dithering about installing it.  Does iwork'09 work on it or will I be forced to pay for an upgrade.  I don't want to have a problem with older documents not being able to be opened.

    iWork '09 will still work in Mavericks.
    Apple has chopped away at all its software not just iWork.
    Mavericks itself is a cut back OS in some regards and also only still at version 10.9.1. Usually I only fully commit when the OSX reaches v.3
    I find it can be slow to respond on occassion and I do not like the implementation of Labels/Tabs. In fact there is a thread in the Mavericks forum almost as large as the feature list one we have here, just on that subject and the users are just as unhappy.
    There is also the fact that it denies you older useful software that is not Mavericks compatible and pushes you deeper into relying on iCloud, the Mac App Store and other fav Apple ideas. I feel Apple's noose ever so gently tucking up under my Adams Apple in Mavericks.
    If you already have paid versions of iWork '08 or '09 you will not have to pay for the Mavericks versions.
    Keep in mind however that the latest iWork Apps are incompatible with everything else except themselves and hardware that can run Mavericks and iOS7.
    iWork for iCloud beta is still just beta and more limited than any of the other variations. Really only to be used as a last resort.

  • Sys.utl_http stopped working in batch; still works in APEX?

    We have a package in Oracle 11gR1 that runs a nightly "job" to produce reports; it is designed to call the Oracle Reports server via URL and create a report as pdf, then save it to a directory in the Oracle LINUX filesystem. The call in the output procedure is simple:
               MY_URL :=
    'http://refugee1.dcf.state.fl.us:7777/reports/rwservlet?server=repRefugeeTest&report=DELIVERABLE_RPT.rdf&destype=FILE&desformat=pdf&userid=ruser/collins@RPD&desname=/app/oracle/external_files/official_reports/MAY_2014_DELIV.pdf&contract=XK030&report_beg_d=05/01/2014&report_end_d=05/31/2014&subc=&sticker=OFFICIAL REPORT';
                UTL_HTTP.SET_TRANSFER_TIMEOUT (180);
                MY_HTTP_RTN := UTL_HTTP.REQUEST (MY_URL);
                UTL_HTTP.SET_TRANSFER_TIMEOUT (60);
    This Oracle package has worked for years with user RPD, until we moved up some rdf and report package changes yesterday.  These same four commands still work fine using APEX (with user APEX_PUBLIC_USER) in a windows-based browser (Firefox and IE), but this command UTL_HTTP.REQUEST does not produce output anymore from the Oracle package (with user RPD) and throws no exception.  There is no job in the Oracle Reports queue (exception or not) to show that the request was passed.  And, if I paste the string of MY_URL into a windows-browser, then it runs and Oracle Reports shows the job.  I'm stumped!  Please help shed light on the mystery; how can I trace or trap what's (not) happening?

    Does
    aplay -Dplug:iec958 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
    work?
    Did you try this while running a DE? Did you try disabling/enabling powersaving?

  • I just downloaded Maverick on my Macbook Pro from 2011.  When I try to open iPhoto, it says that I have an old version that doesn't work with Maverick.  None of the solutions stated on this forum work for me, because there are no options displayed.

    After downloading Maverick on the MacBook Pro that I bought in 2011, I am unable to open iPhoto. The message says "You can't use this version of the application "iPhoto" with this version of OS X.  You have "iPhoto" 9.2.3"  What???  That is ridiculous.  Why doesn't Maverick download everything?  I've tried the "fixes" I found on this forum, but none of them work for me, because there is no workaround via the library.  I can't access the library.

    I have an old iPhoto version and it still works with Mavericks, the version before yours, that is puzzling.

    The startup disk may need repairing ...
    Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
    Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
    If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to acces the built in utilities in  OS X Recovery
    Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery.
    OS X Recover does require a broadband high speed internet connection.
