Do the fans speed up when running Apple Service Diagnostic?

When i run apple service diagnostic cd (2.5.8) the fans really speed up and don't slow down so after a few minutes i stop the testing, is this normal?. It seems like it is the rear fans that are going full speed, can't tell if any of the other fans are speeding up or not, i stop the testing after a few minutes as i don't know if this is normal or not and don't want to cause any damage.

Unless you bathe the computer in helium gas, I doubt if the fans will run faster than their designed speed even full bore.
The helium gas relates to a war story told by my motors and transformers prof "way back when" of a cooling fan in a nuclear facility where the atmosphere in the containment vessel was helium for whatever reason. The fan was powered by a universal motor which had nameplate voltage applied to it. The thing that limits the universal is turning resistance, and helium, being less dense in that environment, provided much less resistance to the fan blades, thus allowing the fan to overspeed and then disintegrate from the resulting centrifugal force. From that, I learned that interdisciplinary engineering teams really do need to talk to each other on a constant basis. Plus, I guess I learned a valuable lesson if I ever decided to build my backyard nuke.

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

  • Satellite A100: looking for software to control the fan speed

    Hi,
I'm looking for software to control/read out the fan speed of my laptop, because Power Saver does not seem to do anything. It does not seem to matter if i set the 'Cooling Method' to 'Battery Optimized' or 'Maximum Performance', or even the fixed CPU processing speed. I've (de)installed the Common Module & Power Saver a couple of times to no avail.
Also SpeedFan & NHC do not work.

    Hi
Sorry but I do not agree with your opinion about Power saver utility. Do you really believe that Toshiba create tool like this for nothing? Just for info: power saver utility is not available with Vista OS and on this forum you can find topics where people really missing this nice and useful utility.
Anyway it is well known that many tools you can find on the internet have no much influence on notebook cooling fan speed. To be honest, something like that can be very dangerous because most users want to have silent notebooks and overheating issues are totally underestimated.
Can you please be a little bit more specific about your problem? Is your notebook too loud for you or is battery running time to short? Why you are not satisfied with this tool?

  • How do you change the fan speed (rpm)

On a mac, how do you change the fan speed to 7200 or something?

As was mentioned, installing smcFanControl will do this:
    http://81.169.182.62/~eidac/software/page5/page5.html
However, as others have indicated, you should determine what the issue is.  For starters, is your machine actually running hot?  Have you run something to let you know what the actual temperatures are?  Setting the fan at max speed will make your system noisy, will reduce the fan life, and significantly reduce your battery charge.

  • Can you adjust the fan speed? How?

I had an espiode the other day where the MacBook got so hot that it basically shut down. Can the fan be adjusted and how do I get to the area to adjust it? I am fairly new to the world of MacBooks and would appreciate the advice.

You can easily adjust the fan speed by using smcFanControl:
    http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049
That said, it sounds a bit strange that the MacBook would run so hot. The fan should adjust itself to the CPU warmth. If that is not happening, I'd investigate whether the fan really works.

  • The fan seems to be running more

Perhaps it's full of dust and not cooling properly, when was the last time it was cleaned out...?

  • About the rules (logic) between the fan speed and the temperatures?

    Hello All,
Well, I've had a bad experience with my MBP last week: my motherboard busted and had to replace it... Expensive part to replace!
After thinking about the reasons why it failed, my attention has been directed toward a possible motherboard overheating, which might have damaged the motherboard.
I've installed the iStat Pro widget and regularly monitor temperatures displayed vs. fan speed. I do get a bit nervous when I see a 84 oC CPU temperature and idle (2000 rpm) fan speeds. My GPU temperature is also sometimes in that range.
    My questions are:
    1) does anybody know the rules (logic) between the various temperatures (CPU, CPU heatsink, GPU, GPU heatsink, enclosure, HD, etc.) and the fan speeds?
    2) other than with the fews apps out there, is there a way to customize the rules? Is there a text file or a plist file somewhere where I can change the rules?
    Thanks!

If your idle speeds are 2000 rpm, you have one of the original Core Duo MBPs. For me, I see fans on my 17" CD MBP speeding up once temps get into the upper 70s °C.
Apps like smcFanControl allow you to alter the setpoints. Note that some users who installed smcFanControl, then uninstalled it, report symptoms like yours - namely, the fans remain at idle no matter how hight the temps get, until a thermal shutdown is triggered (somewhere close to 100 °C).

    Hi,
Is your formula attached to basic salary element or some other element? You need to make sure that basic salary element has some value and is processed before this formula is called. Are you able to see value for basic salary element after payroll run?

You aren't losing any time in that mode, but I believe it is a 10 second fade out/fade in.

  • It takes long time to load the parameter's value when running we run report

    Hi,
It takes long time to load the parameter's value when running we run report. What could cause this? How to troubleshoot the behavior of the report? Could I use Profile and what events should i select?
    Thanks

    Hi jori5,
Based on my understanding, after changing the parameter, the report render very slow, right?
In Reporting Service, the total time to generate a report include TimeDataRetreval, TimeProcessing and TimeRendering. To analyze which section take much time, we can check the table Executionlog3 in the ReportServer database. For more information, please
    refer to this article:
More tips to improve performance of SSRS reports.
In your scenario, since you mention the query spends less time, the delay might happens during report processing and report rendering section. So you should check Executionlog3 to check which section costs most of time, then you can refer to this article
    to optimize your report:
    Troubleshooting Reports: Report Performance.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.
    Best regards,

  • How to invoke the shutdown event tracker when running restart-computer

In Windows command shell, it is possible to run shutdown /d to specify a reason code and /c to enter a comment into the shutdown event tracker to log why a shutdown was being performed.
I'm not seeing an equivalent parameter for the restart-computer cmdlet in PowerShell.  Is it possible to invoke the shutdown event tracker when running restart-computer?

    help restart-computer
says no.  There's nothing wrong with using native commands, in a number of cases they are better than what PS provides.
I hope this post has helped!

If I create a partition for Bootcamp that is at least 30 GB in size, is that all the storage I get when running Windows?

There are differences between each Mac and what the original configuration of the Mac is/was. If your Mac originally came with an Optical drive, burning the ISO to a DVD and using it will work. Hardware modifications like Optibay will cause problems. Modifying Bootcamp info.plist will cause problems. Disk Utility partitioning will cause problems. A custom Hybrid MBR will cause problems. External Optical drives are unlikely to work. There is long litany of grief.
