Do the air/pro herschel cases fit the macbook pro with the cd drive?

My boyfriend owns the macbook pro with the cd drive. I am trying to purchase him a herschel case (they are sold in the accessory section in the apple store, online as well as in store)
My only concern is that I know the air and the new pro are thinner, more sleek then the macbook pro with the cd drive and I'm just curious to know if the herschel cases that say "fits air/pro 13inch" actually fit the macbook with the cd drive.
Any answers would be very much so appreciated!
Thank you.

yes their a difference.  The retna model is slimmer and doesnt have an optical drive.

I doubt the license is affecting the performance - it might be a case of the software being too old for the machine.
In any case, you can contact Adobe support thru chat and have them reset your activation count to eliminatre your doubts regarding the license.

It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard.

Purchase new superdrive, takes 2-3 weeks for shipping at my city.
It can't be done. If your computer has an internal optical drive, working or not, that is the drive you must use. Only computers such as the Macbook Pro Retina/Macbook Air that have no internal optical drive can install Windows from an external drive.

  • How to install Elements8 (on disc) on new Mac Book Pro with no disc drive?

How can I install Elements 8 (on disc) on my new Mac Book Pro with no disch drive?

Copy the contents of the Elements 8 in a pen drive(from a Mac that has the capability) and then copy the contents to your disk(on the new machine i.e. Mac book Pro) and run the installer. If this is not possible you can download the installer directly from here.

  • Loading CS5 Master Collection onto new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive

I have a complete, legitimate, registered version of CS5 Master Collection. I also have a new Macbook Pro with no DVD drive. I have lost the disk, but have the box and confirmation email when I registered the product, with the key code. This product cost alot of money and I really need to get it onto my new machine. Can I do this without having the additional cost of a new DVD drive? I already paid for and own the software with keys so it's not like I'm trying to bend anything or do it for free. Any advice would be appreciated thank you.

I currently run Mac Pro with three hard drives. Can I dual boot or even triple boot with Snow Leopard on one drive and Mountain Lion or Lion on others?
I need to keep Snow Leopard so that I can run some old softward.

If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.
CCC can clone Lion Recovery - great for moving or backup.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the Mac Pro with SCSI/SAS drives?

Hi guys I am considering to move on to a Mac Pro from my old PC.
The Mac Pro enclosure is quite unique in its hard drive holders as no cables are used and all drives are connected with a plugin mechanism.
So I am curious if that will allow me to upgrade to a SCSI/SAS storage system which requires cable connections between drives and the SCSI/SAS card on the PCI-E slot. I dont know if this will be possible with the Mac Pro enclosure.
Has anyone tried to do this?
Btw is there any Ultra320 or SAS(preferably) interface card available for Mac OS X?

The connectors for SATA drives can be used with SAS drives. However, the controller needs to be SAS compatible. I have never installed a SAS drive in the Mac Pro bay to see what happens. If some one has a SAS drive and wants to try this I would be interested in the results.
My guess is that the Mac Pro would not see the drive.
Areca sells the Mac Pro PCIe bootable ARC-1680 SAS controller in several configurations. This controller allows the user to utilize SAS or SATA hard drives connected to the card. The ARC-1680x comes with two external mini SAS connectors that can support eight direct connect hard drives or up to 128 devices (in theory) when used with SAS expanders.
The ARC-1680LP has one internal mini SAS port and one external mini SAS port. I looked at the Mac Pro internal SATA connectors and they can unscrew from the frame but there is only about 1/2" of clearance in that area of the case. In addition, I would want the hot swap bays to still operate and I did not see an easy way to patch into the existing SATA connectors. It would be nice if the Mac Pro factory connectors used snap on SATA connector on the back of the backplane so that users could interface the 4 SATA bays with an internal PCie controller. However, its hard wired in the existing configuration. With the new Mac Pro PCIe RAID 5 card on the market there must be alternative connectors that allow this type of installation to work properly.
Based on the ease at which the Areca SAS controller can be added as an external using the ARC-1680x I went with that option. I am using it with eight direct connect SATA hard drives now. I plan to expand the storage by adding a SAS expander in the form of a hub or an enclosure with SAS capabilities. I have been looking at a 16 bay SAS enclosure but I am not sure how loud it will be
Details on the ARC-1680 can be found here:
    http://www.areca.com.tw/products/pcietosas1680series.htm
Its very cool to have SAS or SATA capability along with a bootable card that can support tons of hard drives and RAID levels 0, 1,1E, 3, 5, 6, 10, 30, 50, 60 or JBOD . I booted the Mac Pro with a 2TB Mac OS X 10.4.10 RAID 6 volume and ran Xbench. It shows a 400MB/sec. hard drive setup and raises the overall Xbench score substantially.
While I doubt I will boot the Mac Pro from the RAID 6 volume much, it is very cool that that function is available. This is the only PCIe host adapter I have found with boot capabilities besides Apples new $999 4 port SATA internal card. SAS has lots of expansion capabilities. Users that want pretty much unlimited hard drive connectivity will enjoy the new ARC-1680x.
    Have fun!

  • Will the close future hold a macbook laptop with no disc drive ?

the new macbook pro retina does not have a disc drive.
    i find it sad.
i would not buy a laptop unless it had a disc drive. and i would definetly not buy a laptop that costs as much as macbook costs and then have to spend extra money for a disc drive.
because you see. they still sell DVDs and CDs in stores. which means when i go to summerhouse in the summer i sometimes buy a DVD and in the summerhouse i play it on my laptop.
so i think you can remove the disc drive from laptops in about.... idunno 2045. but not now. not yet.
will i be able to buy a macbook laptop next year which still has a disc drive ?

You can buy a 2012 MacBook Pro right now that has an optical drive - it just doesn't have a Retina display. If you've already purchased a Retina display model, you should have known that it wouldn't come with an optical drive. More and more software is being distributed over the Internet rather than optical discs (Adobe comes to mind - I was able to download my CS6 suite while waiting on the disc and activation code to arrive in the mail).
Yeah, it's a bummer for watching movies, I agree. One of the reasons I wouldn't have picked a Retina display. I already bought a late 2011 in March and really don't need the faster CPU/GPU,  USB 3.0 ports, etc., on the non-Retina display models, so I'm quite happy.
If you've already purchased the Retina display model you have 14 days in which to return it and get a non-Retina display MacBook Pro with the optical drive.
Your choice - Apple's satisfying almost all of it's customer base at the moment (save for those who want a 17" display)...

  • Snow Leopard Install problems on Macbook Pro with bad optical drive

I've tried this (refer to article below) to install Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro with a bad optical drive, but I am not able to choose a wi-fi network, or install disk after startup. Is there something else I need to do?
To use Remote Install Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server:
Insert the Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server Install Disc into the optical disc drive of the other computer.
If the other computer is a Mac, open /Applications/Utilities/Remote Install Mac OS X. On Windows, choose "Remote Install Mac OS X" from the Install Assistant.
Read the introduction and click Continue.
Choose the install disc you want to use, and click Continue.
Choose a network connection: AirPort, if you are using an AirPort network, or Ethernet, if the other computer is on an Ethernet network and you have an optional Apple USB Ethernet Adapter connecting your MacBook Air or Mac mini to the same network. Click Continue.
Restart your MacBook Air or Mac mini and hold down the Option key as it starts up, until you see a list of available startup disks.
Click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, on your MacBook Air or Mac mini choose your AirPort network from the pop-up list.
If the network is secure, you will be prompted for a password. You can enter a private network name by choosing the ellipsis (...) and typing the name.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, when you see the AirPort status icon indicating signal strength, click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
You can now reinstall software, reset your password or run Disk Utility using instructions from the User's Guide.

Are you able to connect the two via Firewire cable? If so you can boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode. Then boot the other computer from the OS X installer disc. The installer should detect the hard drive of the MBP as an eligible target destination.
If you have a spare hard drive or at least 10 GBs of usable space on an external drive, then you can create a small 8 GB partition on that drive. Then clone the installer DVD to that partition using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can then boot the MBP from that partition using OPTION boot: Start the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the cloned DVD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external partition.
Source means the OS X Installer DVD.

  • How best to setup a Mac Pro with two hard drives for 1st hard drive or OS failure?

My first Apple, a Mac Pro,  is to arrive on Monday (1/7).  I will be putting Win7 on Bootcamp and installing Parrallels.  It will have two 1T hard drives.   I would appreciate
any advice on how best to set it up for best recovery in case of a hard drive or OS crash.   You can tell I have experience with Windows.    It looks like my best choices are
either disk cloning software or just installing OS X from the recovery disk  on the second drive.   Apple says it is legal to do another installation.   I know the disk cloning will not work on the bootcamp partition which I plan to use for the Parallels program.  Can OS X have an option to boot from two differnet disks and OS installs?
What I am really wanting to do in the event of a crash,  is to just boot up on the other disk and keep working.     I try to keep data on a separate partition  with backups so
that a disk or OS crash doesn't cause any data loss.

    I do not use windows.
However on my Mac Pro for cloning/backups/bootable backups i use Carbon Copy Cloner.
It has an ability to clone entire disk (unless specified differently) so I can boot from another disk or restore back if I want to.

  • Boot Camp help on MacBook Pro with no DVD drive

I purchased a 2010 15" Pro from a friend that just ordered a new Mac. He removed the CD and installed a 128 SSD as the primary drive and used a DVD shell kit that now houses the 2.5 SATA drive as the 2nd drive.
I want to load Win 7 using Boot Camp but I am running into a problem. I have downloaded all of my drivers and have a USB DVD attached. I get as far as installing windows in the Boot Camp setup, the Mac reboots to install 7 but when it reboots I get a flashing icon at startup the switches between an 'X', an 'apple' logo and the 'NO' symbol (circle with a slash).
How do you load windows with no DVD?
I made a bootable USB from my 7 ISO but that doesn't seem to work either. Any suggestion?
    Mike P

ISO issue: burn to DVD has to use another program or if you use Disk Utility use the slowest 2x burn speed
A driver is provided in download for MacBook Air models that lack a DVD.
Swap the superdrive back for the install is what 98% finally bit the bullet and works.
There is also an issue with having two drives present during Windows install.
So you need a USB-DVD driver on USB flash for those Macs that do not have a DVD (no one uses CDs)
