Do you lose quality doing this?

I think i asked this before, but i can't remember what the answer was.
If you open a JPEG, modify it and then save it as a TIFF, do you lose quality?
Thanks.

No. Tiff is not lossy, so you will not lose quality. In a JPEG the quality loss comes when the compression is applied when you save and close the file.

  • Rotoscoping...can you get work doing this?

I understand most people use a green screen when they need to composite video, but I was wondering if their is a work market for people who do this pretty well

Yes, absolutely. In fact, demand for roto artists is increasing as some companies nowadays are opting to roto certain shots that would traditionally be shot green screen.
I'd advise checking out VFXRecruit.com, Creative COW and making enquiries with effects houses.
But if you are considering doing this professionally, you may want to consider a software package with more features such as Shake, Nuke or Silhouette Roto.

  • Converting AVI DV to QuickTime DV. Do you lose quality?

I posted this in the FCE forum but wonder if any DV gurus in here might have a definite answer.
I have a some dv streams in avi format that have been captured using Sony Vegas from DV tapes. The files suffixed .avi will not open in Quicktime, but I found MPEG streamclip and VLC could read them, and they report that the DV codec is DVSD. I have converted them in MPEG streamclip using both the Export to Quicktime and Export to DV. The result codec for the DV is DVSL. With the Export to Quicktime, I have made a .mov Apple DV (PAL)file at 100% quality, the result codec is DVCP. Both Dv and .mov video looks the same the same and works fine in FCE. With the Export to DV command it is a straightfoward conversion and also works fine, but FCE wants to render the audio from the DV clip when placed in a sequence. In MPEG streamclip if I compare a frame of the original AVI, the DV convert and the .MOV convert it looks basically identical.
The BIG question is does anyone know if am losing quality doing it this way and what the DVSD that codec Vegas is using against the Mac's DVSL and DVCP codecs mean?
Is it better to convert to .mov apple dv files so FCE doesn't need to render audio, or use the convert to DV and render the audio in FCE? I realise that it would be simpler to capture straight into FCE, but I'd like to know if converting in MPEG streamclip is fine or if it should be avoided. I am trying this because the person shooting the footage can capture and then hand the media to me for editing. Vegas is supposed to be QuickTime compatible so I don't quite understand why the files don't open in QT on the mac.
Also, is it the case the a Firewire captured DV stream has no compression at all and these codecs only come into play when being played on a computer and for rendering, so if MPEG streamclip copies the DV stream intact and just uses apples codecs for playback, then there should be no loss of quality?

Some people have reported success with DivX avi and this beta version of DivX fusion with Tiger/QT7. If it doesn't work for you then you may have to work with ffmpeg:

  • How would you go about doing this?  (some broken links)

    Okaaaayy,
Let's say every link in your document has broken and you now have to go back into it and relink everything before print time tomorrow...
Sure, no problem, but why did it happen.
I know that if you rename a file or folder or move a linked image file out of it's original location, the link in Indesign gets broken, but what about surrounding/encompassing folders? Seems kinda weird.. but to provide an example I included a picture of how I have the uber-structure set up.
What I actually did was rename (I think I did.) the "UBER"-folder's name
    "Prepress guide pages/ image links"
What's inside of that folder is another folder for each page in the document with another separate folder for 'linked images'.
MUSTA BEEN A BAD MOVE TO NENAME 'PREPRESS GUIDE IMAGE LINKS' BECAUSE ALL LINKS ARE BUSTED NOW.
    frikkin' indesign.
Honestly, I never changed names or moved anything else, in fact..
I spent most of my time organizing what you see on the picture here..
    minus the details... lol
    http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a349/coffeyville1975/Picture4-4.png

You changed the name of a folder containing your links. InDesign is
still looking for the old folder name and won't go any further until it
    finds it.
You really have a bit to learn about proper workflow but you'll get
there. These types of mistakes are the kind that you usually only make
    once and learn from.
One more piece of advice...lose the slashes in file names. They're not
cross platform and you won't always be working in a vacuum.

  • ERM SP13: What do you get by doing this?

    Hi all,
We do have SP13 since two weks ago now and we have found the following behaviour in ERM:
If you create a new role in SP13 and once created you search for it, select it (by flagging the checkbox) and click on modify a new screen with the methodoly appears but without showing any data for the role selected. Furthermore, an error message is shown saysn "Action Failed".
If you do the following (search, select it and click on modify) but for a role defined in a previous SP (SP12 in our case), the information is properly shown on screen for the role selected.
I just wanted to share with you this behaviour and see if anyone is "suffering" the same.
Many thanks in advance. Kind regards,
      Imanol

    Imanol,
Please make sure that you have taken care of all the post-installation steps for the upgrade. Most importantly, upload the initial data xml files for SP13.

  • Exporting sequence from Final Cut Pro 7, some clips are pixellated and bad quality, does this have anything to do with the fact that I changed those clips speed?

    Hello,
Bit of a beginner using Final Cut Pro 7
Am currently trying to export a sequence using quicktime conversion.  Sequence has various filters and effects over it and when I export it some of the clips are pixellated and appear to have not exported correctly.  From what I can gather the affected clips have either been slowed down or made faster.  I am wondering whether this is the reason they have not exported correctly
    Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers

    More information needed.
    Codec of material?
    Sequence settings? (codec)
fwiw - do not use quicktime conversion. Use Export Quicktime with Current Settings enabled then do any format conversions in Compressor.

  • Mac Mini as a "Media Center"...Anyone doing this?

I am considering purchasing a single core mini to use as a media center. If you are currently doing this, how is it workingout for you?
How is the video quality on your television while viewing pics from iPhoto?
How is the streaming of music from iTunes?
How about video? Is your home network wired or wireless?
    Thanks in advance.

I decided to take the Mini plunge to create a media center. I'm still assembling pieces, but so far it's great.
You'll want some kind of a high def monitor for the Mini, or external control via Apple Remote Desktop or VNC, because the Mini's desktop on a standard TV is just way unuseable.
iPhoto slideshows and MPEG4 videos look wonderful, and that's on my 10+ year old Sony 32" tube TV. I have a new High Def TV coming tomorrow and can't wait to see how great things look.
iTunes shared music plays just fine through the Mini. And using FrontRow to access the music collection on my main Mac enables me to see the full title and artist on the TV screen.
I hooked up a FireWire drive to handle video storage this evening, and I'm currently noticing a constant fan noise from the mini; I'll be investigating why that should be...when the I was using the Mini without the FireWire drive, the Mini's fan was completely silent.
FrontRow is a nice application; my only complaint is that when playing MPEG4 files the fast-forward, fast-reverse features are way too slow.
FrontRow remembers your place when playing a video file and gives you the option of starting from the top or resuming play the next time you access the file. However, when I moved files to external storage the previous stopping points were lost. Trying to fast forward 2.25 hours into a 3 hour video was way too slow. I ended up copying the move I wanted to watch, opening the copy in QuickTime, finding the point I wanted to watch from, deleting from the beginning to the desired point, and saving the file...THEN playing it with FrontRow.

  • Why does this constantly freeze up when I am in the middle of a game?

I was in the middle of playing a yahtzee game and all of a sudden the game froze up? WHY? I realize this is a free service, but come on guys get it together! Or I'll find a different internet provider.

There are a variety of reasons this may happen. Here are the first things you might try to correct that problem:
    1. Quit the app. Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your iPhone. Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button continuously until the Apple logo appears. Then release the button and let the device restart. You will not lose data doing this. It's like a computer reboot.
    2. If that didn't work quite the app again and then delete the app. I'm assuming that the problematic app is not one of the default apps that came on the iPhone. To delete an app tap and hold on the app until it begins to juggle and displays an X. Tap on the X and confirm that you want to delete the app. Then download the app again from the app store. Be sure you back up your data first. You will not be charged to download the app again so long as you are using the same Apple ID that you used to download it originally.
    3. If those attempts still failed contact the developer of the app to determine if they are aware of the problem and whether they have a fix planned for it.

  • After a search page renders, the NEW FF does NOT open up a choice in a new window and you lose the search page. WHY? I do not like this!

every internet browser keeps the main page that renders when you do a search. you can click on any of the options and a new window opens. the latest version of FF i downloaded today has completely removed that feature. when you click on a search choice, it opens up in the same window as the search page and you loose all your search options. that is not good..
i may have to go to Chrome now unless you can fix this

  • "Compress" option in Finder .. Do you lose any quality?

Hello. I'm just wondering about the "Compress" option when you right-click anything in the "Finder".. I know that it makes a (.zip) file of whatever you select..
Does this compression cause any reduction in quality? I have a TON of (.wav) and (.mp3) libraries that I would like to compress for storage purposes, but it is extremely important that there will be no loss in sound quality or file integrity..
    Thoughts?

    • Lacie 1TB 5400rpm external thunderbolt drive

No. You only lose quality when using an audio compression method; the Finder uses a data compression one, which preserves everything.
General data compression methods need to be lossless. Unlike audio-specific ones, the program performing the compression has no way of knowing what can be safely discarded.

  • Best way to print an image multiple times on same sheet and not lose quality when doing so

    Hello,
I have the full subscription to Adobe Creative Suite, but am unfamiliar with almost all of the programs. I have used Photoshop a bit, but not too much.
I have this project I do several times a year, and am sure there is a better way to do it.
I am sent a colourful excel spreadsheet - a schedule. I print a bunch of copies full size, then need to print 8 copies on a single 8.5x11 piece of paper.
I've tried several methods - but want to know what the best way to retain the best quality would be.
The best I've done (and I'm not totally happy with) is to copy the image into Photoshop, save as a PDF, create 7 more copies then merge as a single PDF and print.
I do find that the quality does suffer a bit.
Can anyone suggest a better way?
    Thanks in advance.
    Amber

With all the apps at your disposal, that is a long way around. Granted it is hard to not loose quality/data when scaling. But it makes sense to create the document to your liking, then create a new document that is 8.5" x 11" and place the original into it. Then using guides or alignment tools, duplicate that image.
This allows you to have full control over the location of each image, and extra data needed like captions, names, etc. and how that data is formated.
Luckily you have multiple programs that can accomplish this. Some are easier than others, some are more robust than others, etc. In the end it is what you are familar with and how much time you can spend on learning while getting the job done.
Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign are all your go to programs from creating anything for print and they can be used for other media as well. But that is their strong suite, print.
All three apps have their own dedicated forum on this site, so go ahead and mark them as your favorites as your questions for each need to be in their respective place.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

As your rotate the image, you will begin to see black edges. So, as Tom implies, the image must be scaled up to hide those voids. If you shot 4k ad are editing in a HD timeline, no problem, lots of room to spare. If you shot 1080 and are editing in a 1080 timeline, you will run into issues at a certain point. However, if your 1080 project is going to be transcoded to 720 or ye olde DVD you won't notice any deterioration at all.

  • My clips have a yellow line on the timeline sequence. Does this affect my video quality output if I don't render?

I use Adobe CS 6 to edit and I use Sony NX 3 to record. Every time I import my clips. It has a yellow line on the timeline sequence, even when I make new clip from the sequence.. My question is, does this affect my video quality output if i did not render the yellow line out? Please someone help me

Please see this link for more info about red and yellow bars - http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2011/02/red-yellow-and-green-render-bars.html
If you shoot 1080p, you will likely have better results going to DVD than if you start with 1080i. It's hard enough downscaling with decent quality, then if you add in interlacing issues...
When exporting from Premiere to create a DVD, choose "MPEG-2 DVD" as the format, and then choose a preset such as "NTSC Widescreen Progressive".
There is a checkbox at bottom of export window for "Max Render Quality"  - use that for best downscaling results.
Use 2-Pass VBR encoding. Use a bitrate calculator to determine best bitrate for length of movie, or quick option is 560/minutes = bitrate. But don't exceed 8.0 on shorter movies. I typically round down a little for safety margin, such as 560/120 = 4.6, encode at 4.5 and no worries.
The export will result in TWO files, .m2v video and .wav audio, import both into Encore for authoring. Encore will convert the .wav to Dolby AC3, reducing file size. Video should NOT get transcoded. And as others said, don't expect HD quality when viewing a DVD...definitely not HD video any longer. But do be sure to use an upscaling player, this makes all the difference. If you run a yellow composite cable from DVD to TV, it will look horrible. Use HDMI with upscaling DVD/Blu-ray player for improved result.
    Good luck

The main settings that are changed in these cases can be found in this article:

To ensure you don't lose any data you don't want taken off, ensure that each Summary, Apps, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, iTunes U, Books, & Photos have the settings you would prefer on the computer.
If anything gets changed on any of those pages, you will be prompted with that message.  If they look fine, especially after adding some media like songs or videos, then you can apply the changes without fear.
