No, you do not need Internet to watch it. when you rent it, it downloads the movie or show and then you have a limited amount of time to watch it and then after 48 hours of starting it, it will remove itself. You can watch it without internet once you have downloaded it.

  • Why do you need WiFi to watch a downloaded movie?

I bought a movie on my Ipod touch and watched half of it. Then when I went to finish it, It would not come on due to "no Wifi connection". Why do I need WiFi connection to watch a movie I just downloaded?

There's downloading and streaming. And often hard to tell the two apart.
Downloading means that the files are stored on your device, streaming means that you simply access them, but need to be on the net to do so. It sounds like you were streaming a movie, not downloading one.

No. Because you can also download rented films via a mac onto your ipod and you can still watch them.

As long as the film has been fully downloaded to the iPad's Videos app then you should be able to watch it whilst offline

  • HT1657 Do you need wifi to watch movies?

I want to rent a movie and watch it on a plane (no wifi) is this possible?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.

  • HT1390 How long can you keep a movie rental, once it's downloaded? Do u need wifi to watch it?

How long can you keep a movie rental, once it's downloaded? Do u need wifi to watch it?

As long as it's been fully downloaded then you shouldn't need to be online in order to watch it.
As to how long you have to watch it, from here :
You have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and 24 hours (in the US) or 48 hours (elsewhere) after you've started viewing to finish it. Once the rental period expires, the movie will disappear from your iTunes library.

  • I recently downloaded a tv show and my iPod said that i need wifi to watch it. How do i download a video from iTunes so I dont need wifi?

I recently downloaded a tv show from itunes and my ipd said that i need wifi to watch it. How do i download it so i can watch it with out wifi?

I think the issue may be that these TV shows are in HD. Would that keep them from playing?
Yes.  Sounds like you are trying to sync the HD version of the TV Episode.  You should try to download the Standard Definition copy instead and sync that to your device as HD content is not compatible with the Nano.  See here for more information:
iTunes: May be unable to transfer videos to iPhone, iPad, or iPod
To prevent HD versions from being downloaded in the future head to the iTunes Store, click the Purchased link, and then select TV Shows and remove the tick mark next to Download HD when available.  You should be able to download the SD version now from under this same page.

Do I need wifi to watch a rented movie

It depends. If your download the file onto your device, then no, you shouldn't need wifi. But if it's a streaming service, like I think netflix is, then you will need wifi.
I'd read the fine print and ask questions of your service provider and see what service you're using and how it works
