Do you know of a simple way of sorting and deleting duplicate photos on  aperture

Hi , Do you know of a simple way of sorting and then deleting duplicate photos on Apeture.
Thanks Phil

There is no simple way. The best strategy really is to take care not to import duplicates.
What is your Aperture 3 version?
What kind of duplicates are you asking about?
If you imported exactly the same file multiple times, sorting your images in the Finder by filename or creation date will display them side by side.
If you have diferently sized versions of the same image, edited versions, or versions converted to a different format, then sorting by creation date will not help; you might try to sort by capture date, but that may fail, if there were different imezone settings when you imported the images.
You could also sort be filename, if you did not rename the images on import.
If you renamed your versions, adjusted the date, modified the file properties by writing to the original files, try to sort by other tages - faces, location, keywords.
There are some helper applications to scan your Aperture library and tag duplicates: (I have not really tested any of them)
Duplicate Annihilator (Mac) - Download  good to detect accidentally imported thumbnails
http://photosweeper.en.softonic.com/mac  : This app can actually detect edited duplicates based on statistic measures and histogram similarity.

  • I have 8000  photos in my iPhoto library.  Many are duplicated in the "Pictures" folder in the Finder.  Is there an easy way to detect and delete duplicates in the "Pictures" folder?

Anyone know how to detect and delete duplicate photo files that exist in the Pictures folder in the Finder that are also in the iPhoto library?

There's no way to compare the photos in the library with those outside the library.  However, as long as you're running a "managed" library
You can import batches of the photos, i.e by folder, into the library.  If the photo is already in the library you will be given this notice:
Check that checkbox and clik on the Don't Import button.  When that folder is finished importing (or not) delete it and go to the next.
If you need to check for duplicates in the library you can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.

There really is no easier way than to use Duplicate Annihilator. It costs about $8.00 but will save you lots of time.

  • Is there a way to automatically detect and delete duplicate photos in a library

I just imported a load of photos into my main iPhoto '11 Library from several older MAC's Photo Libraries. Despite repeatedly using the "Don't Import Duplicate Photos" dialogue box, I have many duplicate photos. Is there a way to automatically detect and delete Duplicate Photos?
I also have iPhoto Library Manager installed on my MAC, but cannot seem to locate on it anything that would do this.
I have over 4,000 photos, so would really appreciate some help here! Thanks in advance...

And NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - doing so des not work and creates massive duplication
if you still have all of the original iPhoto libraries I recommend you drag the bad one you created to the desktop (delete it later when everythin has successfully been completed) and start over usin iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge the libraries

  • I have a lot of duplicate songs on my iPhone 4--Is there an easy way to find and delete duplicates?

Is there an easy way to find and delete duplicate songs on an IPhone 4?

A belated hello.  On the topic of duplicate songs / tracks showing up in, say, your iPhone Music app but not in your iTunes Library, with these versions installed ....
    iTunes 10.5
iPhone 4 running on iOS 5
.... I discovered this too.  This is what I did:
    1. purchased full album from the iTunes Store
(once download completed, album magically showed up in iPhone Music app, as expected, without having to sync)
    2. I then went to my iTunes Music view and edited the album year (Multiple Item Information)
    3. Synced
    4. All album tracks showed up in duplicate in iPhone Music app (but not in iTunes view)
    Solution:
    1. in iTunes, I changed back the album year to the one iTunes Store originally downloaded
    2. Re-synced
    3. Now all album tracks show up but no longer in duplicate in iPhone Music app
Lesson learned: When purchasing music from iTunes Store, leave metadata untouched.

  • Just starting to use aperture. is there a way to find and delete duplicate pix?

I'm working on a huge project and there are duplicates here and there. Is there a way to delete all duplicates from projects--or at least an easier way to do it then 1 by 1?

Aperture has no built-in tools to detect duplicates. There are some nice tools to detect duplicates in iPhoto libraries, so if you treat your Aperture library as an iPhoto library, you might give these applications a try:  see the post by Old Toad:
Re: what is the best way to delete duplicate photos in iPhoto?

  • Simple way to select and remove duplicate images.

As I work diligently to have Aperture manage all of my image files I have come top the realization that I have a number of duplicate image files scattered over a number of resources.
Is there a simple way to have Aperture identify the duplicates and more importantly to keep from importing duplicate images into the management library?
    Thanks!

I have not heard of an automated way to accomplish this. I beleive G has given you the standard method above. Aperture does not have a programed way to do this, and there is no way to prevent importing duplicates except by being careful not to do it in the first place.
However, if you know you imported some duplicates and know approximately when you did it, you could use a Smart Album to show you the images. Click on the blue Library icon and choose menu option File>New Smart>Album. In the Smart Album Smart Settings HUD, click on the checkbox that says, "Import Session is one or more of the following," then check on one or more of the import sessions listed. Be sure to also check the checkbox "Ignore stack groupings." Once you find the duplicate import, you can delete the images from your Aperture Library.
BTW, I use a referenced file system, so if I want to place images into an external folder that has already been imported into Aperture, I use Finder to apply a color label. The color label shows up in Aperture's import dialog and I can then select only the images with the color label applied. I then have to remember to remove the color label in Finder.

  • I'm struggling to find a way to find and delete duplicate images

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to a newer iMac and Aperture 2 to handle my growing library of photos. Since I started college two years ago, I've taken close to 20,000 images. I stored and organized those as I always had with my others in iPhoto. Now when I imported my iPhoto library (~30,000 images) into Aperture, I made sure to click the "do not import duplicates" box. However, as I scrolled through the library, just checking, I came across what has to be several hundred duplicate images that were created whenever I rotated my photos in iPhoto.
Strange thing is, it didn't happen with my new images. These are all old jpeg images.
I'm not sure (and I doubt) if it has anything to do with the new photos being in RAW format, but regardless, it's taking up a lot of space.
Is there a way to search for and delete these duplicates? I noticed it made a stack for each image with the original and the rotated version, if that means anything.
Just something to enter in the search box or whatever to bring them all up and delete them would be great, because I've been trying forever and asking around and haven't found a solution.
One other small question: If I've backed up my Aperture library using Time Machine, does it make any sense to make a Vault on another (or the same) drive?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Chris

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • Is there an easy way to detect and delete duplicate home videos?

For some reason when I upload videos from my video camera I end up with two versions on my harddrive. A smaller version and a lager one. I have also had some other issues with iPhoto in the past that caused me to have to make a copy of a video before I could play it. All that to say, now I am out of memory and need to clean up this mess. I have hundreds of videos to go through and am wondering if there is an easier way to do this besides just going through and checking each pair to trash the smaller/duplicate version.

Seems to me that the videos would import at the same time, so if you have all the vids in the same folder viewed in list view, you could sort by date. All the vids hould list with the large version right above (or below) the small version. simply select every other video, noting the file size as you go, and delete.

  • Is there a way to search for and delete duplicate photos in iPhoto.

In the course of copying events and photos from one computer to another I've ended up with multiple copies of thousands of pictures. I've organized them both by name and by date and been deleting the duplicates manually, but there are just so many it would take a thousand years. thanks

Upgrading to firefox 5 and updating my plug-ins helped a bit. Frog is less 'sticky' now, but it's not solved the problem. Java needs to be up to speed or the frog goes into stasis....
