Do the new Imacs fix the Backlight Gradient problem?

Ok, time to resurrect this question - as my 3rd copy of a 1st gen aluminum imac is starting to burn out my left eye... And I am not the only one if you look at the history of this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1502535
Has anyone had a chance to go into a store and checkout the new model? If someone does can they report their findings here?
I'm also curious if anyone is going to try and get applecare to fix their old imac by replacing it with a new one that does not have the problem - I am considering it.

I have a white 24" iMac with LCD display issue. Apple replaced the LCD under Apple Care. The new LCD had the same issue.
Went back to the Apple Store but, according to the Tech there's nothing wrong. Obviously, they're told to say it's within specs.
I went directly to an Apple Authorized Repair Center where they were familiar with the issue. So much so that the description on the work order described things I didn't mention but were there (yellowish discoloration in the center of display).
I won't give in to Apple saying it is what it is. There are perfect displays out there and I won't stop until they replace mine with one!

You can't use Boot Camp in 3 TB drives. You can download VirtualBox, Parallels or VMware Fusion and install Windows on a virtual machine. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321

I have the magic mouse, don't know whether it is something to do with that? Any ideas?

If gumsie's suggestion isn't the answer, try logging into another account, like Guest, and see if you get the same behavior. You may need to clean the windows on the bottom of the mouse.

How to know if your mac is using the latest Haswell architecture processor or not? and how to know the difference between the new imac and the 2012/13 imac?

Sorry to reopen an old post, but I've just purchased a 2nd hand late-2013 iMac (or so thats what the seller said).
I'm always sceptical though, and just wanted to know if there is a way to check if my iMac is indeed the late-2013 model that included Haswell?
I've attached screenshots of the About This Mac section hoping it may help shed some light.
Thank you in advance for your help!
PS - I can't compare to the iMac specs link you posted above because its now showing the late-2014 models.

  • Does the new iMac use the same memory as the previous?

Right now i have the 24" 2.16ghz iMac and i am considering selling it to buy the newest 24" 2.4 ghz version. My question is, do they use the same ram? The apple specs page for the new imac says it uses 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) which is what i thought i had in my current iMac. For some reason though on crucial's website it says the new imac uses 800mhz ram, i would likely trust apples specs but i just wanted to confirm if it is the same so i know if i can keep a 1gb stick or not to put in the new one. Thanks!

By using the manual method (Apple > iMac > 2.8 GHz) I only got PC2-5300 (667 MHz) RAM (although I do get PC2-6400 RAM for the 2.4 GHz model - but you probably won't benefit from the performance boost, just like my Mini has now 1 GB of 400 MHz DDR RAM running at 333 MHz). And yes, the new iMac uses the same RAM as the older one.
I'd suggest you visit an Apple store and see the new iMac for yourself though. Your iMac still seems like a pretty good computer, and the 2.4 GHz processor and/or Radeon HD 2600 card may not warrant the upgrade price, especially if you don't like the glossy screen (which is reportedly much glossier than the MacBook's display).

  • Is it possible to hang/mount the new IMAC on the wall???

Just curious...just go one for my fiancee' and was wondering if it was possible to mount it to the wall to save a little space??? thanks Mike

No. Unlike the first two iMac G5 versions, the new iMac Intel CD---like the G5 iSight version it follows--- cannot have its stand removed from the back and is not VESA compliant.
Too bad, if you ask me, because the iMac would have been perfect if you could wall-mount it...

  • I have a problelm- I am planning on buying a new iMac in March. I would like to everything in my old iMac. The problem is that I believe I have malware in my old iMac. Is there a way to transfer the material to the new iMac without the malware?

  • Did the new MBA fix the overheating/freezing problem??

    hi everyone!
i'd like to ask anyone who has tried out the new MacBook Air: have they fixed the overheating/freezing problem??
i've had 3 MBAs over the 3 years (all different versions) and they were all overheating - i.e. when i was using them for a while and had more internet pages/applications opened they started to get really hot and at some point the computer slowed down to a point where i could not work anymore and had to just close it and let it cool down for a while. playing a youtube video without problems is almost impossible.
i love all the other features of the MacBook Air, but this slowing down is super annoying, especially for someone who spends hours at a computer daily.
plus the other day my friend who has a MacBook Pro asked why my computer was so loud - i never noticed but the fans are just so noisy compared to hers.
so please let me know what are your experiences with the new one compared to the older ones.
    thanks a lot!

I have the high end 13" macbook air that came down to about 2000 cnd. It overheats quite frequently though. I find it the strangest when I am only watching netflix on safari. maybe 2 tabs opened with mail and preview app opened... Dont even have to mention other things.. it heats up when I am coding on Coda.. using photoshop (2 files opened)..
Another thing is that sometimes it doesnt register to the current time immediately. After I wake it up from sleep, I have to wait abotu 3-5 secs until the cursor can respond and the time is corrected (usually the time is at when I closed the macbook air.)
Have you guys heard of these problems?
    Thx

  • Should I buy a Macbook Pro or the New iMac 21'. I have the new iPad and an iPhone 4.

I need to buy a new computer soon and obviously im buying a mac. im not sure which mac I should buy. Im undecided between the new iMac or the Macbook Pro 13. Please help.

Fundamentally, do you need a portable system or a desktop system?  Do you want something that can move around your apt/house and out and about with you? Once you decide that, the decision is easy.  Since you already have an iPad, maybe an iMac would provide a broader coverage solution (I happen to like the larger iMac screen).

  • How much faster or better is the new iMac... really?

    Hello all,
I have a 20" 2.33Ghz C2D iMac w/256Meg video RAM, and 3Gig of RAM. I understand that many factors come in to play when you compare the over all speed of a computer. How much faster, over all, is the new iMacs over the system I have? Has anyone tested the two next to each-other yet? I am sure the new one is faster in some ways, but is it really lots faster in over all performance, or just a little?
    Apple //GS

    Hi Patrice,
Within Apple’s slim new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, based on our new Kepler-class architecture, which helps make them up to 60 percent faster than last year’s models. This follows news in June that Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses Kepler GeForce GPUs.
The new 27-inch iMac offers the GeForce GTX 660M as its base GPU, with even faster GeForce GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680MX GPUs available. The 21.5-inch model comes with the GeForce GT 640M GPU, with an available upgrade to the GeForce GT 650M GPU.
    http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/10/big-imac-news-less-heft-more-kepler/
So, any Apps that use the GPU to assist GPU should be much faster.
Though I don't see it listed here, it may be too new, I suspect it may be supported...

  • Mounting the new imac (late 2012)?

I need to mount the new Imac (prob the 27 inch) on an arm.  I found one reference that said there wasn't going to be a vesa mount.  Does anyone know if it will be possible to mount this thing?  I cannot use the stand.. it has to go on an arm for me.
    Help!!

I was ready to buy the new iMac 27 inch and found out there isn't a way to remove the stand and use a monitor arm! So I am not buying the new iMac.
    Just FYI.

  • How Would The New iMac Compare To My Old PPC G5 Power-Mac?

I'm a bit out of the loop as far as the performance increases since I bought my G5 Power-Mac several years ago and if I'm honest, never really understood them that well anyways...
What I'm wondering is how the new iMac would compare to my old Power-Mac and would it be able to do what I need it to do. Here's what I have now (from my system profiler). A PowerMac PPC G5 (1.1) 2.3ghz Dual CPU. Bus speed 1.15ghz. It also has 4.5GB of Ram... I also have a dual monitor set-up but would obviously get rid of one if I bought the new iMac. The display I would be keeping would be my 30" cinema display. Would I be able to continue to use that monitor without too much hassle in a set-up with the iMac?
Any help, opinions or insights appreciated!

I have a 2.0 GHz dual core (PCIe slots) Power Mac G5 (the +late 2005+ model). It has 4GB RAM and the low-end 128mb NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE. The max is 16GB.
I also have a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo 17-inch white iMac. It has 2GB RAM and ATI Radeon X1600 (128mb) for the built-in graphics. The max RAM is 3+ GB.
Both run Leopard. Both have two displays. I mostly use the iMac currently and another family member uses the Power Mac G5. These two configs feel about equal. Some apps seem to be better optimized for Intel these days. Other older apps are PowerPC-based apps, so the G5 runs those better without the need for Rosetta on Intel. In day-to-day use, I can't say that one is better than the other.
But that's with an older Intel iMac (the low end model even when it was new). For your comparison, the current high-end iMac will undoubtedly be faster. However, with both running Leopard, I don't think the new iMac will be a +quantum leap+ in better performance. Whether the actual difference is worthwhile to you will depend more on how you use your Mac. Once Snow Leopard comes out, with it's better optimization for Intel and more efficient use of multiple processors (and other technical improvements), the story may be different.
With the new iMac lineup, you can use a 30" Cinema display (as an extended desktop) with an adapter off the Mini DisplayPort. It says so on the specs page
    http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html
"Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI via adapter."
"Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display."

  • Using my existing HD with the new iMac's USB 3.0

    Hi,
I’m planning on buying the new iMac as soon as it comes out but I noticed that it doesn’t have any USB 2.0 ports and I was wondering if I would be able to use my existing external hard drives since they are USB 2.0.
Will I be able to use my existing USB 2.0 HD with the new iMac using the USB 3.0?
    Thanks a lot

Yes. USB 3.0 can be used by devices and connections from USB 2.0

Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!
