Do the new Time Capsules have a different design?

Having had my TC die, but out of serial number range for the paid repair, I did the job myself and it now works again - but for how long?!!
The fault was obviously overheated capacitors, the same as the articles on the internet show, so I'm not sure whether it is sensible to buy a new TC.
If the basic flaw has not been fixed with a new design that avoids these capacitors overheating then the same thing will likely happen again.
Does anyone know if the new ones have been redesigned?

Millions of later generation Time Capsules have been sold and we hear of a failure having to do with the power supply every once in while. Based on that, my opinion would be that the design is just fine. If my memory and observations are correct based on forum posts, I would also say that over the last 18 months, a higher percentage of AirPort Express devices fail than Time Capsules, even though the Express is a much simpler device.
Having looked inside at both an early generation Time Capsule and a later generation Time Capsule, there are definitely different types of capacitors used. Not having a schematic of the circuitry, I can't tell you whether there were any design changes in later versions in the power supply section or not. That would be a question for the Apple product engineers.

  • Why doesn't the new time capsule have a thunderbolt port?

it seems absurd apple wouldn't have put a thunderbolt port on the new time capsule.....what am I missing here?

It is a network device.. there is no local connection.. and never has been. Thunderbolt chipsets are super expensive still.. which is why the cheapest external thunderbolt drives are still far more expensive than USB3.
If you put a thunderbolt into the TC it is then a local drive and no internet connection.

  • Does the new time capsule have the same power issues as the old one?

I loved the idea of having my wi-fi and back-up all in one unit so I slashed out on a 2TB Time Capsule in February 2013.  Over the last three of four months we have been experiencing problems with the wi-fi (keeps dropping).  Took it in to the local Apple Store and was told that it is an issue with the power supply in the unit and that this is not uncommon.  I am reluctant to shell out $400 for a replacement Apple Time Capsule if it has the same issues and will need replacing in two years.  Does anyone know if the new designed Time Capsule has been improved to remedy this problem?  If not, any suggestions for a better designed alternative?
    Thanks.

If you have applecare or still have possibility of buying applecare on a computer or apple TV then the TC would still be covered.
The store has jumped to a conclusion but I am not sure the evidence is pointing that way.. the power supplies in Gen4 were pretty ok for the life of the unit.
However they did have some serious board issues start to show up at around 2year mark.. the board was poorly soldered.. and some have got it working by the oven bake method..
    See https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/gen4-a1409-issues
IMHO it is better to figure out a way of getting the TC under applecare and getting it replaced by apple. If it really does prove to have wireless issues.
I would do a full factory reset of the TC.. and redo the setup again.
And if you run Yosemite.. I would be blaming the computer first.. and only the TC if everything else (with the computer isolated) also has issues. Yosemite itself can trigger issues in other network devices.
I would also say wireless is a strange beastie.. people next door could have setup a new wireless router designed specifically to overwhelm the issues your router caused them.. router wars..
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2. Fixed wireless channels.. try 11, 8, 6 for 2.4ghz and try a low channel like 36 or 40 and then a high channel.. 149, 165. Whatever is available in your area for 5ghz.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.

  • On the new time capsule a/c, if you lay the device on its side does it change its signal strength in any way? Does the time capsule have to stand up-right all the time?

On the new time capsule a/c, does the time capsule have to remain up-right? Can the time capsule lay on it's side and still function?
    Thanks

Please remember that the Time Capsule's antennas are up at the top of the device, and have been designed to work best in that position.
In addition, the air flow pattern to help cool the internal electronics has been designed to work best with the Time Capsule in a upright position.
When I lay the Time Capsule down for 30 minutes, it is noticeably warmer. I can't tell if wireless is affected that much since my home is not that big.
You could try laying the Time Capsule down, but my recommendation would be that you do not do this. You may get a different opinion from another user, so stay tuned.

Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Will the new time capsule back up Windows on an iMac running Parallels Desktop?

Windows home version MSBackup, cannot backup to network drives.
That was a little bonus from Bill for those who didn't fork out for Pro or Ultimate.
Like people with home versions would never need to backup to network drives.. oh no.. never!!
You need to mount the hard disk in windows for it to work.
It will help a lot if you load the airport utility for windows into your windows OS.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1547
Open windows explorer and type the network address of the TC.
\\TCname.local (where TCname is the correct network name of the TC).
The TC should have all names that are windows compatible.. ie
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is just wrong. It is too long, it has spaces and it has apostrophe which is illegal.
A good name for the TC is TC
The default hard disk share name of data is fine. It should not be Time Capsule or anything again that is over long .. has spaces or is otherwise incompatible with windows.
A good name for the TC wifi is TCwifi
Then you can mount it \\TC
typing that directly into the address bar of windows explorer.
There are still issues with windows naturally and running in parallels I have no idea what other issues might come up.
Tell me if you have issues.. but you will need most likely to check the network.
Open a command window and ping the TC by name and by IP address. If IP address works just mount by IP.
\\10.0.1.1 for example .. and that is the default TC IP address when in router mode.
If you still cannot access the TC my recommendation is to use a USB drive and use that.. it is 10x easier and more reliable than mixing Mac and windows backups on the TC.

  • The new Time Capsule is amazing

I just got my new Time Capsule with 2TB storage. It replaced the previous generation Time Capsule, again with 2TB of storage.
In my network I have a Retina Macbook Pro (early 2013 model) and a 11" Macbook Air (mid 2013). My internet connection is 150Mbit/sec download and 5Mbit/Upload.
With the previous Time Capsule my rMBP would achieve a maximum of 15MB/sec download and my MBA 16,5/sec.
Now, with the new Time Capsule, my rMBP achieved a whopping 17MB/sec!!! I still haven't tested the MBA, but I am confident it can achieve up to 18MB/sec (my maximum download speed).
I can only say that I am amazed how good the new Time Capsule is. Kudos to Apple!

The Gen1 hard disk was a noisy beast although you would have to be up close to hear it still. Modern slow green drives are much better and run cooler.
The new TC runs the standard WD green drive.
See the review here which has a tear down included.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
The problem in Gen1 was a philosophy and a take over by the Interior Decorators at Apple rather than the Engineers. The excellent fan control built into the unit was dismissed as Overheated Engineer Imagination.. OEI for short. The fact that they stuffed a hard disk and power supply into a box slightly bigger than the Extreme.. had nothing to do with subsequent problems.. gollum.. gollum.. according to the Interior Decorator department. Engineers did actually calculate the reactor melt down temperature and turned on the fan to prevent said event.. they turned it on at 100% speed and 100% noise. Because it was seconds away from disaster..
Gen4 the design finally used the fan properly and offers some proportional control.. but you cannot expect no noise out of a plastic box dissipating 30W when it is doing the full job, backups, routing, wireless, gigabit. It still fails in having no fresh air inlet. So stand it on feet to stop the heat build up underneath.
During normal duties though and in normal weather.. you will hardly ever hear it.

Can I use the new time capsule running 10.68 on my Imac?  I thinking of buying my first Time Capsule and wanted to get the new one.  Is it reqiured for me to upgrade my OS first?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can use the Time Capsule with your iMac. The problem is that you need AirPort Utility 6.3 to set up the Time Capsule, and it needs OS X 10.7 or later.
If you have an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, you can connect the Time Capsule to the power adapter, open Settings > Wi-Fi, and set up the Time Capsule through it. Then, you will be able to connect to the Time Capsule.
If you haven't got any other device, upgrade OS X. Open the Mac App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. While it's being downloaded, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
When the download finishes, the Mountain Lion installer will appear, so follow its steps. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, install AirPort Utility 6.3, open it in /Applications/Utilities and follow the steps to set up the Time Capsule

You are in the typical catch22.. you cannot use the TC without setting it up.. you cannot set it up without Lion.. so you can install the latest utility.
Do you have any reasonably current iOS devices.. they can run the iOS version of the utility.. that will allow you to set up the TC.
Or invite a friend with a laptop running at least Lion
Or take the TC back and get a plain USB hard drive and backup to that.

  • How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

  • What is the difference between the new Time Capsule and the old Time Capsule other than capacity?

Trying to figure out what else is new on the Time Capsule announced today.

This is some info that was found in regards to the newly released Airport Extreme.  I would imagine that this would carry over to the new Time Capsule as well...
According to the FCC reports, there is a significant difference in the power output of the g/n radios at both 2.4 and 5ghz.
Follow the links, then select the "Report" for each.
