Do USB chargers have to be apple specific??

having a disagreement with a mate who claims that those cigarette socket car chargers and wall usb chargers have to be apple specific because of some "special chipset" as he puts it.
I always just thought it depended on how much power the usb output had whether it be 1.2 amp, 2.1 amp etc....
This probably makes no sense as it was hard for me to wrap my head around it also.
hope someone can clarify

The fact that Apple doesn't make a car charger, but does sell third party chargers in the Apple store, might provide a clue. http://store.apple.com/us/iphone/iphone-accessories/car-audio
I would be particular about the brand - something respectable and known such as Belkin, for example, and Jim-Bob's cables, but overall yes you can safely use third party car chargers.

  • Do Apple Wall Chargers Have Unique Serial Numbers?

I was wondering if Apple wall chargers have unique serial numbers, because a lot of "OEM" ones out there do not. I am in resale, not truly as a company though. I need to find a legit way to get wall chargers & USB cables that are true Genuine apple, without having to pay the outrageous price of $29.

*Hi everyone, I am new to Apple world and have just acquired an iPhone 3G 8GB.*
*I love the phone and have had no major problems as yet, although I have one niggle.*
*I have had smartphones before, and previously purchased an in car USB charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket and then into the phone. The in car charger has worked on every other phone I have owned, but with the iPhone, it won't charge it. Has the iPhone got to have a special charger with a different output or something? I have also tried it with several iPhone leads to make sure that wasn't the problem, but no joy.*
    *Any help appreciated.*
    *Thank you*

If you just bought the iMac and the Sjuperdrive take the superdrive back and get a refund. The by any other brand external DVD drive that connects by USB and try that. Most come with a Y USB cable to allow you to connect to 2 USB ports to supply enogh power to the drive IF Needed.
Or take both back and get a refund on both, you have 14 days to return it no questions asked, and buy another iMac and some other brand external DVD drive.

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.

  • "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled." HELP!

When I plug in my son's iPad I get this message "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled." I only have one charger for this iPad all my other chargers are for iPhone 4s. I have pluggerd it in different outlets around the house and the iPad will not charge. When I plugged it on my lap top to back it up it gave me the warning message. HELP!!

I have the same problem on my Air. The message first came up while my iPhone was connected to it for some time. Since then, it pops up ALL THE TIME, whithout anything being connected to the USB port, at what appear to be random intervals that vary between about one hour and a few seconds. I have tried resetting the SMC and  the PRAM, but no results. A quick search revealed that thousands of users are facing this problem, but Apple has yet to provide a solution. Please help!

  • ITunes 11.0.3 asks for password again and again, have re-done my credit card details, have changed my Apple ID password, tried to log in and out of iTunes, none of thos seem to work, just keeps happening without end, please help

I have tried to re-install iTunes 11.0.3 at least 6 times.
I have also downloaded iTunes 11.0.3 at least 5 times.
I have changed my Apple ID password.
I have downloaded (again, I've done that many times) iTunes 11.0.3, then I switched off the iMac, then restarted the wi-fi modem.  Switched on the iMac, loaded iTunes, same problem.
I tried to just switch off the wi-fi, did the same as point above, same problem.
Even tried to change the system date to 2038, this only seemed (although I doubt it) to fix the "not responding" issue which I had this morning.
The Apple ID password issue, where it asks me for the password loads and loads of times (probably 50 times or more), one after the other has been happening for about 3 days now.
Here is a copy of my message problem:
iTunes Problem, can't seem to find a solution online.
I am running OS X 10.8.3 on an iMac, have just loaded iTunes 11.0.3 a few days ago.
Firstly, I'd open iTunes and it would immediately say it was not responding, I'd have to force quit, try again, re-boot, try again etc.  I tried re-installing iTunes, changing password, everything to no avail, then changed my date to 2038, and voila it started responding (no, don't ask me, I just read in online and was desperate enough to try it).  Of course, I don't believe that this actually helped, I would like to know what did help or if there is something specific one needs to do to fix this.
I have not been able to get rid of this problem:  Whenever I try to make a purchase it asks for my Apple ID password, dozens of times until I give up and press cancel, cancel, cancel.
Why does it do this?  I don't want to purchase anything because I can't keep typing in my password again and again.  I'm not exaggerating.
As I mentioned, I have tried to re-install iTunes, about 6 times, and I changed my password.  I still get the same problem.
Also, my iTunes still looks like the classical iTunes and doesn't have the new interface.
Has anyone experienced this and was able to fix it, or does anyone know what the problem is?  Please help, I'm at my wits end.

Because too much time has passed I can't edit this into the prior comment, but here is the info regarding reverting to iTunes 11.0.2 (assuming you do have a time machine backup) from https://discussions.apple.com/message/22057703#22057703

    Repairing permissions doesn't fix it.
I reverted to the previous version, 11.0.2.
    1. Quit the new crash-prone iTunes.
    2. Delete the app.
    3. Restore v. 11.0.2 with Time Machine.
    4. In your iTunes folder look for a folder called "Previous iTunes Libraries", find the latest one.
    5. In the iTunes folder itself you'll see "iTunes Library.itl", delete it (or compress it and save a copy for later just in case.
    6. Copy the newest .itl file in Previous iTunes Libraries to the iTunes folder and rename it "iTunes Library.itl".
    7. Launch the older version of iTunes.
My crashing has seemed to have ceased with a revert to an older version. I noticed today that the newer crashing iTunes had been launched for hours but not playing anything, when I played internet radio it crashed within 5mins, fed up I reverted to an older version.
Btw, a simpler way to do this is to revert to older iTunes app, then hold Option when it launches and choose an older library.

  • I appear to have two separate Apple IDs and have purchased music under both.  Is there any way to consolidate the accounts into one?

I appear to have two separate Apple IDs and to have purchased music under both of them (one is my husband's email account, the other is mine).  Is there a way to consolidate them, or is it possible to make the purchases made under two separte IDs downloadable on the same device(s)?

Not at this time. There is no way to merge two Apple IDs or be signed into the iTunes Store with more than one Apple ID at a time on an iOS device. However, you can USB sync the music to more than one device at a time, no problem. As long as all the music is on the same computer.

  • "Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one  or more of your USB devices have been disabled.

Here is the total error message:
"Because a USB devce was drawing too much power from your computer, one
or more of your USB devices have been disabled.
To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much
power has been disabled. Other devices may have also been disabled.
When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB
    devices will be enabled again."
Now in contrast to every other thread on this i get this error message eveytime i connect my soundcard (interface). Not when i start up the mac or anything, just when i connect the sound card. (the soundcard does not have its own power source but note that this has never happened before and i have had this soundcard for about a year!)
It deactivates so i cannot use it.
    I have tried:
Connecting the soundcard to my mothers mac -> it worked!
Connecting an external harddrive to my mac -> it worked!
so basically, i can't be the soundcard or the cable and it cannot be the mac USB port?
I don't know what to do! i really need this to work! anyone got an idea??
