Do you need internet to watch a rented movie from itunes?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.

when you rent a movie and downlaod it do you need internet to watch it

In the interest of full disclosure, I can tell you that I have gotten inconsistent results from this. There have definitely been times when I have a fully downloaded iTunes rental and have gotten a message saying an Internet connection is required for authentication when trying to view it offline. Last week, however, I did the same and had no problem watching one without Internet. Perhaps they changed the policy recently, or else there is a bug somewhere in the system.
Do note, however, that the following Apple support article states that an Internet connection is needed to authorize playback of movie rentals on the iPad:

Do I need Internet to watch a rented movie?

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.
For more information on movie rentals, you can visit:
iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.

  • Why do you need WiFi to watch a downloaded movie?

I bought a movie on my Ipod touch and watched half of it. Then when I went to finish it, It would not come on due to "no Wifi connection". Why do I need WiFi connection to watch a movie I just downloaded?

There's downloading and streaming. And often hard to tell the two apart.
Downloading means that the files are stored on your device, streaming means that you simply access them, but need to be on the net to do so. It sounds like you were streaming a movie, not downloading one.

No, you do not need Internet to watch it. when you rent it, it downloads the movie or show and then you have a limited amount of time to watch it and then after 48 hours of starting it, it will remove itself. You can watch it without internet once you have downloaded it.

  • Do you need internet to download a software update on itunes for ipod

okay i've got a new ipod and im downloading iOS 6 on laptop and i know you need internet at the start but im leaving to go somewhere soon and planning to take laptop with me and still continuing the update im just wondering
do you need internet through the whole process?

You need an internet connection until the actual update starts. First the computer downloads the update file and then it verifies the files by contacting Apple. Then the update starts and an internet connection is no longer required.
If you stop after downloading the update file, you will need an internet connection when you resume since iTunes has verify the file right before actually updating/restoring the iPod

I want to download movies on my laptop so that my child can watch on a car ride where we won't have wifi. Is this possible? Or must you have wifi to watch a rental movie?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
You will only need an Internet connection to download the movie, once it is downloaded you can watch it anywhere.

  • Do you need Internet acess to watch a music video bought from iTunes

I want to buy a MUSIC VIDEO off of iTunes but I don't want to wait for our Internet to load it each time I want to watch it so if I buy one I want to make sure I can watch it no matter where and when is that possible. I would buy it off my iPod touch and load it right off the Internet.

When you buy it, then it is stored on your computer.  You do not need internet to acces it at all.

  • HT1657 Do I need to be connected to the internet to watch a rented movie once it is downloaded?

If I rent a movie from iTunes and I download it to my phone. Do I need to be connected to the internet to watch the movie?

Some posts have suggested that you need to be online when starting to watch the film - so if you want to watch it somewhere where you won't have internet then you could watch a few seconds of the film when you do (you have 24 hours if you are in the US, 48 hours elsewhere, from when you start watching a rental until it expires)
