Do You Think I Need A New Printer?

I've got an Epson Stylus 740 which dates back to oh, '98/99. All of a sudden, it won't print B+W even after cleaning the print head and replacing the cartridge. I also noticed I can't access any of the Print Utilities, likely because the included CD only supports the Classic environment and there's no on-line print drivers/software for OS X.
Am I missing something or should I replace this printer?

Whether or not to replace the good ol' Epson Stylus Color 740 is your call, but mine continues to work perfectly to this day, from OS 8.6 all the way to Leopard 10.5.8! (No, not all on the same Mac, but it is still the original printer!)
But I don't use Epson's driver. Instead I use the open-source Gutenprint driver:
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
(Click on Supported Printers to find ours)
which gives many more options.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iMac is only 9 months old, it probably comes with OS X Mountain Lion, and it includes AirPrint, so you do not need to purchase anything else apart from the printer (which is compatible with AirPrint).
Once you have purchased the printer, you need to follow the steps of the manufacturer. To add the printer to OS X, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670

    Hi Newbie111
I see that you are unable to scan with the Photosmart 1315.
    What driver are you using?
The driver listed in the url below is a basic print driver that will allow you to print only.

You can try using the apple drivers in the url below.

  • Can I Airprint to HP Deskjet 6800 if so how or do I need a new printer

Can I Airprint to HP Deskjet 6800? if so how?  or do I need a new printer?

It's not one of the printers that is listed on this page as being AirPrint enabled, and it doesn't look like HP's ePrint app supports it either. You could try a third-party printer app such as Print Central For iPad or Print n Share to see if they work with it.

  • I think I need a new Hard Drive

iMovie keeps crashing. Thus, I think I need a new hard drive for my 2001 dual 800 G4 (Quick Silver). Can someone please tell me the best place to buy a new hard drive, how to install it, and then how to transfer everything over to the new one and thus remove the old on.
Thanks so much to anyone that can be of assistance!
    Stuart

    Hi Stuart-
You can buy a good hard drive here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-IDE-ATA/
I would recommend the Seagate 120 gb hard drive. Your system is limited to up 128 gb, thus the recommendation.
You can follow the following guide to add your new hard drive:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/IDE/add2nddrive/
After you format the new drive, install your OS X Tiger on the new drive (I also recommend updating the OS X to 10.4.8)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
After you have finished installing the OS to the new hard drive, the OS should prompt you, asking if you would like to transfer files. Just follow the prompts, and you'll soon be done.
When the transfer is done, and you are satisfied that all is well, you may consider reformatting the old drive (losing all previous data) and using the newly formatted old drive for backup.

  • Can I update my OS if I have 10.4.11 (ibook G4 PPC). I need a new printer, but there aren't any that will work with my current OS

I have an iBook G4 PPC. I need a new printer, but my OS isn't supported by any...Can I update to a newer version?

Hello, there are printers available, especially ones that use Postscript, is it Laser or Inkjet you're looking for?
Highest you can go is 10.5.8
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
May be available from Apple again...
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4720126?tstart=0
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5
There are workarounds if the 867MHz CPU is the only hangup...

  • IPhone 4 cases:  How much protection do you think it needs?

Got my iPhone 4. Luckily, it works perfectly so far.
But I do think the phone looks much more fragile and breakable than my old 3G.
Now, I don't mind a thin, attractive case because I'm slightly clutzy and it's gonna drop out of my pocket a few times, this I know.
So I bought a case from a mall vendor that's no name but seems well made -- thin silicone that covers the back and the sides. $15. Do I need to do better?
My question(s) to everyone are... how thick and sturdy do you think we need to go to protect the iphone 4 from a drop? And what is the best case material for withstanding a fall? Is there something you've found that is not too bulky and industrial looking -- or does it need to be thick and padded to be truly protective?
And can I avoid spending $30 on a case (or that Apple bumper thing) and feel like my phone is protected?
I know nothing about this stuff so would love some opinions. Thanks!

  • I have an old MAC using OS 10.5 (does not have Intel processor). I need a new printer, but i cannot find one that will work with such an old operating system. Is there a new printer that will work with this old system?

I have an old IMAC using 10.5, and it cannot use any newer operating system. I need a new printer, but I cannot find one that is compatible with this old system.
Is there a new printer out there that will work with 10.5?

  • Printer won't print too- need a new printer head. i want to know if you have one in stock

Hi, my printer won't print and the error message states "bad printerhead".  My printer model is  HP officejet d 155xi.  I need to know  how much it costs or would it be cheaper to buy a new printer.  Still have four cartridges of ink.  Please advise.  Thanks.

    HI,
You can find the General prices for the printheads HERE, if you only have to replace one its ok, but keep in mind that the other printhead are likely to be just as old and might break down as wel.

  • My Lexmark X2670 printer doesn't work right since I reinstalled the Firefox 3,6 version. I keep getting the alignment page to print over and over. Is there a problem between the two? Do I need a new printer driver? What?Daisynew66

I had to change my hrowser to Firefox because Internet Explorer 9 doesn't work with my ancestry.com program. I can't uninstall Internet Explorer 9. I got Firefox 4 and it didn't work either. I started having problems with my printer working at all then. l was told to go to Firefox 3.x. I looked and there is no 3.x it is 3.5 or 3.6. I downloaded 3.6. Now I keep getting a alignment page and end up having to shut off my printer. I'm using way too much ink. I'm almost out with no hope of getting more ink until I get paid. I can't find anyplace that says to update a driver or that I need a plug-in or what might be I've done everything I know to do.wrong. It has new port cables. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Do I need to uninstall the printer and reinstall it again? daisy

I just figured out the print quality issue for my wife with her new iMac and new printer.
She replaced both at once and she couldn't understand why her Artisan 730 was lower quality then her Epson R280 when they had the same specs.
Turns out the newer printer had the option to connect via wifi which we used during setup.
The driver options are completely different depending on how you connect.
Once I connected via USB the correct options were available and the print quality was better.
Looking at the R2400 it dies not have wifi, but while researching the problem for my wife someone esle was having an issue updating to the latest printer driver.
If you go into the print utility from the Printer and Scanner system preference and under the general tab you should have driver 5.5.
One user had to delete the old printer driver before Software Update loaded the newer printer driver.

On my MacBook Pro (w Snow Leopard) I always had to reconnect my wifi at home when it woke up. I upgraded my router from an old Netgear to a newer N D-Link and stopped having to do that.
I would be surprised you would have that problem with an Airport Extreme, you might check to see if there is a firmware update for it.

  • Do I need a new printer?

I have a Deskjet 812C connected to my 24" iMac. When I try to print out a text document with Word or Appleworks, the font is wrong; it's elongated and gets cut off by the next line of text. If I print out a picture, I get a few pages of jibberish before I get one with the picture. Also, sometimes the page just stops printing in the middle. I've tried zapping the pram, rebuilding permissions, deleting and reinstalling the print driver - but to no avail.

It looks like the last time HP updated this driver for OSX was May of 2005. HP is real good at releasing a new dozen or so printers every other week, but not drivers for "older" printers.
According to this page at Apple there is an included driver for your printer included with OSX 10.4.
If you have installed the one from HP, I would delete the printer then set it up using the included driver on your system.
Other than that it may be time for a new printer.

  • Help! I need a new printer pronto.

My Epson printer just quit on me. I have an early am appointment tomorrow and after that will be shopping for a new printer. I'm looking at HP again since I had one that lasted for 6 years and still going. I only opted for the Epson because I wanted something better. Anyway, I'm looking for feedback for an all-in-one printer that will work well with the iMac G5. I need a printer to print photos, greeting cards, envelopes, copies without use of a computer. Can anyone give me some suggestions? Thanks one and all.

A second vote here for a Canon, Eugene.
I changed over from Epson to Canon a couple of years back and have been immensely impressed with the cheaper running costs and far less ink clog problems than I had with the Epsons that I had used beforehand. I have also had a recent HP 450 portable printer which was simply a nightmare.
    Cheers

  • Need A New Printer~Which Would Be Good For My Needs?

Just on Saturday I got my New iMac computer with of course OS X Mountain Lion to replace my old iMac that was still running on Tiger.  Now I need to upgrade and get new items, particularly a printer. My old printer is a HP All-In-One Photosmart and was the type to directly hook up via a USB port cable...NOT wireless.  There IS NO updated software to upgrade this printer, so that means I need to get a new printer.  I don't have wireless Wi-Fi but connect to the internet via Ethernet cable and notice most of the "newer"printers are all wireless..are they any printers that can have the versatility to connect via wireless but more important USB cable?  I need a printer that can print documents (from my computer), scan and print photos from my computer NOT a memory card as I do not have a digital camera...my photos are scans from a photo scanner to digitize.  I've been reading what Apple store has to offer as far as printers and frankly confused which would be the best printer to buy for my needs.
    Any suggestions??
PS NEED PRINTER THAT CAN HOOK UP VIA USB PORT NOT ETHERNET AS THAT IS ALREADY TAKEN BY MY HOOK UP VIA MY DSL ROUTER

Canon MG8220 has wireless, Ethernet and USB posts. Printer and scanner drivers are available via Apple Software Update.

  • Not computer knowledgeable...i have a 'brother' copy machine that used to work fine. now i can't get it to copy anything. Anyone know what the problem may be?  Maybe I just need a new printer?

    Can anyone HELP???

By "copy", do you mean inserting a document into the printer's feed (or on the scan bed) of the printer and having it then make a copy onto another sheet of paper? If so, then it's highly unlikely to be a Mac-related problem. You probably will need to take this up with Brother tech support.
    Regards.

  • Just upgraded mac book pro to lion also needed a new printer printer says in has AirPrint but does not support lion ?  I need the AirPrint because of my iPad  help please ?

Just upgraded my mac book pro to the lion operating system, the next day my printer broke.  Went to buy a new printer that supports AirPrint because I also have an iPad ( my old printer did NOT support AirPrint ). The printer I bought is an HP that said it supported AirPrint, when I installed the printer and try to run the installation software it said the printer did not support lion. Any answers or suggestions, I would LOVE to be able to finally print from my iPad.

Check with HP whether the printer and/or printer driver is compatible with Lion. Any hint as to what printer?
