IPhoto 09 face recognition

I would like to know if the iPhoto 09 face recognition feature is ON by default and can't be switched off even if we feel we don't need it.
The reason I ask is that, after a year of Leopard, I am really exasperated at this Spotlight regularly monopolizing 95% of processor time, uncontrollably trying to index the whole Universe, just in case I might want to search the contents of files, a feature that is ON by default and can't be switched off even if we feel we don't need such an overkill process.
Same with Time Machine, that starts archiving everytime an external drive is plugged in, unless we rush to the Time Machine System Preferences and navigate to the Confidential tab to kill the already running indiscretion.
I just hope that iPhoto 09 didn't join this recent un-Apple philosophy that uncontrollably overworks processors and noisy fans, temporarily slowing the fastest computer in the World to the speed of my first Mac SE, just because it decides you're an idiot that might not know its own needs.

If you find that Spotlight is “regularly monopolizing 95% of processor time“ then you have a problem with Spotlight. This is not how i works on nay of my machines. Perhaps you need to troubleshoot that.
I was able to turn off Time machine with no difficulty. Perhaps you need to read the help.
The faces feature use a one time scan of the iPhoto Library when you first launch 09. Thereafter it does nothing at all unless you use it.

Lr6 might. Lr5 has plenty of evidence (e.g. data tables in catalog) that Adobe did lotsa work on face recognition before releasing Lr5, but obviously didn't finish in time for Lr5 release. There is no official announcement about it, but if they weren't going to finish we'd probably have seen all the face-rec stuff removed, so I am assuming face-rec will be a headline feature in Lr6 - we'll see.

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.

Accessing the iPhoto '09 face.db

Is it possible to access the iPhoto '09 face.db file from applescript?
I pulled the file out of the bundle and placed it on my desktop.
Using SQLite database browser, I verified that there are records and tables of interest in the file face.db.
I can't, however, access the contents of the database using Database Events. What gives? Shouldn't I be able to do that? After I open the database, applescript tells me there are no records in it.

I want to sync the thumbnails shown for each face, which is the key photo for the person, with my apple address book. Can't access the thumbnail via applescript, from my limited knowledge, so I'm accessing the underlying database iPhoto utilizes.

IPhoto 11 face recognition has lousy results!

New iMac user here. I am loading all of my photos into iPhoto 11 year by year so I can identify Faces and locations. The Faces recognition feature is doing a lousy job! Even with a series of photos taken on the same day Faces seems to only recognize the same person about a third of the time. Sometimes it will give a wild guess, but most of the time it just labels everything as unidentified. I've labeled over 1000 photos already. Shouldn't Faces be more accurate by now? Is there anything I can do to improve this?

Yeah it is terrible, I wish they could swap in how Picasa handles face recognition. I'm really torn as Picasa is incredible at facial recognition, but the rest of the app is terrible. iPhoto is the opposite.

You cannot. The Photos.app has no controls to change the sorting of photos and albums.

You can search for captions or tags. So add keywords in iPhoto on your Mac to your Faces albums, before you sync the photos to your mobile device.

This is not syncing. Photos/videos in the iPad's Camera Roll can be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. Choosing an empty folder for importing photos from the Camera Roll has no effect on this.
What did you use on your computer for the import? Most importing software includes an option to delete photos from the source after the import process is complete.
If you want photos in the Camera Roll included with your iCloud's Photo Stream which is temporary storage, you need to turn Photo Stream on with your iCloud account settings on your iPad.

Need help with "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" option

I originally unchecked the "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" option because I wanted to keep my own file structure; however, I now want to get rid of my file structure and just import all pics into iPhoto library without losing all the editing and face recognition work I did. If I create a new library, I will have to redo all the editing which is a massive amount of work. I have a 50+GB library.

Unless you can hack an sql database, there is no way to do what you want, I'm afraid.

No face recognition for iPhone 4 in IOS 5.1

I updated my iPhone and i noticed that i did not have face recognition while my collegues with the 4s did is it exclusive?

The odd thing in that the table of iOS5 features (where you can compare which ones are available for which phones) does not mention face recognition at all.
But as previously said it does look as though its not available for anything less than a 4s at the moment. :/

I have a strange problem with my Face Recognition. Yesterday it worked perfectly, but today it doesn't. Note that I've cleaned registry with CCleaner, but didn't backup before that (stupid..).
I've downloaded the installation of Face Recognition from Toshiba's support and download site, but to install it you must uninstall the old program. OK, but at the and of the uninstallation comes an error, quote: "Error 1326.Error getting security: C:\ProgramData\TOSHIBA\SmartFaceV\ GetLastError:5".
Than the uninstallation rolls back and I receive another error, quote: "Error -1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information."

As far as I know you can set the OS back to the early time point
Try to roll back the OS to the early point before you made all the changes
As far as I know the CCLeaner allows you to uninstall the installed applications as well. It cleans the faulty files too maybe you should clean it again before installing this application again

wouldn’t be nice if also aperture could do also “face recognition” + “place” . some features are useless for professional business but some could make my work easier.

I am not disagreeing with you - and I will use these features too and really look forward to Aperture 3.0 or whatever comes next as much as anyone. I just meant that we need to be realistic about the capabilities of face recognition in a "pro environment" - i.e. you wouldn't want the grandma to be identified as the bride, just because she wore similar glasses and her haircolour happened to match the bride's on the day... All I am saying is that it is not difficult to quickly tag people with keyword bar presets "manually" - if a face detection helps here by doing the "obvious" ones by itself - awesome - but it needs to be configurable so that a group shot or a difficult one (smaller "head" in the picture/background people) are not mis-matched etc.
Note: I have not yet played with iPhoto09 so I should probably not write all these speculative things anyways and just await the final product, I rest assured the Aperture team is aware of all these things and will come out with some really nice new features.
My second point was that many of us are waiting for slightly more critical things - i.e. selective editing, better sharpening & smoothing, non-destructive effects/filters etc. - whereas the face-recognition is a "nice to have" thing rather than a make or break - as it can obviously be accomplished by keywording in the traditional way already - manipulating an area of an image with Capture NX's or Nik's Viveza precision is still not possible by contrast, at least not in an Aperture-only and non-destructive way (technically it is non-destructive to your original image of course, but every change takes up space by creating a "full image" copy.
It will all come to us eventually - they sure got the resources to create world-class products.
