Do you need snow leopard installed to get lion?

Do I need to download Snow Leopard first to get Lion? if I download snow leopard will I need to save all of my data first?

A USB Flash Drive version of Lion is available that allows an erase and install of Lion on any Mac with just the prerequisite hardware:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465
So clone backup your data at least twice, and you will be set to do the installation.  Upgrade and install even with the Flash drive requires 10.6.6 or later.

  • Really need Snow Leopard on my new lion mac mini

Any chance of being to install Snow Leopard via bootcamp in Lion?
I can't use some programes anymore.

Depending on the model, you may or may not be able to install and run it on a second partition or external drive. If you're willing to pay for a copy of Mac OS X Server 10.6, you can run it in emulation through a product such as VirtualBox.
Boot Camp is for setting up Windows. The Disk Utility can create a partition for other purposes.

  • Format with snow leopard install disk gets stuck at apple logo

Hi, I have a MacBook pro 17" which I want to format but have no install disks however I gt the mac os x snow leopard 10.6.3 disk from pc world today. I have been trying to format with that disk but every time it gets stuck at the apple logo, my current version is 10.6.6. Any help would be great

Does your machine meet [Snow Leopard system requirements|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html]? What system was on it before, and why are you choosing to reinstall?
Does the disk you have obtained have a picture of a snow leopard on it, or is it gray? The latter will not work.
What model MBP? If it's very recent, the current retail SL disk may not work... only the disk that shipped with your machine will. Call Apple for replacements for a small fee.

  • Does the Apple Snow Leopard install USB work with any macbook air?

    Hi guys and girls,
Im changing the hard drive in my MBA 2008 A1237 from the 80GB HDD to the 64GB SSD. Ive seen a Snow Leopard install usb on ebay for £15 so ive brought it.... but I was wondering if it would actuly work with my particular Air?
As my perivouse exspriance tells me that some install DVDs are tied to cirent products such as my iMac install dvd wont work on my Macbook..
    Thanks

The OS X Lion Thumb Drive isn't being sold by Apple, so you need Snow Leopard. Buy Snow Leopard from Apple and use the USB SuperDrive to do it. Then, open Apple menu > Software Update and install the most recent version. If you don't want to spend more money, stay in Snow Leopard, but if you want Lion, call Apple to purchase Lion > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • HT2261 do i need to update snow leopard before updating to lion?

i was wondering if i need to update snow leopard first before updating to lion?

You need Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later in order to access the App Store where you purchase and download Lion. Snow Leopard is $29.00 at any Apple retailer or the Online Store.

  • Need Snow Leopard (in 2013), to then upgrade further. How to get it?

I have Leopard (10.5.8), from 2009. I need to upgrade to Snow Leopard in order to then upgrade to Lion, then Mountain Lion. How can I get / access / purchase / download / install Snow Leopard today, in 2013?
I live in Switzerland (nearly 3 hours away from the nearest Apple Store). I no longer have any guarantee or warranty so cannot get telephone advice without paying a lot. Looking forward to hear your suggestions!

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/

You'll need to purchase Snow Leopard (10.6) from the Apple Store before you can use the App Store application.

Cannot install snow leopard. Keep getting"os product manager domain error-100"

    Just to double check,
1: you are hold c or option/alt key booted from the 10.6 disk that came with your machine
2: you are in Disk Utility and you have selected the drive makers name and disk size on the left
3: you attempt to click Partition tab, click on the big box, select 1 partition, select option: GUID and format OS X exteneded Journaled and it reports "can't unmount disk"
4: you do have no other drives connected to the machine
If that's all true, then you need to quit Disk Utility and use Terminal and try to force unmount the disk
    http://macosx.com/forums/mac-os-x-system-mac-software/309784-official-mac-os-x-1 0-6-snow-leopard-thread-faq-33.html
Once the drive is unmounted, then hopefully you should be able to format it in Disk Utility

  • If you lost your install CD's for an iMac7,1. Can you use Snow Leopard to reboot/install?

If you lost your install CD's for an iMac7,1. Can you use Snow Leopard to reboot/install?

    Best answer; see AnaMusic above.
Will SL do? Yes, provided you use the SL retail disc. A grey disc from another Mac will not work.
    A few considerations -
Be warned that printer drivers, and scanner drivers in particular will almost certainly need updating for SL. That could be a problem if the printer or scanner is more than a couple of years old.
Many third party applications (and some Apple ones) may need updates for SL (Adobe particularly), so check with the vendors for compatability before you upgrade.
You'll need Rosetta to run PPC apps like Appleworks and many MS Office or Adobe versions. Ensure you select it from the 'optional installations' when installing SL.
Note also that any bundled applications that came with your Tiger original discs (iLife in particular) are not included on retail OS versions.

  • I have a macbook (2006) with 10.6 snow leopard installed. Can i get EA's origin and sims. It has a Intel Core 2 Duo

I have a Macbook 2006 with 10.6 snow leopard installed. I was wondering if i could get EA's origin download and sims 3 the game? The laptop has an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.

Unfortunately no, I have e exact same problem. Our ancient laptops are to the full extent of upgrading available for its time..., I'm trying to find an older version of origin to download to my Mac at the moment... Take my email if you want and if I come across anything ill send you the link. The only other thing I can think of is to upgrade the entire Mac software to the newest version but that includes wiping out the entire system and hard drive and locating the software disc to do that and I'm not even sure if it will process all of that information since apple conciders our laptops "vintage" there's no way to go back because they don't support the software for these older ones anymore.
    Sorry.

  • Bought you Mac Mini from Amazon? Did it come with Snow Leopard installed?

I want to buy a Mac Mini from Amazon simply because it's cheaper and there's no tax, the question is, does it come with Snow Leopard like the one from Apple does?
I am not being a cheap @ss here, i lost my job and trying to save every penny i can.
    Totals:
    Amazon: $577.95
    Apple w/student discount: $599.78
The 9.75% tax is killing us here in CA

Even if it does not come with Snow Leopard installed, or the upgrade drop in disk, you should still be able to get it for S&H from Apple thru the Up-to-Date program.
... If you’ve purchased a qualifying computer or Xserve on or after June 8, 2009 that does not include Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard for $9.95.*
This program ends December 26, 2009. Your completed order form must be postmarked or faxed within 90 days of the date of your purchase of a qualifying computer or Xserve (described in this offer) or by December 26, 2009, whichever is earlier.
Also, you may want to look into Apple's refurbished Mac minis. They are usually a Mac that was DOA when shipped to a customer new and has been repaired by Apple. They are technically brand new and carry the same warranty. Occasionally they have surprises, like upgraded RAM.
