Do we need iphoto 11?

Do we - as Aperture users - need iphoto? Are there any additional features Aperture is lacking?
What I already found out is that a couple of slideshow themes are only available with iphoto. Anything else?

In iphoto it is obviously possible to see comments and manage your fb and flickr photos. I haven't found such a feature in Aperture 3.1 so far.
Facebook comments work just like iPhoto in AP 3.1 complete with friends pictures. If you have Facebook albums managed in Aperture 3.1 you'll get any posted comments as soon as they re-sync. Kinda nice for someone who doesn't hate Facebook with a passion
Flickr comments don't seem to appear though. Not sure they do in iPhoto 11 either.

  • Do I need iPhoto 08 to see and use the mobileme features?

I currently have the iPhoto (ver 6) that came with my Mac Pro. I have a lot of expensive photo editing software on my mac that I do graphic design with so spending $80 on the iLife upgrade seems like a waste of $$ to me. I would however like to use the Mobile Me icon that appears in the Mobile Me demos to move photos to and from my iPhone 3G as well as the Mobile Me website. Do I have to upgrade to iLife 08 to get this or can I make this work with iPhoto 6?
    Thanks for your help!
    Will H.

iPhoto does not need to be part of this at all, but if you want it to be then you'll need iPhoto 08.

  • I have all the documents, but can't locate my discs - need iphoto and can't get without the original.

I have all the documents, but can't locate my discs - need iphoto and can't get without the original.

If you buy used you have to be careful.  I am not sure what software came with which system versions and which computers but the iLife application history is complex.  If you end up looking for "original" discs such as those that came with your computer, make sure iPhoto was part of it, and make sure the discs you buy are really identical to the ones for your computer model.  A lot of people sell gray colored discs as installer discs, but the versions are machine specific so getting any old Tiger installer may not work on your computer.  Unfortunately the universal Tiger installer may not have iPhoto. Maybe somebody more familiar with the iPhoto history can provide specific advice.
An alternative is to look for a used iLife series that will work on your computer.  Again, this will have to be used.  Apple's staying ahead of the curve basically means those of us with old machines are left to fend for ourselves as best we can.

  • Complete newbie.. do i need iphoto?

we got my daughter an ipod video 30 gb... but we are all newbies... she wants to download photos.. do we need different software? or is it ready to go? i can't seem to tell.

    avengermom:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No you don't need iPhoto. You can place the photos you want to upload to the iPod in an aptly name folder, I use Nano Pics, located where every is good for you. Then in iTunes under the Photo section, navigate to that folder and select it for syncing with the iPod.

Mac OS X does not offer a Clean install option.    If by clean install you mean erasing the system, that is not recommended unless:
    1. You bought a used/refurbished Mac and there is software on it without any accompanying discs, and it is older than July 20, 2011 in model release:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6413
Or if it is at or newer, then erase it if it has applications installed that would not have been prebundled with it and you have no CDs for those applications.
You don't want someone else's software keys, or accounts, or to be running unlicensed software.  At and newer Macs offer a built-in internet restore for their software with a command-R boot that lets you erase the system with Disk Utility, and then install from the internet the latest operating system.
    2. You have a hardware issue and want to eliminate possible software issues as the cause when troubleshooting a problem all at once.
Issues affecting a new install have to be isolated before you attempt it.   Unless you know it is software or hardware, erasing may only mask other problems.

  • Photocasting - do I need .mac ?  do my recipients need iphoto 6 ?

    Folks
I've had a quick look but didn't find the exact answers to the following questions :
    1) Do I need a .mac account for Photocasting to work ?
    2) Do my recipients need iPhoto 6 ? Can I Photocast to an XP computer ?

Yes. You need to publish to a .Mac account.
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/features/photocasting.html
Your viewers need any RSS software or compatible browser. If they are Mac users your image files can be stored in their iPhoto 6 Library.

  • Need iPhoto 8 or 9 for older iMac

Installed a copy of Snow Leopard on my mother-in-law's 2007 computer, but had to wipe the HD, which as corrupted to do so.  I already tried to use her older bundled software to custom install the iPhoto software, but no luck.  The install program gives a message saying that it cannot install this software and shuts down.  What are my solutions to getting iPhoto back on this computer?  Is there somewhere that I can get the older version of iPhoto?  App Store will not let me install iPhoto 11 on the computer.

Your mother in law's iMac came with iLife 08 installed, iPhoto 7.  You can use the demo version of  Pacifist to install from the those disks. The run the appropriate updaters to get to 7.1.5 from Apple's Download site.
Note:  iPhoto 7 will not run on Mavericks and can't order prints, books, etc. from Apple's print store. So if you think she might want to upgrade to Mavericks or order print products she'll need iLife 11 which will be about $40 at Amazon.com.

  • How to find iPhoto2 files for backup and need iPhoto upgrade advice

    I have two questions:
I am working on what I guess is an older version of iPhoto (2.0.1). I need to back up all my photos on CD and am having a hard time figuring out what directory to go to in order to backup everything. I've gone to the iPhoto library and copied the directory on a CD, but it was empty. The actual images seem to be hidden somewhere. I also use Photoshop CS and would like to use the backup images at a later time, so I'd like to be sure the actual jpegs are there and not just thumbnails, etc.
Secondly, what should I upgrade to? Our son has taken video and I can't seem to access it with other programs once uploaded to iPhoto.
    Your help is much appreciated!!

  • Need iphoto help please

Hello. I am currently running 10.5.4 on my 1.8ghz single processor g5. I just purchased a new mac pro, and I would like to copy my photos from my old iphoto to my new iphoto. (I do not have the new computer set up yet—I would like first get some ideas on the best way of transferring/backing up).
I have a little bit of an issue. I think I screwed around with my iPhoto folders a little because I changed the location of my photos to my external drive and I think I may have messed around with the folders. In my "pictures" folder, I have three main folders. I think I created the first two separately for some reason—maybe as an attempt at a backup last year?
    1. 2001-2006 photos
    2. 2007 photos
    3. iphoto library
Basically, I have currently have over 10,000 photos in my iphoto library. I was hoping to archive some of the older photos so that I do not have to transfer all of the 10,000 photos to my new computer. What is the best way of doing this? I still want to keep the old photos, but I figured I would burn them on a DVD to archive, but I no longer want them in my iphoto library. I want to be able to pick and choose which photos I am going to transfer to my new computer. In iPhoto, I have all of my photos categorized into folders, but it doesn't seem to categorize them like that in the iphoto library (it does it by rolls?). It also contains folders called "modified," "originals," etc. Any idea how I can for example choose that "Tara's Wedding" Photo folder can be archived, but not transferred?
I apologize for the lengthy post, but I want to be sure I am getting my point across. Thanks so much in advance for your help!
    Regards,
    Dayna

    1. You need to do this in iPhoto and not through the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder. The changes you make in iPhoto will be reflected there but Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    2. Simply: Any photos, albums or folders of albums you want to archive: Select them in the iPhoto Window and use the Share -> Burn command to burn them to disk. This will make a “mini” iPhoto Library on the Disk so that if you need to access these files popping the disk into your Mac means it will show up in the iPhoto Window and you can drag them back to your Library there.
    3. Having archived the pics (and then tested the disks to make sure that all is well) put the pics you no longer want into the iPhoto trash and empty it (iPhoto Menu -> Empty trash. Tip: Do this in batches of about 100 or so. Iphoto baulks at trashing too many pics at a time). This removes the pics from the iPhoto Window and the Hard DIsk
    4. To move the Library to the new machine: Copy the iPhoto Library Folder from your Pictures Folder to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine. Then launch iPhoto. That’s all. +There’s no importing involved+.

  • I brought a 06 mac pro i need iPhoto and i can't found it

i need to no where i can get iphoto for my 06 mac pro running 10.7.5 lion

You would need to purchase the iLife 11 DVD, perhaps on eBay.

  • Why do I need iPhoto???

    it duplicates the photos;
    doesn't have a god way to see pictures and deleting unwanted (like windows photo viewer - simple and usefull);
    doesn' import automatecly from iPhone...
when importing is in the iPhoto library, we cant easly export to a external disk, etc..
I prefer synckink iPhone with the pictures folder an use image capture to import from iPhone.
    RR

if it doesn't duplicate the pictures why do I have a original file folder and a file folder, both with the same picture?
Why do you have two copies of the Photo? Why do you keep the version in the Pictures folder? Really? Why are you blaming iPhoto because you haven't a clue how iPhoto works?
after plugging the iPhone, I wait and wait and, it doesn't import automatically, do I need to do something?
You may have a point here because you know, it's really, really, really difficult to click on a big button marked 'Import'. I know it's difficult but still, millions of people mange, what a pity you can't.
And perhaps, just perhaps, iphoto doesn't automatically import because it doesn't assume that you want things imported. It allows you to choose what gets imported and what doesn't. Just a thought.
also the new files that I copy into the pictures folder don't sync/appear in iPhoto
Why would they? If you don't import them to iPhoto how do you expect them to show up in iPhoto. Let's face it, you're rather clueless on the subject.
yes deleting is easy, but the picture says in the iPhoto library folder
Not if you're doing it right. Obviously you're not.
really don't think is easy to export to external disk, it's much better to select a butch of picture from a folder cut/copy to disk.  When cut/copying from iPhoto , the pictures remains on the iPhoto library,
Perhaps you might take the time to learn. Start with the difference between a file browser and a database. I think if you manage that distinction you might have a chance of learning iPhoto.
But anyway, you're not asking any questions, just trolling for attention. Remember, if you don't understand iphoto, don't use it. As you're not asking any questions feel free not to post anymore examples of how little you know.
You have a nice day now.

I need a free download for iphoto for my Mac Powerbook G4 10.5.8 laptop anyone from a site that I can download it for free?

There's none. You need to either install it from the computer's original disks or buy an iLife 09 or earlier DVD.

  • HT4163 Need iPhoto 9.0 for Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I have an old macbook running 10.6.8.  I want iPhoto version 9 ('11), but all I can find in the app store is version 9.3, which only runs on Lion.  I want iPhoto for Snow Leopard.  I can see no reason why Apple has forsaken Snow Leopard. There is no reason why the App store can't have version 9.0 so both Lion and Snow Leopard users can buy it and update it to suit individual needs.  Does anyone know how to get version 9.0 for Snow Leopard online?

Just a follow-up.  I did purchase iLife '09 on eBay and it works smoothly. A few hiccups. I mistakenly did an "upgrade install" of OS X, twice.  "Upgrade installs" take a long, long time to do, and in the end, just don't work.  It turned out that the utilities menu that I needed to access in order to reformat and do a "clean install' was pushed right off the screen where I could not see it, due to a faulty video driver matchup on the install disk.  The result was that I wasn't sure what kind of install I was doing.
So, now I have a mini-Mac that works just like it used to, but really with no perceptible advantage to what I had before, just a few bucks lighter, and many hours of effort.  The good news is that my older mini-Mac (read the Apple fine print carefully on which Intel processors do and don't work) will run Snow Leopard, albeit a little slower than Tiger.  Hopefully, Apple technology and the various software upgrades required to browse the Internet will stay compatible with Snow Leopard for a while yet.  But the Apple mini-Mac takes the cake for the poorest backward compatibility I've run across since I began with computers in the late 1960s.
