Do you need the remote with the dock?

Hi,
i'm thinking of buying the Apple Dock, i don't want or need the apple remote, i'm just getting the dock to charge/dock and to TV, when the iPod is pluged in the dock, can i use the the buttons on the the iPod to control the functions like i normally would, or when i put it in the dock does that take over and need the remote? any help much appreciated.
- Mike

Jeff,
You are correct... I was over simplifying some what on the whole DPI vs pixels, etc. I still haven't decided whether I like the 480 x 480 MPEG4 or the 320 x 240 H.264.
My main point was that the signal is not digital comming out of the iPod, whether using the A/V cables directly or using through the dock. Secondly, that even though the standard definition TV at 480 lines, and using a 480 x 480 pixel video from the iPod, it is still not nearly as crisp on a large screen as on the iPod. The small screen just makes it look finer. Still, there should be no distortion, which would indicate a problem with teh A/V cable he was using.
As a side, I have my iPod connected to a HDTV. Whether I use 1080i or 720p, the TV must upscale the output from the iPod to fill the the remaining pixels on the TV screen, which ovwerall makes it look worse that on a standard definition TV... even then, there is no distrotion that Mike was having problems with.
..and yes, I am a proponent of using the S-Video cable versus composite A/V. As I said, S-Video should provide a better quality picture. However, my own personal experince is that it is only a marginally nocitable improvement, despite what all of the videophile techies procliam.

I've been trying to get a book sample and a dialogue box comes up saying: To receive book samples, you need a device with the latest versions of iOS and ibooks installed and Automatic Download enabled.  I have iBooks installed and automatic download enabled.  I don't know if it's talking about a new version of iOS on my iphone or my laptop. You people sure like to make things difficult.

    trevbeats,
I had the same problem. It turned out the issue for me was that I had Automatic downloads turned off on my devices!
see below how to turn it on.
Tap Settings > iTunes & App Stores on your device.
Tap Sign In if you're not already signed in to the iTunes Store.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Tap On/Off switch to enable or disable Automatic Downloads for each content type.

  • Mac Safari message: To view this content, you need the latest version of the Flash Player. Adobe TV

How do i get past this message?
To view this content, you need the latest version of the Flash Player. Adobe TV uses the Open Source Media Framework (OSMF) to deliver a superior video experience. Please upgrade your Flash Player to version 10.2 to benefit from this technology.
I am running Mac OS X 10.10.3 with the latest Safari version 8.0.5.
I have uninstalled and removed cache and reinstalled the Flash Player 17 many times, but still get this message when i try to view a video in Adobe TV.
I have version 17 of Flash player installed but the Adobe TV is asking me to upgrade to v10.2.

Try using a different browser and/or be sure to install and enable the Flash Player plugins for your browser.

  • Those who took a while to active then did activate, did you need the e-mail

Did you need the e-mail and have to click a link or something, or did your phone just start working? I am sitting on the computer waiting on an e-mail. Is this necessary, or will the phone just start working?
If you answer please be detailed....thanks!

The email I received was only to tell me that the activation (from T-Mobile) was in progress. They will send me another email in addition to an SMS to confirm when the process is complete.
Aside from all of that, I was able to synch my phone with all my contacts, music, etc., access my wifi, and try out the web and a few things. But I was not yet able to make/receive a call (or maybe I just didn't know what the heck I was doing).

  • "You need the Rosetta software to run -bash" ????

I've finally upgraded my old PB to the latest MBP. I have used the Terminal to run Ruby, RVM and Rails, etc.
I've used the Migration assistance when starting this new machine.
But Terminal kicks me out with this: "You need the Rosetta software to run -bash" I don't want to run Rosetta and I would think bash isn't PowerPC software.
I've googled this but don't see this mentioned anywhere. With Terminal out of commission, I'm unsure what file to open that will give me a clue as to my setup. thanx, sam

/bin/bash on a default MacBook Pro Mac OS X installation is:
    file /bin/bash
    /bin/bash: Mach-O fat file with 2 architectures
meaning it has both intel and PowerPC code.
So I would wonder if you are invoking /bin/bash, or if you have somehow pulled your PowerPC bash copy over during the migration of your stuff from your PowerBook.
My Mac OS X 10.6.6 /bin/bash chksum is
    cksum /bin/bash
    3855549735 1346544 /bin/bash
You might also want to check your Terminal preferences, as there are ways to override the default shell invocation that might have been migrated over from your PowerBook.
You might also look at what your default shell is set to (should be /bin/bash)
    dscl .
    cd Users
    read yourunix_namehere
    quit
    Or as one line
    dscl . -read $HOME shell

Do you need the SIM card when changing to another iphone

You posted in the iPod Shuffle forum; it might be best to post in the iPad forum, as I was a bit confused at first. Anyway,
It doesn't need a SIM to download apps if you have Wi-Fi. Can you describe this box a little more, or better yet, screenshot it?
    Taking a Screenshot:
Quickly press then release the home and power buttons at the same time.
Get the photo on your computer and upload it here.
If you don't want to do this, can you describe it a little more? When you say "black box," I'm guessing it's an outlined box that appears around any item that you tap on. Is this correct? If so, it sounds like VoiceOver was enabled. See:

No you don't need the cd. In fact the new iPods on sale don't even have it included nowadays.

You could try calling Apple and ask for Customer Relations.
    From Readers Digest-February, 2005
    How to Complain
You call customer service to complain about a product, and you hang up angrier than when you started. That’s customer rage, a feeling experienced by millions of people with a major complaint, says Scott Broetzmann, president an American firm that tells companies how to offer the best customer service. His secrets to getting good service:
    Have a goal
If you want your product repaired, say so. Want an apology? Speak up.
    Keep it short
Focus on one problem, and be succinct.
    Stick with it
You have to invest the time it takes. Don’t get what you want? Ask for a supervisor.
    Skip ultimatums
Don’t threaten not to do business with them again. Why should they help you if you won’t buy from them in the future?
    Plead your case
Many companies have information such as how much money you’ve spent with them and how often you complain. If you’re a good customer, they may be more willing to help.
    Be nice
You’re unlikely to get what you want if you’re rude.
    Good luck.

  • Do you need the original Twitter App to get Twitter notifications in your notifications center?

Just upgraded but I have not used the original twitter application in a while, I found a better one (Tweetlist). Do I need to have the original app on the phone in order to get the Twitter notifications in Notifications Center or will the notifications come through anyway as I have already integrated my account into the phone settings itself?

Yes, of course you need rights, for any content you wish to use - photos, artwork, music, text, everything - unless you created said content yourself. If you can't afford the rights to the photos you want to use, don't use them. Find photos, as Dave suggested, in the public domain or with a Creative Commons license that allows your use , or different photos with a lower licensing fee, or take your own photos. Note that if you take photos of people, you'll need model release forms from every person whose photo you wish to use.

  • LaCie d2 DVD +/- RW w/ lightscribe - do you need the Toast 6 Titanuim?

I need to purchase an external DVD burner and from what I've read, the LaCie dvd burner is a good one for the mac. I have two questions:
    1. Is this a good choice to burn iDVD movies or slideshows (made in iMovie or iPhoto than transfered to iDVD)?
    2. What does the Toast 6 Titanium software do? Is it necessary to burn iDVD' movies onto DVD's to play on TV's? It is sold with the LaCie burner in some packages so I wanted to check with some experienced iDVD users.
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • How do you get the dock to unhide? I've tried everything

My dock disappears everytime I go onto the internet but appears when I click off of of the webpage. I've been to my system preferences and everything says that hiding is off. Please help. I also can't see the bar at the top either.

If the browser is in full screen mode then exit by pressing esc.  The dock always hides with apps in full screen mode.

  • Apple 1 Year Warranty - Do you need the sales receipt?

    Hello,
If I am thinking of purchasing a 2nd hand ipod Touch but the seller has lost the sales receipt - does that mean I am not going to be covered by the Apple 1 year warranty on this product?

You should not need the receipt.
Input the serial number here -> https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
    to check the warranty date.
If it is not correct, the receipt will have to be faxed to Apple to update it to the correct date.
