Do you recommend vxfs to run Oracle on Linux?

We are a fortune 500 company and we are implementing Linux for an archive system with a liklihood of implementing it in many other areas. We are considering running it on vxfs (Veritas File System). If we implement the vxfs/volume manager across the company, it will cost us a pretty penny. Appx $5,000 per box.
Why not just run on ext3? Could someone please give me some pros and cons and some recommendations?

As far as ergonomics are concerned, it's pretty subjective. It depends on the size of your hand and the position your prefer to hold the mouse in use.
For me, the Magic Mouse is not ergonomically weak at all. I find it very comfortable, just the right weight for pushing around a mouse mat, and the touch surface / buttons work very well.
Best thing to do is visit an Apple Store and try one out for as long as possible, and make up your own mind.
Almost 30% of Mac users in the MacWorld poll below use a Magic Mouse, so it's found a lot of users in a small amount of time.

Trouble Running Oracle on Linux --- newbie

I've installed Oracle on my linux system with a few errors at the end, which the installer assured me that those errors will not affect my installation (some sort of services errors).
So what do I do now?
I'm well versed with SQL and have been working with database systems for years... but getting oracle running has be a pain in my neck.
Here are a few issues... numbered for your reply convenience:
1)What file do you run to start the daemon? One would think that since this version is made to run on linux, the standard <name>d daemon naming would be expected (oracled, much like mysqld).. but I find nothing. I'm looked through the quick install and the install guides, and I must be missing something. They explain how to use everything to use oracle... but they don't say how to start the darn thing.
2)What is the ORACLE_HOME directory? The install would not allow me to run as root, so I had to run as one of the users. It then asked for an inventory directory which it said would house all my oracle products.. (/usr/local/oraInventory).. yet.. it tried to use /home/johnt/Oracle_Home1 for something.. I would assume oracle. Why would it try to install a product in my home directory rather than the inventory directory I just gave it??? What are these directories for? Your install language needs a little help. Is Oracle_Home1 supposed to be my first oracle product? Meaning if I purchase another then it will be install in Oracle_Home2? Not intuitive naming. Is this simply the single user's environment? Meaning that this is duplicated in every users directory? That would take up a hell of a lot of space.
3)Half of the programs I try to run say that ORACLE_HOME isn't found. Yet I have followed the install guides as to how to set the variable yet it still doesn't find it. I assumed that my Oracle_Home1 directory was the ORACLE_HOME directory... but since that didn't work, I tried setting it to the oraInventory directory (the one which the installation said the oracle products would be installed.. or housed.. which would make it a home, right?) and it still did not work. What am I doing wrong?

Recommended sound card for Oracle Redhat Linux 64 bit?

Dear Experts,
I'm trying to install the latest Oracle Redhat 5.
64 bit. On a certified Asus motherboard.
It will be a dual boot windows/Linux machine.
And I'm having an awful time with the sound card for my new server.
(It will be used for learning, at home. It's important to
have sound for some instructional videos that I will also watch.)
Other installs, sound has installed and worked fine.
I believe it's partially because the sound came directly off
the motherboard in those cases.
But with this new server, it came with a sound card, no onboard.
The sound card works with windows. But not with Linux.
I've been swapping three sound cards in and out, trying to get
one to work. Each has some partial success, but none meet all
of the requirements (below).
What is really frustrating is that I want the sound to go
to the green headphone jack on the front of the computer case.
To do this, there is a cable that connects the sound card, to
the front of the chassis.
The existing sound card that I have, has a connector for this.
It is an "HD audio", or an AC 97 connector. There two rows of
five pins, with one pin blocked up, so that the connector is
inserted in the correct manner. The cord is hard wired to the case.

You would figure that whether the connector existed or not would be a standard
feature that would be listed for sound cards. But it's rare to find it listed anywhere.
When I went to the computer store, I had to open all the boxes to see if it
was there or not!!!! Manufacturers, this is not that difficult!!
At this point, after a couple of days of struggle, I just want to buy a
simple sound card that works right out of the box.
Here are the requirements:
- gets instantly recognized by Linux (Oracle Redhat 5) 64 bit, and plays sound
with the standard Linux drivers. I believe I have all of the drivers installed,
because a few cards do play with them automatically. During installation, I
installed Every package available.
- no installation of special Linux drivers required.
- the other big requirment is that the card have output to an HD Audio,
or AC 97 connector, and will play music through the headphone jack.
(Believe it or not, I have one card that works fine out the back,
but won't work through the HD Audio. But it works fine in Windows)
- will also work with Windows 64 bit.
Does anyone have any good sound card recommendations that will meet all these requirements?

I have to admit that I'm not an expert for "sound" under Linux. I think you may find http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page interesting. It also shows which sound cards are compatible.
ALSA is pretty much standard under Linux and stands for Advanced Linux Sound Architecture. Together with pulse-audio it provides audio and MIDI functionality to the Linux operating system and is, by default, also included in RHEL and other descendants. You can install pulseaudio support using the EPEL repository following the instructions at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL

Run Oracle under Linux

I am a newbie on Linux environment, now I am using Redhat AS 2.1. I've just finished installed oracle 9i on my Linux and it went successfully.
The problem is, I can't find the Oracle menu on my Redhat GUI (as in Windows), so I need a guidance of how to access & run my oracle on my Linux.

The installation on Linux doesn't create icons on the GUI as in Windows environment.
You can run the tools and the sqlplus from a terminal.
The tools should be find in: /your oraclehome/bin
Use oemapp to load Enterprise Manager and other tools to create, modify users, instances, etc.

I have a VM that is running Oracle Enterprise Linux. I'd like to expand a mount but i'm not quite sure how. It's running the following version:

It's usually a good idea to test everything . The pvcreate command is not necessary. The following is a protocol of extending the LVM root volume of Oracle Linux 5.8 under VirtualBox. The same will also work for VMWare. The whole process took only a couple of minutes.

I'm new to Oracle, and have been assigned to "get familiar" with
it. The starting point is to download and install it.
We are at a crossroads in our decision process as to whether it
should run on an NT machine, or our RedHat 6 Linux machine. The
database it will be using will ultimately be quite large and
have many connections.
I have read about differences in threading models between Linux
and NT, as well as file size limitations on Linux.
Can someone point me to an unbiased list of limitations /
comparisons between these two platforms as far as a database
server is concerned? I'm not interested in a "My linux is
better than your NT" argument, I just need the facts.
Basically, "Which platform will net us better Oracle performance
and scalability"

Hi,
Oracle on LINUX is largly experimental, in my opinion. You did
not mention reliable and recoverable and robust (aka, working),
in your criteria ("performance and scalability"). If you are
experimenting, then use Oracle on LINUX. If your job depends on
Oracle working, then use NT (that's not my first choice, but NT
or LINUX were your two options).
The facts are simple to find. Search this message board for
LINUX issues. Then look at Oracle on NT support issues. Compare
the two and draw a conclusion.
Good luck, especially if you're starting with Oracle on LINUX.

Hi,
I have problem while upgrading SQL developer 4.0.0.12 to 4.0.0.13 on my windows 64 bit machine. 4.0.0.12 version is working good, where as 4.0.0.13 is showing below error while starting it.
I did try sqldveloper.exe and its not working, So I started running sqldeveloper.bat to get more information, also added AddJavaLibFile & SetMainClass to sqldevloper.conf but no luck. Could you please help in this regard.

You will continue to hear different opinions here, where thoughts range everywhere between "anti-virus software is the evil spawn of Satan" to "anyone not running anti-virus software is a fool."
Truth is, this is still a very personal decision on a Mac. Depending on circumstances, it is still very easily possible to stay safe without using anti-virus software, but circumstances and personal preferences vary widely. Besides which, anti-virus software cannot even remotely provide you a guarantee of protection!

Hello, I am interested in buying a new Macbook Pro but want to run the latest Adobe CS package. Which computer do you recommend for best speed and perfromance?

Depending on the software you'll use - I doubt you'll be an expert on After Effects and use Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver like a pro (you may be an exception) - I have a 13" Macbook Pro simply because the 15" lacks the portability of the smaller size - the Retina 15" is alot lighter and if you can afford it - go for it!
I bought the Macbook Pro and replaced the 4GB of RAM with 8GB of RAM and replaced the HDD with an m4 SSD from Crucial. The SSD really makes a difference in app start up speeds, loading times and bootup speeds. The RAM ensures apps operate smoothly and everything is snappy. Since getting an SSD, I would say the performance of Photoshop and Illustrator is vastly improved. I can have both open whilst surfing the web, checking my email and even using Dreamweaver every once in a while. Multitasking is great.
To conclude, depedning on your price range, buying a £999 Macbook Pro and swapping the HDD for an SSD and the 4GB of RAm to 8GB, will ensure better performance than both 15" Models. However, buying a 15" Model and maxing out the specs, would beat the performance of a maxed out 13".
I have a 13" and it runs faster than it was when I first purchased it last year. Photoshop opens in 2/3 seconds and performance is great.

P.S. If you have the money, get the 15" Retina. If not, max out the 13" if you still want portability. Otherwise, get the 15" and max that out if you feel performance is poor.
The reason I say Retina, is because the maxed ram and SSD is already installed and saves alot of hassle aswell as the slimmer design and lighter weight.
