Do you need 60GB of free space?

Sorry if this has already been asked.
If I buy a 60GB iPOD, do I need 60GB of free space on my computer to be able to fill up my iPOD? If I only have 40GB free on my computer, tben will I only be able to put 40GB of music and video on my iPOD?

you don't have to keep stuff on your computer's HDD after downloading to the iPod. hence, one of the benefits of having more space on your pod.
A few words of caution if you choose to do this. BACK UP YOUR LIBRARY TO SOME SORT OF EXTERNAL MEDIA! Backup to CD, DVD, external hard drive, tape... something. Do NOT rely on your iPod as your single repository for your music.
At some point, your iPod may need to be restored, and if it is the only place you have your music, you will lose it.

I'm trying to manually sync my music to my iPhone but it needs so much free space

I used to be synced to a different iTunes on a different computer. Now that I have my own laptop with my on music library I'm trying to sync it to my phone. I have to do it manually because I don't have enough space on my phone to sync my entire music library. But every time I try to sync it, it will tell me that it's unable to sync because it needs "at least 3.something more GB of space in order to sync" and every time I unselect an artist it will say it needs more space until I have barely any of my music selected. Why does it need so much free space? Like it requires approx 5GB of free space in order to sync my music and I don't understand why. I've never had this issue before. I even imported all of my pictures to my laptop so I could delete them to make room for my music. Please help me.

How do you display the capacity/free space for the hard drive......

How do you display the capacity/free space for the hard drive on the desktop, under the hard drive icon.... I have seen this done, but I am not seeing any options to do so.... thanks.

I need to erase free space on my hard drive. But when I am in disk utility the format and name are pale as is the erase free space button so I cannot erase free space.

My start up disk is full. I have been through my computer and erased a lot of music and video to free some space. I then went to disk utility to erase free space and find that the erase free space button is pale and therefore won't work. Nor can I select or deselect MacOS extended journaled.
Advice please?!

Recovering Disk Space
If you have less than 20% disk space then it is time to roll up your sleeves and search for what you can delete and what you can offload to another disk.
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files or purchase a lager disk or SSD (see below). You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again. More headroom is better. If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
- Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
Empty the Trash.
- Start iPhoto.
Empty its trash.
Restart.
- Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart the computer.
As soon as you hear the chime press and hold the right shift key.
Be patient. Hold it down until you see the Apple icon.
Empty the trash.
Restart in normal mode.
- Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
    Hold the option key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
    Select "Library" from the drop down menu.
    Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes
    Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
- Empty the Trash.
- Restart.
- Re-index your system disk (Macintosh HD):

Time Machine Snapshots:
If your disk is 80% full that is normal. Time Machine uses up to 80% of the disk space for local snapshots. To get rid of these snapshots simply plug in your Time Machine backup drive and run a backup. Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions. You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files. Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk. Use ODS again to find them. As noted above this will be at least your second hard drive. Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s). Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

Need to format "free space" of external hard drive for Time Machine

I just recently purchased a MacBook Air and want to set up Time Machine with my external hard drive. I'm migrating from Windows 7 so before purchasing my new Mac, I transferred about 100 GB of data from my PC to my external hard drive that I wanted to keep. The external hard drive has a partition of 100 GB (91 GB used) and 365 GB of "free space". I would like to know how to format that free space so that I can use it with Time Machine but at the same time not lose any of my data on the first partition. I've looked around in the Disk Utility but it doesn't give any options to format the free space.

You should be able to repartition it, but that requires that the HD was formatted with Mac OS X Extended and journaling turned on. All I can suggest is you get another HD or move the 100 GB of stuff to the MBA, erase, reformat, and partition into two pieces, copy the 100 GB stuff back to the HD, and then it's set for TM.

Keep your root clean...you need 45 meg free!

Just was on the Project Manager of Fremantle Applications Framework blog and he states that the next update will require at least 45 meg free on rootfs...start cleaning....if you don't know what rootfs is or how to check availability install conky.

This one gives you around 20Mb. If you did NSU update and reinstalled all apps you do not need to do this.
If you installed a python application (for example FM Radio, Quicknote, Witter, Hermes,gPodder, MAstory) before python was optified, you need to reinstall python.
there is a 'geek' way to do it or the easy way.
Easy way... Make sure you have WiFi Access for your N900 on a network that has been set up.
1) Do a backup...include applications
2) Do the NSU update
3) Immediately after update do a restore of your backup.
4) system will ask you to reinstall all apps.

Any way to download IOS7 without needing 3.7GB free space?

I'm currently using an iPhone 4 that has just 1.1GB free space. I want to download IOS7, but I can't as it says it requires 3.7GB free space.
I previously tried doing it when I plugged into iTunes, and I clicked update on the computer. However this didn't wory and sent me into recovery mode, meaning I nearly lost all my data. What did I do wrong? Was it because of my lack of space?
How much room does IOS7 actually take up once downloaded?
Is there any way to download IOS7 without having to delete all my stuff?

The reference is to disk space not memory. Apparently your hard drive is too full. You either need to delete some data to make more free space or put in a larger hard drive or get an external drive and move some files from the internal drive to the external drive to free up space.
Virtual memory is under the control of the OS and expands or contracts as needed. There's no need for the user to modify the amount of VM.

Need help with the "Erase Free Space" disk utility

When I use Disk Utilities to Erase Free Space (I use the single zero mode) I get a message telling me,
"Your Startup Disk is almost Full,
you need to make more space available
on your startup disk by deleting files."
This occurs about 90% of the way through the process (based on where the blue bar is at the time) during the "Creating Temporary File" portion of the process. I know from past experience that I will remain in this portion of the process forever unless I press the "Skip" button to complete the process.
My questions,
1. What is the startup disk and why is it full?
2. What should I do about the Your Startup Disk is Almost Full warning?
3. Is my computer actually talking about "regular" disk space (I currently have about 9GB of 80GB free but have seen this warning with 30GB available as well).
4. When I press "Skip" and the blue bar continues to complete the process, have I actually erased free space?

The Disk Utility does the erase by creating large temporary files, writing to them, then deleting them. While doing this, OSX may notice the lack of free space on the disk. This is normal, but could cause problems if you are also running some applications that want some disk space. If you let if finish, it should delete the temporary files and free the disk space.
I prefer to run the Disk Utility from the Tiger install disk when doing a Verify, Repair, or Erase Free Space on my boot disk, so I know I won't be interfering with anything running.

I try and no error appears, yet when I leave the partitions tab it says I've got unsaved changes.
I've gone into recovery mode and run a repair disk, and to resize it while still inside recovery mode. Nothing seems to help.

Hallo. I need to replace all schemas on integration server using those on production server. I want to know how much free space will be left on /data at integration server after this kind of refresh. Both databases are Oracle 9 so I will use exp/imp. Here is how I do it. Could you check if I think good? On target server there is 72 GB free space on /data.

How does repeated snapshot import impact tablespace free space?

Our client is doing DEC-2014 reconciliation in FCM. Every time he changes profile mappings he has to do snapshot import again. So far he did at least ten times snapshot import for DEC-2014 period. In our FCM database Tablespace FCM_TX_TS_DATA free space is reduced 7 GB for this period already by querrying dba_free_space table.
By my understanding during the repeated snapshot import for the same period, the previous load data is deleted and the current load data is inserted. After data delete the table space will not be set free, and high water mark will not be reset.
During snapshot import will the deleted blocks from the previous load be reclaimed when new load data is inserted in the table? If not, what is the best way to reclaim the free space in FCM_TX_TS_DATA tablespace?

Deleting Files in MacBookPro - Yosemite sending "FREE SPACE" to "Other"

I have the weirdest problem.
I'm running a Macbook Pro Late 2013 with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1.
The MAC came with a 500GB SSD Drive.
I have about 60GB of free space on my Mac. I need to restore a large file that is about 60GB.
So I thought to myself, "I'll just delete files I don't need".
I went ahead and deleted a parallels VM that was about 60GB in size. But I was shocked when I checked "About this Mac": no free space had been added!
I went ahead and did all the usual stuff. Empty trash, restart the MAC, repair permissions using "Disk Utility", restart the mac again, - but no matter what I did, I could not get the 60GB of free space from the file I had just deleted.
I downloaded OmniDisk Sweeper and Disk Doctor, but none of these applications where able to either get my 60GB back, or at least point me to where the 60GB has gone.
So I decided to disable my time machine. This usually gets rid of the backup cache. "About this Mac" showed that I would get about 50GB free space by doing this. After doing this, I was shocked to see that my free space had only changed negligibly - from 60GB to 64GB. Deleting 50GB of backups only added 4GB to my free space.
However during all of this, I noticed my "Other" data in "About this Mac" had grown considerably from about 90GB to about 206GB. It seems to me that all that space I have free'd up has somehow gone into the "Other" category instead of going to the "Free Space" category.
Please note my trash can is completely empty, and I have repaired permissions using Disk Utility at least twice with no effect.
I need to get my free space back so I can restore my virtual machine and get back to work.
Please help!!!

How much space does it say is available when you click on the HDD icon on your desktop COMMAND + I?
Hoe does this compare with OmniDiskSweeper?
You might have to reindex Spotlight if you are seeing inconsistent amounts.
