Do you need an 802.11n compatible computer to take advantage of the new AX?

I was going to buy an AX to increase my wireless range, but wasn't sure if I needed an 802.11n compatible computer to take advantage of the new features. I have an old G5 tower and G4 powerbook. Thanks.

You need 802.11 N hardware to be able to receive those kinds of speeds, as well as the broadband service. I do not think the G5s support wireless N...

I have an iMac5, 1, with a dual core of 2 X 512 MB RAM. Can I add memory to my original computer in order to take advantage of the recent OSX Mavericks download?

    You can:
    Maximum Memory
3.0 GB (4.0 GB can be installed, only 3.0 GB will be addressed)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
You will need to replace the modules you now have with one 2 and one 1 GB module or two 2 GB modules.
You cannot install anything higher than 10.75 Lion as your model is not able to run anything higher.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Be sure to check whether any of your applications will have to be upgraded or replaced..

  • Is my Macbook pro 802.11n compatible?

    Hello
So a few months ago I saw an article on a tech blog (can't remember which one) saying that some macbook pros were 802.11n capable with the use of the enabler. This site also had a link to a page that told you by serial numbers which MBP's were ok for N and which were not. I went there, plugged in my serial and it came back and said mine WAS N capable.
To make a long story short, I started drooling for the airport extreme as it allowed you to hook the hard drive. This would allow me to put all my old PC files on an external and go "Office Space" on my pc.
Got the extreme and a hard drive, hooked it up no problem, works beautifully. Downloaded the enabler (was not aware it came with my extreme software) and went to install it and I got the message "Your computer does not meet the hardware requirements for this update."
Does anyone know how I can verify if my MBP is in fact N capable? I'm hoping this is an error of some sort, although If I must I will get the N capable airport card installed. I just want to exhaust any simple solutions before that.
I bought her in April 2006 and she's a 1.83 Intel core Duo.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello
Yea. I just got off the phone with tech and mine is not n capable. Quite a bummer. I did some research and it seems some have been able to replace the g card with an n card in core duos without much problem.
    Heres a link...
    http://www.hardmac.com/articles/71/page1/
    and another...
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/macbookprowireless_N_upgrade/macbookpro_N_cardinstall.html
I must say that if this is in fact possible, then apple should offer this as an upgrade. I paid over 3K Canadian for my MBP and I absolutely love the thing and will never go back to pc's. This is the first time I have been disappointed by apple in any way, and I don't see the business sense of saying that early adapters of the intel chipset are screwed unless you buy an updated computer.
I understand that a new wireless protocol is no small change but if the info in the links are right then why not provide the service through apple under warranty. I have never been much of a DIY'er when it comes to computers and putting the card in a laptop scares the crap out of me. BUT if it is my only option then I would do it, if only to extend the life of my laptop to take advantage of the obviously superior N protocol.
Using the external hard drive over the network in G only seems to be lacking. It takes about 10 - 15 seconds for a itunes song to start over the network and about the same to go to the next song. Kind of the whole point of getting the AEBS, as I have a 45 GB itunes library which I don't want on my 80 gb MBP hard drive for obvious reasons.
    What do you guys think?

how do you download Lightroom if you need to reinstall software on computer???

    Answered in your other thread.

  • Need to get a mibile computer and i am considering the macbook pro 15". Is that a good idea?

Need to get a mibile computer and i am considering the macbook pro 15". Is that a good idea?

The 15" is the ideal size, the 17" is a bit larger and more comfortable.
The 13" is a bit cramped, the 11" forget it.
The 11 and 13" have the poor Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics (solely) which are not good at 3D gaming/video and tend to overheat as the CPU is also doing the graphics.
The 2.0 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro has a slightly better video card that does average on most current 3D games.
The 2.2Ghz MacBook Pro (and higher) does excellently on 3D games with the powerful 1GB radeon 6750M and "future proofs" your computer investment for 3, 5, 7 years or longer.
It all depends upon your portability and use needs.
If your not a 3D gamer and can afford to replace your machine in shorter time periods and all you need is a basic laptop, then one of the smaller thinner machines will do. In fact even a Windows PC laptop can do. There really isn't any advantage of going for a Mac laptop at the lower end excpet for status symbol appeal. Your going to be paying $1500 for a laptop that a $800 PC will do just as well.
However if your needing more of a portable workhorse machine the 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro or better is ideal, it can run jsut about all the operating systems out there well, bootcamp into Windows and everythng with it's strong hardware and decent sized screen.
Also the 15" and up have the optional ANTI-GLARE screens which is great for classes and at work where you can't control the enviroment to reduce reflections.
If your on the go a lot, you can get a iPad in addition to the 15" MacBook Pro, if you need a larger screen you can buy that and use the MBP as a desktop machine sort of.
The smaller Mac machines don't drive a larger monitor very well, really you need a dedicated graphics card.

  • I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos

I have a G5 mac using ver 10.4.11 and a newer mac using ver 10.8.4 these are networked. using the new mac i looked up my my photo on the old mac. It then said you need to upgrade your library which it did. Now the old mac can not open the photos and say that I need to upgrade my I photo to a newer version. The old mac has no more support from apple in software update so I am not sure where I should go from here. can I use new soft ware with the old mac

The other part of the upgrade message was a warning that once you upgraded you would no longer be able to open the library with the old version which is exaclty what you did and what happened when you choose to continue
The iphoto library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library. Cancel or upgrade.
So now your choices are to not use iPhoto with the previous version using it onky with the newer version, restore your backup from before you did this upgrade or purchase iPhoto Library Manager and use it to rebuild the library using the older version of iPhoto (instructions are on their web site) thereby downgrading it (without projects)

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • How do I get the sync of my 3GS on my computer to transfer everything (files, apps, etc.) to my new iphone4?  And then how do I move the sync to a newer computer so I can sync the new phone with the new computer?

How do I get the sync of my 3GS on my computer to transfer everything (files, apps, etc.) to my new iphone4?  And then how do I move the sync to a newer computer so I can sync the new phone with the new computer?
My 3GS is dying and it's synced to an older computer.  I have tons of datafiles as well as apps, music, text messages, etc. that I need to get moved to the new iphone4 I'm getting.  Then I need to move the sync to a newer computer so that I can sync the new phone and new computer.
I understand how to get my apps to transfer to a new pc.  That's not the issue.  It's getting ALL the data from the 3GS to the 4 and then to a new computer.
    Thanks.

Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone).  Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer.  How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up?

  • In order to take advantage of the iPhone trade in, do I need to have met my upgrade eldigbility date, or do I just need to re-sign up for a new 2 year plan with the new iPhone 6?

In order to take advantage of the iPhone trade in, do I need to have met my upgrade eldigbility date, or do I just need to re-sign up for a new 2 year plan with the new iPhone 6?

thanks, a HUGE suggestion for you:  Please add that to the restrictions of the trade-in details online, it mentions that nowhere and is VERY deceptive.  Since at least 90% of 5c and 5s users are under a 2 year contract and both phones have been out just a year, there will be a majority of bitter customers who fell for the ad and will be taking advantage of the buy out options the other carriers are offering.

It depends on what iPhone you have.
If it's an iPhone 4S or earlier, click here.
If it's an iPhone 5, you need to buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, and that requires an Intel Mac with at least 1GB RAM.

  • Can I use my dad's computer and library to sync the new ringtone to my phone or no?

I am on vacation and am trying to download a different ringtone to my iPhone but since my home computer is a desktop and at home I am on my dad's computer and want to know if it is possible to sync a ringtone to my iPhone through my dad's computer.  When I open up iTunes it is his library and I know there is no way to access my library but i downloaded the ringtone to his library and don't know what will happen if I try to sync.  I don't want to because I don't know if it will put his information and music and apps on my phone and put all of my iPhone stuff on his computer.  Essentially, can I use my dad's computer and library to sync the new ringtone to my phone or no? If so then how?

If you sync with his it will erase everything you put on your iPhone from your desktop computer and replace it with everything from your dad's computer.
I'd recommend waiting until you get home.
