Do you have a star shaped font?

I tried downloading a star shaped font online but it didn't seem to work. Can you suggest a place to find a simple star shaped font that I can use with iWeb on my new iMac?

HI Mike,
Try this ... in most applications, even Safari, you can use the Special Characters. In Safari, from the Menu, click Edit/Special Characters. A window will open. Where it says; View click: All Characters
Where you see: Symbols click the black arrow down. Click Miscellaneous Symbols. You should see several stars third row down. Now, just double click one of those stars and it will look like this; ✭
So wherever I bar is in the application you are using is where the "font" will appear.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, does an iTunes install go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Do you have hindi fonts for InDesign CS4 and if so how much are they?

Do you have hindi fonts for InDesign CS4 and if so how much are they?

Adobe does offer a few Unicode fonts that support Hindi  I'd expect that you'd be asking for Devanagari fonts, though. Have you ever done any Hindi typesetting? I mean, when we typeset English we don't do it in "English fonts" but in "Latin-script fonts."
There are two main classes of Devanagari fonts - the more common, older fonts where someone took a Latin-script font, erased the characters, and replaced them with Devanagari glyphs, versus contemporary Unicode fonts. The first class are wonky, hard to use, and quite common. If you're in-country you will find lots of ways to buy those kinds of fonts. You also can use them in InDesign without needing any scripts or plugins to turn on the World-Ready Composer. I find Unicode fonts to be much easier to use, to automatically compose according to proper rules regarding behavior of glyphs - but to use them in CS4, you'd need something like World Tools or IndicPlus. I'm a World Tools user myself but if you're going to be doing only Hindi work in CS4, I'd suggest that you look at IndicPlus first.
In short - it's deeper than it looks. If you want to tell us more about what you're trying to do, we might be able to give you better advice.

  • Do you have to outline fonts - PDF

    Hi all,
I normally outline my fonts to avoid any hassles but I have created a design that has very thin type and when I outline it makes it too fat - bleh!
So I would like to know if it is ok just to save as a PDF WITHOUT outlining the fonts if you are sending a file off to magazine, newspaper, printer and that they will not have a problem with missing fonts etc.
    Thanks!

    ScottWeichert wrote:
Live fonts do contain hinting which is sent to the RIP. Outlines don't contain any hinting. Hinting is exceptionally helpful at smaller type sizes. Outlines are really not the same as live type.
Every glyph in a font is a drawn character. Hinting smoothes display appearance. It could play a role in a RIP for a digital press, which relies on composite output and no separate plates for each ink. These devices treat fonts differently from dumb art, to compensate for a lower resolution output.
Let's assume that hinting for a particular glyph alters the shape of the glyph at different type sizes. To test, put the glyph on the artboard at 100 pt, and again at 2 pt. Duplicate the glyphs to a layer on top and outline. Verify that the shape of the outlines match the live font (coloring the outline something different helps).
To see if hinting affects the shape, the small shape must be enlarged proportionally to the larger glyph size, or the larger glyph shrunk proportionally to the smaller size.
Doing this, you may find that the two shapes match, or perhaps they don't. But it doesn't matter either way. When you outline fonts on output, the font doesn't get outlined, then resized - it just gets outlined. And the outline should be true to the vector shape of the glyph, no matter what the size is.
There are many arguments for and against outlining fonts. Here are both perspectives:
Advantages of live fonts in PDF output:
    1. The PDF looks worlds better on screen. This is an extremely important point. The live font looking proper means less questions and concerns, less banter is time saved.
    2. The font being in the PDF means that changes to the PDF are possible. Many printers prefer the fonts to be embedded whole instead of subset, and certainly not outlined. This can be a time saver. It can come down to the printer having to do one of three things - make a simple text change, try to match an outlined font to make the change, or wait on a new file. If the printer has the embedded font, the job can go to press faster.
    3. File size of PDF is smaller, making file transfer faster. It can be the difference between email or FTP in some cases.
    4. If something goes awry with the font in output, a simple preflight of the PDF can detect the problem. If the fonts are all outlined, you can't preflight the fonts, there aren't any - you have to hope Illy did a good job making the outlines.
    5. If the designer chooses to outline the native art, he has to save a duplicate copy. If he uses the flattener to outline fonts, he's increasing his output time. Preserving live text, you avoid these issues.
Advantages of outlined fonts in PDF output:
    1. Fonts are the bane of the printing industry. There are thousands upon thousands of fonts, some are good quality, some are garbage. There are many varieties of font formats. Together this adds up to a LOT of variables, and a lot of different ways text can get hosed. When you outline, the font variable is eliminated in one fell swoop.
    2. Some people - printers and designers alike - subscribe to the "bullet proof PDF" solution. Such a PDF is one that is completely normalized. It goes well beyond flattening transparency, or RGB and Spot – CMYK. It includes what AI calls expansion of art. All text is outlined. All strokes become fills. Any effects, patterns and symbols are converted to dumb art. Sometimes even gradients and blends are converted into images. Overprints can also be flattened (although AI cannot do this). The result is a PDF which is a complete mess from an editing standpoint, but less likely to wig out a RIP.
    3. Even if the designer does not outline, there is a good chance the printer will. He will probably not do it in Illustrator, more than likely text outlining would be an automated part of a separate workflow system. For example in the packaging industry, PDF files are often imported into Art Pro, with vectorize text enabled. So in that case, a designer who outlines his text beforehand might be choosing Illustrator's outline capability, instead of relying on the printer's outline capability.
    4. If the printer uses a vector trapping engine, any traps around text will be vector art, not fonts. Sometimes fonts mixed with vector traps can be problematic. Again if the printer feels like fonts are an issue, he's probably outlining the text before trapping.
    5. File integrity is an issue for some designers. Maybe they're afraid that a competing designer might snag a PDF. If the fonts are all outlined, figuring out the fonts is certainly possible, but it's harder than simply pulling up the font list in Acrobat.
    6. Some printers demand PDFs with all transparency flattened. If live fonts are retained in flattened PDFs, you can end up with live glyphs that are clipping masks for images. Such a configuration is similar to a live font in Photoshop output. Anyone who deals with fonts in Photoshop output knows that the construction is pretty hopeless (Photoshop can't even embed a complete font). It is best not to have live text playing the role of a clipping mask for contone data.
Anyway, there are two sides to the argument. One thing is certain – whether the text gets outlined or not – once it's RIPped, it's nothing but pixels. A live glyph vs. a vector shape should end up having the same pixel configuration on the plate.

If I'm understanding you correctly, those apps have stopped working and you are getting a message saying that they won't work with this version of Mac OS X when you try to open them. Is that right? If so, have you moved those apps out of their original locations? That is a bad idea, as it prevents them from being properly updated. If this is what has happened, what version of the system were you running before they stopped working, and what version are you running now, after installing the update that has made them stop working?

  • How would you do this "star burst" tutorial but have transparent backgrounds when you're finished

I been playing around with this tutorial and have a really fun project to apply it to, but I really need a transparent background so I can use it on a couple different backgrounds.  I tried just selecting the backgrounds and snipping them out, but can't figure out how stop the gradient layer at top from filling the entire background. I also tried just flattening it and cutting it out.  Really neither of those solution make for anything that look slick.  Is there another way to do this tutorial or way to not have a background at the end?  I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS4, thanks.

Yes, Trevor is correct about the antlines.  They are only an average of the selection.  There are lots of ways to create burst effects like this.  You could smooth out the jagged lines with a slight radial blur.  The only problem with it is that you either have to have what you want to blur perfectly centered in you document, or attempt to guess where the center is in the very small dialog box.  With the above image, I use the angle gradient tool set to noise.  This give a wild multcolored gradient, which I then converted to B&W, adjusted the contrast, put in screen mode, and manually masked the areas I wanted.
Jack you have some great workflow ideas.  Using the gradient tool that way was new to me, but what a great tool to have in your virtual Photoshop toolbox.  I had to hunt for how to set the Angle gradient to noise, but these two links did the trick for me:

  • I wonder if you have missed a free neat little plug-in?

I downloaded a plug-in from Noise Industries recently:
    http://www.noiseindustries.com
and in correspondence from this company it was mentioned that few movie makers had downloaded it.
It is part of an FXFactoryFreebie pack and I found is fabulously easy to use and a great deal of fun, thoughtfully and beautifully engineered, just, I might add, as it is with those of their other products I have tried.
I think perhaps the title may have put people off, and if you were deterred, stay with me for a few seconds.
    Star Wars.
I am wondering if some glanced at this and thought, "Oh, pooh, they already made that movie. I am not into sci-fi, even tho I could certainly do a better job than that Lucas guy." A natural thought. I thought it myself.
    However.
I used that slanting back and away rolling script for the opening of a family movie with my house standing in for Tara. ( It is nothing like Tara; it is a four bedroom house with a creek in back, standing on a slope overlooking the mortgage.)
Then I noticed something. The rolling script can be changed so that it runs absolutely vertically. Switch to some neat white fonts and you have a rolling opening title. Put it at the end of your movie and you have a fine looking credit scroll. You could insert expository text in the middle. (When the police arrested Blenkinsop it dawned on him that using a machete on his employer in front of 20 witnesses may have been a tad indiscreet.)
Boris has a fine rolling scroll, and there are others. I found this one very easy and pleasant to use and so I prefer it.
If you don't have it, take a look at it, and while you are there, eyeball their free Ken Burns plug-in, too.
Disclosure. Alas, I have no financial interest in this company.

Thanks a lot for this information !

  • Extra Channels - constant "You have lost connectio...

The Extra Channels are now driving me and my Mrs (her more than me) mad. From getting a very rare and occasional "you have lost connection" message and frozen screen, I am now getting this error cropping up almost every 10 minutes.
    My setup (now) is:
Infinity 2, 76 down, 17 up. Has been like this and 100% stable since installation in March.
Vision box connected by long ethernet cable (about 20m) to port 1 on the HH3
8-port Gigabit Switch connected to port 4 on the HH3
Wifi not enabled on HH3 - using Apple Airport Extreme/Time Capsule to use 5Ghz
TV/DVD in lounge and TV/WD box in bedroom connected to the Gigabit switch via Netgear Powerline
I originally had my Vision+ box connected to the switch via Powerline, but about 3 weeks ago (when this issue really raised its ugly head) my vision+ box threw up a message saying it was no longer connected to the internet, check connections, blah blah. Checking on the HH3 showed that the box indeed wasn't connected. Power cycling the box, HH3 and the Powerlines wouldn't remedy the situation, even though everything else was working 100% - TV would connect and stream Netflix, BBC iPlayer etc. So in desperation, I laid in a 20m ethernet from the Vision+ to the HH3. Initially, it still wouldn't connect, but after another couple of HH3 and Vision+ reboots, it connected and all was well - well, sort of.
From that point on, the "You've lost connection to this channel (VMC011) errors have been getting worse, until yesterday, you could barely watch a programme without the damned thing dropping out.
So, contacted Vision+ support in India - do all the usual stuff off his script, but it still hasn't resolved, so he said he'd escallate to 2nd line and they'd phone me today. No call (real surprise there).
So, call back, again have to do all the usual - power off the VDSL modem, HH3, Vision+, back on etc. He then claimed he'd 'reset' the service from his end and 99.9% sure that would 'cure' the problem. Well, guess what - it hasn't.
Since my call to India at 2pm, I have had disconnections at 14:26, 14:51, 15:16, 15:34 and now just at 16:06.
No amount of 'force resync' gets it working, nor does changing channel. The only thing I can do is to wait for the stream to restart, and it usually does with lots of pixellated/garbage picture for about 10 seconds or so before it clears and is watchable again. This 'outage' lasts between 2 minutes and 8 minutes.
Whilst this is happening, there is no continual stream of data on the LAN1 led on the VDSL modem - just the occasional short burst of data, which is coming from the Vision+ box as if I unplug it from port 1, this 'polling' stops.
This is going to be a nightmare once the sport starts - but I'm now getting aggro from my Mrs (who is recovering from Cancer treatment so tends to watch quite a bit of 'her' telly) as she quite rightly feels we are paying for a service we are barely getting. Because of the long and unweildy cable, I'm stumping up £120 or whatever to have my master socket/VDSL modem/HH3 moved adjacent to the TV as this was initially suggested as a fix, and BT are coming out Monday (supposedly) to do this work. But I can't believe this will effect a cure as I can happily watch Netflix or iPlayer without any issues whilst the Vision+ box is dropping it's stream.
I cannot believe this is the 'standard' of service that most subscribers are getting - and I believe this is an exchange or equipment issue, but all India seem capable of doing is reading dummy instructions from their script and 'resetting' the service (whatever that means) - it needs an engineer in the exchange with a data monitor to see what is going on.
Problem as I see it is that on our FTTC cab, there are not many subscribers (yet - I was No. 2 and an Openreach engineer was No. 1) and from what I understand, no other Vision+ subscribers, though that will probably change when Sport is activated. So because of this I doubt that BT are getting any other complaints.
The cynic in me thinks that the new HH4 is being released to cater for all the 'new' BT Sport subscribers as there is an issue with the HH3. Wonder if the HH3 is just not up to handling the multicast stream properly?
Anyone got any sure fire methods of escallating this?

Is there a way to change the text color of the fonts in ical from the standard white to black? It is hard to read some entries if the color of your calendar is light... I can't figure it out, as there is no "font" section in the ical preferences.

in fcpx 10.0.6, if you have a range selection, the export will be only that segment.
Hold down the R key and click-drag a range selection, or use the playhead to mark In ('i' key) and Out ('o' key) points.
    Select Share > Export File
    In the dialog, select Settings
    For Format: Audio Only
Audio File Format: I recommend AIFF, CAF or WAVE (depending on your target audio editor.) [AAC, AC3, and MP3 are "delivery" formats, not editing formats.]
then hit Next and save it.
I recommend setting a marker at the in point so you can easily line up the edited audio when you re-import it.

  • I asked a question about organizing bookmarks in my toolbar bookmark. I'm not happy with the "help" I got. I'm very frustrated. I need to talk to a technician. How can I get in touch with one? Do you have contact information?

Can't find out how to organize my bookmarks. can't do it after updating. I asked for help from a technician or to give my emails to one. She won't do it and I can't get help. So I'm starting over. It shouldn't be this hard. I need someone else to help me.

re: How do I organize and delete bookmarks in my short toolbar list.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/884877
You say you have a lot of duplicate bookmarks, and want to know how to organize bookmarks, but from the pictures shown, I really only see a news subscription, some sample bookmarks in the bookmarks toolbar that you don't display on the toolbars so I don't see point in deleting anything there most of it are reports from the database or from a news subscription nothing of much concern, really. I would dump the news subscription if you don't use it.
How do you want to arrange your bookmarks, but you must keep within some boundaries of what was expected of the three major folders.
Bookmarks Menu -- this is your folder categorized bookmarks, originally all bookmarks were in this folder and the bookmarks toolbar was one folder within -- that has changed.
Bookmarks Toolbar -- intended to be visible on the toolbar with main bookmarks and folders spread out horizontally to save one level of drilling down into folders, with very few bookmarks and folders visible on the toolbar but quickly accessed. You can use the bookmarks showing essentially as buttons a few primary bookmarklets. You can have folder structure there so you could actually have thousands of bookmarks there within folders.
Unsorted Bookmarks (no folders within by intent not by restriction) -- new concept to not categorize bookmarks into folders because of bookmark tagging. Delicious.com will show you what they intended where you have lots of people. I think the concept of tagging breaks down with one person. The other reason bookmarks no longer had to be put into folders was the "AwesomeBar" feature of Firefox that is a great feature it will find bookmarks whatever folder they are in -- I hope you are familiar with it. You can throw bookmark separators into any folder but they are especially useful in the unsorted bookmarks folder, especially if you sort the folder. In other words a group probably within a date range.
So how do you see yourself categorizing your bookmarks ?
I'd like to get an idea of '''how many bookmarks '''you have altogether and how big your places.sqlite file is. To find out how many bookmarks you have all together bring up the Bookmarks Library list, place a colon (":") into the search field this will do a find on all of your bookmarks. At the bottom of the library window you will see the total number of bookmarks you may have to nudge the vertical scrollbar down, and as long as no bookmarks are selected you will see an '''item count'''.
Open your profile folder Help > Troubleshooting information... then click on "Open containing folder" then looking in bookmarkbackups folder and report size of last .json file in there -- hope you can see the extension the filenames have dates.
From the library list you can see if you actually do have a lot or any duplicated by eyeballing the list sorted by the location. You don't want to delete anything yet until you know what you want to do and what folders the bookmarks actually in, as you would not want to delete a categorized bookmark for an uncategorized one.
I have 1256 bookmarks, a bookmarks backup file (.json) is 1849 KB.
I have 750 of those bookmarks have a keyword shortcut -- most of my bookmarks may not actually be bookmarks to webpages.
Install the "Show Parent Folder" extension, it would be important for manually categorizing and deleting bookmarks.
At some point you will want to install the "Sort Places" extension that allows you to sort folders recursively in a matter of seconds. Only sort when you want to sort, never automatically.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/sortplaces/
Other extensions of interest for working with bookmarks are included in
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Sorting_and_rearranging_bookmarks_-_Firefox
The columns in the bookmarks library list that I show are
:Name, Location, Parent Folder, visit date, visit count, Keyword, Description, Last Modified
The important columns for eliminating duplicates are
:Name, Location, Parent Folder, Keyword, Description
:if you have Tags then that column would also be important not to delete the bookmark
Sort on Location look for duplicates, expect you won't find as many as you thought you would, because Firefox makes it difficult to create duplicates if you use the bookmarks star. I wouldn't delete any until you really know what you want to do, if you have duplicate you would not want to delete one a primary location based on parent directory or the one you use with a keyword.
I don't really think you have much to delete in your toolbars list, they are basically examples. Would highly recommend you keep something in the bookmarks toolbar even though you are not displaying it.
The only case of having major duplicates are if you have imported bookmarks at the bottom of your bookmarks menu also named bookmarks menu or something similar. You would see that in the parent folder column -- you cannot sort on the parent folder column.

  • After Spry validation how to redirect to a "you have successfully register" page

I am helping a friend set up a webpage for her business.  You can see the website here www.themessagetext.com.  I used a Spry validation for the phone number and the checkbox.  One the validation is verified, I want the user to be redirected to a page that says that they have successfully register.  Right now it takes you to an ugly page.  It looks like an error page, but it says that you have successfully register.

Sorry I did post the wrong code for the wrong page.  Here is the code for the right page.  The more I thought about it I figured it was a design problem.  Should I post it somewhere else since this form is for Spry.

  • I have Adobe reader. I want to transfer data in files to Microsoft Word. Do you have a trial offer I can get to see if it works before I subscribe?

I am a senior citizen on a limited budget. I have hundreds of files of newspaper articles I would like th change to Microsoft Office Word 97-2003. Is there some kind of trial offer I can get for a few days to try the Adobe PDF to Microsoft Word conversion package and make sure it works before I subscribe? Thank you.
                                       Jerry Jackson  ([email protected])

"I copied them from Paper of Record using Adobe PDF"
Ok, some problems are present with that.
--| There is no such application as "Adobe PDF".
--| PDF is not Adobe's (it is an ISO Standard file format/technology, ISO 32000-1:2008).
--| If all you have is Adobe Reader (any version) then you cannot create PDF.
No version of Adobe Reader can create PDF files, manipulate PDF page content or export PDF page content.
Perhaps the online source already provide PDF files and these were download?
Both Adobe Reader XI and Acrobat XI (Standard and Pro) provide us with a "Select" tool.
IF the PDF's page content is renderable text ("digital" characters rather than an image / picture of characters which is the output of all scanners or "outlined" fonts (which is a vector graphic drawing of the character and not a renderable font) then that renderable text can be copied.
Using the Select tool one selects some rendrable text content then right clicks for the context menu.
On that menu there is the choice of "Copy".
Once copied the content can be pasted into a support application / file.
So, doing this from either Acrobat XI or Adobe Reader XI I can  (and have) done a "copy" of renderable textual content in a PDF and then "pasted" same into an MS Word file.
With that  said I must admit I am skeptical of what you have harvested being textual content that is actually renderable text (real glyphs derived from real font encoding tables associated with the source file).
Almost always old - old stuff that gets online (in webspace or network space) is the image / picture of the imprint on paper that was scanned (aka "captured"). It may or may not have been OCR'd.
If some organization had folks type in / keyboard in content to a file then, yes,  there'd be renderable text.
If what you have is displaying the same layout as the old newspapers then it is 99 44/100 ths of certainty that you have an image, a picture of the old newspaper articles / issues.
If the image / picture of text that is a PDF's content has had OCR applied press Ctrl+A while viewing the PDF.
If many "boxes" of blue appear you have OCR output.
If one big blueish box over the whole page appears you do not have OCR output present.
If you have OCR output then you have the "characters".
These can be exported. These can have copy and paste performed.
BUT no picture / image of text has "styles", "format", "layout", etc. -- it is a picture eh.
So, you get recognized characters.  It will not be 100% (an "m" might be recognized as "n~")
Once you have the OCR output characters in Word or whatever you must engage in cleanup.
Please note the MS Word is most decidely not a page layout application so any rework to get a Word file to resemble the layout of a newspaper is problematic.
Keep in mind that back in the day what got to become the printed imprint on paper for any newspaper, etc always came from a manually laid out setup. No InDesign, etc back then.
    Be well....
