Do you need Camera Raw to procees Raw images in LR?

Do you have to down load and install Camera Raw to process your Raw images if you are using Light Room?

Nope...
Although it CAN be useful to have Photoshop CS3, Bridge and Camera Raw 4.x (whatever the current matching version to Lightroom) if you wish to pass raw files back and forth for the purposes of workflow.

  • Camera Raw images from my Canon 6d won't open in PS CS5. Can anyone help?

I just purchased a Canon 6d and the raw files don't show up as thumbnails and they don't open up. I've tried updating my Camera Raw in Bridge. It looks like the 7.1 update for Camera Raw isn't supported by PS CS5. What can I do?
    Carolyn.V

Camera Raw version 7.x only works with CS6.
You need Camera Raw 7.3 (CS6) or DNG Converter 7.3 or Lightroom 4.3 to open your 6D raw files, because it did not exist before these versions. Camera Raw updates are not usually provided for old versions of Adobe software.
Propriety raw format support can only be added after a new camera's release, unless manufacturers broadly adopt the DNG format as an alternative. Fortunately, DNG Converter is free, and you can use this to create DNG files from your Canon's raw files, to be opened in any version of CS/Lr.

How do you install Camera Raw 8.3 to CS5 photoshop so I can open files? Thanks

CS5 does not support ACR 8.5, it only goes as far as 6.7.
You will need to convert your raw files to DNG format with the free converter. http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html

  • I need Camera Raw.8bi (7.2 file)

    Dear reader,
Because of I have serious problem with Photoshop CS6 Camera Raw 7.4, I need to downgrade Camera raw 7.4 to 7.2 or 7.1
So if you have Camera Raw.8bi file (64 bit) could you give me a link to download?
    Thanks in advance.

The artifacts are most easily visible when the PV2010 Fill slider is set at +100.  They occur in LR 4.4, LR 5 RC, ACR 7.4 and ACR 8.1 RC, but not in ACR 7.3 or before, nor in PV2012, so it is a recent change to the old PV processing that is causing them.
    Here is a sample raw:

Here is a screenshot of the artficacts using ACR 8.1RC that show up by merely maxing out the Fill slider and leaving everything else at Adobe factory defaults:

  • Did you find camera raw 7.2 more responsive?

    hi
did you find camera raw 7.2 more responsive ?
i'm talking about sliders and lag
    i run it under w7 32bit photoshop cs6 normal update to 13.0.1
    thanks

For me it's a little faster than 7.1 to initially show the dialog on an open (by a small fraction of a second), but about the same as 7.0.  It's a bit slower to open an image into Photoshop once the button has been hit, though.
I haven't seen any difference in the control response - it was interactive with virtually instantaneous response before for me and 7.2 was the same.  An image quality issue, where the new Defringe feature doesn't quite work as well as its predecessor has caused me to drop back to version 7.0, though, and I do enjoy the faster opens.
I posted a set of instructions for benchmarking your performance at the following link, though there is nothing there about control responsiveness.  You may want to go through that process, and also measure your control responsiveness.  If you can show that your system opens up Camera Raw and does the actual conversions at the same speed as others' systems, yet has vastly slower control response, that could make your point that you have a specific problem.

  • Best in Camera Raw Image settings

Not that the camera model matters, but is there any unique in camera RAW image settings that will improve how the RAW file is interpreted by Aperture?
For example, I shoot with a Nikon D200. I can customize how the camera "Optimizes" the RAW image by adjusting:
    1. Image Sharpening
    2. Tone Compensation
    3. Color Mode
    4. Saturation
    5. Hue
Does Aperture recognize any of these adjustments or does it just look at the actual RAW data and compensate just for what it thinks the white balance should be?

You don't need to do anything "in camera." Most (if not all) of those settings are ignored by Aperture, because they don't really apply to the RAW files (they are processing settings, and RAW files are effectively "negatives.").
So color space, sharpening, saturation, etc... doesn't matter what they're set to.
Of course, color space affects how the images are named on camera... the Adobe RGB spec mandates an underscore as first character, e.g. MG1005.jpg versis IMG_1005.jpg.

  • Camera raw images change colour in adobe bridge

I have photoshop CS4 and import my camera raw images into Adobe Bridge.  When I view the thumbnails in bridge my raw images look vibrant and exactly like they appear on the camera but when I go to open them in camera raw edit they change colour and look washed out before I've made any changes.  Can anyone help me figure out how to correct this?

My camera is set to shoot sRGB JPGs and is set to all zeros for the brightness/contrast/saturation parameters.
What is your camera set to as far as these basic toning settings, as well as any automatic things like DLighting or highlight compression and perhaps any custom curves or whatever that is called for Nikons?
First paragraph - so is mine.
Second paragraph - all other settings are neutral/zeroed/turned off, as per my post to which you responded. That is, no additional tone curves - Active D-Lighting turned OFF (why anyone would let the camera decide what to do do with highlights and shadows is beyond my level of trust) , Jpg compression is Optimal (least possible) et cetera.
Think I now have an explanation for the different displays in ACR (and Bridge) that I have been experiencing. Took a new duplicate Jpg/Raw shot with the in-camera Picture Control set to Neutral. Now, when both the Jpg and .NEF Raw are viewed in ACR, with the ACR Camera profile set to Camera Neutral, they appear, ASAICT, identical. Saved Camera Neutral as the default ACR Camera profile. Now back in Bridge, the images also appear pretty much identical.
I think what was happening previously was that I had failed to save Camera Standard in ACR as the default Camera profile, and it was defaulting to Adobe Standard, and hence it was rendering Raw thumbnails for Bridge to that Camera profile - hence the difference in appearance between the Jpg and Raw in Bridge. Unless I have got it completely wrong,  I think my problem is now solved.

Cannot open camera RAW images from Sony DSC-RX100M3 camera.  Working on a Mac with Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw 6.7?

    Bruce,
When I made the transition to digital some 8 years ago, I had tremendous help from a number of well documented websites, among which:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com
I think a lot of stuff there to get you seriously going. Another one is:
    http://www.computer-darkroom.com
I sold all my film based stuff, except a Nikon F3 and a handful of lenses and a Paterson developing tank.
The Nikon suspiciously smells like foam mirror damping strips chemically decaying.
I sold my enlarger over the internet. The word "enlarger" caused me to be on SpamCops blacklist for a while.
I'm in this since the seventies, and I think you'll be as amazed as I was at the possibilities and control you have. And no more bags with $300 worth of film that's consumed in one shoot.
Jump in both feet! you won't be sorry. And these forums are the best help you can get.
    Good luck,
    Rob

  • Photoshop Elements Help | Processing camera raw image files

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/using/processing-camera-raw-image-files.html

    gegjr wrote:
When I selected "Save Image" there is an option to select the size of the JPEG preview. Is there anyway to extract the JPEG and does the JPEG contain the adjustments that were made to the Raw image?
The "Save image" command just saves (really converts) the original raw into another raw format : the DNG format created by Adobe to get a universal raw format instead of a specific raw format for each camera in the range of each camera manufacters... Using that feature is your choice.
And what you see in the bottom line : 8 bits or 16 bits has nothing to do with a preview, it is the choice of 'color depth' for the image the converters sends to the editor.
So, your choice is either :
    - to click 'Done' which saves the settings of your conversion (white balance, exposure, clarity...) to a very small 'sidecar' file of the xmp type
    - to 'Open' in the editor where you can work with all features of the editor (which include saving the output file in any format - jpeg - psd - tiff - png...

  • Can I create DNG files while at the same time keeping the original camera RAW images?

I wish to create DNG files for my existing Lightroom catalogue, but also wishe to retain the original camera RAW images. If this can be done can you please advise how I go about it as I seem only to be able to find an option for conversion to DNG only.
    Thanks

In the Conver-to-DNG dialog, you have the option to have the original Raw file deleted or not:
But, after the conversion, only the DNGs will show up in the catalog, not the original Raw images also.

    •  If using Mac OS X (10.7.4), do the following:
    (1) Mac OS X (10.7.4):  Restart Mac, download and install OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo).
    (2) install Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 4.06
    (3) If trouble continues, use your Mac's  > Software Update... menu command to see if newer updates are available.
    (4) If trouble continues after all Apple Updates are applied, contact your camera manufacturer for suggestions.
    •  If using Mavericks, restart Mac, download, and install the latest Digital Camera RAW Compatibility update.
Use your Mac's  > Software Update... menu command to ensure your Mac software is up to date.
If the trouble continues, contact your camera manufacturer.  They may have software for translating their RAW files.

If your camera is already supported by ACR, you don't really need the DNG converter. If you prefer to convert to DNGs or your camera is not supported, then you probably should download the latest version of the converter.
