Do we need to point clients to internal SUS with Caching on OSX Server

It's my understanding that devices (iOS and OSX) on the same local network will grab content from the Caching Service in OSX Server automatically without any configuration. If that is correct, do we need to point our managed clients to that server for OS updates anymore? Can't we just leave it to use Apples Public Update Servers, and then anytime when it's on this local network it will grab the updates from the server?

Caching Server 2 catches and mirrors recent traffic for iOS and OS X systems and will inherently flush out older material as space is needed — as the name states it's a cache, after all — where Software Update Server downloads and maintains copies of all updates for OS X.
When there are a number of OS X systems around, Software Update Server tends to be more predictable.  The updates are available.  With caching server, a barrage of iOS updates or a big OS X update might flush out the stuff you need, and it's off to the network to fetch it again.
The systems around generally have more disk space available than network bandwidth, so Software Update Server and Caching Server 2 are both in common use, or maybe Reposado, depending on local requirements.  If you have more network than disk, then you might make a different choice — at the price of disk space these days, the extra space is an obvious choice.
If there isn't enough disk space on a Mac available but you do have something that'll boot Linux, then Reposado has you covered.

  • ICal 10.6 client no longer syncing with 10.5 iCal server

Searched the forums and haven't found anyone with an answer yet.
We upgraded all our laptops to 10.6. The server is still at 10.5, running CalDAV server.
Since the upgrade of the iCal clients, they are no longer accessing the iCal server. Any ideas what settings need to be tweaked in the iCal clients to have them see and read/write to their accounts on the 10.5 iCal server?
    Thanks
    Jason

the same is happening to me.
All my cals have been syncing just fine. Upgraded my iphone os5. upgraded lion on laptop. And for some reason, now i'm opening ical today and trying to edit, i am suddenly getting URL errors. Also i cannot find a way in the new ical (with lion) to unsubscribe from things.
My iphone seems to be updating ok as it's syncing from the google cal server... but if i want to add or edit anything to my google cals in ical, it's not letting me do anything.
    Any ideas anyone ?

  • How do I setup a DNS record to point to an internal IP with a port.

I am trying to setup a DNS entry on my AD server to point to a web sever that I have setup to run certain services.  All of these services run through IIS on port 82 for example service A is internally 192.168.0.1:82/info/login and service B is 192.168.0.1:82/tech/login.
I am trying to give these services easy to use names like for example info.mycompany.com and tech.mycompany.com so that it is easy to access for the employees but I am obviously missing something because I have had no luck setting up anything.  My
company is still using SBS 2003 as it's AD and DNS server so I am working with flint and bear skin here.
I am also trying to do the same thing for the external access to these services but where as I have the internal address for these services I have the external static IP.  When using the external IP with the port from outside the network everything
works fine but I would like for it to to have a simple name identical to the internal names but accessible from the outside.  I frankly feel out of my depth on both of these issues and I would really appreciate any help that can be lent.  Thank you.

You cant set a dns record (that would be used by a browser) to point to an ip and port, srv records can but that requires the application to look them up.
To have  info.mycompany.com  point to 192.168.0.1:82/info/login you
would add a cname or A record to the dns pointing to that IP, then in IIS you would assign that dns name to the host headers. Also in IIS you would need to use
URL rewrite plugin with this you would setup a redirect for that host header {HTTP_HOST} to point to that link.

  • Use Oracle Client 8.0.5 with 8.1.7 Server

Can I use the Oracle 8.0.5/8.0.6 Client with a Oracle 8.1.7
    Server?

    Andre,
You can use the older version of the client, but you may not be
able to use/access the newer features of the 8.1.7 Server
(introduced since 8.0.5 of the Server). Also, the 8.0.5 client
was desupported on 01-MAY-2001, so there won't be any bug fixes
    if you have problems.

  • Dynamic internal table with repeated structure

    Hi,
I have a requirement, in which I need to create a dynamic internal table with the below structure.
Dynamic Int. table structure: fld1 and fld2.
If another internal table (say int2), contains 3 records, then my final output table should contain the below structure.
                    Value 1              Value 2              Value3
         fld1     fld2     fld1     fld2     fld1     fld2
If in case, the int2 table contains 10 records, then my final output table should contain the structure below.
                    Value 1              Value 2           .....              Value10
         fld1     fld2     fld1     fld2     .....     fld1     fld2
Please advice on how to acquire this. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Swetha.

You can do it...but it won't be  table... it would be some thing like
    itab
    ref1->  strycture (field 1  field 2 field 3)
    ref2-> structure (field1 field 4 )
    ref3-> structure (field5  field7 )
say Define a  internal table with a single field to hold  a reference of Data
Go on creating Rows of different structures and storing the address into the table... you can use RTTS for same
Use  the below link for RTTS (search on wiki for examples).

Just bought a 2tb external hard drive with the intention of moving my iPhoto data files to it. I have so much of my 500 gigs being used up by images and video. Questions: Will this foul up my iPhoto app?
Do I need to point iPhoto to this new location?
    Thanks!

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    Assuming a Managed Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • DHCP on 'hybrid' network - how to point clients to specific DHCP server

Moving computers off of a private 'hybrid' network to a different private network.
ISSUE: The clents will boot and ask for an IP from DHCP, problem is the 'hybrid' network runs a DHCP server with address range of 192.99.x.x  whereas the DHCP server we need to hit is on the 10.2.xx address range.  Is there a simple method to point
clients to a specific DHCP server?
Note: I have requested Network Srvcs to block UDP traffice on ports 67 and 68 for the address range of the 'hybrid' network.
Users still need access to the hybrid.
    Please advise,
    Many Thanks in advance

DHCP is rather a simple minded service. The client broadcasts out and the first guy responds. If you ahve two DHCP servers on the same subnet or wire, even if they have different IP addresses on that subnet, and they both have scopes corresponding to
the IP address of their interface on that subnet/wire, then they will offer DHCP services. DHCP won't give out an IP on an interface that the scope doesn't match the subnet.
For example, if I have a DHCP server with an IP of 10.200.1.200/24, and a scope of 10.200.1.100-150/24, then it will give out IPs on that interface. However, if that same DHCP server has an interface configured with 192.168.20.150, then DHCP will not give
out IPs on an interface configured with 10.200.1.100, unless there is a Relay Agent or IP Helper from the router or switch VLAN that is connected to that subnet. You can test this out yourself.
A separate VLAN for each subnet solves the problem because you are separating the two servers to hostg DHCP on their own, respective subnets.

  • Help with setting up pointing clients to server..

Okay, here is my situation. We have many macs on the network that currently don't login, open machines. We do have Blue Socket on the wireless, but otherwise the machines are all open. We want to get most, if not all, the macs to authenticate against LDAP or AD (preferrably AD). So I guess we need the Macs clients to go directly to the AD and authenticate, and also have the Macs controlled by the server (privledges, software update, printing, etc).
    Question one:
    Best way to approach this?
    Question two:
How do you get the clients to point to the server if they are getting their IP's from another DHCP server.
(would this be done in directory access via ????)
All the info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Server needs to trust *client* code without a certificate

    Here's a sticky security question
I want my server to trust that a client has performed the operation it says it has on some data held by the client (the client performs the operation to reduce server load). The server can supply code to perform the operation to the client, via a serialized object or RMI.
However, I don't want every client to have to register with the server (eg if each client had its own certificate this would be necessary)
Presumably something must happen as the client performs the operation to show that the correct (server generated) code was used.
If the object whic h knows how to perform the operation is sent using RMI with a public sign method and the server lends its own private key for the signing, in a private field of this object, can a malicious client discern the private key of the server simply by deserializing the object ? Encryption of the serialized object doesn't seem to help as a normal client needs to decrypt, so the malicious one can too.
What about if a private/public key pair is generated at the server and given to the client for signing? again the malicious client could sign using the key then perform a completely different operation.
What should actually be signed at the client end - the object sent which performs the operation ? the server needs to know that this signature proves that the code it sent was used.
would be interested in any ideas (this is for a university project)
    thanks to all
    John

    Hi John,
First, secure your coms : SSLv2 for example (1), so the further discussions between the "server" and the "client" will be sure (for a moment ;-).
Next, supply the "server code" from the server (only via the secured channel) to the "client" (2).
This code must be in two parts : "crypted data" and a "decryption module".
The "decryption module" must contains a "server's public key certificate" to use to decrypt the "crypted data" (3) that contains the "real code" and a "serial ID generated by the server".
Then the "decryption module" must start the newly decrypted "real code", to do the "server operation" on the "client data".
At the end, the "real code" sends back the "client result" and the "serial ID" encrypted with the "server's public key" (4).
    (1) SSL v2 creates a secure channel betwwen a server and a client (typically a browser), but at the intiative of the server and with no active part of the client, except to accept the chosen algorithm (I simplify here but it's schematically the point).
    (2) So with this channel (at the initiative of the identified server) the "client" is sure that the "modules" came from the "server".
    (3) This encryption has been made with the "server's private key", so only its "public key" can undo it : so the "client" and the "decryption module" are sure that the "real code" has not been alterated.
    (4) Same thing, but opposite side : only the "server's private key" can undo an encryption with its "public key" : the "client" is sure that only the "server" will be able to do something with its "result".
With this proposition, the "server" is sure that the "client" has done its "server code" on some data and has given back a "result". But it has no guarantees on the identification of the "client", only that it is the same from the beginning.
By the way, never "lend" a private key to another one, it is lethal to your security, since PKI is only a matter of trust on the public/private keys pair and its link with an identity (that's why Certificate Authorities are made).
Pleased if I have been of some help, Wild.

  • Need a new mac pro! Can I boot MacPro 6,1 (mid 2012) with an internal HD with OS 10.6 (Snow Leo)?

5 hours after reading here: (so much information that says "yes" "maybe" "no".....)
I want and have to change my actual MacPro (late 2007) to a newer one, because without my business is over.
The newest one (end 2013) is not possible, because my other hardware is too old for that one.
    (still need Firewire and Rosetta)
So I decided to buy an older "classicle" MacPro to put my 3 or 4 pieces of 2TB HDD in...
    ...... But I still need Rosetta, -> OS 10.6
    My question is:
Can I boot a mac 6,1 (mid 2012) with a Harddisk with 10.6, I take out of my old machine?
yes? anything to be aware or to update? (answeres here say mostly yes, sometimes, never ...)
For sure I am interested in the latest model..... but will it work?
If not:  I will buy a mac 5,1 (mid 2010).
Anything to be aware or to update, if I pull in my HD with 10.6 out of the old model from late 2007?
I don't want to downgrade to SL !!!!!!!
I just want the Possibility to boot internal from the original OS on the first drive and from 10.6 on a second drive !!)

For example the Mac Pro 2010 CAN run 10.6.4 or later BUT--
--- the last "Full Retail" 10.6 DVD conatins 10.6.3, which will not boot. You need a different Mac of just the right age to Install on, [starting from a Full Retail DVD, not a DVD from a different model] update to 10.6.8, then swap the drive over.
The assertion has been made that the 2012 model (which runs 5,1 firmware) is indistinguishable from the 2010 model (which runs 5,1 firmware) as far as Hardware and therefore as far as what Mac OS X it can run. EveryMac.com agrees that this model will run 10.6.4.

  • Enhancement Point Creation in Internal table

    Hi,
I want to create a Enhancement Point in Internal table declared in Customize Program.
This is more related to clarification of concept related to Enhancment Point.
But when i am putting the cursor inside the internal table and right click and Enhancment -> create ,it is giving me a message
that "Position of enhancement section/point statement is not allowed".
This means that we can't create Enhancement point or Enhancement Section inside the Internal table and solution is we can use
    only Implicit Enhancement point.
But the doubt is that i had seen SAP programs where they have created the Enhancement point in the internal table declarations.
    How that is possible then?
Please provide your helpful answers to get me more clarification on Enhancement Point/

I knew that it is possible with Implicit Enhancement point and i can implement that also.

  • OBIEE 11g on Linux - do I need a DB Client Installed???

I have installed an 11gR2 database on an OEL Virtual Machine, and on a separate VM installed OBIEE 11.1.1.5.
The RCU created the metadata required for BI - and out of the box, OBIEE works absolutely fine.
Now I'm trying to migrate a database and RPD etc from another (Windows) environment... and I'm getting errors:
"Oracle Error code: 12154, message: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified at OCI call OCIServerAttach. [nQSError: 17014] Could not connect to Oracle database. (HY000)."
This suggests that I need an Oracle Client installed on my OBIEE server, to enable it to connect to my DB server.
This seems odd - as RCU has created the metadata fine, and OBIEE is obviously using it? Do I really need a client now? Please could someone explain?
    Thank you!

Oracle client should be installed in the OBIEE machine, then add Oracle server information to tnsnames.ora file . Later copy the tnsnames.ora into OBIEE installed directory, for more information see the following link.

  • Why do we need to point at main program when activating include?

    Hi There Abapers,
Just a quick question, because I faced such issue when implementing OSS notes.
When activating objects I am asked to point out the main program for one of includes changed.
This inclde is used in ~30 programs.
As far as OSS note doesn't say a word about main program in fact I am not able to check it, I need to pick random program from a list up.
    The question is...
Why do we need to point at main program when activating include as we are only changing the sub-object (include)?
Will this 'random main program selection' bring some negative effects in the future?
Will be thankful for some expert opinion
    Kind Regards,
    P.

You should check all main programs when activating an include, to make sure that all main programs are still syntactically correct even with the changed include.
