Do we need separate Apple ID's?

The details:
Our family has 1 Mac desktop which has all our ITunes content under 1 Apple ID
Wife has iPod touch
Husband has iPod touch, but he set it up with a new ID
Daughter has iPad currently using same iTunes Apple ID
Son has Nano
Apple TV-1st gen
Time capsule
About to purchase a MacBook Pro
We want to be able to share apps but also play against each other or retain our own progress in games.  For these particular apps, do they need to be purchased separately under different apple ID's.  If so, how is that done with only one iTunes account?  If that is done, will we be able to have music and other media purchased under separate ID's accessible on the ATV?
We appear to share an iCloud as now we have eac other's apps? Is it possible to maintain one iTunes account and separate iCloud? We don't want ALL of each others apps, just some with the above taken into consideration.
I apologize for the long drawn out questions?  I have searched through the Q&A's but either I don't understand or see a solution that applies.
Please and thank you for any help you can give!

It can get complicated, but the short story is that you can mix content from multiple Apple IDs in the same family on both Macs and iOS devices. You can authorize up to five computers (Macs or PCs) for the iTunes content of a single Apple ID. The issue is going to be that only the Apple ID that acquired content;music, videos, games apps, books, etc, can authorize an update of the content. You can also sync each iOS device with unique content by making sure that each has a unique name. When you get any new Macs, you can share the contenet in iTunes to that Mac (up to your 5 computers), but you just want to sync your iOS devices to one Mac. If you sync an iOS device to a different computer, the device is first erased of any content synced from another computer.
So you can pool/comingle your content in one iTunes app; music, videos, games, apps, books, etc and then configure each individual device with just what the owner wants on that device. iTunes and the device will remember each unique configuration.

Do I need separate Apple IDs or email addresses for iMessage, iCloud, and Facetime?
Everytime I attempt to use my Apple ID associated with iTunes with iMessage, iCloud, or Facetime, it tells me: 'Unable to verify email because it is already in use'.  I've been playing around with it and find when I enter another email address other then the one associated with my iTunes account, it'll work.  So it seems that my Apple ID will log me into the cloud (or whatever it may be), but I need another email address for the messages to be sent to?  Perhaps somebody can clarify for me.  Thanks in advance!

  • Just got 4 new iPads, Do I need separate Apple IDs for each one?

Right now I have 3 iPods and 2 iPhones connected to my PC using 1 Apple ID.
Question: I just purchased 4 new iPads. One of the iPads is for me and the 3 others are for my children. Should I setup the 4 new iPads under my existing Apple ID or should set up a new Apple ID for EACH of the new iPads?

It would be a good idea to set up separate apple ID's for each. One reason is just to avoid any confusion over anything such as icloud synchronisation. Spending on your credit card so maybe purchase gift cards for their accounts so they have some money to spend on apps. It could cause a few problems mainly due to icloud, photos syncing, password synchonisation and it only takes a few minutes to set up an account. If you don't want to put a credit card on their accounts you can set it up without an account but i'd suggest using a computer to set it up as in my experience i couldnt set up an account without a card on an iphone or ipad etc.
you could put your card on their ipads and enforce a restriction on buying apps where you would need to enter a code to authorise it.
    Hope it helps

  • Need separate Apple IDs

I need to set up separate work and personal Apple IDs, with my work email on both accounts (as rescue on the personal one and primary on the work one). I do not want to use the same payment details for both. I have separate iPhones for work and home, so this is on two devices.

  • Do all my macs need separate Apple IDs?

iTunes 10 (and before) treated the three Macs in our family separately.  Each computer (operated by a different family member) could maintain podcast subscriptions separately.  All purchases for these three computers went through a single Apple ID.  iTunes 11 has jumbled them all together.  We can't manage subscriptions individually anymore.  Is the Cloud combining all three together because they all use the same Apple ID?  Do I need 3 different IDs to allow each of us to customize our subscriptions individually?

Do u have to have a new apple ID for each person, if so everyone in my family will have to get one. Right now we all share the same id and I cloud and it is messing stuff up. Will u be able to get things back that u already bought if everyone gets a separate apple Id.

Only in Settings > iTunes & App Stores > here one purchasing Apple ID (apps, books, music can be shared), others should use their own Apple ID for all other Apple services.

  • My family has multiple iOS devices, all with 1 Apple ID. With iCloud coming, should I create separate Apple IDs for each member of my family?

    Hello,
Between my family, we have 2 iPhones, multiple computers, iPads, and an Apple TV ALL tied in to the same Apple ID (the one I created when I got my first device). With iCloud coming, I wanted to know if I need to create separate Apple IDs for each family member (for emails, contacts, calendars, etc.). For instance, I would like to share certain contacts and a calendar with only my wife, all media between all family members, and have home sharing so that I can play/stream content on my Apple TV. Will there be a way to have multiple and distinct me.com accounts and yet share the same Apple ID?
Apologies for being verbose — just wanted to give ample info/background.
    Thanks,
    Jay.

I happened to stop at the Apple store yesterday for a separate issue and had a discussion about iCloud. Seems like this is how iCloud works (also, there's another thread on this forum that explains it well).
Each member of the family can have their own iCloud ID, which will be used for Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Apps, Bookmarks, Media, Photos, etc. and having this content synced automatically with a Mac (computer). The iCloud IDs work in tandem with the associated Apple ID — so while you cannot have multiple Apple IDs, you can certainly have multiple iCloud IDs tagged with a certain Apple ID.
While all this makes sense from the iOS device standpoint, I'm unclear on how things will sync with a Mac computer, especially if the family uses a single iMac with multiple login IDs for various members. For instance, I currently have an iMac and iTunes content resides in my Public folder, which my wife can still access when she logs in with her login ID. I'm guessing that I'll be able to set up her iCloud ID using her login, set up my iCloud ID using my login, while both our iMac logins will retain the same Apple ID. This would take care of syncing Photos, Contacts, Calendars, etc.
Another (not sure if unique) problem I face is our Address Book — right now, we have one GIANT address book with different groups set up. Certain groups sync to her iPhone, while others to mine. Some contacts are common between both of us. I'm hoping that if she/I updates a common contact, then the change will be reflected in both our groups of contacts. I hope this makes sense — for instance, I update a contact named Joe, and he's on my group of contacts in my iPhone. Hope iCloud updates the master contact card for Joe on the iMac, which would then automatically trigger the update on my wife's group of contacts—that Joe also belongs to— leading to an update on her iOS device as well.
    Apologies for the lengthy response..

  • Can my family use 'find my iphone' for each other if we each have separate apple ids? recently had to create separate ones b/c we were getting each others texts/facetimes and i read this happens when you share an apple id.

Can my family still use the 'find my iphone' app from our iphones / ipod touch to locate each others phone if we have separate apple ids?  We were sharing a single apple id but recently we started getting each others texts/facetimes .. I read that this happens when you share an apple id.  Will we just have to sign in with the others' apple id to locate their phone ?

Use Find My Friends app instead.   Much easier to manage, and you won't need each other's id/pw's to do it.   They only need to accept your invitations and vice versa.

  • HT204074 My roomate and I have separate apple id's both have purchased music on iTunes  and have authorized eachother on our computers. What happens if he makes his computer one of my iTunes Match  devices? Will he still be able to use his music and mine

My roomate and I have separate apple id's and we both purchase music from iTunes Store on our own id's. we authorized eachother as users on our computers. I recently purchased iTunes Match. If he sets his MacBook and iPhone 4 as one of my devices (1of10) on iTunes Match will he be able to see his purchases and mine on his computer? Will I be as to see his? Can he still use his apple I'd? I'm new to this....
FYI I have iPhone 5 and windows vista my roomate has iPhone 4 and a macbook

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unfortunately, if Apple simply allowed people to log into different accounts and download content, everyone would be using everyone could share everyone else's content and bypass the need to purchase anything. To protect against this, they limit you to logging into a new account to once every 90 days.
If two or more of you, have different accounts and use only one computer, you should each have your own user account on the computer, to avoid the need to log in and out of iTunes.

  • HT1206 Lots of info about one user using multiple computers. What about multiple users with separate Apple IDs using same computer? Having problems getting my wifes new iPhone talking to her apple account on the computer we share (2 users)

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

  • Can you have 2 completely separate apple id's on a computer?

Is t possible to set up separate apple ID's on iTunes on my laptop?

If you want to keep all content seperate, you need seperate iTunes libraries.  The simplest way to accomplish this is to have seperate account on the computer.
This article is intended for users with multiple iDevices that are managed on a single computer, but the concept still works for what you want to accomplish.

  • HT204053 What are the pros and cons of 1) choosing to use the SAME Apple ID for iCloud services on one side, and purchases on the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore, on the other side; or 2) to have and use two separate Apple Ids for these "two sides

All is in the title, so I repeat it below with a better identation.
What are the pros and cons of
    1) choosing to use the SAME
Apple ID for iCloud services on one side, and
purchases on the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore, on the other side; or
    2) to have and use two separate Apple Ids for these "two sides"?
    P.S.
I have loads and loads of free podcasts in iTunes in my iMac, that are certainly more thant the 5 gigas the iCloud provides for free, so I don't want those to go to the cloud. But this is perhaps a different question...
Also need to mention that I have itunes on a mac, a pc and an iphone.
Sorry to look so silly with this question, but I don't get the "big picture".

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. • Help using family sharing and separate apple id's

My husband and I are currently using the same Apple ID and I would like to separate our devices by creating a new apple ID for one of us. What is the best way to do this? Will family sharing make this easier? I am not using family sharing currently. I want to make sure that the user with the new Apple ID doesn't lose everything.

Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library. Note that once done you cannot "share" apps under a single Apple ID. Each of you must purchase your own apps under your own Apple ID. When you decide to split up like this one of you will need to re-purchase the apps that they want to use.
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.
